I didn't read the thread BUT...

I had to call the paramedics for a medical emergency and they always bring the police with them. One of the cops notices I have a lot of hard drives, and if I recall actually mentions I do as well. Is it possible he can kick off an investigation for filez? Not quite sure how these types of things work law wise. I've always been curious. I don't posses anything ridiculous, mostly what any other regular person has, but I always wonder how far the law can stretch with a situation of this kind.

I'm pretty sure a cop won't really care if you're downloading filez. People usually get in trouble because the copyright holder figures out they were downloading, then sues them. Also, it's not like having a lot of hard drives is criminal or grants any sort of reasonable suspicion. There are plenty of legitimate reasons you could have a lot of drives.

Are you sure he wasn't just trying to have a conversation?

All I wanted to do was tell women how to be feminists and compliment them on their great tits.

Then those self righteous shits called me white >:|

Now all I can hope is that this picture of a smiling xbox with awesome tits will console me.

Unless your schlong is unusually long you're unlikely to "pound" your own rear end in prison. Not that you'd have to, I'm informed that the criminal justice system is very lax in protecting prisoners from surprise sex there due to the idea of prison as "punishment" rather than "rehabilitation" being more prominent.

And a beat cop ain't gonna go after you for copyright infringement, its a waste of their time, most like.

You're gonna be fine. If he went to the detectives and said "Hey, this guy I saw on a medical last night had TONS of hard drives, we should totally investigate" he would get laughed the gently caress out of the office. For him to start any kind of investigation, he'd need probable cause.

Don't touch

Posting on a public forum that you're worried about being investigated for having copyrighted material which you obtained illegally is probably something you should be more worried about than a cop seeing a bunch of hard drives. One says you're actually guilty, the other is just a bunch of hard drives. Good work, now you are really going to get it!

How many hard drives do you have?

There's insufficient evidence to establish probable cause but if the cop thought anything suspicious, I suspect they'd assume child porn long before files. People who collect cp tend to collect a <lot>, it's rare to find only a few images and many hard drives can act as a warning flag to people who investigate this kind of stuff. Again, this isn't sufficient probable cause, though

I'm pretty sure copyright infringement is a civil, not a criminal matter anyway but don't quote me on that. My understanding is that it's not the job of the police to protect people's copyrights but the US does a lot of dumb poo poo with respect to intellectual property so I wouldn't be surprised if in wrong

That is in fact a civil matter, not criminal. OP, unless you're a child pornography fiend or international hacker the police literally do not care. Of course, OP is probably a child pornography fiend so....

What are you doing that'd merit a prison sentence if you got caught? I'd probably destroy those hard drives if I were you.

My first thought was that you were worried about being suspected of child pornography. Maybe it's just because I don't pay attention to filez busts anymore unless they're major news (like, catching the ringleader of file-sharing networks), but every time "mountains of hard drives" are mentioned in a newsworthy way, it seems like it's almost always followed by the phrase "of child pornography" instead of "copyrighted material".

But yeah, your coming onto a forum worried about them investigating you for files is probably worse than a cop just casually saying "Whoa that's a lot of hard drives, NERD!"

So, how much child pornography do you have?

I'd wager it's a lot.

Was the child pornography oozing out the sides of the hard drives? I think you and I both know the answer. It may be in your best interest to stick your hard drive collection into an MRI on your next trip to the hospital.

Thou bootless clapper-clawed varlot!

As mentioned, he needs probable cause. Lots of hard drives means you do lots of computer stuff. It could mean absolutely anything. If a cop were to ask, just say "bitcoins." It's not like you're ripping dvd's to sell, and you have all the bootleg covers/cases in plain sight.

Bull. He has CP, and the cop knows it. You're going to prison, pal.

I mean, why else would he make an off the cuff comment? Clearly, cops don't ever make small talk.
