Edutainment is entertainment that is trying to be both educational and entertaining. Edutainment can take the form of a video game, a movie documentary, a tv show, music, a children's cartoon, basically anything that's trying to educate and entertain the viewer at the same time. When sharing please try to explain why you feel it's good or bad and provide a link if possible. BEST: TV: Recess Episode: The Economics of Recess Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFZZxOHHZlo Honestly, I never thought "Regulations are beneficial to an economy and society" would make a fitting moral for a kid's show but Recess managed to pull it off and managed to pull it off well. WORST: TV: Penn and Teller's Bull-poo poo. Episode: Taxes Link: Summary: Basically a very biased and completely unfair explanation of why progressive taxation is "Bullshit" from the point of view of two Libertarians. The main problem I have with the episode is that it never really tries to explain anything about progressive taxation beyond "People that work harder have to pay more than lazy people, that's bullshit" and they don't provide any experts to defend it. They even show a clip where one woman says "I'm against the flat tax because it puts a greater strain on the poor..." and before she can continue Penn just yells, "Oh shut up!" and moves on to comparing Ron Paul to Gandalf the Grey. Even though progressive taxation is a complicated subject and was never meant to be fully explained in a 40 minute network TV show I really don't see what's so hard about explaining how 10% of one person's income may be equivalent in value to 15-25% of another person's income and how the economy would probably collapse if we didn't move that money around. BEST: Educational Film: Around the Corner Link:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K4JhruinbWc When it comes to common mechanical linkages, the differential in a car's axle is really difficult to wrap your mind around. It's the gearing that allows one wheel on one side of your car to spin faster than the wheel on the other side when you make a turn. Although that sounds simple enough, it is something that took vehicle makers decades to work out, because the linkage is not at all intuitive, even for mechanical engineers. This video, made by GM in the 1930's(!) is the best non-technical explanation I've ever seen, and remains visually interesting to watch during the entire film.

BEST: TV: Good Eats Episode: Steak Your Claim Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OWeVbhTwA38 Cooking is a terrifying, nebulous impossibility if you have no idea what you're doing. The recipes on this show are pretty basic, but Alton Brown takes the time to break down how and why the recipe is working on an easy to understand scientific level, so you can feel confident in making modifications. If it weren't for Good Eats I'd still be stuck eating Pizza Pockets.

Orange_Lazarus posted:BEST: Holy cow, I did not remember that Recess went at a crack addict speed. I guess all those after school TV shows did, but now I just feel old. School computer edutainment did not get much better than Carmen Sandiego and The Oregon Trail. What do they got kids playing in the library these days?

Thanks to him, I knew a poo poo ton of science stuff before elementary school, because I watched the day show every day when I was kid starting at the age of 2. Beakman's World and the Magic School Bus were okay, but Bill Nye was better. But you forgot the best episode; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=svHQ4BQY__o http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QECq6M3nPew

To be fair, pretty sure the Cops in Ballard sketch was from Almost Live! Still a decent show though. BEST: Educational Video Game: Mario Teaches Typing Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVtw-ctzA7Q Summary: What better way to learn typing skills than to integrate a popular video game character? The games Mario's Time Machine/Mario is Missing tried to do this as well (I loved those games though). I'd always wish for indoor recess in fifth grade so I'd be able to play this game.

Staplerfahrer Klaus: Der erste Arbeitstag is regularly shown during forklift truck driving courses and work safety courses even though it's actually made for artistic purposes. The only problem I see with it education-wise is the fact that the forklift is obviously electric but it's portrayed as having a diesel or gasoline engine in one scene.
