I really like dumb forced analogies. Not even joking here, like it's a thing I do constantly just for fun. It forces people to rethink something in such a dumb broken way. It's a lot like...ah, gently caress.

My trick is to never hate anything. Like, as in not adhere to some sort of 'good/bad' scale and come up with rules for how things 'should work' or whatever. I like to try to understand everything along with why it was received the way it was, and so on. I find it rewarding and useful, although some folks are really afraid of 'thinking too much' about the things they watch. Like paralysed with fear at the idea of a film making them think about something it 'wasn't supposed to' make them think, or something. In a way though, if you successfully think of something the filmmaker themselves didn't even consider about their own film, you win.

I have beaten movies, folks. And you can too. Holy poo poo I should probably post my dumb essays on a blog somewhere

Dragging this from the other page because I have words on this.

I personally love it when something is poo poo, and not just in a 'it's easier to riff on something dumb/terrible' kinda way. I find bad stuff genuinely interesting and I think that stories that surround bad things can tell us a hell of a lot, sometimes more, about a culture that produced them.

Take the always-loved Final Fantasy 13. I find that game absolutely loving fascinating in it's ability to do just about everything wrong. A game with so much potential and such a clear intended message and figuing out why and how it went so wrong.

to wit: The game starts on an actual train to a death camp as the population of Coccoon are so taken by the propaganda of a literal non-existent enemy in Pulse, that they are allow entire villages to be rounded up and executed exiled to Pulse for the crime of simply standing within a 1/2 mile radius of a Pulse Fal-Ce - complete with stars on their lapels glowing robes to mark them out as a danger to society. And they happily go along with it - to the point that several people refuse to be rescued from their death sentence. The idea being that a group of rebellious kids, with their open minds and personal experience can open the world's eyes to a totalitarian leader who is actually bent on destroying the world - a symptom of his own insane desire for suicide. Such a simple, culturally relevant concept and the game simply cannot capitalise on it.) They actually use 'train to Auschwitz' imagery - and gently caress it up - that's the level of incompetence on display and it is wonderful to pick apart.

But beyond that there's the stories of what occurred behind the scenes to cripple it. One idea that the game was (supposedly) slashed so as not to show up the limitations of the Xbox 360. The fact that Fang is one of the (if not the) best written and most fascinating female characters in the game - because she was originally written as a dude. (The Black Knight protecting Vaniele to oppose Snow's White Knight rescuing Sarah) This stuff is fascinating.

This is also why I am so hyped for the next 10 years of DC films.

CelticPredator posted:

As someone who teeters on both sides simultaneously, I do see kind of where he's coming from. The idea that a piece of media I enjoy has bad politics and is 'bad' can be a little scary. Because you might have to actually engage in that idea, which can cause you to dislike said material. It's like cuddling up in your favorite blanket, only to be told it's dirty and needs to be thrown away. You don't believe it. You don't even want to look to see if it's true or not...because if you do..you might realize the truth.

And this is why I still watch Spoony's videos.

(BTW his inability to figure out the purpose of the glowy robes in FF13 still puts me in a frustrating rage - especially as I really do admire his ability to apply simple reasoning to games that my easily-led mind will happily gloss over due to years of passive belief-suspending-for-dumb-sci-fi-poo poo. For example: "Where did Snow get his coat?")

Like seriously I post that video which was really thought out and get a 9 point thesis on how its wrong and terrible and gently caress Anti-gamer gates pushing their political agenda in my hobby!!!

Though having the comment section on Chezapocalpyse only talk about the negatives of the movement (which make no mistake its all evil and negative) does open up the point that it kind of turns discussion into an echochamber.

I agree with that to an extant but when most dissenting opinions end up trying to fudge up the facts or state a blanket claim, it's kind of hard to have anything other than "I wanted to help industry even if it means working with these people", or somethig vague as "GG will do great things just you wait".

I've had Foldable Human as background noise for the last couple of days now. Really enjoying it.

Although his stance on superhero movies was a little :smithicide:

I hope he returns to this as Cap 2 pretty much addresses his concern and has Mr. Ideal America the Person actively fight against the overprotective survalance state (which is totes a total Nazi thing, guys.) Cap actually does articulate several concerns Dan O brings up.

Also Avengers 2 : Age of Angry Jarvis looks like it'll be in a similar vein - Iron Downy Jr makes a thing that'll be a good idea and help everyone and be super awesome and ohgod I forgot Azimov's laws we're all screwed now. Also a Hulkbuster.

He did make one video that made me cross though. The Narrative control one where he mutes half the videos sound. Seriously I understand the point - but did you have to do it for almost 5 mins? Seriously, there's making a point and then there's taking the piss.

Loved the Legend of Chun Li video though. That sort of stuff really ties into my rant up there about crappy things being really super - interesting if you take the time to poke at them a bit.

While you're probably right, his self-assessment was surprisingly accurate: his level of output given the Patron support has been "embarrassing" and the biggest ways he wastes time are social media and excessive editing.

On social media: "I'm pretty much done with Twitter. [...] Losing a lot of time there, gotta shut it down. [...] Besides, arguing with people on there isn't doing me any good."

On editing: he's finally going to hire an editor instead of doing it all himself.

Spoony has always struck me as delusional, not lazy. I hope he can stick to this, because it would probably be hugely beneficial. I know that I've benefited tremendously from scheduling out my time, at least.

He should probably talk to Brad about how to do this. Brad's always balancing several different projects at once and manages to get something out for each of them on a pretty consistent basis. Even if Spoony allocated twice the time for each project and was only half as fast, it would still be a huge improvement in terms of consistency and volume.

I get the feeling that Spoony is a bit of a control freak when it comes to editing. If you've ever listened to one of his commentaries you can tell he's incredibly picky about how certain scenes come together. Especially when splicing in game footage and live footage. I can see him wanting an editor, but also being anxious about it not coming out "right". (Of course, the real trick here is that you always notice the little flaws in your own work more than other peoples')

Yeah, I don't see Spoony hiring another editor. And if he does, I don't see it lasting for awhile. The dude has always been particularly critical in terms of his editing, and I don't see that changing any time soon. Moreover, I never saw Spoony as lazy (hell, he tried to make a gag of the fact that he bought a loving Amstrad CPC or ZX Spectrum plus peripherals for a lovely Big Trouble, Little China video game; but it does not change the fact that he actually went through the effort to hunt down all of that stuff just for a 30-second skit with his girlfriend).

With that said, the dude needs some better time management something fierce. And putting down the Twitter would be a good first step.

This is pretty great as it is, but yeah, it could be cut a bit shorter, maybe just by shortening the segments where you let the "content creators" talk. I also just want you to shorten those segments because listening to them talk for more than a few seconds is skin-peelingly horrifying.

Don't worry, though, they'll totally disprove the need for feminism by talking about the finest pair of legs while showing off their sick skulls, fedoras trilbies and vests. Brazen racism is also sure to really drive their point home. And all that for only $15,000 a month.
