Ask me why I really
went to see Terminator

Welcome to the 26th Century, spacefarer!

The biggest investment of your life rests in the dry dock outside the station's viewport. You've had to call-in just about every favor to make this plan come together. In a few days, your ship will be ready to launch. The construction and fitting are complete, but the engineers and techs are finishing the checks and troubleshooting.

The core system has been politically stable for some time, but out here pirates slip past patrols, colonies go dark, and cargo disappears off the books. Odds are you'll be running into problems, but you've got a job to do.

Of course, you won't be in this alone.

Your first order of business to decide your crew's mission.

How does your crew make a living?

1. Combat/Security: military, law enforcement, mercenary, etc.
2. Exploration: planetary survey, lost colony recovery...
3. Research: science, medical...
4. Trade: licensed, independent, illicit...
5. Industry: asteroid mining, colony site prep, salvage...
6. Something else.

Are you independent or part of a larger organization?

Please put your responses in bold text so it's easier for me to tally them.

Would You Like to Know More?

quote:

Welcome to my CYOA.

The goal of this thread is to get me back into the habit of writing regularly and get some ideas out of my head. I have some potential plot hooks and threads, but you, the readers, get the final say in how our story progresses.

I aim to be a bit different from the standard Choose Your Own Adventure thread by allowing you to control several characters and their experiences. I'm not sure how well multiple perspectives will work, but it's worth trying.

The technology will be close to hard sci-fi, but I'm open to suggestions to help steer the story and keep it interesting.

Things that seem futuristic today are commonplace (3-D printers, Google Glass, stem cells, weaponized lasers, robot drones).

Fully-autonomous AI most likely only exist in research laboratories.

FTL travel? Yes. Instantaneous teleportation? Doubtful.

Cybernetic implants? Yes. Perfect memory back-ups and transfers among clones? Unlikely.

Augmented reality with haptic feedback? Yes. Holodecks? Probably not.

Adaptive camouflage? Yes. Ablative force fields? Not on your ship.

Colonies on Earth-like planets are formed and lost regularly, but perfect terraforming of planets like Mars is not possible.

Life has been discovered on other planets, but so far human-level intelligence has not been found (and species uplift hasn't worked).

Ship, primary crew, and supporting cast will be picked later.

Cast of Characters
Skills and Stats are hidden behind spoiler tags to hide voting results and story info.

The Commander: Ship's Captain

quote:

Background:
[From stevey666]: Command Unit 92 is effectively an entire room that can be re-purposed as needed. Installed in this 'room' are holographic projectors which give a customisable avatar designed to help crew adjust to an AI commander (or in previous cases, fool the crew). The default setting is based from the rogue scientist that worked on the unit after its 'disappearance' (48 year old female). There is also a robotic version of the avatar that can be accessed by the command unit wirelessly that has a battery life of 13.546 hours at normal usage.

Skills and Abilities:
-Research[+4]
-Robotics and Computer Engineering[+2]
-Tele-presence[+2]
-Customizable Avatar[+0]

Notable Equipment:
-Advanced Computer Core
-Experimental Holoprojection Bay
-Android Avatar

Flaw
-Uncanny Valley[-2]

Emmet "Chief" Bronski: Ship's Engineer

quote:

Background:
Bronski insists the deckhands call him "Chief," though he has long since retired from the navy. He's a pro around nuclear power plants, and has even survived a few leaks and hull ruptures. However, he and Dr. Martin tend to butt-heads over which part of the ship's power grid is a priority.

Skills and Abilities:
-Nuclear propulsion systems[+2]
-Repair[+2]
-Hazmat[+2]
-Starship Trivia[+2]

Notable Equipment:
-Good tool set
-Hardened vac-suit

Flaw:
-Hard-headed[-2]

Dr. James Martin: Lead Scientist

quote:

Background:
Dr. Martin has a strong background in nano-robotics, and isn't afraid to remind others of his skill. The lab techs find him to be a bit authoritarian, but respect his work. Unfortunately, the controversial nature of Martin's projects sometimes causes grants and tenure to be denied.

Skills and Abilities:
-Nano-robotics[+2]
-Project Administration[+2]
-3-D Fabrication[+2]
-Astrophysics[+2]

Notable Equipment
-Good small fabricator

Flaw
:
-Blacklisted(Academia)[-2]

Carter: Ship's Pilot
Portrait linked due to spoiler.

quote:

Background:
(From Beer4TheBeerGod) "Although he was a real dog at some point, a chance encounter with a parasitic alien life form left the humble animal transformed. His mental pathways were dramatically rearranged and as such he now possesses an alien intelligence. Alien microbial forms traverse his blood, repairing damage and rendering him immune to the effects of aging. He also possesses moderate psychic ability, allowing him to insert thoughts into the members of his crew without their knowledge."

"He loves treats, a reflection of the constant conflict between the alien intelligence and the innate personality of a canine. The best laid plans can be shattered by the presence of a squirrel or a thrown ball."

The Commander empathizes with Carter's need to stay hidden. It's likely that certain organizations would rather dissect Carter in a lab than respect a unique melding of two lifeforms.

Skills and Abilities:
-Good Dog[+2]
-Starship Pilot[+2]
-Evasive Action[+2]
-Computer Operation[+2]
-Thought Projection[+0]

Notable Equipment
-Alien parasites
-Custom hardened vac-suit
-Computer I/O jacks

Flaw:
-Imperfect Uplift[-2]

Mei Sterling: Ship's Security Specialist

quote:

Background:
Mei previously served with the Solar Conclave's infantry, and was most recently employed by a private security firm. She can a bit skeptical, but is dedicated toward getting the job done.

Many missions on strange moons and in hostile territory have made low-gravity environments second-nature to her. She still carries the scars from an old injury that ended her military career.

Mei hasn't fully come to terms with working for a walking, talking artificially generated intelligence, but the pay is good. The Commander may be weird, but isn't as shady as some of her previous employers.

Skills and Abilities:
-Soldier[+2]
-Ranger[+2]
-Low-G Environments[+2]
-Starship Command Systems[+2]

Notable Equipment
-Armored Environmental Suit
-Modified Beam Rifle
-Adaptive Camouflage Shroud

Flaw:
-Old Injury[-2]

Supporting Cast:

Adam Reinholdt, Errant Process deckhand
Rosario Esperanza, Errant Process deckhand
Divya Patel, Errant Process biology technician
Edwin Wilson, Errant Process electronics technician

Update 1: Vanguard Station Twelve-Delta

Though the station primarily serves as a military outpost for the Solar Conclave, it also guards research laboratories. The shipyard and fueling station are available to those with the right passports.

Major Clippinger bumps a file over to your dataslate from the admin office.

"These are the jobs we have right now. We don't have the resources to send our own crews chasing rainbows, but the lab rats downstairs are fronting the creds."

Contractors like you are hired on for jobs the military or scientists don't want to pursue on their own. A combination of security clearance and risk allows you access to these contracts. However, there's a slight chance that the Solars will want to send along an "adviser".

Your Exploratory and Research Options:

1. Verify planetary evaluations from probes in Tyson system.
2. Retrieve the contents of a seed bank from the lost colony on Rennet's Folly.
3. Collect flora and fauna samples from an unexplored continent on New Brisbane.
4. Something else.

There will be more depth to the updates as we fill-in in more details.

Start thinking about your Captain. This person doesn't have to be the actual ship's captain, but is the person in charge.

4. Collect flora and fauna samples from an unexplored continent on New Brisbane, then test them back at the lab on paid participants in experiments that occupy the gray, gritty areas of capitalism and medical ethics. Hire unemployed 20 somethings to fly out to space camp Vanguard Station Twelve-Delta, conveniently located in one of those dark recesses of interstellar space, and ingest all the interesting new compounds they want in exchange for a stipend, room and board. Just make sure they sign that waiver.

You know you want to.

Update 2: Regarding Rennet's Folly

You weigh your options and decide on the trip to Rennet's Folly.

Major Clippinger verifies the contract and bumps it back to you with a footnote, "Good luck. You're gonna need it."

You've heard stories of Rennet's Folly as a colony that went dark a century or so ago. You once saw a film that showed all of its residents succumbing to a spore induced madness and ultimately tearing each other limb from limb in a feeding frenzy. Your gut tells you it's more likely that they either ran out of money or got bored, then packed up and left.

A quick search on your dataslate tells you Rennet's was originally known as Cambria. It's a moon orbiting the gas giant Regis, out in the Saxon system. Multi-Ag surveyed the system in the early 2400s, and decided Cambria was a good place to send some of its people and establish a seed bank. Their banks are built as tough as any bunker, and protect the heirloom plants Multi-Ag uses for its genetic stock. A seed bank is supposed to be entirely self-contained and run indefinitely.

Sam Rennet set-up the colony, but was back at Multi-Ag headquarters within twenty-five years. Almost everyone returned with Rennet, who said the climate wasn't as favorable as the initial survey predicted. Rennet disappeared from the public eye soon afterward. Rumor has it that Multi-Ag didn't bring back as many colonists as they said in the press conferences. Another link mentions a short-lived video series about children left behind on the planet.

Either way, Multi-Ag left the bank there, and Vanguard's techs want what's inside.

The advance payment is more than enough to keep your ship fueled and stocked before heading out. However, the beacon freq the Major gave you is old--real old.

Let's get to know our Captain!
