The NFL is a cutthroat business, and you're only as good as you were yesterday and can be tomorrow. The NFL is a heartless place, with Belichickian front office personnel keeping a Logan's Run watch over their teams and heartlessly parting with long-term, marketable stars as soon as they become old, bad, or too expensive. We can understand why they needed to go and may even be delighted that their old, bloated-contract corpses are no longer uselessly gallivanting around the field fueled mainly by nostalgia, but this thread is to celebrate the players that have defined our teams that will be moving on this offseason to look really weird in another jersey.

Brian Urlacher, Chicago Bears

Drafted by the Bears in 2000, Defensive Rookie of the Year, 2005 Defensive Player of the Year, Eight-time Pro-Bowler, Five-time All Pro, Once Went to Superbowl With Rex Grossman As Quarterback

Brian Urlacher was made to hit football players. At New Mexico, he played a hybrid safety-linebacker "Lobo" position to take advantage of his rare blend of size and speed, ability to get to the quarterback, and instincts in coverage. Even his name is perfectly suited for football-- Urlacher seems like an acceptable thing to yell at someone as you collide with them at high velocity and I would be sort of disappointed if it turns out that Urlacher didn't grunt it out every time he made a tackle.

Urlacher fit with the Bears' tradition of defense, and he played on some of the Bearsiest teams to every Bears across that swampy morass called Soldier Field. The Bears' defense has traditionally needed to be exceptional in order to win because the organization has been just as committed to noodle-armed quarterbacks and allergic to modern NFL offenses. In 2001, the Bears Beared there way to the playoffs thanks to stellar play from Urlacher and mythical safety Mike Brown. He flourished as the consummate linebacker in Lovie Smith's Tampa 2 system. In 2005, he won Defensive Player of the Year as the Bears made the playoffs despite starting a hungover Kyle Orton. The Bears have been defined by their middle linebackers: Butkus, Singletary, and now Urlacher.

Throughout his career, Urlacher has also been criticized as overrated. He was surrounded by other great talent on the defense. For several years, he has been eclipsed by fellow linebacker Lance Briggs. The last several years of his career have been marred by injuries and the natural decline of an every-down defensive player in his 30s. Critics could also latch onto his numerous embarrassing actions in his private life or the fact that he modeled his outward appearance on an anthropomorphic thumb. But, ask anyone to name the defining Bears player of the new millennium and they...well if they're cool they'll say Rex Grossman, but they will probably say Urlacher.

e: For the sake of pedants, I know Urlacher wasn't cut and left as a free agent as did other guys I expect to crop up in here like Ed Reed, but this thread is more of a thread to celebrate guys who were the stars of their teams moving on including as free agents or through trades.

Im making this same thread when Janikowski gets cut

Why didn't you resign Nick Roach if you weren't gonna resign Urlacher?

The Philadelphia Eagles are merely a series of booms and busts; the long run trend of the franchise is positive.

But the long run is a misleading guide to professional football. In the long run we are all dead.

If the Eagles don't get a halfway-decent safety in the next couple of years, I wonder if Eagles fans will start talking about "The Curse of Brian Dawkins".

Ed Reed for my team. It will be strange to have him running around for another team, but I hope the Texans can be good enough on defense to help him pad his INT total some more. It will suck having to play against him.

I hated the Cowboys with seething rage back in the day but thanks to an "aw, shucks" QB and a little help from BBP I think they're pretty cool now. Hopefully the Steelers follow that pattern in the next few years.

On the owner side of things the Rooney's are way more likable than Jerry Jones, though that isn't really a hard thing to do.

Yea this. I'm totally cool with Houston grabbing him, they are a pretty likeable team and they saved my heart from having to deal with Reed wearing a Pats uniform. So happy he got a ring. I'm also really happy we got to see a Reed-ception in the Super Bowl.

Definitely from that game. That one was possibly his best game as a pro in that both picks he made were amazing. One of them was a really nice return for a touchdown and the second one he made from all the way across the field as the Dolphins were driving to try to score and make it a game. The second one was an unbelievable play.
