I make a habit of attending as many performances of local bands as possible. The best part is being able to meet them and talk about their music or any music for that matter. To be able to get varying perspectives on style, equipment, and technique has been very helpful and inspiring. Maybe someday I'll see someone on TV and be able to say "I saw that guy play in a little dive bar back in 2010". How many of you make an effort to do this like me? Other than seeing bands you are acquainted with I mean. Bands that you don't know or haven't heard before. I took guitar lessons from a guy here in Omaha a few years ago. He's been in a few different groups/bands locally. They are currently working on an album via a kickstarter project. You can hear a few of the new singles at the project page. His music is not at all like what I typically listen to. But he has a very blues kind of feel. it's almost a rock, blues, with a country twist. Hard to describe. I used to live in Indianapolis and the Mudkids are totally "right sized" for that city. They are a fantastic, fun live performance and they tour just enough so that they are available when you are in the mood, randomly present enough on the scene that you know them and like them but not so much that you get sick of them, and just rare enough that you can convince a pretty girl that you are "in the know" and "know a super cool local band". They are "right sized" for Indy -- they aren't going anywhere beyond that in a substantial fashion. That said, if any goons are in Indy I'd recommend checking them out. Right now I live in NYC and Orange County. I don't even know where to start with the NYC music scene but live music is always a party. What I love about New York is that it does a great job forcing people to spend time with the man in the mirror and not to coast. Performers who shouldn't be performers burn out quickly enough and I'm not hip enough that any live music venue is going to pretty good. I just don't do a lot of live music because music isn't a big bonding thing with my NYC friends: meaning we don't like the same stuff. But at least there is music everywhere in NYC. You can find some small time band doing something fun. I have NO idea where to start in Orange County. Any suggestions?

Most of my local bands tend to be metal/hardcore related which isn't usually my scene at all, I'm more into my electronic stuff HOWEVERRRRRRRRRRRRR a band that a couple of my friends are in is actually awesome...quote:Ashes of Maybelle are a Coventry based band taking influence from the post hardcore, deathcore, metal and tech scenes to create something visceral, noisy and aggressive. Bit of a mixture from Newcastle in the UK, but there's some real talent around here. I really enjoy going along to open mic nights in Newcastle, some of them are pretty poor but in general there's at least a few people who have the balls to get on the stage and blast out some really nice stuff. There's some great electronic music nights around Newcastle too, including some that have lesser well known or local artists playing a set. The house music scene in Newcastle in particular is pretty great for this. Death to Indie are a pretty great pop-punk outfit that have been knocking about for a few years, they sound a lot better live than they do on their recorded stuff, which I always consider a pretty good thing, in particular for bands like this. I say it#s pop-punk rather than one or the other because as much as they want to be punk their stuff is far too 'radio friendly' for that, and some of their songs are a tad on the repetitive side. The vast majority of his writing is all based on things that have happened to him, in particular with relationships, but there's a lot of material he wrote about his father dying and him losing faith in religion, that kind of thing. He sounds as good live as he does in recording, and there are videos of his live performances dotted about Youtube if you care to look for them, although I think most are filmed on phones and the like. Kid Smpl is a really talented ambient artist from Seattle, I've been to one of his shows. I'm friends with the guys in Geographer in San Francisco. They opened for the Stars during their last tour, which is a higher-profile gig and I'm happy they're getting bigger. Seems there's a lot of Seattle bands here already, why not one more? Thee Emergency is one of my favorite bands lately. they're sort of a Grunge/Motown deal with a certain quality I can't describe but reminds me of ABBA for some reason. They have three albums, Can You Dig It?, Solid, and Cracka Slang. Solid is one of my favorite albums. I haven't head Cracka Slang yet, but it's apparently more psychedelic/country then the previous two. Here's the sad part though, there's almost nothing of them on the internet. The best I can do is this free MP3 of Attack of the Cobrasaurus from KEXP's website.

I used to go see local/regional bands a lot, but the music 'scene' and my social life have changed a lot over the past two years. Currently, the best local band (Columbus, GA) I can think of is SoL. They blew my mind then, and have only gotten better since. Fayetteville, Arkansas's Perpetual Werewolf is legitimately one of the best bands in the world. Unfortunately, the videos of them on youtube are all poor quality, and they have a couple demos but they don't represent the intensity of their sound. So don't judge them based on this stuff though. Fortunately they are recording a full length right now. They play psychedelic hardcore. The closest comparison I could make is probably the screamo band Gospel, but with more hosed up guitar stuff. We've got a lot of different stuff here in Raleigh, but Whatever Brains and Double Negative are my favorite. Both are incredible live bands that have to be seen to really appreciate. Whatever Brains are a weird post punk band I've been watching grow for awhile now. They release a lot of music, constantly add members, and are always playing shows. These folks from Philly just dropped this album and it's mighty fine. It's some very weezery rock and roll, but very high energy. There are a few wonderfully calm and melancholy songs on there too. There's a little bit of everything on here, soaring guitar solos, parts you can scream along to, soulful acoustic closers, jazz breaks to heavy hitting rock songs, it's really a quality piece of work. I recommend Cockroach and Mike's Song to get a good idea of what they sound like. The White Ravens are an Ann Arbor, MI band featuring a brother-sister bass-keyboard duo and a rotating cast of drummers (though I think they've settled on a full time drummer now). They do sort of a whimsical pop thing that I really like. There's a lot of great local stuff in Orlando (and the Florida area in general) right now. Flashlights, in particular. I'm good friends with a lot of the band, but that shouldn't really color my perception of them. They play really great pop-punk. Great people making great music. They recently got signed to Hard Rock's record label and featured on SPIN, which is loving crazy. Some other Orlando/Florida area highlights: -Holly Hunt: Miami sludge metal. They blew me away when I saw them with Earth a few months back. -Wet Nurse: Orlando pop-punk. -Hauzarest: Vicious Orlando hardcore. Think Rohnert Park-era Ceremony. Sadly defunct. -Bastard Deceiver: Tampa crust/grindcore. I think they're defunct, but Sacridose features members of that band.

SPC ECO, I met the singer a while back in a bar gig. I didn't realize at the time that the other guy, the producer used to be in the 90's band Curve. They're a father/daughter shoegaze duo. Now I'm in Champaign, IL, and we have some groups I really like. The Dirty Feathers, who got a mention on NPR as one of the 5 best Bandcamp bands a couple years ago. Think Doors + garage rock. That's No Moon is releasing their second album soon. They call themselves "rocktronica". I really like their energy, especially on "Run", "Megaman", and "In the Light". You may have heard Elsinore's song Yes Yes Yes on TV in a Kohl's ad or on Fox's So You Think You Can Dance? My favorite song of theirs is Lines...I love the break in the middle.

One of my absolute favourite local Melbourne, Australia bands are The Bombay Royale, they're a 10 piece band who play a mix somewhere between 70s Bollywood funk and Surf Rock. They sing almost exclusively in Hindi and are just world class musicians. They dress up as characters as if from a cheesy 70s Bollywood film and basically are insane amounts of fun to see live. Although they got themselves over to England recently for Glastonbury which was so weird seeing clips of since I'm used to tiny packed sweaty rooms in Melbourne inner city suburban bars. There's a lot of good stuff coming out of Vancouver, BC right now. I'll limit my list to bands that I've seen live. Anciients - melodic, progressive metal. Best band in the city right now. Baptists - noisy, metallic hardcore. Unbelievable drumming. Black Wizard - stoner rock. Much better than the name might suggest. Haggatha - crushing doom metal. Hillfolk - "progressive adventure rock." Hoopsnake - sludge doom. Weed. Johnny De Courcy And The Death Rangers - grungy pop-rock, very catchy. The Rock Band Called Time - rock and goddamn roll. Three Wolf Moon - psychedelic rock with folk and prog influences. Weirding - aggressive sludge. Wiser Fool - swingin' stoner rock.

Seattle/Washington Heatwarmer Honestly, one of my favorite bands right now. Prog-rock, but also twee (as much as I dislike that term). Some of the best local musicians, and they are incredible live.
