Setting aside the tarsands, it might be because we're essentially a one party province where middling vaguely sensible but still utterly toothless conservatives are giving way to the Wildrose? Or maybe because a lot of our urban design is a disaster? Or how about the chronic inability of the province to be assertive when negotiating royalties on oil? Also we have p. bad emergency room coverage and a kind of crappy approach to care for people with chronic disabilities. That's not even getting into the kind of trans-generational shame that's bound up in poo poo like the Eugenics Board. There are all kinds of reasons to dump on Alberta, dude. There are a lot of reasons to like it too, like the immense natural beauty, Nenshi being rad as heck, and a surprisingly good local theatre scene. But that's kind of incidental to the actual topic of this thread: that amalgamation made a corrupt crack smoking racist sexist fatty the mayor of Toronto. And that's hilarious. Also, is anyone else reminded of EastEnders?

A lot of people figured Nenshi had a good shot and not just because of vote splitting. We might not be progressive in terms of federal politics because of the whole stupid western alienation thing, but I don't think that Nenshi won the election purely because of vote-splitting. The progressive bent of immigrants and transplants has a lot o do with it. Ford, on the other hand, pretty much won the mayoral election in Toronto because of amalgamation being terrible for the city itself. It's a false comparison.

Oh God, Robert Ford. From living near Toronto and knowing how hosed up he is I can see only two scenarios happening in the near future. Liver failure, or murder-suicide after he offs his wife. Guy is legitimately hosed up in so many ways. I remember very early in his "career" all sorts of rumors of domestic violence. I wonder if any of that poo poo will re-surface now that he's basically become all of North America's clown. Never in a million years would I expect to see U.S. press talking about him.
