If there's one thing about anime I like it's a new season. Looking through the list of new shows and picking out the shows with the qualifications to be great, weeding out the obvious chaff, and deciding which have just enough potential to take a risk on. But it's pretty clear that not everyone one around here feels the same way. Some people just want to go straight to the good, quality stuff and not waste time with any junk. At the same time I've noticed that a lot of really great shows wind up dismissed or ignored by the majority. And it might help everyone's mental state to have a place to vent about the truly terrible stuff we all run into from time to time. So here's a thread for people to post reviews of shows they've watched over the last season. And generally discuss the season overall. You might say there are other ways to sort out good shows but I think all of them are lacking a bit. The current season thread tends to become a general news thread and get abandoned as soon as the new one goes up. Show threads are spoileriffic and the small number of people voting on threads means not a lot get rated very highly. That's, of course, assuming a show even gets a thread or doesn't get a thread that falls off right away because there's not much to really discuss. And the best anime of the year threads are pretty limited in a lot of ways. I might not consider Another to be in the top five shows of the year when it aired, but I might recommend it to people who are into horror and missed it, for example. There's also the ADTRWiki but Zorak himself has pointed out how difficult it is to remind people to go out and post there. Hopefully this thread can help with that as well. If people are willing to just cut and paste from what they post here or even expand a bit on their opinions on the wiki then it can help it become the useful resource it should be. Remember this thread will eventually wither and die, but the wiki is foreva. And surely you want to preserve you valuable insights into the quality of Japanese cartoons for future generations, don't you? A few guidelines that will hopefully keep things on track: 1. Post shows from this season only. That means generally things that began or ended this season. Trip reports from ongoing shows are fine but most of those have their own megathreads anyway. If a show continues into the next season you can just give your impressions as to whether it's worth getting into, a wait and see kind of thing, or not worth bothering with. Basically I just don't want things to get derailed by someone's edgy Evangelion or Vandread reviews. If you forgot what shows happened this season look here. 2. Assume someone reading this thread has seen nothing from this season and use spoiler tags appropriately. Rather than just straight reviews I wouldn't mind seeing a bit of discussion here too. Things like why a show was good or bad or what made a particular character engaging are certainly welcome. That can lead to bringing in things from the source material like VNs, light novels and such. Make sure the in these cases it's clearly marked what exactly your spoiling. And on that topic don't assume everyone is following the thread super closely and is willing to go back multiple pages to figure out what you're spoiling. Make sure the show being spoiled is marked somewhere in your post. It's easy to quote someone then get quoted back and before you know it you're just posting a bunch of black bars with no context. Try to avoid that! 3. If you want to review a show you've dropped that's fine. Like I said it's good to vent sometimes. But make sure to point that out and maybe give a general indication where you stopped watching. Some people might give more weight to someone who's watched the whole thing. And there are certainly shows that start mediocre or bad then get pretty good later on. Someone who stopped watching Level E before the third episode would have stopped watching just before the show got great, for example. Highlights and Lowlights of the season: If the thread seems to be coming to a consensus on certain shows being particularly good or bad I'd like to edit them into here to be a quick reference for people to see what good stuff they missed (or should avoid).

(double post to keep the op from being too cluttered) Ore no Kanojo to Osananajimi ga Shuraba Sugiru Dropped after about 5 eps when I literally cringed my way through a whole episode. This is bog-standard harem with a boring, useless protagonist that all the girls fall in love with for no reason. Then after a few episodes of ~wacky hijinks~ they try and put on a serious story except nobody actually cares about the terrible characters or what happens to them so it falls flat. All the JoJo references in the world can't save this show. Mondaiji-tachi ga Isekai kara Kuru Sou Desu yo? I think that this series is decent but also flawed. The setting and main characters are pretty interesting but the show doesn't really develop them much. Partially because it's only 10 episodes long, I'm sure. All the characters powers are very vaguely defined and seem to have effects the writers basically pulled from thier asses. Nowhere is that clearer than the case of Izayoi. He pretty much just wins fights with no real effort or suspense and is basically a Gary Stu type character who always has the perfectest plans and wins all his fights and is rude to everyone but they all know he's just the coolest so it's fine. It honestly hurt my enjoyment of the show quite a bit. I was hoping they would have more clearly defined abilities and that the games they were in would limit them and force them to find clever ways to use their powers or unexpected solutions. That never really happens, though. Overall it's not a terrible show but I can't help feeling it was so close to being this season's sleeper hit. I would watch a second season to see if it can live up to more of its potential but I wouldn't really recommend watching it as it stands. Chihayafuru I'm not really sure what I could say to make someone watch this that hasn't already been said a bunch, probably in the thread that's been stickied the entire season. This show is fantastic and I think that the second season has done a good job of adding new and interesting characters with their own unique take on the game of karuta. It may even be a rare situation with the second season being better than the first. I don't think anyone not watching this show has a right to complain about the current state of anime. Just watch it. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure I think this is a great adaptation of the manga. In fact, I think I would actually recommend people new to JoJo to watch the anime instead of reading the manga. Seeing the fights in motion, hearing the voice actors bring the lines that launched a thousand internet memes to life, the brilliant use of color to emphasize just how fabulous it all is. It just all comes together perfectly here. I do think that the first part of the story is not the best and people might be unimpressed at first. But the second part is even better than I remember it being when I read it years ago. It's definitely worth watching if only to see what the fuss is about.

Shinsekai Yori - From the New World For me this was the definite highlight of the season. It is an adaptation of a science fiction novel and it offers the best things science fiction can bring to the table. A detailed and interesting setting, a post-apocalyptic mostly agrarian society of psy-users, suspense, intrigue and action, and, depending on the interpretation, a look on current issues like relations between first and so-called third world. We follow a group of friends through their childhood and adolescence to their adult lives, while they become part of a local intrigue that could, in the end, endanger humanity. While never stupid, they act appropriate to their ages, and thus make mistakes, without noticing, that sometimes have repercussions much later. The main character narrates the previews in the most dread inducing ways, and we regularly spent the week awaiting and dreading the next episode.

Yama no Susume (Encouragement of Climb) This is one of the many shorts to air this season, and one of two worth watching. It's a light hearted slice of life story that gives me the same warm fuzzy feelings as Hidamari Sketch or Sketchbook. For the plot, there isn't anything major; everything is outlined in the first episode, but it's just charming with the character interactions. It's not for everyone, but if you like the genre, it's worth checking out. Inferno Cop The other short show worth watching. It is one of the funniest shows I've seen since nichibros. Unbelievably over the top, you owe it to yourself to at least check it out. You'll know if you like it after the first, or maybe the second episode. Mangirl Four girls making manga. That's it. They actually talk about what goes into making manga, so it has that going for it, but not too much else. It can be a bit funny at times, but it's not enough to carry the show. It's better than the alternative this season though. Pass on it unless you really like the idea. Ai-Mai-Mi The other short about girls making manga. Flat out terrible. It's completely unfunny, and not even worth 3 minutes of your time for one episode. I tried the second, and it wasn't any better. The jokes are completely random, but from what I remember, don't even have any punchline. Somehow, it manages to be worse than Lucky Star. Minami-Ke Tadaima In this fourth season, it's back to being funny again. It's been a long time since I saw the first season, so I don't remember exactly how good it was, but this season is about as good. The cast of characters is still great, and everything in it just seems to work. The only thing I really miss are the serious faces, but if you want more Minami-Ke, definitely check it out.

unpronounceable posted:Yama no Susume (Encouragement of Climb) I agree this was pretty much the best of the short-form web anime things from this season. One of the few I've seen that could have done with being longer. unpronounceable posted:Mangirl The behind the scenes of manga making is pretty neat for people who enjoy stuff like Bakuman. It's a shame there weren't more interesting characters and jokes to go with it, though. unpronounceable posted:Ai-Mai-Mi I think the big problem is they try and cram as many jokes into the few minutes they have as possible. A good joke relies on timing and having space to breathe but even when something funny happens they're on to the next thing before you can really absorb it. I don't think it would have been better if it was longer but it might have managed mediocre.

Minami-ke Tadaima (season 4): Eh. So if you're not familiar with Minami-ke here's how it goes: Season 1 is really good. I loved it and I'll probably watch it again to see if I still do after this season. Season 2 is absolutely terrible. Watching it is a chore and a big waste of time, can't think of a single worthwhile episode. They introduced a new character who was so awful they purposefully wrote him out in the next season. Season 3 was good to see, since it brought back the general mood of season 1, but it definitely wasn't as good. So a few episodes into season 4 we seem to be on track to hit that season 1 quality again, right? Unfortunately not. The writing was really bad. Lots of short, unfunny gags. With a show like Minami-ke where you're just repeating the same formula each week, you should try to change it up. Though Hosaka (the best character) had a lot of screentime, they didn't do anything with it. I think there's about 3 or 4 episodes dedicated to some beach/pool setting because I guess that's what sells the discs? Who knows. In short this season was rather unfunny, but I might be dwelling a bit too much on a boring second half. If you like season 3 of the show, go for it, otherwise I'd suggest a pass. Straight Title Robot Anime: (To be fair, I've only watched about half of this show.) This is basically a less funny version of gdgd Fairies. In the future when humans are long gone, three very moe robots attempt to understand laughter to spread it and end the war. It is apparently done completely in Miku Miku Dance? Anyway, it's not really funny. The general flow of the gdgd fairies style is there, with a tad bit of the improvisational humor, but gdgd's jokes and charm not. It's a mix of out-of-context one liners and references that the characters attempt to explain the punchline of immediately after. It doesn't help that nearly half of these jokes are based on Japanese comedians whose comedy doesn't translate or make sense to English viewers. There's a segment every episode where they play the opening theme again (gundams fighting and all that) with some 'extra' element which was pretty funny the first time but it's not a joke that works more than once. If you liked gdgd fairies, give it a shot (season 2 is just finishing up) but know there's not going to be any Old Men Jumping this time around. If you haven't seen gdgd, go watch that instead. Zetsuen no Tempest (Blast of Tempest) Watch on Crunchyroll One of the most satisfying series I've watched in recent memory. To say this series has a lot of words would be an understatement, but the drama is solid and the writing well-rounded. Though the series doesn't excel in its first three episodes, it starts off watchable, and as the scale of the conflict in the story expands in scope, the world and the cast grows bigger, and it really sucks you in. The characters are each very distinct, well-characterized, and change visibly throughout the series, and the combination of romance, moral dilemmas, and literary reference is done tastefully. Most of all, the characters act rationally (or understandably irrational) rather than as caricatures of themselves. While the series isn't grimdark, it has a serious tone, and while it is serious, it is occasionally light-hearted. Perhaps also satisfyingly, it is very self-aware as a drama, inviting the viewer to consider whether it is a tragedy or a comedy up until the very end. Lastly, the art direction is neither saccharine nor gritty, but is clean and is a good fit for the story it tells, and I have absolutely no complaints about the music. All-around, a well-done series whose plot and characters and presentation proved to be very satisfying the entire way through. A definite watch.

Kotoura-San As a drama romcom, Kotoura-san knows nothing of subtlety hiding it's drama. When it comes to the drama, the writers want the audience to know what is happening on screen is tragic. The drama wants to be shoved in your face being melodramatic. If we can't expect much from the drama, what about the comedy? Once again I feel like this aspect is also lacking. Almost every joke can be seen as the male lead has a perverted fantasy of Kotoura; and then Kotoura will irritated at the joke. I think it would be acceptable if it only happened once, but instead it happens around 15 times. A vastly annoying part of the humor is that it comes at the wrong times, and instead causes the emotion the viewer previously had to disappear. The show also wants to drive in that Kotoura is a cute, innocent girl. It will be impossible to ignore how cute she can appear. I believe the character Kotoura would be more likable if she was portrayed in a different light. I think the show focused on the result. They did not care if the story makes sense or filled with plot holes as long as the viewer feels emotional. For example, Kotoura has to be saved from depression three times by her friends. I wouldn't mind as much if it wasn't the same issue every time disgused by a different context. To conclude, the incredibly forceful attempts to feel emotion for the show Kotoura-san is stifling, demonstrating an example of tell not show attitude to drama. If you dislike over the top melodrama and care about the plot progressing, then Kotoura-san should be avoided. McNagah fucked around with this message at Mar 30, 2013 around 08:39 |

GJ-bu A slice of life anime with well developed characters and thoughtful, evocative jokes. Each character has a clearly defined character and while the concepts of some jokes are repeated, each one is taken to its logical conclusion without being run into the ground. This all sets up for an emotional final episode that manages to avoid tearful melodrama, and thus the audience itself feels as though it is receiving a natural graduation from the GJ-bu. This was probably my favourite thing this season, and fans of the slice of life genre should totally check it out.

Sasaki-san@ganbaranai: Save yourselves, get out now. Went in blind because I heard it was a Shaft show, made it through four episodes before I dropped because there is literally nothing of value besides maybe a few (as in, two) pretty backgrounds. Bad writing, kind of uninspired direction overall, very real lack of that surreal shaft visual flair, and no real hooks to speak of since the plot is dumb as poo poo and never lasts more than an episode. I'm not even sure what they tried to do here, there's no tension so it's not dramatic, there's no good jokes so it's not comedy, and there's like two really weird madcap minutes per episode where they dumped the animation budget and everything happens at once so maybe it's just a really dull action show? Complete loving mess is what I'm getting at. Perhaps worst of all, the one girl never takes off her stupid nightie that makes her look like a mystical gnome of some sort but she's not a gnome, she's just a person, it is VERY misleading and I felt pretty let down by the reveal.

Well lets do this then Shin Sekai Yori - From the New World: Without a doubt, my show of the season. Loved the art style and both EDs, characters were simple but that's fine because the setting and storyline were fantastic. Information was given to the audience at a very good pace, the infodump that was episode 4 was very well placed and completely changed my perception on the rest of humanity. While there were occasional dips in animation quality, the overall show was top notch. Essentially, if you are not completely opposed to the genre, I would highly recommend Shin Sekai Yori. Psycho-Pass Came very close to stealing show of the season from SSY. Urobuchi does it again with great characters and enough suffering for the whole gang. Just about every single character is well developed. The music was quite good, as well. This and the first ED specifically are tracks that I think of when I think of Psycho-Pass. The action and suspense are well paced and the last couple episodes are simply fantastic. In short, Psycho-Pass is definitely worth a watch. Mondaiji-tachi ga Kuru Kara sou desu you? I love this anime. Shiroyasha and Izayoi make for the best scenes. With beta protagonists flooding the countryside, it's really nice to see him just not give two shits about anything. Some would see this as a flaw; it's difficult to create suspense when your protagonist might as well already be a god. Somehow, Mondaiji managed to keep me watching through all 10 episodes, and wanting more. It must have done something right. Oh, also, best ED of all time right here. I would recommend Mondaiji. Robotics;Notes No, go away, I don't want to talk about R;N. It only brings to mind wasted potential and broken dreams. Coming in from the S;G anime I expected great things, and in retrospect perhaps those expectations were a bit out of R;N's league. It had lower goals, while S;G was about time travel and saving the world, R;N was about high schoolers making a giant robot. It certainly wasn't as bad as C;H, don't get me wrong. What made the show fail to lead up to my expectations? Well, the characters were a lot more boring and realistic* (except for Frau, best character coincidentally), the main plot devices were uninspired and poorly explained, and the "save the world" plot seems like someone told the writers: "Oh yeah, and these guys have to save the world somehow. Could you fit that in somewhere?". In short, while not a bad anime per-say, I would have a hard time recommending it, even to fans of S;G. *relatively speaking of course Kotoura-san Oh dear. I had such high hopes for this anime after the first few episodes. The first episode might have gone a touch overboard with the soul-crushing depression, but it really seemed like we were in store for a romance/drama with character development and everything. Instead, we got a kind of half-hearted drama/comedy/romance thing with plotholes everywhere. Kotoura's ability is that she can read the minds of those around her, but has no control over this. But time and time again we see her specifically read the mind of one person, or having multiple people obviously deceiving her, etc etc. It becomes very tiring when the show doesn't even try to explain Kotoura's frankly very interesting ability, choosing instead to fill the time with poorly executed jokes at Manabe's expense. Sadly, with poor direction and a lack of consistency, I cannot recommend Kotoura-san to anyone.

Sakurazuka posted:Apparently winter season was the season of terrible half-arsed endings. (OR maybe that's just every season.) I personally think it was the season of terrible mothers ![]() Maoyuu Maou Yuusha This was a show I was looking forward to but was ultimately disappointed. It felt like it was constantly jumping from one thing to another and never focused enough. One minute it's serious discussion about medieval economics and the oppressiveness of serfdom, the next it's cringe-worthy romantic comedy. It feels like they're trying to hit as many plot points as possible without giving any detail or nuance to any of them. Apparently one of the fifty manga adaptations is better so I guess track that down if it seems like an interesting premise. I can't really recommend the anime, though. Bakumatsu Gijindan Roman This show seems pretty overlooked this season and it's not terrible. The early episodes give off a sort of anachronistic, medieval Lupin III vibe. Unfortunately, it can't really keep it up throughout. The cast is likable in my opinion but the plot is pretty bog-standard and utterly predictable. As a dumb action comedy show you could certainly do worse, but I don't know if there's anything really to recommend this show specifically. Zetsuen no Tempest Probably the sleeper hit of the season. The show starts off pretty bad with characters that aren't really likeable and action scenes that are laughably dumb. Pretty much an entire episode is one of the main characters jumping directly at a bad guy, getting bounced off his magic shield, then waiting a few minutes and doing it again. Fortunately the show eventually finds its footing and develops a pretty good plot, relying on good dialogue to move things along. And while the ending isn't mind-blowing it does manage to provide closure without screwing it up. I wouldn't say it's a perfect show by any means but definitely worth a watch. GJ-bu I found this show to be horribly generic. The main character is tremendously dull. The other characters are by-and-large going to be familiar to anyone who watches much anime. It's basically a harem-lite show that relies on the one-note personalities of its characters to supply any humor. One girl lacks common sense and is mystified by normal things. Another girl gets easily flustered and attacks the main character. And so on and so forth. I'd say unless you were looking for a relatively non-creepy harem show for whatever reason this show is a pass. Polar Bear Cafe Underrated and under appreciated. This show is a pretty laid-back and atmospheric kind of slice of life show that some people will like and others will be bored silly by. The jokes are often goofy but well done and the large extended cast of characters provides variety to keep things getting stale. I think everyone should at least give the show a few episodes. I think a lot of people would find it growing on them. Sasami-san@Ganbaranai I'm a little surprised at how negatively this show seems to have been received. I'm the type of person who likes to see shows that go out and try weird and different things over playing it safe and sticking to the accepted tropes. And this show is certainly that. The stories are more episodic and there's no real central plot. I think the way it used Japanese mythology is unique and pretty interesting. There are certainly some creepy elements that will turn people off. But unlike a lot of shows lately the incest stuff here is actually supposed to be creepy. It emphasizes that the main character has had an extremely messed-up childhood in her messed-up family. And it all helps explain why she acts the way she does. Nothing about the show is really extraordinary but I think it's worth a watch if you want something a little bit different. Kotoura-san Like I said above I like shows that try to break the mold and this is that. But I don't think it's entirely successful at being a good show. There's too much mood dissonance between the typical anime friends in a club stuff and the more serious aspects of the show. I also think characters change too quickly from, say, being depressed to happy. Or from being jerks to suddenly being good people. It's a good idea for a show that's just not executed quite well enough. I don't regret watching it but I don't know if I'd recommend it to anyone else. Tamako Market I liked this show quite a bit. It's definitely the definition of slice-of-life comedy. The plot never really goes anyplace interesting but I don't think it's actually trying to. It's kind of refreshing to see a show like this that doesn't try and shoehorn in a dumb serious plot to try and make it more significant. If you've ever watched a show and thought "man this is dumb if these people sat down for five minutes and talked everything would be resolved" than this is probably the show for you . The only real problem I have is that it feels a little too idealized at times. Everyone in the shopping district is a happy helpful person. The main character is unrealistically perfect as well. The whole thing can get a bit saccharine at times. But over all I think it's a good show worth watching as long as you don't mind nothing much happening.Psycho-Pass Another good show. The setting is a pretty standard utopia no wait dystopia sci-fi thing. But once you get a bit into the plot it has some interesting twists. It addresses that most people are pretty happy and that smashing the system is not necessarily the best option, at least in the short term. The characters are generally pretty well done and most get a chance for some growth over the course of the show. As for the ending I liked it. It doesn't wrap everything up in a neat little bow it's true. But I think that for what the show was trying to do offering easy answers would have been a huge cop-out. I think this show is very much worth watching for sci-fi fans or people just looking for a good serious show. Robotics;Notes This show is probably defined by people more by what it failed to be than what it is. It had such promise but ultimately failed to deliver on any of it. The show focuses too much on its boring main character pushing the much more interesting ones into the background. It also tries to have a serious world in danger plot that winds up falling flat on its face. It tries to be deconstructive by showing the real world issues with giant robots which is a cool idea. But then in uses a ridiculous deus ex machina to undercut that. Then the bad guy has a standard anime super robot anyway. It tries to put out a bunch of seemingly unrelated plot points but never really has them come together in a satisfying way. Each of the characters is established to have their own relationship with robots and reason for being in the robotics club (or not wanting to be there). Chihayafuru has shown that this can be an excellent way to make a show when done right. But this show doesn't. Steins;Gate worked as well as it did because it was a very personal story of a desperate man trying to fix his mistakes. Robotics;Notes forgets this and ignores the personal stories in an attempt to tell a more epic story. But it's really hard to care about when most of the characters seem to have no real stake. The majority of characters are in the end just to be there. They don't do anything significant nor does any real growth show by any of them. It should have been a crowning moment showing how far they've come and the bonds between each other but nope. I could go on but I'll just say I really can't recommend anyone watch this. Shin Sekai Yori This is a pretty great show. A lot of time is spent setting up the intriguing world and the characters in the early episodes. This makes for a slow start but I think it pays off in the long run. It shows the world is pretty screwed up. It also shows how it got there and the reasons for it, though. It can feel a little disjointed with frequent time skips that can change the characters and their relationships in confusing ways. It detracts from the story but doesn't ruin it. The final story arc is especially good and I think the show benefits a lot by going out on a high note. Like psycho-pass the show raises disturbing questions about society and what it does to survive. The ending manages to be satisfying but also a bit unsettling leaving you with questions about whether the main characters were in the right with their actions. Morally grey is a pretty good way to describe this show. Definitely one of the better shows I've seen in a while and I recommend everyone give it a shot.

Joshlemagne posted:Kotoura-san That's a very strange way of saying Kotoura-san is terrible, which it totally was. Wanted to be both a dark melodramatic show and a lighthearted romcom so the mood swung round more than a kid on a swing. The idea of establishing Kotoura's dark past in the first half of episode 1, but they went way too over the top and dwelled too long on it, plus the cat thing took it past "unhappy childhood" and straight into "God hates you" territory. It relied too hard on the same jokes over and over again, and unlike GJ-bu the jokes never developed, it was just "manabe is a pervert" for 12 episodes. The romance seemed forced, Kotoura is generic as a character, and the show's biggest hook (Kotoura is a psychic) was really underdeveloped. In fact, I suspect the only reason they made Kotoura psychic as opposed to say, a compulsive liar, is so they could have her be even more of a victim. They establish the psychic powers, then spend the rest of the season making them less and less powerful, to the point where you wonder why they even concluded it. In conclusion, Kotoura-san is a somewhat interested idea that was completely and utterly ineffectually utilised. Absolute horseshit anime that I wouldn't recommend to my worst enemy. Rewatch Chuu-2 instead

Joshlemagne posted:I'm a little sad the thread didn't see more participation. I think maybe the op had too many rules or people just felt there were other places to better express their opinions. But if it got one person to watch some good, overlooked shows than I think its served its purpose so thanks for posting that I'm kind of done with watching shows as they come out, especially with a number of shows starting off strong but failing in the end in the last year or so. Definitely appreciated people's recommendations, and although I don't have any new stuff to add I'll nth the recommendations for Shin Shekai Yori and Zetsuen no Tempest. Guess I should stick with the format of the thread, so; Shin Shekai Yori Dark as hell, the number of horrible decisions made for ultimately good reasons was pretty mind-numbing. The pacing was all over the place, time skips were frequent and poorly explained, and the setting wasn't fleshed out very well, but in the end all of these decisions were made purposefully so that the show actually worked as a whole. Best show I've seen in years, if you can handle a bit of gore and don't mind odd pacing, I can't recommend this enough. Zetsuen no Tempest Can't recommend this quite as highly, but this was a great character piece. And it had a really good ending (don't look up spoilers, although you probably wouldn't even understand them anyway). Give the first few episodes a try and, if you like the characters, try and stick it out through the slow middle because man does it pick up at the end!
