Inatalled fsx steam against recommendations of this thred because fuckit it was 5 bux.

Been running on medium and its been fine. Flew from my local airport to another.
Still trying to remember how to use vor and ils and the such will need some tutorials for sure.

The last time I played ms flight sim I had to break out the paper manual to get the frequencies out. it may have even been on paper..
I need to see if my ps2 controller will work since keyboard flying is less fun than no fun allowed.

Well I have flight zone pdx tweaked to run on fsx and a few other things. So unless the steam version is way ahead performance wise I may just keep it as backup. I don't want to have to tweak everything again.

I dunno what "way ahead" performance wise means.. but a lot of the reviews on steam are along the lines of, this is more stable, and has better performance than the CD rom version.. I"m glad that "traisimco" fixed it.

Looking for android tools for flight planning and navigation information such as vor, ils and adf frequencies.

Also is there a recommend pdf or online site that gives a good tutorial on ifr because I suck at it.. reading the maps too.

this may be strictly out of the question but.....

What if perchance one was to do a study of the amount of entertainment value one gets out of simulated flying instead of being a tryhard who strictly is using it for instructional purposes?

Also if I were to perform said study.. would there be a way for me to be allowed to purchase all of the goodies amazon is currently showing my banner..
These things include but are not limited to.. Saitek Pro flight Yolk, Pro flight switch panel, Pro flight Multi panel, Pro flight instrument Panel.

This is quite outside my entertainment budget but if I were to be doing research they would be needed to ensure that the fun quotient ($40 flight stick) vs full sim quotient (1k in flight panels and switches) is fully represented.

Also a "No fun allowed" poster will be purchased.. or at least redtext on the something awful dot com web forums.

Also all those saitek buttons look sexy and make me nerdgasm but dedicated button boxes for flight sim may be overboard.

Any recommendations on a $40 or sub $40 stick?

I have a wheel and totally know what you mean but isn't flying a bit slower paced where fine movements arent the difference between winning and losing. I def don't have room for a yolk, gotta keep my wheel for driving.

is xPlane a whole lot prettier than FSX? and is it just gaining a lot of spergy for someone who'se a casual flight simmer.. (it's today's sperg of the month.. just like I was with racing and a host of other things I get into)

And will it make a difference to me?
Geforce210 1GB
Core2 Duo 3ghz
4GB ram

I'm gettin all spergy about my old flightsim days of yore..
at 10 years old I must have flown from Gates Field (I think that was the airstrip on the water) to Ohare 100's of times.

Then later on I had xplane (I still have the CD's somewhere) and flew around the world the wrong way (North South) as well as the right way.. but the monotony of having it fly on 6x for hours while sitting next to the TV kind of made it lose it's appeal.

So I bought b17 flying fortress and is recommended against it. There is no way to unbind controls and when you map things you can have things mapped to the same thing. Every time I use my 2nd analog stick for rudders it also turns my throtle down.. can't taxi like that. There is somw fuckary that can be done to reset stuff but its not simple. Ill probably try again when my stick arrives tuesday.

In ms flight sim... im flying the beech craft 85 twin engine turbo vor to vor and am having trouble uaing the 2 nav radios.. when I set both do I need to flip the switch on the dme to have the nav work? I think im also out of range of the 2nd vor? so I should just maintain heading until I get closer.. ?

Thanks for the recommendation guys.
Had a package delivered to my back door and it was a stick.. let my wife touch it even.

So far I'm liking the logitech 27 dollar stick. Its not a hotas setup but willdo nicely for civ flying.

Only thing I don't like it's the button on the thumb rest. I disabled that right quick, its easy to press.

Looks like a windows CE device.. what a dork.

my desk doesn't have the option of that slide out glass.. I have a keyboard tray but that doesn't wrap around my body..

X-plane 10 is back down to $30 for the next 24 hours. Only one DLC is, the Wilmington airport.

I'm moderately tempted but I've always hated spending a couple hundred for add-ons in a flight sim and owning X-Plane 9 and reading about 10 it's pretty barren without them. My one exception is DCS since it's not a civilian sim and they have sales rather frequently.

what's the advantage of Xplane over MSFS, the DLC regions that add a bit more realism to them (And spaceship)? (Is there a significant quality difference between the add-ons and payware FSX addons?)

I'd like to again say that FSeconomy has been a bit of fun. It's getting me to fly different locations than the normal.
Last night I took 3 passengers from an airport in Greece to another airport in Greece, the Mtns made it very interesting, with the Cessna I couldn't fly a straight point to point pattern becuase the time I tried that I crashed into the mountains.. there wasn't enough room to climb in my little under powered Cessna.

Also still tossing this out there.. I picked up a copy for a friend who had to re-buy FSX becuase he couldn't get the gifting to work on steam. I'll let it go for 5bux steam dollars or paypal dollars.

Is there anyone other tan saitek that makes other switches/buttons for simming? I'd love a multi-switch or radio panel at some point but from what I understand Saitek is 50/50 on getting a product that works vs something falling off in the first 10 days. I'd rather not pay 100+ for a limited use product that will fall apart easily/quickly.

Maybe I'll just grab a cheap tablet and use the some of the flight panels for android considering I got a 1/2 way decent tablet for my kids this year for 50bux.

yeah when I'm flying I stay away from the keyboard for the most part, I've cleared a lot of those nasty keystrokes from the controls settings to keep me from doing things like inverting the controls (ugh) or killing avionics/ pane lights in the dark.

I had to cheat today and switch from real weather to clear
Unmanned airport flying IFR (VFR filed) in the fog over the desert in south america, I couldn't see the airport for anything, if it was real life they probably wouldn't have let me try and land there visibility was 0.

Just finished a 2 hour flight in FSeconomy but left my passengers on the runway / gate Forgot that the planes seat count includes the right seat as well. I'm less sad about the 2k rental cost than the 7k in lost income.

Similar to air hauler is fs economy (ita free as wee) which is an mmo world for flying cargo and people around. I have also founf that purpose has made me stick with fsx a lot more than I have where I fly a bit around aimelessly them get bored.

Fseconomy made fsx more like truck sim for me. Fly from place to place doing missions getting money to buy a plane and then better and different planes
