Is that any good? I thought about checking it out but it had fairly mixed reviews.

It's good but brutally cynical and depressing. Evangelion is about how hard it is to form human connections, Zero Theorem is about actively sabotaging your own ability to relate.

e: It's kind of hard to explain, but there's an edge, a self-loathing nastiness to it that even Brazil, for instance, doesn't come close to reaching.

That sounds interesting at least. The newest Gilliam I've even seen is Twelve Monkeys, so the idea of seeing something from him in the 21st century is still kind of intriguing to me.

Much like how a new Evangelion movie to watch would be interesting. This is is still on-topic.

Some kind soul has posted academic articles about NGE online for free.

I used to be able to access some of these through stuff like JSTOR and Project MUSE, but its nice to seem them available for everyone. Thought y'all might be interested.

EDIT: Hmm, some of the links don't seem to work on that page. :smith:

Still, some of them do!

The fact that they don't show it to Shinji in particular doesn't mean much because Shinji is tremendously self-absorbed.

Truth. Even if someone pointed out that these characters aren't exclusively cold to him, he wouldn't see it. Being a teenager is a very self absorbed experience, especially if your life is hell like his.

ImpAtom posted:

A decade's worth of anger and frustration means people do not always act rationally. Plus the people who talked to him are Asuka (making GBS threads on him isn't new), Misato (clearly struggling) and Ritsuko (Ritsuko.) Plus I guess Toji's sister who is reasonably nice to him.

I think this is the key and what someone else said, sorry if that someone was you impatom. We peel off from the end of 2.22 and jump right into 3.33 and sympathize and empathize with Shinji, "you people were cheering him on!" But his intention or information he had when he nearly destroyed the world doesn't matter. The effects of his decision have been everyone's waking lives, and oh look, he's apparently immortally young too? What a fuckin rear end in a top hat.

Eventually, even in short periods of time, intention doesn't matter when the effects are so brutal and constant reminders. Hell, people either probably wish he had meant to do it so he couldn't hide behind ignorance or convinced themselves he meant it all along

I liked this series overall and see where all the praise comes from, but the angels were the thing I liked most and they turned out to be pretty unimportant in the grand scheme of things. Also there was some pretty cringey sex stuff that felt wildly out of place.I dont need to see a 14 year old's tits or jizz ffs.

Evangelion isn't really supposed to be "sexy". i.e. the scene where Shinji falls on a naked Rei isn't meant to be titillating, it's meant to be extremely uncomfortable. Shinji jerking off on a girl in a loving coma is extremely shocking and really sets the tone for the movie. It's not "hot", it's beyond disgusting and pathetic and it is the very peak of Shinji's self-loathing. It's an incredibly ballsy thing to put in a film.

That said, a lot of people didn't exactly get the memo so there's an enormous amount of merchandise of Rei and Asuka in sexual poses and outfits that pathetic nerds jerk off to.

It's... kind of hilarious how so much of Eva's message is utterly lost on otaku.

I think an issue here is that it's mixed. Some of Eva is meant to be fanservice, unironically so. Some of that fanservice is twisted later but not all of it. So you have both unironic fetishizing mixed with genuinely hosed-up sexuality which I think contributes to how people miss the message.

I think calling it "unironic fanservice" is kind of devoid of meaning if we're talking about evangelion. However, I totally understand what you're saying. I think our words are just failing to describe the nuance going on here.

Asuka's transparent plugsuit is the most egregious example of this since I'm almost positive it pretty much exists entirely so porn artists and doujin PVC figure makers could make a mint off otaku.

It's a shame because the normal plugsuit designs are rad pilot suits.

It's weird how rampant it is in 2, and I'm still not been shown that Marie has a point in the narrative beyond her schoolgirl outfit and huge tits but maybe like you said there will be a reason for it. I do like that it is a bit more sexualized than the others and it also features Shinji at his most "badass", like he's imposing his teenage masculinity on the actual fabric of the film. But that's flimsy

Raxivace
Sep 9, 2014

Yeah I'd be kind of surprised if Mari actually ends up having some huge impact on the narrative at this point, though I don't really mind.

At this point it's kind of hard for me to talk too long about Rebuild because so much of my opinion about 3.0 (and the rewrites as a whole) come down to "I need to see how it ends." Because whether Shinji actually reaches some sort of cathartic epiphany or something in 4.0 or if things go all EOE again will really change the context I'd be looking at 3.0 and all its weirdness and pain in.

3.0 was a pretty simple and straightforward story that works well in the already well-known context of the rest of the Evangelion stories.

Sure. It's not so much that I don't understand 3.0 so much as seeing what happens next will affect how I feel about the events of that movie.

Eva 3.0 is not a confusing story, but I also don't think it's a particularly good one either. Outside of Death & Rebirth it might be my least favorite part of Eva's anime franchise.
