Golden Opportunity

A family member introduced me to rolling my own cigarettes and I really dig it. I don't like harshness and if there was something more healthy, compared to other brands/styles or whatever, I'd like to know.

This thread is not about quitting so please no "e-cigarettes, bro!" or "all tobacco is unhealthy" or "smoke weed everday."

The soft and brown tobacco has preservatives of some kind, and there are drier kinds out there. Popular ways to moisten dry tobacco include leaving it outside your window, or using fruit. You can cure in this manner. Cotton is an effective filter replacement, if that's your thing. Regarding anti-smoking, I think tobacco serves quite well for people trying to quit more manufactured cigarettes. The process of rolling becomes habitual, and might even serve as a deterrent to inhaling plant matter.

While rollies are far nicer (open a pig disgusting straight cigarette and compare the tobacco), the tar and nicotine content of the tobacco is probably going to be the only differentiating factor with regard to how bad it is for you.

Though using slimmer filters and unbleached papers may help.

Depends on where you live, actually. Europe has a huge variety in handrolling tobacco. In the USA and Canada, not so much.

Bali Shag is popular, and it feels really moist to the touch. It's pretty good.

I don't know about health. It's probably terrible. Not using a filter probably doesn't help either.

In the UK, literally everyone I've ever seen rolling up has used Golden Virginia.

Use pipe tobacco. Its nicer, and cheaper, if only thicker cut and "wetter." If you smoke really dry tobacco it'll be more of an irritant than slightly damper tobacco, or so I've been told as some sort of urban legend.

I used to smoke pipe tobacco from tins.

My friend rolls Bugler and Bugler only. He loves the stuff. I don't mind it. It makes for a mild smoke while still being semi rich.

Do you have a tobacconists in the area? Or a smoke/pipe shop (not a head shop)? I live in a small town, but our book store has a small (small) humidor and a few jars of good rolling and pipe tobacco. Open the jars and get a good smell. You always want semi moist tobacco, as dry stuff will tear your papers and give you a harsh smoke.

However, I would recommend against pipe tobacco. While it is usable, the cut and cure aren't ideal. Pipe tobaccos are usually cured more heavily and carry a stronger scent, and usually initiate a greater tar build up, as well as the thicker cut meaning it could be harder to draw. You want something that's been basically "shaved".

Your call on papers, but i prefer to roll tiny cigarillos out of tobacco leaf paper. You get to pretend you're Clint Eastwood in the Man with No Name trilogy.

e: Upon rethinking, Stalizard is right on the money. Drum was the stuff. Dunno why I thought it was bugler. Either way, I'd rather get some from a tobacco shop, rather than gas station rolling tobacco.

This is all really good information. I plan on getting zig zag filters with tubes and one of these http://zigzag.com/king-injector.html.

I do agree that actually making/rolling your own cigarettes would make me appreciate each smoke more and possibly maybe even deter me from smoking all the time.

I've heard/seen a lot about Bugler. After looking online, there are so many brands out there, so I'm just going to order what you guys suggest here.

Drum is fantastic, reasonably priced and reasonably available. Bali Shag is comparable, but I've never liked it as much. If you're feeling fancy, Peter Stokkebye makes a bunch of different blends. They're a few dollars more per pack than Drum, and I can never remember which one of the blends I like. Half the time I end up with something gold, which is terrible and doesn't taste like anything.

Proper pipe tobacco is best smoked out of a pipe. There is, however, a great deal of cigarette tobacco repackaged as "pipe tobacco" to avoid exorbitant taxes. The difference ought to be pretty obvious when you see it in person.

It's not any healthier than smoking ordinary cigarettes. It does not act as any kind of deterrent to smoking cigarettes. You'd be a fool to think otherwise.

Top and Bugler are poo poo. They taste like garbage, and they're cut too thick. Given the option, I always choose not to smoke rather than smoking this crap. The only reason to ever buy these is if you want to learn how to handroll on the cheap, after a pack or two you'll be rolling no problem.

I think filter tubes and stuffers are silly. Just roll one, with a little practice it only takes a few seconds. JOB papers come with Drum tobacco and are great - plenty thin, not too much glue. Top papers are cheap and work fine, by the time you can tell a difference you'll likely have your own paper preferences anyway.

It's pretty popular, though I smoke Drum myself. I find Golden Vag a bit tangy for my liking. Plus Drum has a little velcro fastener, so it stays sealed right until you've finished the pack as opposed to other makes where the sellotape loses its stick and the pouch doesn't close properly.

I know I've seen Drum in America, but it is rare that I've seen any rolling baccy there - normally only in smoking shops. Whenever I've been over there I've taken a supply with me.
