1. What is Gimbal?

Gimbal is an indie top down 2D shooter for Windows with buildable aircraft and an hard sci-fi slant. In Gimbal you take to the skies in the upper atmosphere of planets and duke it out with other players in real time team based combat. Your aircraft are your weapons and you can customize every bit of them. Fit engines; weapons, armor, structures, etc. to build the ultimate killing machine. Anything is possible from stealty mine laying ships to super tanky gun boats to ultra fast guerrilla strike ships. As you play, you will increase your budget which will unlock you new hulls and equipment as well as increase the number of things you can pile onto your ships! The game physics simulate inertia and drag; requiring your ships to be aerodynamically stable. The game also features per pixel hit detection which means that you can shoot an enemy from behind to take out xer engines, leaving them to float helplessly away. If you're a fan of games like Starfarer then this game is for you! Honestly right now the biggest shortcoming of the game is it's lack of publicity, but the momentum is up. You can now regularly find folks to play with during the evenings and every Thursday there is a community play session which routinely has two teams full of human players.

A new (free) expansion is in the works and should be released soon which will add new equipment and features. If you've played Gimbal before, things, they are a changin'.

Memory: 1 GB RAM
Graphics: 256 MB, Shader model 2.0, NVidia GeForce 6600 or better
Hard Drive: 300 MB of free space
Input: Mouse and Keyboard required

5. Demo and Purchasing

Gimbal costs $14.99.
If you're not sure if Gimbal is for you, you're in luck. There is a free demo avaliable!
If you are already screaming:

You can purchase your very own copy of Gimbal here!
Additionally you can purchase Gimbal on Desura. The game is currently in Steam Greenlight and could use your help to get it released there as well!

6. Steam Greenlight

Gimbal is currently working towards a Steam release and needs your help! You can vote for it on Steam Greenlight here.

7. Community Play Sessions

The official standing play session for Gimbal is every Thursday at 9:00pm EST (2:00am GMT). Routinely enough players are online that two teams of all human players can match up. Colinshark, the developer, and most of the community figureheads are in attendance. It's a lot of fun and if you're having a hard time finding other players to blow up I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

8. Blueprints

In Gimbal, when you kill another player you steal their ship's blueprint allowing you to fly and edit it if you desire. Additionally colinshark has worked some .PNG magic and embedded all the ship data in .PNG images. Your hangar is literally just a library of pictures that you can share with people for use in the game. For this reason I can post some ships I have in my hangar and you can download them to your hangar folder for use in the game.

Gimbal Newz

1. Expansion: There are just a couple weeks of dev/testing left for the Gimbal Expansion (Beta) features. Some of you have been in on this, so you know what it is. You'll have to wait until the actual release for the complete feature listing, but there will be more parts and popular game modes such as Capture-the-Flag, to really flesh out the game. There is no charge for the expansion- It's just a very large release.

2. Cheap Gimbal: Gimbal is now part of the IndieGala Mass Effect Bundle for the next 11 days. It's Pay-What-You-Want, but you need to beat the price threshold to get Gimbal and Mass Effect 2, among others.

Damnit Steve, you know I'm a sucker for Back to the Future references.

It's been a while since I played this. I bought it when the game was first released, has there been any significant changes since then? I enjoyed the game a lot, but I could rarely actually connect to any games that were available then.

I have only been playing for about two months. In that time there have been a few patches, mostly for bugs. Currently some new equipment is in beta; including 4 new weapons. I think those are pretty much ready for release. From what I've gathered from talking to colinshark during the official play sessions is that the free expansion should be rolling out fairly soon. I know that a lot of connectivity problems have been resolved; then again I have a friend who can't connect to the master server from his university and I have to send him the IP addresses of the individual servers.

Has anyone been able to get the beta client with the new parts? I've heard you can get it by emailing the dev, but I can't seem to find anything on the official forums about it.

Please tell me there are people still playing this? Picked it up for myself and a friend the other night. Had glorious times building floating turret platforms. Now I'm into making 2000mph bomber/minelayer ships.

Been following this for a while. I think I'll purchase it when/if it gets green lit on steam. Not sure this game would be fun with out a decent players base to blow up.

Best way is to attend the official play sessions on Thursdays. The developer Colinshark is usually in attendance and he can hook you up with beta access.

How active is the development of this game? I bought it a couple days ago before reading the forum and even though it's amazingly fun most articles seem pretty dated.

Looking forward to the fight tonight though!

Seems I caught the tail end of the fighting here? I'm in as DarkDobe and Louis Wu (on my laptop).

I don't suppose Cave Johnson is a goon? He does appear to be a developer, at least - he spent a while flying around with a tiny fast little ship that had a Naval Series 100 mounted on a turret. Glorious.

The forum isn't super active; the beta section receives the most attention but you can't see it unless Colinshark grants you beta access. Which he probably will if you show up to the Thursday night play sessions frequently.

Anyone with beta access can use/mount the beta modules on their ships in public games. It's allowed but not encouraged as getting popped with naval guns all day and night by some beta dude isn't all that fun for the common folk.

Been playing some of this and it's been pretty fun so far. I don't know how I feel about the Ballistic CPU though. It seems everyone uses it.

It's fun making an armored barge that goes at 50mph but takes a couple hundred 120mm shots to kill.

I got this last night and had a pretty sweet time building the gunship of my dreams. Building was pretty intuitive once I looked over some of the stock designs.

I don't think I've played against real people yet. But starched the crap out of the AI. Definitely a Subspace/Continuum vibe.

One complaint I have is the AI pretty is dumb. I've seen the AI go in for a resupply run and smack right into obstacles. Not to mention is if you deck out the carrier with some heavy artillery, you're gonna get killed by the thing from time to time.

Do any of you have a favourite platform that you build silly poo poo on? I've definitely got one down that never seems to disappoint. It's a fully armored ship with enough room for 2 turret bases - and I've tried every manner of setup from dual heavy lasers, to 14x 50 mills (my favourite by far), to quad rails - always with flares and ballistics.

I really like platform 9, can't remember what it is called. It's the silvery-grey one you get at 2 stars. It's got a decent spread so you can do a diamond armor configuration which offers a good amount of protection for the cost.

so many cool stolen builds!

I decided to setup my server for a few and found that turning all the guns off on the carrier and toning their armor down to 50% made for a much more interesting game.

It is with great pleasure that I announce the release of Gimbal Expansion One! It has taken many months of Beta testing and development, but Expansion One is now here. Thank you, Beta Testers!

This is the largest release of Gimbal features since Gimbal's original launch in August 2012. Expansion One has new game modes, weapons, and features which work together to bring Gimbal in line with my original vision.

It's a free update to Gimbal, so all you have to do is launch Gimbal and let the automatic updater do its thing.

So far, the Expasion has been a boat load of fun. CTF is quite interesting. New tactics are popping up already. And Elimination DM is one of my favorites. It turns into a nice cat-and-mouse game, and the really beastly ships do well (not just small fast ships).

I have servers up for all the game modes now. I might need more server horsepower, but I'll see how they do for now.

See you in the servers!

I think the Impulse Thruster could do with a price reduction. I keep bumping into budget problems whenever I try to use it for close-combat ships that want to close the gap quickly, because those same ships need a lot of armor. Then again, I guess they're meant for lighter vessels...

Also, Salvo Module for engines!
