So my current snare is a 14x5.5 with an Evans Calftone and low tuning but I'm thinking about getting another snare to try and get this kind of sound https://track5.mixtape.moe/zbmmmy.mp3. Looking around on the local classifieds I have a few options in the $200-$300 range. What would be the best choice from these options to get close to that sound? Recommendations on heads/tuning would be great too. - Taye 14x7 - Gretsch Catalina Club 13x7 - Yamaha Musashi 13x6.5 - Pearl 12x7 New New Fresh fucked around with this message at 05:03 on Jun 25, 2017 |

Ooh that snare really does sound good. Thanks for the recommendations!

Oh yeah I should mention I ended up getting the big Taye 14x7. The thing is really sensitive and it can handle high tuning well, so it's a pretty solid contrast to my other snare. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsrlLstjGYA

That kit would probably be the way to go, usually you have to get a 4 piece and add another floor tom or get a 6 piece and take off a rack.

Just to be sure, you're keeping the other head from resonating while you do this right?

Big kick boi reporting in, my 24x14 is just hanging out until I get the new wrap on it.

Best thing I'd suggest is to move your ride forward and put the second floor so it's more like it's to the right of the first floor rather than behind it. Never tried it with sizes that big but it worked with a 14"/16" pair.

It took me this long to notice but that's from the music video for The Colour Out of Space isn't it

Hey I remember you from the jazz shitpost chat Maybe try watching some of those blacksmithing videos on YouTube, you could probably get a clean sound from there and EQ it a bit.

My guess would be Tama Rockstar just based on the double ended lugs. As for wrapping, I did my vintage Imperialstar about a year ago and I pretty much just got it done over a weekend. The most time consuming part was scraping the old glue off so that the new wrap would sit properly without gaps. It cost me about $300 CAD for a set of wraps to go on my kit (13x9, 16x16, 24x14) but I was able to just pick it up from the guy so I didn't have to pay for shipping. I pretty much went by these two videos as rewrapping tutorials: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OgD2ZlVPjys https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MOwJyI0UjE

I started with 1/1, went to 2/2, my main kit right now is 1/2 and I mostly play jazz so y'know no rules for drumming and all that

Earlier this year I had a gig to fly to on the other side of the continent and because I'm stubborn I decided to build a four piece kit that I could take with me. It's a 10x8 rack, 13x9 floor, and 16x10 kick with a 14x5.5 snare all fitting together in a 16x16 floor tom case. Between this, a bag of lightweight hardware, and a cymbal bag, it's possible to be your own roadie and take everything in one trip (if you don't mind hauling 100 lbs).

I have a vintage speed king I got from a local drum shop. The best part of it and the reason I got it is that it can disassemble into something relatively flat really easily without tools. I'm sure there's better pedals I could've got for $100 but the thing looks cool at least

AndrewP posted:A month in and my Dyna Sync pedal is still amazing. It can do anything. Super fast doubles, plenty of power, this thing is just perfect. I recommend it for anyone looking at new kick pedals. I actually am kinda considering it since my speed king is getting pretty squeaky, but drat that's some money. I was thinking my big gear purchase for the year was gonna be the Istanbul clap stack.

Ok I caved and picked up a dyna sync pedal today and WOW doubles are so easy now I think the long footboard is the biggest factor, I actually couldn't do heel toe properly with my size 11 feet on my old pedal. The difference is pretty stark:

I've bought snare drums from overseas, with a full kit it'll be either you or the shipper eating a ton of shipping fees at which point you might as well buy a new kit locally.

I use the massdrop plus IEMs, any one of the Shure earphones would probably give you the same experience. With a good fit it should isolate enough that you aren't destroying your hearing or having to turn the music way up but still letting a little bit through so you can hear yourself play.

I Might Be Adam posted:Anyone have any recs for drum mics? I know that I can just buy a budget mic kit for ~$100 but I feel like I'm gonna get stuff I won't use or something that's better suited for live setups. I'd like to mic up my small kit for just messing around so just kick, rack, floor, snare, and maybe a couple overheads? I already have an sm57. Would rather get quality over quantity of mics. I used a pair of Rode NT1-A for several years because my local music store had them at their biannual used gear clearance, they're pretty good if a little bright. They're common enough that you should be able to find em for a good price on your local classifieds. Same with the Shure Beta 52 I have on my kick, that was a clearance purchase. As for my snare mic it's one of those $20 knockoff SM57s and I haven't gotten any complaints about it from my mixer so it's probably good enough. Past that you don't really need anything unless you wanna get really granular with tweaking your sound. Money spent on tom mics and the time spent making sure everything is in phase would be better spent on room treatment imo.

I Might Be Adam posted:Room treatment is something else I’ve thought about. I don’t have budget for acoustic panels and I’m renting this house so I’m looking into other ways. There’s not much in this room right so need to get something in here to absorb all this bouncing sound. It's kinda expensive but I used one of these with their sound blanket behind the kit to make there be one less hard surface when I was at my buddy's place for a bit last year. https://vocalboothtogo.com/product/voice-over-flextee-stand/ https://vocalboothtogo.com/product/sound-blanket-producers-choice-with-grommets-solid-black/ Found out about em from rdavidr, his video shows a more permanent installation but basically they'll deaden the room a good amount and with an air gap will prevent some leakage outside the room too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jMs1Z_K8cR8 I got lucky that they happened to have a b-stock stand at the time I was looking. A slightly different solution I'm trying for my home studio is to use just a bunch of decently thick curtains to do the same thing but I haven't gotten around to putting them up yet.

My combined home office/studio/workshop in the corner of an unfinished basement. Having the exposed joists above is actually pretty handy for mounting things to the ceiling, I picked up a gopro a couple months ago to record performance video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hCVxsmW6nXY
