Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet is an original mecha anime being produced for the Spring 2013 season by Production I.G. and is Gen Urobuchi's third anime project where he's in charge of the screenplay.

Official Plot Summary
A boy who came from the heavens encounters a city of ships, Gargantia.

In the distant future a young boy, Ledo, is raised in space knowing nothing but war, until he comes to Earth, a planet whose surface is nearly covered in water, where he witness the sea for the first time. On the vast seas with an aquamarine glow, people form huge fleets and live a humble, but happy life. Ledo is the only foreigner in this world with foreign customs and language, but he’s not alone. What can he do to make a living here? How should he live for now? His days on this verdurous planet will make him face those questions.

Opinions On Things and Other Notes
Potentially Good Things
  • The world design is unique and looks gorgeous.
  • From the samples available, the soundtrack sounds really good (it's giving me Xenoblade vibes).
  • The mecha designs are great. Having mecha be used for something outside of military applications reminds me of some of the best parts of Xabungle or Patlabor. Hopefully we'll get to see them do things.
  • Despite his heavy reputation as only writing dark stories full of despair, Gen Urobuchi actually is capable of humor and light-hearted stories (the Black Lagoon novels in particular showcase this). I actually want this anime to not get that dark. From the roughly translated staff statements available, it seems like it'll remain light-hearted at least for a while and the comments seem a lot more legit than Urobuchi's twitter trolling during Madoka.
  • Tomokazu Sugita is voicing a giant robot.
  • Until otherwise proven, there are no high school uniforms in sight.
Potentially Bad Things
  • The character designer being mostly known for porn and emphasis on the female characters in the marketing despite having an even number of male and female characters at best means slight harem vibes and rare good discussion outside of ADTRW. At worst this means outright BUY OUR CHARACTER MERCHANDISE scenes (Bandai's on the production team what's the worst that could happen ) and never being able to get a good discussion going outside ADTRW ever without someone talking about how much they want to bone a 15 year old.
  • The potential for Urobuchi to pull three "poo poo gets dark" shows in a row (although Psycho-Pass was grim from the word "go"). I would still be satisfied with that, but I think I'd prefer to see chill Urobuchi again.

If there was a city that connected ships floating on the sea, what kind of life would people live there?
Ever since I was a kid I admired the world of oceans and ships. It's been more than a decade since I first began wanting to depict a tale of the people and their active lives in that world.
I started working on the concept for this all by myself, but thanks to Gen Urobuchi, Hanaharu Naruko, and all the other various staff listed below, I really feel like it's finally taking shape.
As director, my goal is to depict a world that makes people want to go there, want to live there, and to show the growth of Ledo a young foreigner who wanders into this world.
He's a child soldier who's only way of life has been fighting at the ends of the galaxy, but I wonder what choice he'll make when he meets people who can enjoy life away from land?
I hope to let everyone experience a world that makes them wish they could live together with these charming characters, and that's what I'm looking forward to most right now.

Gen Urobuchi posted:

From the moment this anime was in its planning stages, one of the themes I set for it was to incorporate a message for our young people in their late teens and early twenties—in other words, those are just about to enter society, or those who have just entered society and feel lost at sea. I made a point to keep this theme in mind as I composed the story, so it has a different flavor from the many other works I've created in the past. I hope that this work will act as encouragement for all of those who are being forced to struggle hard in the harsh climate of our frozen job market.

Honestly that's all I expect from this show, but I don't trust Urobutcher enough for it to happen. If it does though, it might be the first good robot show since like Star Driver. That being said even if it sucks I'll watch it cause sugitan is in it.

I am here for the ship-metropolis. Having Urobuchi on board is a plus I guess though not a huge fan, and I hope that it can scratch that down-to-earth heavy-as-gently caress real-robot itch that Patlabor has left.

Second-stage Midboss Syndrome

I'm cautiously optimistic about this show. It's got all the components for an interesting sci-fi anime, but the last time I said that about a Production IG show it didn't turn out so good...

Still, I'll definitely being giving this a shot.

It'll work out somehow.

My impression on that wing apparatus changed from "cool" to "that looks uncomfortable" within the span of that extended trailer. I hope those aren't meant for long distances they look really taxing on the arms.

But yeah, the music is cool, the city boats are cool, and the flooded civilizations are cool. Definitely gonna check this out.

Yeah, strapping houses onto a ship's girders sure as poo poo isn't going to help it stand up.

Still, if we can get an anime version of China Mieville's Scar, then I'm interested!

When I first heard about the setting of this, my first thought was the Thames from Xenogears, and that got me excited. The ship designs have not done much to change that, and I like seeing Urobuchi's name on the script. I have pretty high hopes for this, but most of all I'm hoping for Men. Of the Sea.

men's ass is a staple of the Metal Gear series

I really wish the dude's outfits were as good as the chick's outfits. The skimpy sort of neo-Polynesian look makes sense for a warm ocean planet. But all the dudes are in long pants, no patterns or bright colors, looks like it comes from a completely different culture. Plus itt would be harder for people to call sexism on the show if the dudes were shirtless and/or in sarongs.

Well, the main protagonist is a time traveller from the past, so at least for him it makes sense.

Yeah, the guys tend to look boring because half the reason for the cool clothing is to draw attention to skin.

The admiral has a cool short-sleeves + epaulet design, that I like.

Though my biggest problem is the MC's weird hoodie thing loving up his silhouette, and his constant grim frowny face. Lighten up dude! You might be stranded on what is probably the last remaining settlement of humans in the universe, but that doesn't mean you have to be a loving drag.

The design aesthetic gives me vibes of a cross between Xenogears and Chrono Cross.

Except for the main character. His clothing sticks out like a sore thumb. Maybe he'll get a new wardrobe after an episode or two?

This is something that bothers me with the character designs as well, but to be fair some of the men are actually wearing some pretty bright colors. Hopefully the show doesn't end up fanservicey, it's really my biggest fear.

Ultra lovely stream raws of the first two episodes are out.

EDIT: First episode looked nice! I really liked the character animation when Amy was running around the workshop, and later when the MC was running around the ship.

Watching the second episode now and oh my god this OP. Cheery music, people running around, looking swag, flying around while having the time of their lives, etc. Everything looks so bright and happy.

EDIT2: Episode 2 looked good too! Holy crap Chamber is strong .

EDIT3: Edited out links due to official streaming available and I'm pretty sure the links were dead anyway.

The design choices and the idea of a Polynesian hippie flotilla as allegory for not throwing yourself into Japan's choked corporate machine makes me think this is going to be more Shaitan Badi than MadoMagi before episode three.
