Anna poured over the stills sent over by Juliana. This was seriously spooky poo poo, but it was spooky in her pay grade. Probably some weird conicidence or convergent nerd evolution. If it was something more serious, she hoped it was something she wouldn't have to leave the bar for.

She called over one of the bartenders and asked in hushed tones about Sleeping With The Anime.

Moriyuki Ando FP:2

Ando is already quietly buzzing at the prospect of diving into an office filled with shady and possibly illicit information, but something that Madam Juliana said bugs him slightly. He scrolls back through the cascade of abuse Toshiro Tommy has been leaving in his IM history.

quote:

ExoCute81089: Andy whatever shitbag deal you signed with these Kurokami fucks is, it isn't gonna work.

ExoCute81089: I mean the original Nyarlathotekku was the poo poo, man. Seven year run, movies, the whole lot. I mean... I hear it was good. I don't go in for that jap poo poo.

ExoCute81089: But these endless Nyarlathotekku Plus+ spinoffs are selling like poo poo on a biscuit. Probably of the licensing deal to have your dumb idiot face in them.

ExoCute81089: I mean, Miami? Shanghai? Dubai? Worst Tie-In Markets ever. What is this, the loving late twenty-nineties?

ExoCute81089: NTekku Plus is dumb poo poo for poo poo idiot babies.

He picks up the map Juliana found and carefully spreads it out over a nearby dilapidated table. "Miss Ikazuchi, a moment? I'd like to borrow some of your reference material."

Between Naomi's TE copies and the random assortment from the Kurokami Productions backcatalog that Toshiro has been having express couriered to him on a constant, gloating basis, he picks out a few titles to lay over the appropriate parts of the map. Ando's eyes widen.

"This is..."

"...actually, it's probably nothing. Let's just move on. Hey, what's in that office over there?"

Juliana

Juliana can't understand the variables, but she picks up some of the photos. They're idols, ex-majokko, maid/butler cafe workers, basically anyone who could have come into contact with a dumb cosplay outfit at some point or another. Many of them are alive, and leading lives that don't have any connection to this business.

The uncrossed one is a facial ID match for Mizuki Hoshikuma, a Japanese ex-pat with an awesome name attending college in Shanghai.

Naomi

Taking your powers as justification! :buddy:

Naomi feels a faint presence! After some feeling around, she traces it to the rubble of the counter and uncovers the datapad someone was using as a cash register. It's a little beat up, but it's still plugged into the store network.

Anna

Sleeping With The Anime was a pretty chill anime store until it closed about a year ago. It was popular with the majokko community because they stocked a lot of magical girl merch and warned away creeps. The original owner was some regular guy everyone nicknamed Gaijin because he was the first man in his family to leave Japan in generations (it was a hilarious nickname, okay). Eventually Gaijin sold the place to take a sweeter corporate gig in Neo-Tokyo, and it was taken over by another guy.

The other guy was a huge dork with some odd mannerisms (like hiring a retired maj to help turf creeps out because "tsunderes are great at that"), but he was friendly enough so everyone took to calling him Otaku. Otaku eventually closed up shop a couple years later and gave everyone generous severance packages because his favourite series finally ended, or something.

Juliana FP: 2
Lingering Complications - Compel

Portraits rapidly cycled in the corner of Juliana's field of vision as positive match after match was returned on her queries. "Well the good news is that whoever put all this up may be unhinged but they don't seem to be homicidal," she said, relaxing as she scrolled through a cascade of AR windows. "The hits I'm getting are mostly all still alive, a few deaths here and there but nothing that suggests any sort of serial killer activity or ritualistic murder. I've got former magical girls, pop idols, service industry employees...the only connection I'm seeing between any of them is an affinity for playing dress-up. I've also got a hit on our lucky number 814, her name's Mizuki Hoshikuma, Japanese national currently attending college in Shanghai."

Well that explained what she was looking at (sort of) but not why she was looking at it. The scrawls and equations written across the wall similarly eluded her. Were they looking at some stalker's secret project? Stalkers usually fixated on a single person though, they didn't generally start a collection...and why were all but Mizuki Hoshikuma's pictures crossed out? She was glad that it didn't appear any of them were in danger because of it, but it still left her with more questions than answers.

"I'd rather deal with bloody ghosts after all," she muttered, shaking her head she she stepped out of the back room, brow furrowed in thought...then she stopped in her tracks as she saw where Ando had spread out the map she'd found along with several volumes of that comic.

No wait, that wasn't quite right, they were from different comics, all from different series'. She picked up the most familiar one, sporting an eerily striking illustration of Ando (complete with purloined mustache) on the cover, then looked down at the map once more. "Miami," she said to no one in particular, setting the book down near the red question mark on the map. "Shanghai," she went on, doing the same with the corresponding volume. Briefly thumbing through the third book revealed that it had been set in Dubai, her eyes widening with realization as she placed it down...right next to where it too had been marked on the map.

"These are hotspots," she said, a note of excitement in her voice as she beckoned the others over. "Look! Miami, Shanghai, Dubai...all of them marked on this map, and all of them corresponding to the setting of one of these comics. If the other comics are anything like ours then these are all based on real people, probably other people that have gotten mixed up with Shuizn somehow. That's got to be the connection, it's too coincidental otherwise. But that means...there are over a dozen other places marked here besides those three. Naomi, these are yours? Are there any other series' under this name that you know of?"

Naomi Ikazuchi - FP: 4

"Oh, there you are."

Naomi is a bit too distracted with the ping of electronic life to reply to Juliana at the moment. She pulls out the datapad from the counter and delicately brushes the dust away with a sweep of her hand. As the touchscreen device glows back to life, the cracks on the screen almost form into a small frown. The sight of neglected and perfectly serviceable devices makes her frown as well.

"How long have you been down here? You poor thing." She cradles the datapad, with as much care as owner would to her pet. This goes on for much longer than it should. "Yes, yes. We'll find you a new home, Datapad-san. I need you to do me a favor, though. While I understand you're still in shock, right now..."

She holds up the datapad, charging it up with an electric charge from her hand.

"I need you to help me break in your network."

A pause. She scrolls up a bit, back to Hiro's entry. Sure enough, Seattle again.

Thank god for VidTropes, though. How else would she able to keep up with all the anime she's cosplaying from?

"So... I believe this answers your question, Miss Morgan." Naomi tosses the AR data on the others (the hacked datapad for Moriyuki's sake), inflicting them with tropes. "This is your ground zero. nTech classic, if you will. Though aside from the Outsider stuff, sounds like your Shuizn, I don't really know what these have to do with the other manga continuity-wise. I guess there's an electric parapsychic there like me, but that's all I see, I don't know."

She mulls for a few seconds, then adds. "Alright, I read Transeldritch a while ago, right up to the current issue. That was kinda creepy, watching myself take Santore-san's place and not realizing it. Let's assume that this is the same phenomenon that happened... is happening?... in Nyarlathotekku. Because if so, there's someone in Seattle who fought some deadpan snarker anti-hero and knows Shiuzn better than we do."

Naomi nods to herself, smiling. "There might be more to find in these files... but for now, I'm tapping on reliable contacts to find out who this 'Akuma' is."

Juliana FP: 2
Lingering Complications - Compel

Juliana looked over the text that Anna had sent her...so two previous owners, neither of which had merited a proper name, both of whom left for reasons which apparently weren't suspicious enough to be noteworthy. Well it was better than nothing she supposed, and at least it confirmed that they hadn't inadvertently stumbled upon some anime-obsessed serial killer's den. Though it still didn't explain the back room, or what the connection between this store and the one in Miami was. Following the money trail wasn't a bad suggestion assuming they could find where it began.

She opened the files that Naomi sent her way, quietly impressed that she'd managed to unearth a functional datapad hidden away within the rundown shop...then she paused and read back over the first page before stopping and going back over it a third time with no better luck than she'd had the during the first two attempts. "What in the world am I reading?," she asked, completely lost. "Who actually writes like this?"

Most of it looked like nonsense, probably was nonsense actually, but she was able to follow along enough to keep up with Naomi's theory. "So this is where it all started, then. Well that's suspiciously convenient but as long as we're stuck here I suppose we owe it to ourselves to look into it. Ando's suggestion has merit too," Juliana said, inclining her head towards the businessman, "but for now Seattle's closer. It'd be nice if this...whatever this is gave us a bit more to go on." Privately she had her doubts about Naomi's "reliable contacts" but then again she had gotten them this much to go on.

She then braced herself as Shiro placed another call to Sully, asking him to use the dial again. After the previous day's events she didn't trust that thing in the slightest (and consequently had even more questions for him once they were back in Miami) but she at least trusted the other woman not to do anything reckless with it.

Six names on the list, five protagonists and one primary antagonist in the first one of these comics. The names didn't match, though the number and nationality did, and everything was coming up Seattle lately so it was worth a shot at least.

"Hold on," she said, "let me try something. Shiro thought about what Storms had said. "We need a chance to research without any distractions. That means no explosions, no duels with rivals, and no magic. And we have ways of getting around those, thanks to Juliana and Naomi."

<Hey, I know why it hits Storms extra hard.> Ueru piped up. <It's because it's funny!>

Shiro raised an eyebrow.

<No, seriously, hear me out. Comedy is all about exaggeration. Storms overreacts to everything anyway, it's part of being an Agressively Normal American. Sure he likes his guns a little too much but he's the only one in your group who isn't magic, a robot, or both.>

"That's... true."

<It's the same reason it hits me and Kelly so hard. We're not the main characters, and supporting cast is always good for a laugh. Storms is a main character, but SHUIZN's decided he's comic relief.>

"Ouch. So what am I then?"

Ueru thought about it. <You're the loner on a personal mission.> he decided. <Ugh... That's the guy who always gets killed.>

Shiro winced.

"Anyway..." she said, trying to get back to the issue at hand. "I don't think it's taken effect yet. There's something special about this shop. SHUIZN isn't here. I think it might be a sort of blind spot. We really should use this place as HQ."

Most of the building is intact, so it's not too hard to clear some room for a temporary HQ. There's a staff exit in the back you can sneak in and out of, and you can cover up the front windows and doors to keep people noticing the building is occupied. Some of the shelves have to become load-bearing shelves and there's a nonzero chance some of the power outlets will start a fire, but Storms is pretty sure he can sign off on this sweet deal.

You create Mangahaus with two invokes.

Nyarlathotekku Classic

As far as you can tell, those six people are the comic's characters with less awesome names, and the original comic might be embellishing real events a bit.

They all lived in Inubukuro, a neighborhood next to the Neo-Tokyo Arcology. (The comic uses a different, fictional name.) News articles from the time about "gang violence" and "tragic accidents" suggest their adventures happened shortly before the actual series, so by the time Nyarlathotekku became popular most of them weren't around to see it.

Here's what you can tell:

Takumi Itou is Hiro Akakami, the comic's protagonist. Like in the comic, he lived near the Obama Arcology before moving to Neo-Tokyo, and he got into fights with gangs in both places - the perfect cover for beating up bad guys! Whether he actually had an ancient woodblock printing that grants wuxia powers is unclear. As in the comic, Takumi hasn't been seen since he left Inubukuro. Any remaining members of his family moved out of Seattle long ago.

Haruna Maki is Maki Akagi, the deuteragonist who loses an arm and gets a sweet robot one. Haruna is still alive, and according to your search she's a popular gadget/gaming vlogger who lives in Shanghai but travels a lot.

Kira Tanaka is Kaijari Suigyomatsu, the lucky kid with the sweet-rear end name who gets beheaded by a shinigami "Death Angel" in the comic. In real life he was stabbed with a sword and bled out, and it was blamed on gangs.

Shou Watanabe is Taro Gennai, who got exploding magic crystal fragments in the brain and turned into a helpful ghost until his comatose body was smothered with a pillow by his mom - except in real life, where they just turned off his life support. Still dead though.

Aoi Kobayashi is Kuzaki Tsuchikuchi. In the comic, she's mission control until the evil Yotsumaru Heavy Industries turns her into a para-psychic; in real life she is listed as a patient of the totally unrelated Sarugami Innovations, who disappeared years ago after losing their CEO in an "accident", being investigated by the OOI, and having the remnants absorbed by former ally Wukong Corporation. Aoi seems to be alive, but has no publicly listed permanent residence.

Shinji Takaya is Akuma, the villain. In the comics Akuma gets his powers from a dude called the Outsider who sounds kind of like Shuizn, but eventually he reforms and moves to Seattle. In fact, he's still here! The apartment block listed as his residence was firebombed in a terrorist attack by some snake-themed cultists a few weeks ago though.

Shiro knows "Death Angel" is comic-speak for Shinigami. In the comics, the group were framed for the murder of a shinigami by Akuma and some shinigami captain who was later killed by his lieutenant when the deception was uncovered—a lieutenant whose abilities and appearance look suspiciously similar to Furezu Mawaru. Also, the creepy trope page suggests Haruna is either a shinigami ally or has some favours owed.

"We picking Anna up on the way over or just subcontracting out our investigation to her at this point? Quite honestly I could do without the drama."

Moriyuki Ando FP:2

Moriyuki returns from the front of the store, where he has been carefully cataloguing and reorganising the store's remaining inventory. Sure, alphabetical's okay, I guess, but have you ever considered leveraging Markov chains and the work of Ludwig Wittgenstein to create a reactive network of cross-associations between titles that dynamically adapts to content and context?

ExoCute has. In some territories a bookshelf casually arranged by an ExoCute executive is considered a sentient being with full voting rights.

"We desire the drama, in our circumstances. We're dealing with a narrative construct, any reduction in our cohort is likely to leave us open to an early defeat and a long interval chapter where we are forced to rediscover the power of teamwork. It is best to just nip that in the bud early and pick Miss Asagiri up on the way."

"Besides which, she is an integral part of our operation. We would do well to maintain the full compliment of our original party that brought us together in the face of narrative tension..." he nods at Naomi, "...sudden Shuiznate substitutions notwithstanding."

"We should probably at least make sure she's all right, regenerative powers not withstanding," Juliana said, nodding at Ando. "Even if this place is somehow warded against Shuzin the rest of the city isn't and we did just change the dial."

She thought about that for a moment. "On the other hand, maybe we shouldn't tell her we did that."

Naomi Ikazuchi - FP: 4 -> 3

Naomi pockets the datapad and waves off ExoCute again. "Again, I'm here until I can clear Miss Murazaki's name. Anything I happen to do here is part of that goal and not at all whatsoever because I'm morbidly curious why my face is in a manga and why Hakurei seems oddly unaware of some Outsider entity that's supposedly rewriting reality."

She does a good job convincing herself of that. Naomi just really doesn't want to sign Moriyuki's contract. Totally indignant over that salaryman jerk.

"I'm going to help find Takaya." She shrugs. "Going by my luck today, I might end up running into him while he summons Shiuzn or something. That would be narratively convenient."

Shiro FP:2

Shiro kicked off the counter and headed for the door. Something about Naomi's insistence on clearing her name made her want to smile. Of all of them, Shiro was the least concerned about mortal authorities, and even the OOI didn't particularly phase her. Being on a wanted list was an inconvenience. Still, she did appreciate the assistance.

"Akuma is our best lead for now. Let's go to the scene of the fire, we'll get Anna on the way. Hopefully alcohol is all she's got in her."

<You should get back in touch with Furezu.> Ueru said. <If she was involved in the original incident, she might know something.>

Shiro was already on it.

TO: Furezu.Mawaru(AT)shinigami.dl posted:

Sorry to bother you again so soon, Furezu-San but we've been doing some digging on the original N-Tech manga, which may have been where this all started. It took place several years back in Neo-Tokyo, and several of the real life equivalents to the manga characters have moved to or through Seattle at some point.

There was an incident involving the murder of a shinigami and a man-hunt for a boy thought to be responsible. From what I can tell you were involved in that investigation and it led to the death of your superior officer. I would like to ask a few questions about it, when you have time.

Anna A.
FP: 1/1
Aspect: Drunk as a Skunk

Anna, to her credit, did not freak out at the changing of the dial setting again. Granted, this was because she was too drunk to remember her own name, but small victories. The soft, warm vibrations of slice-of-life made her sleepy, but that was about it. She passed out into her fourth or fortieth drink, content for once.

Moriyuki Ando FP:2

"I concur with Madam Juliana. I too have been, err... present during the calling of creatures beyond the mortal ken and... well actually it all worked out fine. There were no conceivable consequences whatsoever. One wouldn't, of course, recommend it... but then one wouldn't not recommend it. Legal liability and all that."

Ando primly slides onto the least-stained seat he can find and fumbles around for a seatbelt.

"What were we discussing, once again? Investigating the site of the fire, yes. Let's be off then."

Naomi Ikazuchi - FP: 3

On the way out, Naomi posts in VidTropes again!

"Well, if we're going to assume that some Outsider is turning our world into a manga, we may as well make use of the convention." She answers Juliana with a shrug. "Always assume that we'll be somewhere or with someone in the nick of time. I'm sure that's a trope, as well."

She sits next to Moriyuki at the car. After a moment to recollect the tissue paper contact, she decides to palm Datapad-kun into his hands. "Here. You may as well get started with the 22nd century."

Aspects: Abandoned Wreck

This place isn't that bad - it's mostly superficially burned out, with most of the utilities kinda sorta intact. Some parts of it are still habitable. But this place sets itself apart on an otherwise boring street by its rad facade, so the place is shut down until they fix it. You have the run of the place.

Kind of dark in here.

This is hard, but here goes.

I know who you mean. Kira Tanaka. He was framed for the murder of one of our diplomats. I'm not proud of this, but I carried out the sentence.

It seemed like an open and shut case at the time. His residue was on the body, divinations pointed to him, everything. I did not realise it was a setup at the time.

My superior was Captain Kozukahara. He was very old and had trouble adjusting. The investigation found he was working with a man named Shinji Takaya. Takaya convinced him the modern world was sick and there was no point to saving it. I am told he was very persuasive.

Kozukahara-san was eventually forced to try and silence the group directly, but he was goaded into admitting guilt during the fight. I was forced to cut him down before he expected a counter attack.

We never found the culprit, but I still have some files I can fetch. Ask anything you like. I will talk to you soon. I'm sorry for my part in this.

Their first stop was a downtown bar where GPS had pinged Anna's phone. Once there they found the girl passed out in her seat, surrounded by a collection of shot glasses and bottles, an incongruously peaceful look on her face. Juliana rolled her eyes but didn't have the heart to wake her, even when it turned out that the bartender was expecting one of them to cover the tab. She blamed the dial.

After settling things at the bar and carrying the unconscious magical girl out to the van, their next stop was the address she'd found for Shinji Takaya's apartment. It was easy enough to tell when they'd arrived at the burned-out building...whoever had done this had known who they were aiming for, obviously, but based on the article not mentioning any deaths it didn't seem like they'd stuck around to make sure the job was finished. More amateurs? Or possibly a warning of some kind?

Thankfully Storms had been as productive as ever while he was out and she helped herself to a handgun before stepping out of the van and heading for the ruined building. Local fire departments and CSI had doubtlessly combed the place over already, but they also hadn't been looking for what they were looking for. She carefully stepped through the doorway, mindful not to cause the damaged structure to collapse any further, and slowly looked around, a few lingering error messages from her earlier shutdown popping up as she cycled through various sensor modes.

Gonna look around with Juliana's enhanced senses, thermal, ultrasound, and x-ray vision, see if anything stands out.

A lot stands out!

The first thing Juliana notices is that this place is occupied. A few floors up, in an apartment with a half-missing floor, some guy is blatantly sitting at his computer and drinking some kind of hot drink. The utilities definitely still work there.

The second thing she notices is that every conceivable path there has been rigged. There are trip wires connected to rocks, collapsed floors propped up to look safe, webcams taped to the walls, suspiciously precarious debris, jury-rigged motion detectors, nets... nothing harmful, but anyone who wanders in carelessly is guaranteed to set something off that makes a ton of noise and maybe also slows them down too.

The mélange of makeshift surveillance extends from a few floors above the apartment all the way to the basement. When Juliana peers down there, she can see another body. This one's not as warm though...

Okay, so someone has rigged up a CHALLENGE for you. Here's what you need to overcome quietly:

Electronic surveillance: Good (+3)
Mechanical noise traps: Great (+4)
Finding a way through the ruin in the first place: Good (+3)

:siren: Optional: Getting past the traps to the basement: Great (+4)

"Oh, look at-"

Naomi pauses, realizing she should probably keep her voice down. Instead, she pulls out her databook and gestures everyone to get on chat for a moment.

pre:
HakuRaichu: I get the feeling we're not welcome here. Let's stay quiet for a minute
and try to get some element of surprise.
HakuRaichu: I can sense a lot of cameras running all over this place, gonna see if
I can disable them from here. Can you guys handle the rest?
HakuRaichu: BTW, is this part of your dial business? I'm sure this DOESN'T count as
            Slice of Life.
She kneels down to the ground, feeling out one of the exposed wires connecting to the whole webcam network. Focusing her mind on the wire, she starts to probe into this guy's security system and subvert it for her own use.

Overcoming the electrical system with computer powers: -//+ +5 = 5.
