Apparently the HRV Cloak does NOT make an audible pinging noise. It seems that noise is only heard by the user.

So I'm now in love because it's way easier to ambush people with this thing on my back.
At least the noise is heard by your teammates. I have yet to use the cloak myself and I've heard the noise lots of times, but I also remember getting quite ambushed by HRV-cloaked enemies too.

I like this game. I just played it and had a lot of fun with the stock gear yesterday, then tried the premade AK today and it was even better. Does it make sense to keep re-renting the premade every day or should I also get some parts for it? I can't really tell what's a useful piece of gear, so I'm inclined to stick with the premade, as it doesn't seem gimped in any bug way, and I don't want to sink a lot of GP into it only to discover that I really like the HAR better.
Also, since the AR is supposedly bad at hipfiring, does it make sense to get a shotgun for a secondary, to fill that CQC role? I'm partially inclined to think that if a guy gets that close to me, I messed up and probably deserve to get killed, but at least I could have a shot at winning the engagement, which seems tricky with the AK.
And is there a GP unlock for loadout slots? I feel like 1 loadout slot will get old fast, but I'm reluctant to put :tenbux: into a game unless I think I will be playing for a while.

Baron Fuzzlewhack

ALIVE ENOUGH TO DIE

You will unlock a second loadout slot for free at level 10 or so. Otherwise, you have to purchase the rest with real money. Personally, I rarely switch guns mid-game so having two loadout slots is already overkill.

If the premade AK (or any other gun) works for you, keep renting it! It'll be the most cost-efficient way to use a gun other than the default starting one. Later on when you have a decent pool of GP saved up you can start looking at parts to fit whatever role you're trying to fill, starting with a scope as that's probably the most important part.

Also be aware that you can't customize premade guns, just the receivers on which the premades are based.

Definitely grab a shotgun as your secondary for close-quarters. If you can aim well, it'll treat you well.

Second loadout slot is at level 5, I believe.

And premades are definitely the way to go at the beginning; I personally used to try a different one every day, but that's just me. After you have a bunch of 3-day trial packs in your inventory, you can activate several all at once and spend a weekend learning the ropes of gun customisation/tweaking with all the assorted free muzzles and stocks you opened.

The AK isn't that bad at hipfiring, it's just worse than the AR. But yeah, the shotgun is currently the unquestioned king of CQC support.

I feel like the AK is actually really good at hipfire. Using my custom one, I only bother with irons if the guy is at twice effective shotgun range or more.

I didn't even realize until today that the orginal Blacklight: Tango Down is currently on sale for $1.24 as part of the "Indie Sale" currently going on on Steam. I checked back in on it for the first time in roughly 3 years (Having originally bought it when it first came out on Steam), and surprise surprise: Nobody is playing the GFWL-powered multiplayer. There's a co-op mode though (Which can also be played solo), which I'm currently trying to convince a friend to play with me.

It's pretty loving nuts looking at the early versions of concepts that re-appear in Retribution. Like an older version of HRV, and seeing some of the same weapon parts in the customization menus that still exist in the new game. If I end up convincing my aforementioned friend to play some co-op with me, I may record the endeavor and post it here so all of y'all can see the "early seeds" of Retribution.

EDIT: Also, the menu music is the dopest poo poo.

Eh. It's okay but pretty much a standard CoD/Counterstrike clone. It has a neat visual design that is repeated in BLR. The co-op was kinda fun. Maybe I could intrude in Habermann's sessions? (probably not because GFWL is rear end)

It's worth $1.24... Assuming you have 3+ friends to play it with: The minimum player count requirement for a multiplayer match is 6 players, which is impossible to gather through GFWL match-making, and those co-op missions are really tailored towards having partners to play with [but can be played solo if you really hate yourself]. The most interesting things about it are the HRV and weapon customization, which you already have / are greatly expanded on in Retribution.

If anything, it's worth buying (For $1.24 and not a penny more) just to see for yourself how far the mechanics have come. "Humble beginnings" and all that.

If you got any hardsuit camos, you can easily trade them for more than you spent. Even TSMGs can go for ~5k GP each.

No, but this time around I got none of those. But it couldn't have been the 100GP pack since the 50 pack for that only costs 5000 and I had twice that at the start.

I'd like to take a moment to talk about a really under appreciated piece of equipment: The Firewall breach kit.

While the revive and heal injectors are really good overall, sometimes you want something a little different.
The firewall kit is awsome because it does so many different things, and has the awesome benefit of being 100% passive . That's right, you don't have to do anything special to get the benefits. No more fiddling with your buttons or deaths due to not being able to switch off it fast enough.

What does it do? Well, it does all of the following...

  • reduces the number of guesses in the hacking mini game to 2
  • allows for one error while hacking before being booted
  • Doubles the duration of your firewall in DOM games
  • Slight increase to HRV recharge time
  • slight increase to Maximum HRV time
  • doubles (roughly) the speed at which you hack into enemy hardsuits

I burned an enemy out of his hardsuit in the last stretch of a siege game and proceeded to take out the scorpion and hold off their entire team untill time ran out.

What isn't pictured: the meltdown of the dude who I grabbed the hardsuit from. I was fed well on pubbie tears for the next whole round.

Yup I've been using it for a while now and it's great. It's also really loving useful when you're on the team escorting the Scorpion because it takes about 10 seconds to unlock any of the consoles.

The HRV recharge buff is more than slight. Hacking everything with on two moves is also awesome for more than just DOM and Siege. Throwing open doors is more useful than you'd think. I love my "hack-o-pack".

Aside from the obvious domination uses, you need to get used to opening and closing doors to control the flow of enemies and how to used it to your advantage. But once you do, shutting a door on an enemy with the flag in CTF is so drat satisfying.

Either have played in the beta or have bought 2000+ ZEN, plus be level 25 (and some other stuff like X kills that you definitely have if you are level 25).

Note that this was the last time they sent the pack out, so if you didn't qualify don't rush it since it's too late. Just do these new missions and hope you get the same bug - the veteran pack is worth 3000-4000 ZEN in trading, by the way. Nevermind, I misread Azzanadra's post.

I've spent the past few days trying out the AR, SMG, TSMG, BFR, and HAR premades... and I keep coming back to the AK. It just feels so strong over such a variety of ranges. With every other gun I either couldn't aim it or had gaps in where I was really vulnerable, but every game where I pick up the AK I was in or close to the top 3, which almost never happened with any other gun. It must be love.
The TSMG was a lot of fun sometimes, when I was in the groove for it. Surprise triple kills when sneaking up on groups? I'll take it! I can see that like a speed build with HRV cloak and TSMG would be awesome.

I think he might be talking about the one that sometimes happens when you get into the tank. Occasionally it will be this weird obscured angle that looks like you are stuck in the turret. It sucks because you can't really see anything when it happens.

EDIT: Good to know we lost to a fellow goon. I was worried there for a bit.

I remember having a lot of fun playing this game at launch, but was incredibly annoyed by the menu system. Mainly the opening of the mail tab to open the mail to loot the item to go and open the item just to realize it's something I really don't care about anyway and the match already started. Other than that this game was just a whole lot of fun and I can't believe I let other FPS games take my attention away from this when this is F2P.

I think my biggest problem when I played was mainly not knowing where to go or what to try. Partly because an hour after I finished playing around with a weapon I forgot what weapon it was, how it handled and if I liked it or not. I'll need to seriously find a guide or something to make my path to a fattie-high damaged beast a reality. Because who doesn't love that one moment where you can literally just slowly walk forward at the other team and getting a ton of kills.

Yeah, that's the camera glitch I was talking about. You stare at the giant cylinder on the underside of the tank and you can't see anything at all.

Is there a way to set it so you can see newly acquired items or something? The new mission reward pack just usually says redeemed and I have to go hunting through my inventory to see if I acquired anything interesting to play with.

If you wait in the after-mission screen (the one with XP/GP amounts) the items you won will pop up under Spoils of War. I think it's only for the ones that are automatically activated though; the missions that need to be manually redeemed - notably the bunny hop hourly mission - won't appear there.

There's a dev post on the official forums saying that they want to address the issue so that you can actually tell what you won.

In other news, one unexpected benefit of running a tank build: since any weapon with runspeed worse than -0.30ish is going to hit the minimum speed cap anyway, you can still make a bolt-action rifle that looks good (read: doesn't have a stupid short barrel) without needlessly sacrificing other stats for useless accuracy, given that speed penalties don't apply any more. Case in point, the Fastest Gun in the East (server):

The last stock has slightly better rate of fire, but the Stabilized lacks a scope-in penalty which makes it much better when paired with lighter scopes. Plus it matches the AK barrel nicely, you get a nice hunting-rifle-ish looking thing. (And yeah, I'll get around to putting an extended mag on it eventually.)

I'm OK with the BPFA, depending on the map.

The heartbreak of being a rushdown SMG user is that most of the pubs out there A: think they're God with a sniper rifle, so they always play BFR-only; B: think that the only fun thing to do is snipe hallways, so they won't follow a rush no matter what the mode is, and C: are completely rotten to the point where they can't even get kills sniping a hallway.

Of those who don't, most of them have no idea how to assault a point, so when you charge around a corner they'll just sort of stand there staring at it. (Sometimes they also throw a grenade in a random direction.)
