Sometimes the admins gently caress around. These rounds are recognizable by absolutely absurd things happening for little to no reason that end up killing most of the entire crew in spectacular fashions. So, to new players, they will be nearly indistinguishable from any other round.

I thought HS was removed almost entirely because it was a superfluous role that had no special anything that a regular medic couldn't get or do? I could totally see HS coming back if the medical segment of the game got a bit more complex and branched out a bit. Currently it's just standard and genetics, right? Does robotics count for it as well? I know RD has telescience, chemlab, toxins, and... does he have mining as well? Why do I feel like he's got mining? Isn't there a genetics overhaul in the works? I know it was at least being talked about. If genetics gets overhauled, and maybe they add in something like the prosthetic limbs and stuff that people have been talking about, we could bring back HS to oversee all of that.

Does robotics count for it as well? I know RD has telescience, chemlab, toxins, and... does he have mining as well? Why do I feel like he's got mining? Basically this, yes. RDs were hacked off that they couldn't dabble in mad science when they felt like it, science roles were about to be rolled together into just Scientists (which RD at the time would be indistinguishable from), HS as a role never got taken very seriously, and aside from access to genetics and medbay's store of lootable medical supplies, they weren't worth a drat and were only notable as an easily forgettable speedbump in a Revolution round. Genetics is getting a massive overhaul because the DNA code...well. You remember that scene from Alien: Resurrection where Ripley and the cast of Firefly go into that medical bay and there's a bunch of hosed up failed clones of Ripley the bad guys are keeping around for some reason? And the only clone that's even kinda functional is still a horrific hosed up mutant that can barely manage to say "kill me"? That is what the DNA code was like. A giant, convoluted mess with scraps from old versions still lurking about in poorly-documented corners because of ten years of kudzu coding on top of a terrible platform. The whole code is like that to some degree, which is why there's a remake in progress, but the DNA code was apparently the coding equivalent of a tire fire.

The first and last time I tried to play this, I knocked myself unconscious trying to pick up a toolbox, then very nearly a second time trying to open it. Then a passing crewmember injected me with a cocktail that knocked me out, and upon awakening I found my legs useless, my speech inflicted with a chronic slur, and I had developed a violent case of narcolepsy. It took me some time to gather (at the wrong end of a security baton, while still unable to stand, in between bouts of unconsciousness) that my assailant had stolen my helmet and nametag, and gone around griefing the entire station into catastrophic meltdown under my name. My attempts to explain between mouthfuls of tongue that I hadn't been mobile, much less awake for the duration of the round, were pretty unconvincing to the crew, most of whom were calling for my ban. One kind soul saw fit to drag my nonfunctional corpse the remainder of the way to the escape shuttle, and while I didn't end up banned, I had pretty much been labeled an object of distrust already. So, there was that, and there was the horrible client lag. Great first impression.

Now it's true that some people contribute in other ways by making games or helping users, by and large the majority of our userbase are leeches who complain a lot but don't do anything to help out. And that is why this project is going to die. Tom posted:There are plenty of things we could try but I am tired. I am not disappointed by BYOND the software but BYOND the business never worked, and spending so many years trying to massage something into a business is just the wrong way of going about things. Tom posted:SS13 has been very successful and I hope to see it do well in the future, whether that be on BYOND or in their new ambitious development. However, to be clear, it hasn't helped us because SS13 users rarely visit BYOND to play other games, contribute to ad revenue, or help other users. People assume that "more traffic == good" but that is only the case when that traffic nets you something. Now perhaps we'll make something through the interstitial ads from SS13 users although I tend to think, from my encounters with many of them, that they'll just complain and stick to the old pager, which is fine. quote:The ad system and Membership "nagware" may make enough to keep us afloat, but I can tell already from looking at the preliminary numbers that they will not push us forward.

Picking Security as a job for your first round was your main problem. Don't do that. Security is one of the most thankless and stress inducing roles you can play. The admins would know what's up so you didn't have to worry about getting a ban just because someone was pretending to be you. An irate crew calling for your head is pretty standard. Try not to worry about it, because chances are it will be completely forgotten by the start of next round. If someone does try and give you hell for stuff that happened in a different round then admin it, because that poo poo don't fly. As for the lag, well... There are all sorts in this game, generally you only need dishonesty if you are an antagonist. That really just boils down to isolating people and murdering them. I've been playing for a year and the client still pisses me off sometimes, but you get used to it and just gotta learn to deal with it and not take the game too seriously.

I remember my first time being a changeling, I spent the entire time dragging random dead bodies into the crematorium after I was done "borging" them (because who goes in there, honestly) and absorbing them. My colleagues stood up for me when someone thought I was the changeling, because I saved their life from another traitor by stinging him when he attacked. Of course, all they saw was me whacking the guy round the head with a toolbox. Eventually I was offed by a vampire, because every round i'm in with a vampire, they dominate. I have no idea how you're meant to deal with an invisible attacker.

Shut up Humble dogstile posted:Eventually I was offed by a vampire, because every round i'm in with a vampire, they dominate. I have no idea how you're meant to deal with an invisible attacker. Vampires were formerly "balanced" by being incredibly weak before getting a rather large chunk of blood. This led to most vampires tying a guy to a chair with a medbot next to them and drinking from them for ten minutes before going on an unstoppable rampage. Now with the rebalancing of feeding and their early powers, especially the flash-like stun they get, they're far more viable to play early on, but still absolutely terrifying when full on blood. A vampire can be dealt with pretty simply if you nail them early, but by the time they get to 500+ blood you might as well bend over. In mixed rounds, the one traitor team-up I trust above all others to clean out the entire station is a vampire and a changeling working together. Combined, they have tons of ways to incapacitate victims and ensure secrecy, and a vampire can get all they need from a prone victim without the changeling losing any DNA from the corpse left behind. I've racked up obscene body counts as a vampire/changeling working with others like this. Of course, sometimes you reveal yourself and you just get whacked, as shown earlier .

Change is a slow progression. At the time I thought I was fully rehabilitated. Since the last ban I have given a lot of thought about my errors, and can at least tell you I'm a much different person compared to what I was then. For instance, I've learned that the BMI of others is purely their own business and not mine.

The only reason people keep their PDA is for traitor items. Most of the time it's left in a box or thrown on the floor. A PDA app store would be cool and give people a reason not to throw theirs in the trash. Spend your life savings on an owl icon pack, waste time with virtual owl 2.0 or jailbreak it and make it never stop honking.
