Let's talk about one of the major influences on Anno himself, and Evangelion in particular: UFO

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XAIXP937Ac

UFO was Gerry Anderson's first live action project. After years of doing Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, Supercar, and the other marionettevision projects, he finally graduated to doing more adult oriented live action programs. It ran for 1 season in 1970, and was followed up by the much more popular Space: 1999 As you can see from the opening sequence, many of the NERV costume designs were based on Sylvia Anderson's UFO ones. Indeed, Evangelion's opening itself pays homage to UFO with all the various flashing words throughout.

The similarities don't end there, either: the Earth is being invaded by aliens about which we know nothing, seem to want nothing, and are almost impossible to communicate with. We never see more than two of them at a time. They look like green skinned humans, and perhaps their planet needs to harvest our organs to keep themselves alive? They have no name, and are simply referred to as "The Aliens" for the show's entire run. They are opposed by a shadowy organization that hides in bases underground, on the moon, under the sea, and throughout the air. SHADO stands as the only life of defense against this mysterious and strange invasion force.

The head of this top secret organization, Colonel Ed Straker, routinely makes hard decisions that leave him emotionally drained and shut off from others. He has an estranged son he lets die because stopping the aliens is more important. He has a tense relationship with his ex-wife that goes more and more downhill as he sacrifices more and more for his job. The few friends he does have are all fellow officers and soldiers, and as a result they tend to die unexpectedly. He is driven, manipulative, cold, and willing to sacrifice anything to drive off the Aliens. Sound like anyone else we know?

Viewed through a certain lens, Evangelion works quite well as a spiritual sequel to UFO, asking what might have happened if Straker's son hadn't died, and what their relationship might have been like years and years later.

Anno's first animation group was named SHADO, if that gives you any indication to the degree of his fandom.

The show is available on DVD, and is totally worth your time. It's certainly a product of its time, but the miniatures work is excellent, the writing and acting fantastic, and the production values as good as they could be back then. If you want to know where Eva came from, this is one of the shows to watch.

Possibly dumb theory here, but I noticed a little similarity.

Gurren Lagann has a 4 act structure, indicated by the changes in the opening theme animations. Eva Rebuild is a 4 movie series.

-The first eight episodes and the first film are a somewhat generic giant robot show/movie with pretty good production values and a compelling cast for those not familiar with its antecedents, that set up a lot of what is going to happen later. Doesn't stand on its own, and isn't as good as what follows it, but it necessary to allow the later events to happen.

-The next eight (9-16) and second film are a kick-rear end overcoming of depression and learning to love another person interspersed with awesome robot battles, followed by a skippable recap episode. Compare Shinji/Rei with Simon/Nia: a dark haired young mecha pilot with self-esteem problems and who lives in the shadow of "real men" falls in love with the pale skinned clone daughter of a bearded evil guy who wants to control the world because he thinks he knows what's best for it. Said pilot tears the world apart to save her.

-The next seven (17-23) and the third film are a time skip into a dark future where it turns out that burning passion, strength, self-confidence, and learning to love both yourself and others just aren't enough to sustain a society, and that in the end the events of the preceding two stories may have been meaningless in the face of what's coming next. Everything is dark and grim, and the protagonist is hated by nearly everyone for the society and immanent destruction that has resulted directly from his actions.

-The last arc (24-27) is, well, amazing, and tells act 3 to go gently caress itself with a solid punch to the jaw and a rejection of depressive thinking, with characters learning to grow up and love themselves and forgive one another and actually deal with their problems rather than trying to stop the world based on what might happen if you take a risk or attempt change! :kamina: What will happen in the 4th Eva film?

Now, I know Anno isn't directly working with Gainax anymore, we've yet to see the 4th film, and that GL can easily be seen as a reaction the original Eva TV and film series, but damned if they aren't matching up closely, in my head anyways.

Rebuild is based on the Jo-ha-kyū structure. It's even in the Japanese titles.

Specifically, the ha movement (3.0) details transgressions.

Sure, except for that 4th part stuck on the end there ;)

I count 4 acts, for the same reason that Waiting for Godot is a two act play. Even if Anno's using the traditional structure, there are 4 discrete bits.

Granted, Gurren Lagann does have its share of repetition and eternal return also...

It actually predates TTGL by many, many years. (And if you haven't, see Gunbuster. It's as much of a prequel to Eva as UFO is)

Found something else folks might not have seen yet, but is well worth your time.

As most folks know Hideki Anno is a huge Ultraman and Kamen Rider fan. His house is covered in their toys. He still gets up at 7 am to watch the latest Sentai show, which annoys his wife. He never really stopped being the otaku he was in college, despite marriage, despite Eva, despite everything. Read Insufficient Direction, a gag manga written by his wife, Moyoco Anno for more on his frankly bizarre home life.

But one of the most interesting bits from that manga was that young Anno starred in a shot by shot fan remake of Return of Ultraman back in the 80s. Unfortunately, I couldn't find a version with subtitles, but considering it's a fanmade VHS rip from 30 years ago...

Anno makes his appearance as Ultraman starting at 18:30. It's a wonder to behold, especially considering he doesn't bother with the helmet.

Yeah, an RPG dating sim, though apparently they did heavily interview Anno and he helped in the development. How much the files actually add to the experience of watching the show is questionable.

The Secret Dead Sea Scrolls are a scripture written by the First Ancestral Race, a manual regarding the Seed of Life (Progenitor Entity) and the usage of the Spear of Longinus security device, possibly while applying a scheme at the time of use to a religious group's own doctrines. They are written prophecy, in so far as they remain active even in the current day according to a design of the past.

Until then, Seele had only fragmentary knowledge of the scrolls' contents and existence, but they had never imagined that the scrolls might actually exist, contain meaningful prophecies, and turn up in near-perfect condition. They were sent to headquarters promptly, upon which the actual truth was skewed and immediately covered up. The parts of little consequence, later released to the public, were called the Dead Sea Scrolls, whereas what Seele made off with were dubbed the Secret Dead Sea Scrolls.

Perhaps a minor thing, but if you've got the Shout Factory Blu-Rays, there's some subtitles missing on the 5th disc (the deleted live action EoE scene)

They'll send you a replacement that's fixed if you fill out the form here: https://www.shoutfactory.com/replacement/neon-genesis-evangelion-the-complete-series
