The news media had said probably not. The officer was sitting in his car, the two must have saw him, freaked out, and they pretty much ambushed him in his car.

That is what has been reported. I am skeptical. The reason I am skeptical is because of this picture of the crime scene outside the Stata Center at MIT taken from a window shortly after the murder. Note the blood on the ground. Linked because blood. http://i.imgur.com/UBhGwvF.jpg

This is a fair distance in from any road. It's definitely not anyplace near where MIT Campus Police would just be idly sitting in any normal circumstances.

So who pays for everything? I mean, I understand taxpayers are paying for the police force and whatnot, but what about the military helicopters that were brought in? Can any of it be charged back to the suspects or their family?

The main reason I ask is that I had a former coworker who ran from the police when he was pulled over for speeding while on probation. After, when he was in court, they ordered him to pay for the fuel that was used in the chopper that was in pursuit. He also said that the chopper wasn't dispatched for him, but someone else and that the chopper was returning to the heliport before getting the call to follow him.

Now that I type that out, that seems like a bunch of bullshit...

there's basically no benefit to restricting it and it causes a lot of people a lot of hassle. no reason to restrict it.

This is really a simple problem to fix...put age restrictions on pressure cookers like states did with spray paint. It'll be just as effective.

Neither of these guys tripped any red flags, ever except maybe the older one in one instance. Chances are they would have bought just as much explosive, done their deed and we'd know about them and capture them in roughly the same time frame.
These constant bandages of "Well it did something bad once out of the thousands of times per year it's used so we need to ban/regulate the gently caress out of it" really does nothing.

What was the cost estimate of shutting down the city on a work day? I saw $333,000,000. I don't think it's worth trying to recoup that.

I don't think he had much money to really cover that and the family in the US are siblings and the Aunt/Uncles, I can't see them being made to pay for it.

Why bother? It's not like we're all going to get a bill specifically for this event. All those departments have operating budgets and they've probably got access to the big ol' pot of homeland security funding for things like this.

All the local businesses that got shut down, I'd be a lot more worried about how those folks get taken care of, if they do. They'll probably end up just having to eat the losses for the day.

Speaking of "eating the losses." It's unfortunate that insurance doesn't cover loss of food in acts of terrorism. There's literally thousands of dollars of spoiled food sitting out in restaurants on Boylston since Monday on tables and in the kitchens. Sad, but there will probably be ways to recover the losses.

Yeah, it's all speculation but this seems very likely. It really looks like these guys never considered what would happen after they did this (or even that they might get caught), given that they had no apparent escape plan and how quickly everything went to poo poo once their pictures were passed out by the FBI. Panic seems like a strong possibility.

But who knows at this point?

Judging by their arsenal of guns and grenades I'm guessing their "escape plan" was to go down in some stupid martyr blaze of glory. Only one of them accomplished it though

I don't know if any of these are his car. If one of them is it means he was, for some reason, driving on the walkways of campus (MIT CP usually are not). If they are not, it means he was out of his car, and then the story changes.

Buy a scanner, they're fun! Make sure the one you get is compatible with whatever your local PD uses though. If your department hasn't upgraded to a trunked system then a cheap, old scanner would work fine.

Can someone fill me in on the details of how they got him out of the boat? When I was on here yesterday they threw a bunch of flashbangs at him, were preparing to get a K9 unit on him, and lining officers up to one side in case they wanted to fire at him. At that point I had to go to dinner. Next I read he was in the hospital.

MGH reporting only ten bombing victims still in house with five listed in fair condition and five listed in good condition. Excellent news and similar to what other hospitals have said. Still a few in critical condition (60 yo M at BMC, one at BI just now opening his eyes, two at Children's expected to survive, four last listed at Brigham, etc).

As someone related to a member of the MIT police force and as an employee of MIT in a nearby building, I can say with 100% confidence it is never unusual to see an MIT cruiser idling on Vassar, Amherst or Mass Ave at any time of day. They are constantly moving through the area on foot, bicycle and car.

Pair this with the multitude of bomb threats and suspicious packages found in the area and it is no surprise MIT police would be on the lookout
