I'm on vacation in the Caribbean and brought some of my camera equipment. I went on a little walk along the beach for a while, and came across this place. Details after the photos.![]() Original view from the beach. It's been overgrown pretty well. ![]() ![]() These are the guest rooms/villas. At best guess, you had an indoor bedroom/bathroom area (now sealed off) and a sort of outdoor kitchenette/bar, off to the left. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Presuming a fridge went in here. ![]() Very small side doors. No fatties allowed. ![]() Outdoor cabana/tent things. A lot of sand has blown in and made them look shorter. ![]() ![]() Even on these, the build quality looks pretty good. Nothing is creaking or really rotting out, despite not being touched in nearly a decade. ![]() Piles of coconuts. ![]() Peeking in here revealed a power station. Switches for lights, generators, etc. ![]() Main door to a villa. ![]() This looked to house a lot of generators and equipment. ![]() Employee offices. ![]() ![]() ![]() Really nice atrium in the middle of the employee area. ![]() Old fridge. Never did open it. Probably should have. ![]() The pool. This was probably the coolest find. It's in amazing shape, all things considered. ![]() ![]() Hot tub. ![]() This hot tub (I'm assuming that's what it is, anyways) was crazy deep. Like 5 1/2 or 6 feet. Not sure what the bar was used for. ![]() ![]() Another hot tub that actually fed into the pool itself. Neat. ![]() Changing rooms and showers. ![]() ![]() ![]() Little sprayer for sandy feet as you came in from the beach. ![]() This seemed to be the main hall/reception area. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Between asking some locals and employees, it seems this is owned by an old Italian woman, who clearly put a lot of money into the place. By my estimate, there's at least 60 villas here. Reports conflict as to whether or not she's dead and it's tied up in an estate, or that she's still alive, but has so much "crazy money" as one person put it, that she just doesn't care. It's been shuttered up and abandoned for 8-9 years now. Rumors swirled that it was actually built to launder money. Who knows? It's an awesome find, regardless. Despite outward appearances, I honestly believe it wouldn't take much to get this back up and running, at least compared to what it cost to build. It sounds like part of the reason it closed was access. There's no port here and the only way to the island is via a small grass runway. I can't imagine that made it easy to cover costs. I'll try and go get some more before I leave. I was a little wary to wander too far inland because there are supposedly some wild boars on this island and I'd really rather not gently caress with them. Equipment used: ![]() Olympus OM-D with Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 lens. If anyone wants hi-res pictures of anything, let me know.

There's no way that door is just unfriendly to fat people, how could anyone of average size fit through it without having to turn sideways?

Where is that? It looks very similar to an abandoned resort we saw on Grace Bay in Providenciales. Fantastic pictures, by the way!

Cool find, OP. Sans all the debris, it's amazing how well that place held up. If you go back, can you open the fridge?

I always enjoy these Urbex threads. It's wierd to think that places get abandonbeed rather than sold off for even a little bit of money. Thanks for taking the time to share this OP.

Hamburlgar posted:I always enjoy these Urbex threads. It's wierd to think that places get abandonbeed rather than sold off for even a little bit of money. Welcome! The thing is, this has to be a tough place to sell. Given the amount of villas, this has to have massive overhead, and probably would need to be running at around 75% capacity (my mostly uneducated estimate) almost constantly to keep up with costs. Meantime, you can only have people arrive and depart via small (maybe 8 passenger) plane, and they shut the airstrip down for a few months each summer to re-seed the runway. I can see why others would be slow to buy it.

I was just in Mexico and there were a lot of similar resorts/houses abandoned north of Puerto Morelos (Cancun area) - someone told me that it was the result of a hurricane (prior to the financial meltdown). Any idea if there was a similar weather event that may have lead to this place's abandonment?

I know this is goony as gently caress, but holy poo poo would that be an awesome place to buy and move like 20 people in and just start clearing it out and rehabbing it. What is the fishing like in the area? Could we grow a bunch of drugs and have a psychadelic based resort? I mean, with moderm military equipment, 20-30 motivated people could take over the whole island!

Should see blue roofs on a few of the buildings.
