I make a habit of attending as many performances of local bands as possible. The best part is being able to meet them and talk about their music or any music for that matter. To be able to get varying perspectives on style, equipment, and technique has been very helpful and inspiring.

Maybe someday I'll see someone on TV and be able to say "I saw that guy play in a little dive bar back in 2010".

How many of you make an effort to do this like me? Other than seeing bands you are acquainted with I mean. Bands that you don't know or haven't heard before.

I took guitar lessons from a guy here in Omaha a few years ago. He's been in a few different groups/bands locally. They are currently working on an album via a kickstarter project. You can hear a few of the new singles at the project page. You can also search for Matt Whipkey on Spotify and various other sources.

Matt Whipkey is the guy I think tops my favotire list right now. His music is not at all like what I typically listen to. But he has a very blues kind of feel. it's almost a rock, blues, with a country twist. Hard to describe. He's my favorite because he only really does original stuff. no covers that I have ever heard.

Check it out and let me know what you think. I talk to him occasionally via Facebook and I would be happy to pass along any of your comments or questions.

(FYI - I have his permission to post this)

SO share your favorite local band with us and tell us why they kick rear end.

Technically they're transplants from LA, two of whom were previously living in New York, but they've lived here for the making of more than half their albums at this point so I'm counting them.

When I started listening to that first song, the first thing that came to my mind was "I love rock and roll" - Joan Jett.

I like it.

My favorite band from Seattle right now is Success:

I kind of dig those guys. I wish the videos were better quality but I want to hear more.

I loved Black and Grey and Among Thieves. There are some interesting things going on with the guitars in their music. I'm not a huge scream metal fan. But occasionally I find a few bands that can do it well. I don't hate these guys at all. I would go see them live.

Death to Indie

I see what you mean. They do sound very "commercial" for punk. Probably closer to my taste than I would expect for a punk band though.

Another local band I dig here in Omaha is a band called Quartus. http://www.quartusonline.com/ They are alot closer to "making it big" than any local band I have know.
