Not planning on retiring Sahen quite yet. The whole Cast Heal and Smite Fist combo is pretty fun to play, it's just not always easy filtering smartass comments and dialog through 'Sahen Speak' Ayv osdv gawonisgi.

Therefor, as a backup sheet for possible use, and to bring our potential 'Wise cracking wastelander with a gun' count up to 4, I'd like to submit

Deacon (Jeremiah) Jessup *As a level 1 character

Born to the aging Cardinal Moses Jessup of the Divine Church, Jeremiah found himself victim to the classic story of spoiled potential, though whether his 'potential' could be anything more than abused is a question for wiser men. Held in high regards from a mix of old fashion nepotism and unnatural luck, Deacon was assumed blessed by the heavens, and was put up as spiritual figure, a priest and speaker for the church at the ripe age of 6, simply parroting the scriptures and sermons whispered in his ear rather than learning them, taking very little to heart.

As he aged and the youthful saint act lost it's convert drawing novelty, Jeremiah was assigned his haughty position of Deacon, an ordained servant of the church, and was sent out into Tennessee as a missionary, spreading faith through 'The left and right hands of God'. Of course, as intentions naturally go, this goal was quickly overtaken as Deacon found himself enamored with the endless vices available to a fast talking traveler with a few caps and a gun. Though he could be very persuasive when given the floor, the nature of his experience left him painfully susceptible to sweet talking and friendly misdirection, finding himself barely capable of turning down a bet if he saw even a sliver of winning.

Despite the fever of his religion, the moral decay and carelessness that swept up Jeremiah left him more often than not forgetful of the Divine Church's supposed tenants and prejudice, glazing over ghouls, mutants, and tribals with hardly a thought. Instead of filling his days with gospel spreading and converting, he'd bounce from the larger settlements and caravan routes in a deep haze of 'blessed' parties and compulsive gambling , often skimming funds off of the smaller chapels to buy more guards, chips, and liquor.

Now where might one encounter such an rear end? Most likely in a casino, or a church, spewing out some token sermon, or possibly among the bodies of his guards, another miraculous lone survivor of a bandit raid.

Interest appears to have waned and the game is nearly two years old. If you all are ready to call it quits that's fine by me. Same as continuing.

In any case, to those of you who have been playing and dealing with the game, me and whatever else. I'll buy you something up to $20 as a token of my appreciation. Regardless of what happens to the game, I've had a lot of good memories from it and have enjoyed playing with you all for this extended period of time.

If you want an avatar or a name change, or a steam game, or just 20 bucks let me know and I'll hook you up.

I'd like to find out where you all stand with the continuing/ending of the game.

I'm all fair and fine with continuing. Things for me have slowed down due to mainly the season and all (Michigan winter sucks the life from you), and I've at least heard similar sentiments from others. Although if more than not want to call it quits then fair's all fair. Would seem natural that the group would just reset the AI to a non murder/regret/sadness state and then set up a little settlement in the vault. Conduct their various businesses from it's safety.

Regardless, hang on to that 20bux. I'll just take a consideration for a spot in any future games that spark an interest.

To avoid repetition, I agree with most of the above (Winter sucks, fine with the game still going but okay if you want to end it, keep the cash).

As an additional comment, part of the issue is that most of our problems and prompts right now are Science-based, and IIRC, the specialist for that post-Moss was Betty. So we're just a bunch of cavemen blindly poking at all this computer stuff, and the apparent stakes for failure are such that inaction makes unfortunate sense.

StupidSexyMothman
Aug 9, 2010

Thirding the winter bad, keep-the-cash sentiment.

I think we all just kinda respect each other too much & it's causing a lot of passivity right now. I'm not opposed to rolling Science stuff with Zonta right now to get some more info or whatever might come out of it; I'm just afraid that my failing those rolls will screw things up & get us all into combat & I don't want to dictate the situation to everyone else based on my disaster of a roll.
(yes this is ironic from the one who rolled to ride the drat robotic dog trying to kill us, but I had complete faith that the rest of the team could kill it and no matter how badly I failed the only real damage done would be to myself.)

I'd really like the game to continue, personally.

Just checking, I'm never sure how to infer online stuffs so I prefer being direct and up front. Personally, I love your characters and where the game has gone thus far so I'm for whatever the majority vote is.

Seriously though if you want anything I don't mind. I tried to get some artwork commissioned for the one year but the person I went to for it was kind of going through some stuff and it fell through.

Anyhow, we can turn away from the science stuff after the Vault is tied up. Let me know what needs changing/addressing. I promise I won't kill you because of a botched science roll at this point in your exploration of the vault.

I appreciate the 20bux offer, but y'know. Hold onto it.

Also, if you want some art commissioned, I'm currently available. I've got PMs now, so hit me up.

Let's keep the game going a little longer.

Maybe if our characters can all find a concrete longterm goal to unite around and work towards, it'll give us more focus and drive for the game. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I know that Horatio would be okay with allying with UNITY, since he might score some converts out of there. He'd also be on board with the team becoming a roaming trade caravan, where he would specialize in any Elvis-related artifacts (naturally). He's a treasure hunter, essentially. I think he's more interested in gathering Elvis-junk than he is in furthering his temple's practical goals. He's less a crusader, and more of a spiritualist.

What about you guys? What do your characters want, really? Do you as players want to fulfill your characters' wants?

Quantum Ninja, for example: Jackie obviously hates shooting people and has made it clear that she wants to stop doing it, but the only way that can happen is if you retire her as a character. Do you want that to happen, or do you like playing her as the reluctant badass? What's keeping her from just staying in Johnnyville once we get there?

Jolinaxas: Lloyd wants to establish his own trade caravan, right? That's cool. I think Horatio could get behind that (see above). Do you know how you'd want to go about it?

oldskool and Sevensocks: You guys both play tribal exiles. Have you figured out why your characters were exiled? Do either of them want to come back to their tribes one day, and acquit/avenge themselves in some manner? Did they set out to prove a point, or in pursuit of some tangible goal?

I don't expect you guys to know the answers to these questions off the tops of your heads, but if you do, that's great. If not, just give it some thought. I find that thinking about these things helps me invent things for my character to want, which makes the game more engaging and rewarding for me.

Fake edit: I reread this stuff and realized that it might come off as a bit patronizing ("here, let me show you how to roleplay PROPERLY"). Let me just say that I'm sincerely only interested in helping to make this game a more engaging experience. I'm genuinely curious about your characters, which is why I'm asking about them.

I did have a penned out little background for why Sahen left Tecumseh and all that, but I stopped filling it in past the framework since overblowing it would make it less likely to work.

It was more or less a disagreement between Sahen and the elder shamans over how they were guiding the politics of the Uiaoe, and that a lot of the things the shamans were doing seemed self serving. They claimed that everything they do is guided by 'the spirit counsel' or something similar, essentially all of the previous, deceased leaders and mystics, which they claim to be able to commune with. Sahen tells them that's bullshit, and that you can't talk to the dead, which is effectively telling off the entire belief structure, and while they don't tell him he has to go, it's sorta understood he should probably leave.

That's why Sahen's kinda interested in the Robobrains and all. Anything that would imply you could keep people alive indefinitely. He's wondering if he was wrong. I was going to leave it up in the air to be decided as it played out if the Shamans were keeping past leaders alive as brain jars, just bullshitting to their own ends, or some kind of legitimate crazy fallout magic, but that's the gist of it.

I'd be happy to continue on, feel like once spring starts to close in things will pick up speed anyways, but I kind of wanted to retire out Sahen at least temporarily. He's sometimes hard to play since his MO is stand in back and look big until someone needs a doctor. That's why I submitted the preacher character. Wiseass young buck wastelander is easy to play and fun to gently caress around as.

I was thinking if we made it back to Johnnyville I'd leave Sahen to help out the doctor there and pick up as the other character.

Little late to the party, and I'm sorry for my general absence lately / don't want no money. By way of excuse, my paper was a lot of it, but also some people dicked up some paperwork in an office somewhere and so now I have to take more classes instead of focusing on research (read: spend time on campus doing work that isn't playing PbP games). I also haven't been keeping up with the thread, so now I'm not even sure what's going on with the Overseer except that he's some sort of evil robot and we're gonna try to reboot him (?) Why aren't we just destroying it?

As for Jackie's future:

The first thing I'd like to say is I'm actually still having fun playing her, but it seems like some of y'all are maybe getting sick of travelling with an angel of death. If that's the case, let me know!

It seems like a common theme in Jackie's story so far has been underestimation. Simply put, time and again people have underestimated her, from her kidnapping to the stint at an LEO in Johnnyville to Mista Love to revenge, and the slaving yards even played on that theme by inverting it: we underestimated those slavers and got GM Fiated out alive. Jackie's even coming to appreciate the social camouflage of looking like a lanky woman playing at sheriff. I don't know how it will come up in the future, or really what I'm getting at, but I think it's an interesting theme.

That theme ties in a lot of other places, too. For example, I don't think that Jackie would be happy staying in Johnnyville: she's put too many bullets in too many people with her father's gun to feel comfortable looking him in the eye. It seems like he underestimated the evil in his daughter, and she's happy to keep that piece of illusion intact. Similarly, Jackie was drawn to Neo Nashville because she could live in a place where nobody cared, and where she was just another face in a sea of people.

Unfortunately, I don't think it would be reasonable that Jackie go back to dealing cards after her recent murder spree. The whole slaver thing was a bit of a wakeup call: she underestimated the evil in the world, and there is too much for her not to help. She's sort of become evil herself, an overestimation of the justifications of her actions, but now she's sort of trying to save others from doing the things she already realized she was willing to do. It turns out that Jackie's internal monologue is a really poorly-written stereotypical action movie, but it's how I think about the character. I guess that's what happens when you base a character off of Dogs in the Vineyard and Raylan Givens.

All that is sort of why I was in favor of that caravan idea, where Jackie keeps moving. Sheriff of a town don't seem like a good fit, because hearing about raiders in the next town would have her on a horse to go fix it. So maybe she could join a sort of Tennesee-level LEO thing, travelling around and dealing with poo poo. If we wanted to go all :psyduck: fallout, maybe she could meet someone who would take her under his wing, show her how wandering the wastelands could serve others.

Or maybe she finds someone who helps her reconcile all of that bad poo poo and convinces her that actually, well, . I think that would be my preferred opinion, but I don't know how it would happen or who it would be. It could, however, tie into the theme of underestimation and overestimations in an interesting way.

I'm certain none of this is helpful if we're trying to finish the campaign, but honestly I think wandering the waste a bit more would be cool before we call it quits in any case. And if everyone else wants to throw in the towel at any point, maybe Jackie could just ride off into the sunset. She's got the hat for it.

Complete, direct opposite, actually. In game terms, the character fits the bill of a fallout character. Pretty sure a similar archetype has appeared in all of the games, and never as a considered Bad character. Mechanics wise, all the support stuff is nice, but it's still helpful to be able to dump five shots into a target per turn and still reload. Character wise, pretty sure killing on a breath and a whim is more the rule than the exception in the wastes, at least for those who are capable. Most people would probably take that as understood, even if they may not be able to do it themselves. Sahen's more averse-bordering-on-hesitant to kill by his own hand due to all that Hippocratic oath stuff, but that's all.

Well, he's got the seed money to buy any kind of conveyance short of a gas/nuke engine (so something like a brahmin cart) or to keep their current truck rolling, enough left over to buy goods to move, and a couple of fools who'll guard it / tag along. He's been giving UNITY free poo poo left and right because having the goodwill of a widespread wasteland organization means he'll have built-in safe havens as long as he stays under their umbrella. He's got a lot of markers to call in with them even before he gives them a free vault full (well, 80-90% full, he's taking as much food and clothes as can fit in the truck) of food.

Remember, this vault adventure was a side stop on the way back - they just left Neo-Nash in-game hours ago, iirc.

Also, I'm actually really liking this recent hand-to-hand sub-specialization he's been doing.

I stated I was going to make a post in OOC about your thoughts for progression, but really there isn't much for me to say in this regard. Wherever you want the game to go is fine by me.

@Went to Hell
I'll definitely be inquiring about some commissioned art.

@SevenSocks
If you want to leave Sahen in Johnnyville for a while that's fine. Any preference for how you'd like Deacon Jessup Introduced? It would be pretty interesting to explore Sahen's tribal beef. I'd run with any framework you establish in your background. I know you said you left it up in the air, but which tribal elder council plot would be most interesting to play through to you?

@QuantumNinja
Jackie becoming Tennessee's "Mysterious Stranger" would be an awesome playing out for the character. I like the contrasts you establish. One thing I definitely try to be mindful of is having real consequences attached to your character actions, and I struggle with portraying that in the immediate without making it look like a hokey rendition of Wasteland CYOA. I definitely don't think poorly of any of you player's characters or how you've written them because as far as I'm concerned, I sit down at the keyboard with loosely connected ideas and let my fingers vomit which is at times readily apparent.

@Jolinaxas
However you want to play establishing the caravan is fine by me! As with the other characters, anytime you felt like exploring Lloyd's history or visiting home for whatever reason just bring it up. You already gave us a nice vignette about Watson and it would make of a nice bit of narrative gaming not focused on "the delve" so much. Also you're right it's been about 10 hours in-game.

@oldskool
I like the zany approaches Zonta has taken as of late. I think Orokos favors the bold, that's been my experience with it for the most part haha. I think he'll be pleasantly surprised with what Betty is whipping up for him on the first floor. What's been said about exploring character "Origins" is true for Zonta of course, but alternatively just any type of endeavor you'd want to take up.

As always, let me know if you've got ideas, suggestions, etc.

You can technically go back on it if you'd like, though it seems you've already decided to roll with it, but so it's all clear for future endeavors, the modified is taken as Applied to the skill? As in -15% means Roll and compare against the appropriate skill -15, and +25 is Roll and compare against the appropriate skill +25?

Because really I've no idea how I would have missed that. I think there was some way we did it a lot earlier on where the modifier was on the roll that may have confused me, but now I can't remember.

Either way, apologies, although it could later be revealed that the information gathered was incorrect, inconsequential, or corrupted in some way. Sahen thinks he succeeded, but as with most things you do on drugs, any perceived increase in ability is just imagined.

Sorry for confusion. Yeah I'll try and state it clearer in game when it does come up moving forward, but the modifiers will apply to your skill before the roll. So you'll apply the modifier and determine success in relation to your modified target number. I think I just reiterated what you said :v:

But yeah I'll stick with your roll since it wasn't clear. In the past instead of stating it as above, I just gave you the bonus or penalty overall, or factored it in without mentioning it.

Also I appreciate your comment as well! I have a self-deprecating, apologetic nature online because I feel like stuff gets misconstrued and I think it easier to just be up front about my crumminess as a human being. I don't know if that approach is better or worse for managing expectations though lol. In all seriousness though I thoroughly enjoy this game and playing with you all. Tales from the Wasteland:
I didn't run Fallout IRL as long as I've ran this, but for a few months we played in the pre-legion midwest with a party was comprised of miscreants and a kind, but dumb super mutant with a penchant for dancing that made "gullibility" checks or "good dance" checks.

Instead of working hard to buy a vehicle or stumbling into one as you all did, the party went to one of the only reliable mail services in the region that had a fleet of restored vehicles to deliver mail.

The most charismatic of the group feigned interest as serving as a caravan guard. While the "stealthy" one(only by having the skill tagged, they were all like level 2) fails at sneak-planting a live grenade in the post master's desk.

Guards start firing machine guns futilely while the group(minus the super mutant who decided to dance outside post office shack) backtracks before the grenade explodes.

The shack nearly collapses, two people are a blown out of the building with the majority of their limbs crippled and one player dies from being peppered by an assault rifle. The mutant shrugs and the surviving players steal one of the mail vehicles and crash it into a ravine a few miles later. Killing the two injured players leaving only the supermutant, the smooth talker and the terrible pilot alive.

It was a high-cost, low-reward situation, but they got a car.

The dead re-rolled and got picked up outside of Tennessee, where we pseudo-paralleled this campaign on a highly simplified version of this system for a one-shot.

Although I've enjoyed playing with all of you, I'm going to end the game today. I wanted to play long enough to get some final closure, but I am incapable of pulling that off, and more importantly, I no longer have the time to commit to it(or the forums for that matter) and that'll only continue to be the trend as my career and home life increasingly become more involved.

Personally, I feel like I've let you all down a lot, but I also had a lot of fun running the game and playing with you. However, I feel like I'm beating a dead horse trying to keep it going and the quality would only continue to drop.

Before this closes too, I'll need to tell you that this long running game has totally been one of the most entertaining runs of traditional gaming I've had to date, and naturally, the longest.

But of course, as time moves on and we shift in and out of different responsibilities, the time we have for things like this shrinks. Same with me, and I'm sure same with some others here. (Juggling both work and return to higher education here.)

But, that said, just know that this campaign could hardly ever be classified as a letdown, it just managed to stretch a little past where it was set to end, which was likely some confrontation in Nashville we dodged by leaving.

We understand, and thank you for DMing.

Trust me.
I pretend to be a ninja.
Doctor Idle,

First, I'd like to say that I completely understand. The game rightfully ended when we blew out of Neo Nash, and everything else has been a pleasant bonus. Now's as good a time as any to call it. While a little sad, I'm mostly grateful for every last thing you did in this game, from painstaking experience calculation to letting me talk you out of Jackie Reed's death. Every part of the game was involving and evocative. On more than one occasion I've found myself rereading our game thread, bit by bit, even the parts without my character, and loving every post. Thank you for that.

More importantly, thank you for taking me in this game. My account was a whopping 18 days old when I wrote up Jackie Reed, barely 21 days when you accepted me. This is, I think, the first PbP I ever apped to, and certainly the only one from that first round of apps that stuck. Your game has run almost as long as the entire time I've been a goon, and it's the thing I've tried to carry more than anything else. I wasn't always the player you deserved, but I tried, and I'm sorry when I failed. You certainly deserved better! Seriously, whole games have grown, run, and died in the time I've played Fallout with you, and they were seldom even comparable. I can't thank you enough for taking the chance, for taking Jackie Reed, and for showing me what Play by Post can be at its best. You're a great game master and I can only hope there's an RL group somewhere that gets the pleasure ever so often of you running for them.

Thanks for showing us a great story, for letting us play in a world that felt alive, and for giving us a game that I hope goes down as an SA classic. You ran a brilliant game, and I have nothing but thanks.

Sadly, I've since lost possession of my six cowboy-boot shot glasses, but here's what I've got on short notice.

It's single-barrel, from Kentucky itself, like the sort of stuff Jackie wanted to head for when she was first looking to flee Tennessee. I hold it for special occasions, and I think this counts. Cheers, and thanks!

Also, Went to Hell, let someone buy you an avatar. I got :10bux: if you wanna post one in here.

I'm in the business of...
Absolution
What can I say that hasn't been said better already?

Like everyone else, I enjoyed the hell out of this game. Thanks for running it, and keeping it running when schedules got bad for more than a few of us on more than one occasion. You didn't let down anyone - I assure you.

Fun Shoe
Hope its ok for a random non-player to post in here, don't know the rules of TG or know much at all about pnp games. It just feels weird to post here now after doing nothing but reading for so long, and a bit like interrupting a moment of silence.

I stumbled into the beginning couple pages of the main thread looking for something to read while bored one day. It's been so long now and I've been checking for updates a couple times a week for the last year+

It's a little sad to see it's over now. Hope you guys are proud of how awesome this turned out. Thanks for making and participating in such an entertaining story.

Well, that sucks. It was fun while it lasted, though.

Quantum, thank you for the offer. I have no idea what I want for an avatar. Surprise me?
