The Tiffany Aching series (Wee Free Men, Hat Full Of Sky, Wintersmith and I Shall Wear Midnight) is a real awesome series about discworld witches and written for young adults, if you haven't checked it out yet and you love the witches you totally should. My first videogame that I owned was a mario game - I got a SNES with SMW+AllStars, so I had Mario 1, 2, 3, Lost Levels and SMW all on the one cartridge. With remixed sprites on the older games!

Funnily enough, in 7-4 (the looping bowser castle level) in the SNES super mario all stars remake, there's a buzzer/doorbell noise when you go down the wrong/right path. I guess they realised it was bullshit when they upgraded the graphics.

I like how the demo at the 'press start' screen completely shows off what the deal is with the poisoned mushrooms, so it's not completely out of left field. The spring is a piece of poo poo though.

Oh man I just realised there's game design behind the stupid spring too - they bottleneck you into getting a star. Players have been taught that when you get a star you book it as fast as possible since you're invincible - and it's timed so you hit this new obstacle at the tail end of the star, so you're probably still in 'go go go rush rush rush!' mode when you hit it - which is how you're meant to get past that obstacle anyway.

I think it varies on levels - some of the 'haha go back to world 1 fucker' warps are beyond the castles, others just have a brick wall where you have to wait for time to run out.

Thanks for that reminder, Glazius, I was totally gonna write something about that when I first watched the video. Mario in gameplay is Some Jackass Who Jumps High, conceivably a normal person. Wario is literally a cartoon character - in his games he's able to transform himself cartoonishly to overcome platforms (setting his rear end on fire = running at super speed, getting smashed on the head by an anvil = able to fit through tiny spaces). So it makes sense in the same cartoon logic that Wario dropping something on Mario's head would cause him to be inflicted by The Slapsticks.

I picked up Yoshi New Island New D New S alongside Kirby Triple Deluxe, it's a bit easier than the original game, the new Yoshi noises are infuriating, and one of the bonus levels is an entirely vertical level based around the flutter jump... which you haven't had to use substantially yet (and the one time you're forced to use it you can bypass with the cheaty wing) and isn't really taught properly.

In this game, eggs can bounce twice, turning from green to yellow to red with each bounce. You can lick up a bouncing egg to reset it at its current colour, resetting the bounce counter. Yellow eggs give you a coin, red give you two tiny starmen. In New Island, every source of eggs has a chance to come out yellow or red, but for some reason now only green eggs can be bounced twice - if you pick up a yellow egg it can only be bounced once, and red eggs have to be thrown directly at their target without bouncing. If it isn't clear, New Island is trash poo poo. Oh and also if you throw a big egg so it hits the ground, all enemies on screen turn into starmen.
