:black101:

What is this?: Chivalry: Medieval Warfare is a first/third person multiplayer PC game where you run around screaming and attacking other like minded individuals in a typical deathmatch setting. Originally a Half-Life 2 source mod Age of Chivalry, C:MW is a stand-alone game running on the Unreal engine. Think Counter-Strike but set in the medieval ages. Instead of guns and grenades, you can select from a wide variety (and still more being added) of weaponry including swords, maces, crossbows, spears, and many more. If you've played games like Mount and Blade or War of the Roses, the core concepts are similar but differently executed (more below). If running around screaming, hacking away at other people's limbs, chopping their heads off, and watching it roll down a hill interests you, then read on!

How does the combat work?: Each weapon has a horizontal slash that covers a wide area, a slower but powerful overhead chop, and a quick thrust attack. You can block with a shield or parry/deflect if you have a weapon and parry right before an attack. Players can feint/fake a swing to make their opponent block prematurely and can simply kick to push back an opponent or to break a turtling shield haver. There's a lot to do, and spamming the same attack will get you killed fast by someone who's half-decent.

Game modes: Chivalry features typical multiplayer game modes found in most FPS games and a few new ones.
  • Free for all: Kill anything that moves that isn't yourself until the time runs out.
  • Team Deathmatch: Agathians(Blue) vs. Mason Order(Red) in a team deathmatch setting, using a "supply" system (think Battlefield's ticket system) for a limited amount of respawns.
  • Last Team Standing: Team deathmatch, but once you die you have to wait it out until the end of the round when one team is eliminated. Stay Alive! (Think Counterstrike)
  • Team Objective: Depending on the map, you can slaughter filthy peasants, defend trebuchets, protect/kill the King(VIP), push a cart of dead bodies (TF2 payload maps), and even burn(inate) thatch roof cottages.
  • King of the Hill: Capture/Defend and hold a point on the map for points!
  • Duel: Are random pubbie assholes interrupting your honorable samurai duels? Duel fixes that by adding a structured one vs. one format with a pool of players on the server with no interruptions from other players during a duel.
  • Capture the Flag: Classic CTF mode with 2 flags and two teams. Defend your flag and go grab the other team's flag.
What are the classes?: Chivalry features four distinct classes with their own health, speed, weapons, and abilities.

    The Archer
  • The Archer is the ranged weapon specialist, he is best used in a support role and to deliver damage on his enemies from far to mid range. Vulnerable in Melee.
    Special Ability: Rogue
-With any weapon, the Archer can attack an opponent's backside and deal an extra 50% backstab damage.
Weapons to start with: Long Bow, Crossbow, Javelins, and Sling.
"Don't look at me like that, it's CREEPY!"

  • The Man-at-Arms
The Man-at-arms is the lightest melee class, he relies heavily on his evasion and speed abilities to land hits without taking any.
    Special Ability: Elusive
-Double tapping a movement key (or a bound dodge key), the MaA can dodge a few feet in either direction.
Weapons to start with: Mace, Broadsword, Hatchet, and Quarterstaff.
    "AAAAAAAARRRRRRGGGGHHHAHARRBBGLEARRBGLE!!"

  • The Vanguard
The Vanguards are an imposing aggressive force that form the frontline of an army. Their weapons have extremely long reach and deal incredible damage.
    Special Ability: Charge
-While running and focused on an enemy, the Vanguard can dash forward with a strong sprinting attack with a weapon (Try using fists!).
Weapons to start with: Spear, Greatsword, Bardiche, and Polehammer.
"Hoohoo, I do declare you're open to incontinence!"

  • The Knight
The most powerful, tank melee unit on the battlefield. His damage output and armour levels are offset by his lack of agility and generally slower weapons.
    Special Ability: Tank
-The Knight has the most armor and stamina than the other three classes, meaning they can take more hits and can fight longer before stamina runs out.
Weapons to start with: Warhammer, Long Sword, Double Axe, Light & Heavy Flail
"I tire of mead. I thirst... FOR BLOOD!":unsmigghh:

I'm a special snowflake, how can I stand out in the crowd of Internet knights?: As of the release of the customization patch, instead of just fancy veteran helmets, there's now a whole bunch of customization available! Time to represent ye olde Third Street Saints colors!

How do unlocks work?: Weapon unlocks are awarded by successful kills on the opposing team (team killing doesn't count!). For first tier weapons, it takes 25 kills for the first unlock and 75 kills for the last unlock of that weapon type. Also, if you unlock all primary weapons for a particular class, you can unlock the veteran helmet for the class.

Tips!:
  • Want to see how the game register your hits with your weapons? Turn on tracers! Go to the console (`) and enter "aoc_drawtracer 1". To remove it, simply type it again but with a 0 instead of 1.
  • Even if you're a cRPG veteran or a LARPing king, you're going to suck at this game at first. Expect to die be horribly mutilated a lot. Find a fellow goon in this thread or the Steam goon group and they'll tutor you on the game.
  • There is friendly fire in this game, so be careful where you swing that pretty big sword you have there! To compensate when there's other friendlies around, avoid using LMB/horizontal slash and go for more precise MWup thrusts or MWdown chops.
  • See a group of 2-3 team-mates ganging up on a lone enemy? IGNORE THEM. Adding you into the jumbled mess of meatbags is just going to get you or your team-mates hurt from friendly fire. Go do something else.
  • In the Stonehill Team Objective map (the one with the Agatha King), killing peasants grants you kills towards your unlockable weapons! Speaking of which...
  • When you unlock a new weapon, the third tier weapon is available to you after 75 more kills. You do not have to use the new weapon, as long as it's the same type. For instance, you get 25 kills with a spear on the Vanguard and unlock the Fork. You can achieve 75 kills with either the Spear or the Fork to obtain the 75 kills.
  • Press C repeatedly to win. Also try X-X-2 and X-X-3.

War of the Roses vs. Chivalry Medieval Warfare: Both games are similar, being medieval multiplayer games where you slash and chop your opponents into a bloody pulp, yet they differ in a few ways. Take a look at this video that compares the two games and you can decide which you play. Mount and Blade: Warband is also a great game very similar to C:MW and WotR, but in a different class of its own, including a singleplayer campaign, army/kingdom management, RPG elements, great modding abilities, and "meh" vanilla multiplayer (Give Napoleonic Wars and cRPG a try!)

Price: $25. This game has a tendency to go on sale on Steam once in awhile. I'll make note of it when it does.

Waiting for the votekick, I just about to simply leave the server, the guy replies "jk jk lol". The Chivalry community is making me bitter.

Thanks for posting the patch notes, Mega Comrade. I unfortunately was working when the whole patch process was happening that day.

They all seem like great fixes, especially to Citadel. I usually just leave the server if Citadel shows up.

Speaking of Citadel, the other day I was coaching a friend of mine on playing Chivalry, and of course that awful map came up on the server's rotation and we were both Agatha. I did my normal MaA song and dance while my buddy went Archer. Poor guy didn't get a single kill the whole time, except near the end. He managed to headshot the Mason king Ulfric for the killing blow to win the match. I'm kicking myself for not getting a screenshot. :(

Me and many others here will admit Chivalry is a far cry from any "serious" or "competitive" multiplayer. With a recent overhaul of the parry/block system, the really quick alt+chop swing, and the 8th Vanguard Helicopter Brigade making any melee into a meat grinder, the game is still fun overall. Being a new gaming "company" that Torn Banner is, they are doing a great thing by attempting to listen to the Chivalry community, but "squeaky wheel gets the oil" and all that with the vanguard players and of course they want to curtail towards the general playing public who seems to fawn over Vanguards (and Knights to an extent).

Call me optimistic, but probably in a year with a few patches, content updates, and just Torn Banner themselves growing and learning will make a more balanced game. The illusion of choice this game tends to have is pretty lovely at the moment. Pick this class and this weapon to win, while other combinations will have to work harder to get kills.

God drat I hope they fix Vanguards and do something with blocking/parrying soon. :ohdear:

I just picked this game up in the sale and while I do not regret it at all I do wonder why people are so intent on kicking people for doing team damage. Isn't that sort of the point? In a giant mash of dudes with swords someones gonna end up getting sliced by their brother or something. In the few games I played people were getting very bitchy about team damage but I thought it was hilarious any time one of my teammates sent me flying or chopped my head off.

The general pubbie community in Chivalry ranks up there in whining and raging about the stupidest things. Lots of helicopter Vanguards tend to be the bane of my existence, being a MaA usually I'm getting my head lopped off by a Vanguard whom I'm directly behind as their large arched LMB swing hits me somehow. It happens. Chivalry is a strange mix of hilarity and brutality that I can't really get mad at, because even if I'm just screwing around with the sling or punching people and dying a lot, Chivalry is still a blast to play. If you can play them right, pubbies blow a gasket when dying to good Archers.

Wow, do attackers always win, or is that just the server I was on? There was soooo much time to fufill objectives they were winning by attrition alone.

Depends on the team. It's like a lot of team multiplayer FPSs where matches are either one sided ("stacked" by higher ranked or just better players commonly) be it attacker or defenders, or in the rare (but favorable IMO) case it's a close and evenly matched game.

I can vouch for the fact team killing happens, a lot, but whatever... It happens. Heck, half of my deaths in most TO/TDM games are TKs. I played the other night, running around as a MaA with the norse sword, poking people over and over until I decided to LMB, nailing this tough guy knight who's been bitching the whole time about how awful we are, killing him. He was in the middle of the scoreboard so it's not like he was amazing. So this opened the flood gates. :allears:

This particular tough guy knight TKed me twice, he didn't say a thing. I TK him once and he flips and starts calling me typical racial/sexual trash talk stuff. So I follow him around, watch him get into fights while not helping him, once he finishes (usually he's bloody/hurt) I'd punch him to death while spamming the Respect voice command over and over. I did this about three times, and he blew a gasket. He called a votekick on me, got to only 30% people voting to kick me. I called a votekick, and he was kicked.

People get so angry at Internet knights.

I only tried duel mode once when it first came out and wrote it off because I love me some crazy battlefields with lots of screaming and chaos. I suggested duel mode to a friend because he kept raging how he was getting mobbed by everyone, so I took my own advice and gave it another go. I decided to duel using an archer with the trusty sling and short sword since I heard it just angers the hell out of pubbies.

Well, it apparently did. I won about a good 3/4 of my matches, and most of those wins resulted in them challenging me right after I won. I'm quite awful at ranged and would try to get a sling hit in before they got close, but I excelled at using the short sword. It was a bitch that I had to hit someone 5-6 times while everyone else only needed 1-2 hits to kill me, but it was a fun challenge. I loved running around spamming "HELP" and "KILL THE ARCHERS". After each fight I won, I'd spam "SORRY" and walk away (or jump out a window/into lava). People HATE feinting too, so that was a major source of rage for me. :allears:

I only fought against one other archer amongst a sea of vanguards and knights from dueling for about 2 hours and it was eerie since he used the same short sword and sling loadout. It was also the longest fight because it seemed we were very evenly matched. Best of all, he was the only opponent who joined me in my voice command shenanigans.

if two guys come at me in TO it's easier than fighting one thanks to the chance (likelihood) that they'll just chop each other's heads off in some sort of murder-suicide pact.

Since I've been dicking around as an archer lately, I've experienced this many times since people equate archers as easy kills. It's quite common to see 2-4 vanguards and knights swarm after me, and most of the time they end up killing at least one or two of themselves in the process. All I have to do is watch my footing and parry effectively and they thin themselves out. :downs:

As someone who mentioned about the fault of binding WASD/movement keys to C/YELLING was a bad idea for sneaking, I have a rebuttal. :downs:

When I flank as an Archer or Man-at-Arms, even when I'm trying to go unnoticed, I still spam voice commands. If I'm coming up on a camping nest of archers playing Meet the Sniper, I'll spam Z-4 (kill the archers!) repeatedly before, during, and after the archer massacre and no one has ever noticed. So keep screaming anyways!

I haven't played since yesterday, but I have to say I am having trouble incorporating feints into my game.

The reason for this is that it seems totally unnecessary to feint against 95% of the playerbase. For many of these players, feinting is actually a bad idea since they swing at you with wild abandon no matter what you do, and you'll get decked in the middle of the feint. Aggravating.

You're right, there's a lot of players out there who slash about with wild abandon. I find feints quite useful to break the repetitive Attack - Parry - Attack - Parry dance people get into. Just do a slight pause or a feint to break the rhythm. They'll usually block early or at the same time they have been.
