The Long, Dark Walk

It has been a long walk down. The slope is usually downhill, sometimes stairs are cut into the rock, but most of the journey is made through tunnels. By anyone’s best guess, it has been three days travel. A dozen wardens, a cleric, and an odd wizard guard roughly two-score convicts through the darkness to the mining colony. Each convict is individually bound and carries a portion of the group’s supplies on their backs. The march suddenly stops when the warden scouting ahead screams, “Goblins! Too man-” and is cut short.

All convicts begin with their hands bound(a simple rope tying them together), and do not possess their weapons. They are allowed their armor due to the danger of monsters in the tunnels and because it would slow them if they attempted to escape.

Maximillian

Your prep for the Imperial Heist had been thorough, so you recognize the seedy warden of the gagged prisoner as a member of the Imperial Left Hand, one of the Empress’ own assassins. As soon as the wardens begin shouting he and his prisoner disappear in a puff of smoke. This leaves you out of the line of sight of anyone but that odd, slow wizard.

Marisa

You are near the front of the group. You see the wardens looking to a Dwarven cleric for leadership, and hear a commotion behind you.

Jarl Ozruk

The Rations had been meager and to compare the drinks on hand to piss would be an insult to piss. Still, Jarl had gotten along well enough with some of the wardens. When the commotion started, one of them looked appraisingly in his direction.

Dr. Douglass Dangerous

Dehydration was beginning to become a concern when the march stopped. A cloud of smoke appeared around your position and you felt yourself being pulled away from the rest of the group.

Holvar Rockfist

Holvar drew the short length of rope, and was thus chosen to return to the surface to lead those whose tour had ended back, and then to bring the new convicts and wardens back down. Once the goblins appear, the wardens all look to you for orders.

Avon Morgan

As a volunteer Avon is considered a warden, though nobody seems keen to make conversation or even stay too close to the odd wizard. Avon trails slightly behind the rest of the group, and when the shout is heard he is the farthest from it.

I took some liberties setting this up for you all but everything from here is on you.

Seeing the trouble going on, Marisa tries to start a small fire to get her rope off. Unfortunately she puts a bit too much power into it and set her hands aflame!

Well the ropes are off.

Marisa has always tried to do good. To help those downtrodden and use her magics for the greater good. Unfortunately, the town guard in the town she was staying in was corrupt. They didn't like her messing around on their turf. When she got too close to finding out their deeds, they decided to cut her out of the picture. Faking the evidence to get her thrown into the underground wasn't hard at all. Soon enough she was sentenced to life in the World Below.

Arcane Learning
You are a font of esoteric knowledge. When you Spout Lore or Discern Realities about
something magical or otherwise arcane, on a 10+ the GM will also tell you a little-known
secret about the subject.

Black Magic (INT)
When you weave a spell to inflict pain, choose two tags and roll +INT. If
you do not pick any Range tags, the Range defaults to Hand. On a hit, deal
1d8 damage. On a 7-9,also choose 1:
• You draw unwanted attention or put someone in a spot.
• The GM removes a non-range tag of their choice, and you deal -1 damage.
• The casting saps your energy. You take -1 ongoing to INT until you have
a few minutes to clear your head.
Tags: Reach, Near, Debilitating (-1 damage), Elemental (choose 1), Forceful,
Piercing 1, Subtle, Two Targets (-1 damage)

Cast a Spell (INT)
When you weave a spell to help solve a problem, describe it and roll +INT. Spells cast this
way can never deal damage directly. On a 10+, the spell certainly helps, but choose one.
On a 7-9, the spell takes effect, but the choose two:
• Your spell won't last long - you'll need to hurry to take advantage of it.
• Your spell affects either much more or much less than you wanted it to.
• Your spell has unforeseen side effects, and might draw unwanted attention.
• The casting saps your energy. You take -1 ongoing to INT until you have a few minutes
to clear your head.
On a miss, something's gone horribly wrong. Your spell may well have worked, but you
will regret casting it.

Spell Focus
Your magical studies are centered on a particular kind of magic, an aspect of the metaphysical
world from which you take inspiration. When you first learn magic, select a Focus from the
list, and record it below. There is more information on Spell Foci on the attached page.
When you weave a spell that is Aligned to your Focus, your modifier to the roll can't be less
than +1. When you weave a spell that is neither Aligned nor Opposed to your Focus, take
-1 to the roll. You can never weave a spell if it is Opposed to your focus.

Focus: The Clock
Aligned: Adjust the Flow of Time, Stop Aging and Movement, Erode to Dust
Opposed: Manipulate Emotions, Moving Anything Around

EXCEED CHARGE

Dr. Dangerous

Dr. Dangerous decided quickly to play along with whomever staged this little escapade. After all, his situation literally could not get any worse. He could already feel the effects of dehydration, but his extensive knowledge told him that he'd be dead long before he had a chance to fully dehydrate. Unless he could find a way to bypass or undo the effects of the spell he would aspirate long before then. So, looking on the bright side whatever this was meant things were looking up.

The good doctor is gonna go with the flow on this one.

quote:

Dr. Douglas Dangerous

“Ah yes, why I’m down here, an interesting question. It all began when I was a young lad. Naturally, I was smarter than the other children, I preferred to tinker with the inner workings of our ovens than to playing childish peasant games like dirt-stick or the like. Anyhow, my peasant parents couldn’t afford to send me to the prestigious schools, luckily for by myself and them it turned out formal schooling was unnecessary, which they noticed after I spent a summer independently rediscovering the entire body of known geometry, basic physics soon followed.”

“There is one thing to say for an isolated upbringing, it leaves lots of time for experiments. By the time I had reached adulthood I had already begun to push far past the bounds of traditional science. My devices earned me some fame in the various royal courts and substantial funding from certain discriminating clients.”

“However, those halcyon days came to an end when I announced my greatest discovery, etheric manipulation. It would have revolutionized everything. Imagine it, being able to draw power not from such pathetic sources as water or wind or slave-labor, but from the invisible lay-lines and elemental fields that crisscrossed the world. Unfortunately my idea was far too revolutionary for the tastes of a certain empress. I was told it would be too ‘disruptive’ to the established order, and any further research into the subject was banned. When I questioned the wisdom of this decision I was banished to a weather station in the back end of nowhere.”

“I burned with the humiliation, and swore revenge. It was clear to me know that the empire was doomed to stagnation as persons of lesser intellect protected their own positions at the cost of progress. What the empire really needed was new leadership, a superior intellect to match its superior resources. I still had a substantial amount of funds stashed away, and most importantly I had my genius. By sending me away the empire had sealed their own doom, since isolation also allowed me to work in secret. I began to work on an army the likes of which the world had never seen. An army of mechanical men, all powered by my genius etheric broadcast system. I spared no expense or effort in their creation, they had it all: anberic emitters, reinforced chassis, dedicated repair units. Truly they were an unbeatable army. The name of Dr. Dangerous would forever stike fear into the hearts of my enemies.”

“Once completed, I marched my army towards the capital, none of the kingdom’s forces could stop me. When I invaded the outlying towns as a liberator, the response was tepid. Certainly there were a few who were eager to join my ranks. Some no doubt because of a genuine desire to see progress, others for dislike of the empire, some because they were greedy for power and hoped to throw in with the winning side. Most of the people were tepid at best. Their mood would have no doubt improved with time once they were educated in all the gifts my genius would bring them.”

“However, my genius plan contained a fatal flaw! It turned out the empress may be an foolish luddite, but she possesses a sort of animal cleverness. My army of Etheric Automatons would crush her troops, but I didn’t not adequately account for treachery. She had planted among the hangers-on who had flocked to me a traitor. I was taken completely unaware when the fiend drugged me and stole the Etheric Controller. My own army was turned against me, fallen into the hands of the empress I despised.”

“I was quickly found guilty of high-treason and sentenced to exile into the World Below. However, this was a fatal mistake on her part. Let her have the surface for now, safe with my Etheric Automatons to back her rule. Legends tell of stocks of ancient and wondrous technology and strange phenomenon beyond belief, not to mention the horrible creatures. I will discover and tame this savage underground with the power of my supreme intellect. Then when I have built a world of technological wonders that make the my Automatons look like children’s toys I shall deign to rise to the surface and show the foolish empire the mistake they made when the scorned my genius! Muahahahahahaha!"

Avon unsheathes his dagger with his left hand and begins to weave magical sharpness into it's blade. The tunnel is too tight to be able to rely on staying at range so he decides that preparing for the imminent close combat is prudent.

Casting Magic Weapon: 2d6+2 10

After enchanting his weapon, Avon moves towards the front of the formation with a crouched jog that somewhat resembles a spider walking on two feet. He stops a little before reaching the vanguard and hangs back to act as a reserve or provide magic support as needed.

While her hands will have some blisters from the heat of the burning rope the magical fire itself does not appear to burn flesh directly. The brightness of it distracts and ruins everyone’s eye adjustments to the dark. You hear echoing laughter in the distance. A few cries of witchcraft come from around you.

A bad thing happens.

Dr. Dangerous

You are led to a small alcove. A flash of light from back in the tunnel gives enough light to show that your personal seedy-looking warden is your captor. He talks in a whisper. “Thanks for coming along with me there. Very cooperative. I’ll give you the choice, then: Am I going to cut your throat or just pinch your nose? Either way the Empress sends her regards.” He wiggles a dagger in one hand and repeats a pinching motion with his thumb and forefinger with the other.

Avon Morgan

Most of the Wardens up front are still rubbing their eyes. The Cleric Holvar seems unaffected, but the Wardens seem ready to cut down the Mage who just burned off her bindings as well as the rambling, murderhappy Dwarf.

Holvar Rockfist

Goblins, generally poorly armed, scavenged or crudely made weapons. They are a nuisance but their hit-and-run raids are not a threat within the mining colony’s borders though they seem to occupy other parts of the mining tunnels. They should be charging into sight any second now.

Roughly a dozen of the little bastards block your way, their little eyes shining greedily.

Jarl Ozruk

The Warden mutters to the other one. “He actually WANTS to face a bunch of goblins? Has to be a madman, or berzerker.”

The other prisoners shrink back from the bloodthirsty dwarf.

Maximilian

The ropes come undone easily, Maximilian could have spent the next hour going into detail about how easy it was, if he had anyoneto carouse with down here. The only loose weapons around seem to be stones that litter the ground.

Now the device he had constructed one afternoon on a whim had become the key to his survival. Acting quickly, he lurches forward, while at the same time jumping in order to allow him to bring his hands to the front. The cohesion of the wardens seems to be disintegrating rapidly. Avon doesn't think anyone is going to listen to him, but he still tries to salvage the situation. "Shouldn't we ... be killing ... goblins ... right now? You can ... worry about ... possible escapees ... later!" His voice is loud and clear, though monotone and carrying a strange cadence.

To try to accentuate his point Avon points at the nearest goblin with his right hand and then swings his fingers towards the right. Unfortunately, instead of summoning an invisible force to crush the goblin against the right hand wall of the tunnel, his magic fizzles.

Casting Magic Missile: 2d6+1 6

Also my magic missile is kind of a weaker version of the magic used in the Saruman vs. Gandalf fight in the LotR movies. Basically I just hammer enemies with blows of invisible force.

Dr. Dangerous

The would-be assassin’s eyes glaze over and his body, while not falling over, becomes passively limp. There is an uncertain amount of time for Dr. Dangerous to do whatever he intends to do.

Avon Morgan

The greenish-brown goblin points at you as it rushes forward against the magical...breeze. It plants its spear in the ground and vaults over a warden distracted by Jarl’s attempts to...tighten the ropes around his wrists, apparently. The goblin chitters what is presumably a threat in its foul tongue.

Jarl Ozruk

The ropes tighten around your wrists considerably while extending the length of the rope between your hands a little.. You feel them begin to go numb as you see a goblin land next to the odd Wizard.

I suppose -1 to anything involving your hands until you get that rope cut.

Holvar Rockfist

A few of the goblins show an interest in your glowing weapon and brandish their spears at you, looking for an opening to stick you with them.

Dr. Dangerous

Dr. Dangerous first, uses the dagger the assassin dropped to the ground to cut his bindings. Then, his hands now free, he quickly searched the assassin and much to his surprise found several more of his devices as well as some other things he had been carrying before hand. Now satisfied that he's taken all there is to take, the doctor gets right down to work. He needs to solve the problem of his mouth having been sealed shut by magic. The flesh had been essentially fused, behind the wall of skin the rest of his jaw and its muscles were unaffected.

He could go through with merely cutting himself a new mouth, but that lacked the elegance a genius mind like his own could provide. Rather, it would be better to quickly construct a directed arcane matrix disrupter. The anti-magic devices had been a useful weapon for his automatons against imperial war wizards and he should be able to reverse the effects of the spell. Rummaging through the person of the unresisting assassin, Dr. Dangerous quickly had the device constructed. It was still rather crude, and would only work once before the jury-rigged bypass blew the ether coils. However passing the machine might be, it would serve his purpose, after all he didn't have two mouths in need of de-fleshing. So, ready at last, he throws the switch.

Dr. Dangerous

The assassin’s eyes begin to refocus and he shakes his head as the device goes off. His skin begins to take on a pale leathery hue as he runs off into the darkness, footsteps echoing softly as his skin changes hue in the shadows. The sounds of battle echo nearby.

You have regained everything you had on your sheet plus a dagger and a rapier. Could you put a general description of each gadgets function in your first post as well?

Holvar Rockfist

The Wardens to either side of you parry spear-thrusts and cut down a goblin each themselves. The rest of the goblins seem to be deciding whether to charge or run off, their chittering echoing off the tunnel walls.

Jarl Ozruk

Crack! Crunch! The Goblin is thoroughly tenderized. You see a familiar gleam in the distance, the axe known to you as Torment. The goblin holding it is trying to urge its kin to attack the front line again.

Marisa

The Wardens grow even more agitated at your “witchcraft” They point their weapons at you.

Avon Morgan

“And this one’s a Warlock!”

“Might be a Necromancer, they’re pale too right?”

The Wardens are obviously taken by the anti-magic Imperial propaganda. “Anyway I knew there was something off about you!”

Avon is thoroughly surprised by the ignorance and uselessness of the wardens. "Are ... you seriously telling ... me ... that you've never ... seen ... the uniform ... of a graduate of ... THE IMPERIAL COLLEGE OF WIZARDRY! ... And shouldn't ... you be helping with ... these ... goblins, the prisoners ... have done ... more to fight ... them off than ... you!" Exasperation shows clearly through even the odd cadence of his monotone voice.

Seeing the thief get winged by an arrow, Avon decides that the wardens are clearly going to get themselves killed by arrows while standing around being useless if he doesn't do something about the remaining archers. A shooting match without cover is going be hazardous and take too long and the goblins are already preparing for a second volley, so Avon figures that the most expedient way to stop the archers is to close the distance by charging low to the ground and diving below any arrows they manage to get off.

Having made his decision, Avon breaks into an extremely low, nigh horizontal sprint straight towards the goblin archers, with only his forward momentum keeping him from falling.

Once he reaches the archers, he plans to seize the foremost archer by the throat, bear it down with his momentum and stab it in the eye.
