For those who don't know, My Anime List is a site where you can keep track of what you've been watching and how you rate it, and see other people's lists. It's a pretty good place to get an idea of what's worth watching, but if the discussion forums are anything to go by the median user is pretty dumb. Looking at ADTRW posters' lists might be more helpful than randomly selected users. If enough people post I might also try to scrape some stats.

Anyway, here's mine.

Yeah, I'd actually prefer it if they just used the translated titles. When I looked at my own list it took a wee while for me to remember what half the romanised titles actually referred to.

I was really confused for a minute when they changed "Legend of the Galactic Heroes" to "Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu" a few days ago.

Here you go. I've sort of codified my rating scheme:

1 - Shows that offend me deeply. Only one show on my list has this score right now and I only saw it as part of a group watch.
2 - Not used, because even the worst anime has to offer is better than this if it doesn't offend me deeply
3 - Awful
4 - Generically bad, nothing redeeming
5 - Bad but with one or two redeeming qualities/instances of goodness
6 - Either I liked it but thought it was bad, or didn't like it but thought it was good, quality-wise
7 - Standard for "good", not remarkable but overall fairly solid
8 - Very enjoyable or otherwise high-quality
9 - Fantastic
10 - Otherwise a 9 but had a significant effect on my perspective on what a show can be

There are a couple outliers that don't really play well with this system. For example I have every Kara no Kyoukai movie at 9 because I feel like you can't really take any movie individually since they're meant to create a cohesive whole; it would be like rating individual episodes of a show. Okay I gave up and rated each movie individually. Similarly Haruhi season 2 is a 3 because, despite the fact that I think it was hilarious, the content to time ratio was very, uh, poor.

I'll also throw in a link to MALgraph, which shows you a bunch of extra neat statistical information based on your list. It can determine your "favorite" studios and genres, give you recommendations, show how your ratings change based on year of production, etc. Mine is here.

Also made a Manga list with just a couple manga I remember reading. Looking at my numbers I give 9s away a lot but anything I mark as 10 I feel truly deserves it.

I thought the recommendation thread was only for requests. Besides, if it wasn't you couldn't post negative reviews anyway because it's supposed to contain recommendations.

I dont see why not, the Rec thread is dead anyway.

Last series I read was Sumire 16-sai, and its completly adorable. Its about a middle aged ventriloquist controlling a doll of a 16 year old high school girl. Its a gag manga at heart, but in serious scenes the old man sort of fades away and Sumire takes on a less doll like appearance as everyone comes to accept her as a part of their class. The final chapters really good too, and a perfect ending.

I finished watching My Little Monster because I'm paying for Crunchyroll and I don't want Space Brothers to be the only show I watch on it (I click on the seinen category and am confronted with this), so I'm trying to be a bit more tolerant and branch out. I thought the series was OK, not offensive, but not great either. High school nonsense with wacky side characters and a frosty protagonist. 6/10.

I never watched much to begin with, so my list is quite short. I own about 10 more series not listed, but if I ever get around to watching them, I'll add them in. And honestly, most of the stuff I really like is on my manga list. Anime is nice, but personally I just find manga to be more satisfying.

I recently watched Steins;Gate expecting it to be a mix of Primer and Inception due to it effectively being the highest rated anime of all time. It's not like those things though. It's pretty badly paced and as a science fiction story it's worse than Haruhi, since it's not as unique and doesn't seem to be as open to interpretation. However, the main character is amazing, and when it doesn't try to be serious it is one of the funniest series I've ever seen, so I give it a 7/10.

My list for reference.

So, I watched Madoka Magica. The show looks and sounds great. I can't say it excels in any other area though. The biggest problem is that I didn't find the characters neither very likable nor believable. The pacing suffers greatly because of this, since the many episodes that are spent solely on trying to develop the characters and their motivations are kind of wasted. Then there's the plot, which sounds like it was made specifically for me because it deals with nihilism and extreme cynicism. It even brings up scientific concepts I've wanted to see explored more in sci-fi (Entropy and the heat death of the universe). However, the resulting combination of these things was just too silly and when they were revealed I seriously had to stop watching because I was laughing too hard. I haven't laughed that hard at an anime since Detroit Metal City, and that ruined the tension for a while.

As for deeper meanings in the plot, I don't see any. I approve of the cynicism and the nihilism and the portrayal of the universe as a cold unforgiving place, but the show doesn't use those things to bring up any important philosophical questions like for example Life of Pie does.

I thought the ending was cool in many ways though. I gave the show a 6/10, and I'll probably watch the movies when they come out and maybe reassess the plot.

So looking at my list, while I give out 9s like hotcakes, it takes a special type of show/manga to get that 10th point. I've only given out five.
  • Case Closed/Detective Conan, the only weekly show/manga I make sure to read every week going on 4 years now (since I caught up)
  • Angel Beats, the first show I ever watched a raw of because I wanted to see what happens next
  • Bloody Monday, probably my favorite manga
  • Fullmetal Alchemist, the anime that got me back into the shows when I was a teen
  • Special Duty Combat Unit Shinesman, my favorite anime ever.

What do you guys think raises a 10 over a 9?

Yea, I was the same way. Out of everything I rated, I only coughed up a 10 for 20th Century Boys, One Piece and Jojos Part 2 and 4.

Which is odd looking back, because I think 20th Century Boys is probably the weakest out of all the Urasawa stuff Ive read (Monster and Pluto, havent dug into Billy Bat yet), but something about it really clicked with me. Maybe it was just the passage of time in the story.

Yeah, I mentioned in my first post here that for me, a 10 is a show that's otherwise a 9 but gave me some significant perspective shift. My 10s right now are:
  • Clannad ~After Story~ - For taking a harem and showing what happens afterward, especially with a protagonist who has actual flaws. It helps that I'm really susceptible to the cheap melodramatic emotional manipulation Key specializes in.
  • Eureka Seven - For being a mecha show that's surprisingly not so reliant on the mechas, and somehow pulling off a plot that's an allegory for an early major anthropology text. The romance was also well-characterized and meaningful.
  • Fate/Zero - For having a dark, depressing ending that somehow didn't really feel like one. Many characters were fulfilled in some way relevant to their character, despite failing their goals.
  • Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood - Pretty much the ideal shounen. It hits all the right notes in plot, characterization, fights, etc, and lasts exactly as long as it needs to. Every shounen should aspire to this.
  • Madoka Magica - For showing me that a happy ending can be pretty drat nuanced. The music and visuals are also a huge help to set the unsettling tone.
  • Summer Wars - For showing me that nuance isn't absolutely necessary. You can just dial up the fun content to 11 and get something fantastic.

All fiction uses cheap emotional manipulation. Great fiction uses this to send a message. After Story uses it right because it includes the most ordinary boring character, the most ordinary boring plot, and then takes those things away to show how important they are. It has a clear message about family and to a lesser extent ambition, and it makes the message stick through whatever means necessary.

Chas McGill

"Does a superman have super-hunger, Gerry? Super-loneliness?"

I agree with the idea of 10s requiring some kind of perspective shift. The two 10s that I have basically shifted the goalposts of what I consider to be good anime. I judge series against them, whether they're in the same genre or not.

Time of Eve - A lesson in heartfelt and economical anime storytelling. Six well-crafted 15m episodes with memorable characters, themes, and stories.
Legend of the Galactic Heroes - A true epic. Probably the only anime I'd bother describing as 'awesome'. It might be over 100 episodes long, but they flew by.

Funny to think that my two favourites are so disparate in length, scale, and presentation.

Gene Wolfe (author of The Book of the New Sun, my favourite books) said "My definition of good literature is that which can be read by an educated reader, and reread with increased pleasure". Change read to watched and I think that's a pretty good standard for a 10/10 TV show too.

So far I haven't watched that many shows but I've given a 10 to FLCL (which I indeed rewatched with increased pleasure) and Neon Genesis Evangelion (which I haven't rewatched yet, although I did also watch and really like Rebuild 1.0 and 2.0, which I suppose is close enough).

"9 but with an unusually strong personal impact" is also a fine standard for a 10 I think. What it definitely doesn't mean to me is "perfect" because I can point out plenty of flaws in the shows I've given a 10, but I still think they deserve it.

I tend to rate everything I even enjoyed a little too high at first and then adjust the score downwards after a while (i.e. when I get bored enough to poke at a silly list of animes/manga I've watched).

I think mostly the 10s are ones that I not only enjoyed immensely, but that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to someone else. It definitely helps if the show or comic still creeps into my thoughts months, or even years later.
