So, WB and Turbine announced today that they'll be bringing out a DC comics-based MOBA called Infinite Crisis, wherein you play as DC characters from a variety of different universes. It's scheduled for release "during 2013", which gives them plenty of time to get this thing rolling. The trailer above shows a little bit of gameplay and a decent amount of characters, and you can find some more concrete info about the abilities of (some of) the characters being shown off over on the game's official site.

Personally, I'd been wondering how long it would take for Marvel or DC to get a superhero-centric MOBA out there, and the multiverse-inspired approach they're going with here is potentially the best way to have a lot of character variety while still letting everyone be Batman at the same time. Normal Batman taken? How about Vampire Batman? Gotham by Gaslight Batman? Eagerly awaiting Green Lantern Batman and Russian Martian Batman. Alternately, Fat Joker With Weaponized Ham is sure to be a favorite.

But really, as someone who's kind of blah on the fantasy setting everything seems to be using these days, but still being interested in playing a MOBA style game, this could scratch an itch that I've had for a while.

You can sign up for the beta here.

So a DC comics MOBA and a Marvel Diablo clone. I wondered when people would realize the innate money in "licensed media + easy to replicate F2P."

EDIT: v Honestly, I only skimmed but I can't find any immediate parallels. There's not even a Pudge knockoff that I saw, and every MoBA has a Pudge knockoff.

If someone who's more well-versed in MOBA titles than I am could take a look at the Champions page on the game's site and let us know what characters seem to be parallels to LoL/Dota 2 characters and what ones seem like something weirder or less derivative, it'd be super appreciated. I know gameplay basics about MOBA stuff but character specifics is where I kind of fall apart. Most of what caught my interest here was the DC comics setting, so a more seasoned eye's opinion on what we know thus far would be great to see.

We've already got three Batmans, two more would be pretty easy to do(off the top of my head, Batman Beyond and Azrael Batman would both probably be pretty unique and asked for by players).

Hell, WB finally worked out the 1960s Batman TV show licencing issues recently and DC is launching a comic in that continuity, let's get Adam West Batman in here.

I play Dota. I skimmed the current roster, and saw a lot of familiar skills (Gaslight Batman appears to have something resembling Clockwerk's hook and Furion's ult, and also a ton of weird nukes even though he's listed as having high attack power) but no real hero-for-hero parallels. I could be way off, though, and there's something I missed.

One thing I did notice is they're going with a flat "One passive, four actives" for their hero design. Dota has a minimum of four skills per hero, with a few outliers having more, ranging from "3 passive, 1 active" to "4 actives, one of which creates two more".

The four skills, one passive thing is lifted straight from LoL.

What if they just make the whole Bat Family? Theres a lot of Batpeople; 4 Different Batmen, 4 Robins, 4 Batgirls, Oracle, a Dog, That issue in the 1960s with the BatChimp.

Oh wow, it'll be real interesting to see a MOBA with real money and marketing power behind it for once. More competition is always good!

I just hope they're more inspired by DOTA design than League's.

e: but looking at the page it's looking a bit grim ('champions', the 4 skills 1 passive design, terms like suppression and knockup etc). I think that's probably a mistake on their part since LoL already has the casual free to play market on lockdown. Offering a more hardcore alternative might have been a better idea and they can avoid HoN's pitfall by leveraging their brand recognition.

I'm a FAIRY!

I think at this point more people play LoL than know what a Batman is, so we'll see how this one shakes out.

The thing I found about most of the community in the MOBA genre is that they're in it to destroy the other team and feel good about themselves most of the time. Improving their game is not part of their strategy. This means that once they learn a moba they stick to that moba, and won't even TRY something else.

No granted there's plenty of the dedicated players who actually want a good game, but you don't get 3 million unique logins a day with just those guys.

Anyways I wish it luck, because more competition is a good thing, also I do know what a Batman is, and Batman kicks rear end.

DotA 2 exists. Any market for a "more hardcore than LoL" thing died right there. Its a hell of a lot easier to design a casually appealing game to rope people in with your IP than to make a more precision and wide curve ability balanced game to appeal to people who already have the game they want and it has existed for a decade+

As a pretty hardcore DOTA2 player, and given what has happened with every other bit of DC IP (Arkham Asylum/City notwithstanding) I can't imagine it'll be worthwhile holding out hope for this, or (better) a Marvel MOBA, either. The two licenses have been pretty awfully handled by the games industry, and they seem to just be perfect in execs mind for land-grab style games where you know and just don't care that it's going to fail in under a year.

Here's to hoping, I guess, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Jumpjet, melta, jumpjet. Repeat for ten minutes or until victory is assured.

I have a really hard time seeing this be any good. It's a licensed property, they tend to be easy cash-ins, and while they don't always have the best reputation for being nice to gamers, F2P games like LoL or Dota2 really do take real dedication from their dev teams to keep alive. I expect that this game will be phoned in.

Looking at the champion skills it looks like they're absolutely LoL inspired. Chances are it's the game that the dev team has actually played so there really is no escaping it. The console Lord of the Rings Moba was a LoL clone and this game will be too, along with whatever other Moba comes out for the foreseeable future. It really sucks cause Dota's hallmarks include absolutely no paying/grinding for power, unique and crazy hero designs, and a huge focus on balanced competitive play that even new players can get involved in. Lol went the other direction in all those aspects.

The MOBA genre's getting a lot bigger and I have no experience with them. Any recommendations oh where to start? League of Legends sounds like it has a horrible online community and I spectated a few matches of DOTA 2 and couldn't understand it. As for the game it looks like another attempt at Gotham City Impostors, hope it turns out fun.

The thing is if you want to play one of these games and get the most out of it you have to go through the learning curve. Dota and LoL both have it and you need to know a lot of basic things, such as positioning, what skills do, what items to buy, builds, etc. Plus you can choose what role you play or learn how to play each role (Jungler, Support, Carry, etc). Just play with friends if you think the community sucks, but the community for this new one doesn't seem like it will be any different than what is already out there.
