I listened to the scanner and read the news and the thread all day today. How is it that I only just now learned that black hat had a wife and daughter? Seems like that would have come up more

I'm guessing it's the woman with him in the pictures of the boxing gym? I didn't catch that either.

e: trying to find cached link to boxing gym photos. The original link was taken down.

It's nice to see that those sites are being brought to task. Then you have poo poo like this :

Good god, this article. If you scroll down the author replies to the criticism in his comments:

"Doesn't Reddit have a value as a clearinghouse for the dumb and useless stuff?"

How were they a clearinghouse again? They found "dumb and useless stuff" and then sent it to the FBI...

"What's more, might there be a value in knowing that your name/details are being kicked around versus the prospect that they're in some secret file somewhere as a result of an anonymous tip?"

I guess there's some comfort in knowing, as you're beat to death by a lynch mob, that Reddit helped you see it coming.

"It's crazy to expect that people would look at those pictures and details and not want to speculate on them. Given that, isn't it more reasonable to want to foster a more or less responsible forum for those discussions, rather than to try to will the discussion away (and as a result leave it to less responsible forums)?"

The Alex Jone's folks haven't given up on Sunil either. They're still pushing that he was involved.

Do you have any links for this? I tried looking on Prison Planet, but the forums there have the worst design I have ever seen.

I was going to try to save the burning of your eyes by trying to quote the specific couple of sentences, but in typical infowars fashion you can't. They heap unrelated coincidence on unrelated coincidence to try to build a "wider" conspiracy thing.

The narrative on Sunil is basically "Sunil was named as a suspect. This was retracted. The FBI also worked his missing persons case. CONSPIRACY!"

The article is dated the 20th. He gets a lot more mentions in the comments. They are not gonna leave this guy's family alone.

For a site that claims to want to spread the truth as much as possible, they sure as gently caress don't want anyone to read it. Who the hell does their site design?

Sunil is one of the many sad stories to come out of the whole Redit/4chan debacle. If you look at the "Sunny is missing" pages you quickly figure out he was a good guy. If you read the posts from his friends/family you quickly grow to like them. The fact that they may now have to endure shouts of "BILDERBERG!" at his funeral is pretty loving lovely. Also, I found the infowars article because I've been googling Sunil's name everyday for updates. If friends or family do this, they will see this/these articles as well.

Woah. Haven't seen that yet. I'm assuming this was from all the "your downlink is being broadcast on the internet" stuff we heard on the scanner?

Yeah I think the main distinction between the two was that SA people were scanning the pictures and talking about them for their own amusement whereas reddit was actively seeking out and contacting authorities with their every lead.

That and Reddit/4chan folks further detected some of their FB/Twitter accounts and harassed them there as well. I hit one of the FB links and the guy had left his profile public. It exploded with accusations. He's a 17 year old high school student. Felt really bad for him.

What is it with people believing in conspiracy theory bullshit about nearly every significant event latley? Hell even the loving school shooting in Newtown had people swearing it was all a bunch of actors. I know this kind of thing has always been around but it seems more popular latley.

Money. After "Loose Change" it became a fairly lucrative industry.

quote:

Conspiracy theories have probably been around for centuries, but it's only recently that the dissemination of the unverifiable has become an industry unto itself. While publicizing secrets to expose corruption and hypocrisy is a laudable goal, some conspiracy theorists don't seem all that concerned with the veracity of what they claim. If their fanciful theories and loaded questions can translate into money, all the better.

Alex Jones net worth is estimated to be around 5 mill.

Once it became lucrative, the need for more conspiracies explains itself. As to why people believe them, I really can't say beyond once real money began to drive them they became much easier to find.
