I had caught up a bit a few weeks back. I had watched up through the Inspector Spacetime episode. I thought that episode was pretty good but it felt like the first two episodes of this season were a shallow immitation of themselves. How were episodes 404-406?

If you go in expecting something on the level of New Girl or The Mindy Project, you might end up enjoying them.

New Girl is a much better show than Community's third and fourth season, it's definitely funnier than most of the first season and certainly rivals the highs of the second season.

I'm sorry, but there's nothing funny about New Girl. Whatever fresh voice New Girl brought to the table last season was thrown out and now the show is just a half hour of adults yelling random things, making faces and acting like children. I understand why it appeals to people who yearn for that kind of arrested development, but I need more from my comedies. Jokes, for example.

I'd have to say that Community on average this year has come in third humor-wise behind New Girl and The Following. Note: I'm not even kidding.

Heck, it's not like I literally think that this is the worst opinion ever posted in the community threads, I used hyperbole (as the colbert showed) to drive my point that New Girl is a really funny show and that this was a cheap shot. I certainly didn't expect things to take an actual turn toward the venomous. That's why I suggested the edit so this thread didn't turn into another flamewar about chevy, since I feel guilty that I kickstarted the last one. Yeah this was definitely a highlight of that season for me (outside of the obvious CRT episode) Also am I the only one thinking that at this point, the Glee episode would have made the best series finale? Outside of Digital Estate Planning (definitely in my top 5 of Community) and Basic Lupine Urology, I can't even remember off-hand anyhing from the backk-end of Season 3, aside of the chang arc/dreamatorium episode. The Glee episode, on the other hand, was absolutely loving phenomenal.

The Glee episode was not much more than an incredibly lazy parody. Like, there's so much about Glee to make fun of, and that's the best they came up with?

precision posted:The Glee episode was not much more than an incredibly lazy parody. How was it a parody/mocking Glee? They just literally made a Glee episode within the community episode. If anything it's closer to Buffy's musical episode than anything else.

Twee as gently caress posted:How was it a parody/mocking Glee? How was it not? I'll admit I don't remember it very well, I just remember "what the gently caress is Regionals" was said a lot and the general tone was "haha isn't Glee stupid". Glee is (or was, I gave up on it) a show about unpopular people getting poo poo on. The cast of Glee were to the rest of the school as the show Community was to the rest of television. So from first conception it's kind of rear end-backwards. It came off as petty. And then add in that the overlap between what I would perceive as the core Community audience and the core Glee audience is really small - of course Community can make fun of Glee. Dan Harmon really wanted to make fun of any one specific show, and it was about as safe a target as he could have picked. Now, if there had been an explicit Big Bang Theory parody or something of that nature, that would at least have been kinda brave to do. Watching the Glee episode just made me think of a bunch of Community superfans chuckling smugly about how dumb a show they've never even watched is. Maybe I'm overthinking things!

| # ? Mar 21, 2013 21:59 |

precision posted:How was it not? Because the songs, choreography and the story were pretty tightly written and was in fact a much better Glee episode than Glee has been since the first 13 episodes. They weren't mocking the show as much as having fun with the musical format, the same way that the paintball episode was a love letter to action movies, a lot of which happen to be bad. And I still don't know what the gently caress regionals are so I'll admit I don't remember it very well, I just remember "what the gently caress is Regionals" was said a lot and the general tone was "haha isn't Glee stupid". Also, as far as I'm aware, the Glee and Community shows shared a couple of sets or lots and they were pretty friendly with each others. I think the only show that Harmon truly hated was BBT and just ignored it for the most part.

Glee episode rules. That prior 20 second gag was a better Glee parody (really how do you top wheelchair Pierce's jig), but the episode was your standard musical episode based on a premise about Glee-club mixed with a dash of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. To call it a failed parody sort of misses the goal. Aside from all the great songs, there were a bunch of jokes that really hit--the initial "cease and desist" madness, Jeff's Donald Sutherland impression, Britta's amazing tree dance. All this talk about final episode is nonsense though.
