HiveCommander posted:We know he isn't made of plot armour after the Shokugeki against the teacher so it's not impossible for him to lose here. While true, this doesn't feel like a "protagonist loses" fight. It's in the middle of a tournament and it's far too relaxed. I can tell from the panels and having read quite a few shounen in my time.

Oh god. His gross combinations haven't been mentioned/referenced in forever and I'm really starting to think you're right about this

Souma loses sometimes, but not in the first stage of a tournament arc. He might lose later on, but there is no point in even having a tournament if the mc barely participates. As rad as it might be if the rest of the arc was about Megumi going through the tournament after Souma loses, that ain't happening.

Souma needs a massive victory if he really wants to get the ball rolling on his plan to be number one too.

I can only hope the beginning of the next chapter has everyone's shocked reactions as the director strips again only to reveal that it's because he threw up on his robe and needs to change. Then we're treated to a beautifully drawn picture of a pressed licorice sheet sitting on top of skittle rice.

Erina will stop being a bitch the instant they finally get around to having her find out that Souma's father is the person who inspired her and have the big sobfest over it.

Yeah, but he didn't get kicked out of the entire tournament for him. Souma loses sometimes, but starting a huge tournament arc and then having the main character lose in the first official round would be kind of... unique. Though I am all for more Megumi!

Fixed that for you. Don't you love it when stock characters get a glimpse of self-awareness or development and then immediately revert back to their standard?

Erina will never stop being a bitch. Souma will just continue to add to his harem. Once he gives Erina another foodgasm and makes her say his food is good he'll forget about her.

Fabricated posted:Yeah but while this series is shockingly not as shameful about the harem as other series despite the naked-full-body-food-orgasms Souma is still basically collecting a harem and the mean-ol female antagonist being defeated and joining it is pretty much a staple of this stuff. Then they'll inevitably conjure some even bigger antagonist (prolly a dude) from nowhere. You're suggesting "it's shonen so the sour antagonist becomes part of the hero's troupe to make way for the even more sour antagonist"; I'm suggesting "it's harem so the stock tsundere first girl wins but anything positive to be gained from the development is temporary at best". Either way it's about as disappointing as the whole love-interest deal from Bakuman.

I'd like to think the manga is doing a better job than that, at least so far it's been very entertaining and the romance stuff has all been sidelined in favour of more cook-offs. I mean, sure, it could totally fall into the same old clichés that dozens of other series have already beaten us over the head with, but I guess I'm just being optimistic with my wild guessing of where the series is headed for the next hundred chapters when I say it doesn't feel like we're going with either direction.

For those of you worried that this series is just going to go through the shonen motions, please don't forget that this happened. I'm prepared to give it the benefit of the doubt.

Putting aside all the inevitable harem-stuff, even if this manga turns into another Shounen clichés, up until this point, I'm already entertained enough to actually care about it.

Well, either she's going to get chumped to build up this guy as a tough guy, or she'll own him too to show how far she's come. I think the latter is actually a little more likely since Souma already has that curry guy as his "rival" for this arc, but it could go either way.

I was rereading this recently, and I noticed just how amazingly funny a lot of the recipes really are. Like, early on Souma deglazes a pan with wine and then thickens it with starch and then people react like it was this revolutionary new technique.

We live in a time where they had to invent a (disgusting) microwavable mac & cheese because boiling water was getting to hard for a new generation. In relative terms, deglazing sounds like a bankai (and the auto corrector don't even recognize it as a valid word...) .

I'm just waiting for the chapter where Souma reveals his ~secret blend of spices passed down by his family across generations of cooking~. It's salt and pepper.

Also, it's a manga, there's exaggeration all over the place.

This is manga where a reaction to a cabbage dish gave us a spread of both adult men and women dressed in magical girl costumes. But yeah, during training camp, there was a point made that Soma's exceptionally creative when putting a spin on things even if he's not necessarily revolutionizing cooking.

Soma also uses a lot of foreign techniques in his cooking that he learned from his dad that he uses in unorthodox ways.
