:siren: MOD NOTICE: Some of the links in the OP have succumbed to link rot. Malware may reside within! Please don't click through a browser malware warning! :siren:

What is Cataclysm?
Cataclysm is a free roguelike post-apocalyptic survival game. You awaken in a evacuation shelter after a biological attack on New England, alone and armed only with a penknife. you leave the shelter and you find unspeakable horrors, irradiated craters, streets lined with wrecked cars and the shambling corpses of the once-living. This is your world, and you must survive. Food intake, sleep deprivation, morale, limb damage, mental health and many other things must be managed constantly, and one wrong move can result in your death. Staying in one spot is near-impossible without starving, so most of the game depends heavily on exploration.

What does it look like?

Whats the gameplay like?

You can build your own weapons, shelter, vehicles, machinery and other assorted things.
Use bionics, mutations and other enhancements to your advantage.
Also use a wide variety of modern, old and built weaponry ranging from a plank with a nail through it to nukes and railguns.
Encounter over 70+ different monsters, mutants and others.
Hunt over 10+ animals.
Become addicted to drugs.
Contract diseases and radiation poisoning.
Feel the weather change with the seasons.

And much more.

A rough 48h in game play-through:
-Perform self surgery with bionics.
-Eat dead fetuses for fun, nourishment and mutations.
-Become schizophrenic.
-Read a book about trapping.
-Get poured on by acid rain.
-Find a secluded house.
-Pass out from delirium, 10 ounces of alcohol and 5 pills of Prozac that you found in the kitchen.
-Wake up to find a zombie army outside of your house.
-Pop a few more Prozac and caffeine pills.
-Proceed to light the house and most of the zombie army on fire.
...1 day later.
-Come back and notice that there's no zombie bodies or ashes laying around. Yay, schizophrenia!
-Build a car by scrounging up old pieces of machinery.
-Drive that car headfirst into a pile of deer.
-Overdose on your leftover cocaine while you lunge into a gas station, exploding little bits of flesh and metal all over the town.

The possibilities are endless.

where can I get the game?
The developers keep changing their download links, so if these links below don't work grab them from the right side of their website.

MOD EDIT: Link removed! Things might be dodgy now!

The nightly build is a more unstable version but has the cutting edge features (and bugs). It can be downloaded from the website above.
Also, If you're feeling fancy you can also download and compile yourself the source code available on github.

Goon Jon93 is also working on his own offshoot goonDDA, which aims to fix issues with the game such as; Bears on more cocaine than Tony Montana, arrows being insanely OP, etc. This is in very active development, and the latest build can be found several posts down HERE.

I'm playing the game now, why does it have a kickstarter?

Money to pay for a full time developer to work on the game, for a more detailed answer check the kickstarter page.

Newbie advice

Under the Special tab in the main menu is a tutorial, which may help to begin with to familiarise yourself with keys and items as well as game concepts.

'S' is the save and quit key, while '?' is the keybindings list.

:siren:The skills section at character creation is a newb trap!:siren: Skills can be learned throughout play, a point in a skill is maybe ~5 hours of reading, while Stats like strength are fixed after creation, discounting random mutations. Because of this, you should only take the bare minimum needed at the start to create basic tools.

For a beginning character, a recommended build would be:

quote:

Traits
Advantages

Fleet-footed - gives you 15% more movement speed, a godsend for when you run out of caffeine pills.
Inconspicuous - makes enemies less likely to wander towards you while you're sleeping.
Animal Empathy - only costs 1 point but makes it easier to kill critters and grants you near-immunity to those loving bears :argh:
Robust Genetics - makes you more likely to get 'good' mutations over bad ones

Disadvantages
Far sighted - you spawn with a pair of glasses, without which you can't read and craft like poo poo. You can easily find and keep a spare pair of glasses on you.
Glass Jaw - 20% less head HP, bring some bandages.
Trigger Happy - when firing an automatic weapon you have a chance of firing more than you meant to, this only affects automatics though.
Truth Teller - You have difficulty lying to NPCs. Which aren't in the game ATM.
Ugly - some NPCs will react poorly to you

Skills
Survival, Cooking and Chemistry are some of the best skills to go with in the start of the game. Melee weapons skills are also useful, especially combined with martial arts.

The remaining points can go into your stats, i'd recommend at least 10 in strength to get the most bow range and some in perception to increase accuracy. Dexterity has become more useful in the latest versions due to more emphasis on melee.

Archery has been replaced by melee and military recruit as one of the best starts.

MOD EDIT: Wiki link removed

None of my keys are doing what they should

Key presses in Cataclysm are case-sensitive; v is a different key to V for example (morale modifier screen vs a list of all nearby items in this case). This also applies if you have CAPS LOCK on.

Help, my window is tiny!

In the options menu, look for the viewport width and height settings, which control many squares appear. Default is 12/12 but the game can easily be changed to 40/30 or higher. This doesn't let you see physically further than you could otherwise, however you'll find yourself shooting at off-screen targets less, and fewer times when you suddenly find yourself 6 squares from a rampaging Hulk or Bear.

Where are my tilesets?

There aren't any, learn to appreciate ASCII :reject:. In all seriousness, tilesets used to be available when Cataclysm was still run by whalesdev, however none are compatible with DDA anymore. Tileset support may be coming in the near future though.

My dude started reading and he won't stop!

Press the '.' key while auto-reading to stop at any point.

The zombies are reanimating! :supaburn:

In the 0.6+ (or the current nightly build) zombies will reanimate some time after death, you can get around this by 'B'utchering the corpses to cut them up into little pieces.
Or do it the proper way and make a bonfire. :flame:

I've cleared a town, but the zombies keep on reappearing!

There are 2 spawn modes for zombies, static and dynamic.

    Static spawn
is the default, where the majority of enemies are spawned into the world on creation, and once they die they will never respawn aside from the reanimation mentioned above. However, this has the disadvantage of having late-game enemies present as soon as you spawn, and it can be difficult to get into a town at all without being driven out.

Dynamic spawning is the alternative, which gives a 30 minute grace period, after which enemies begin to spawn into the world based on time and noise. This means you'll never end up being murdered by zombie dogs on day 1, but you can't clear an area permanent and using a shotgun will spawn more enemies than you kill.
Which one you use is completely up to personal preference, however many here prefer static spawn as it is possible to make urban areas safe.

Dr. Cogwerks posted:

Rolled a random dude, Cole Hill. Cole's a dude in a t-shirt, jeans, glasses, and has an inhaler, got some computer skills and gently caress all else. A nerd. Chats up the lady in the shelter, pisses her off by asking for too many free things.

Cole takes a stroll out the door and runs into about a dozen corpses in the intersection right outside the shelter... yikes! What've they got? Oh cool, a machete, a Tec-9, a Mac-10, an Uzi, a 9mm pistol, a bunch of .45 ammo, a pair of silencers, and several pounds of meth, coke, weed, and porno mags.

There was a whole goddamn gang laying around dead in the street, and now ol' Cole is strapped as gently caress. Cole goes for a walk to the east a bit and spots a wolf... maybe this is a good time to test out the Mac-10? Blam. Blam. Miss. Blam. Blam. Miss. Having no firearm training at all doesn't seem to be working so well for him.

Now Cole has eight loving wolves swarming out of the forest after him. Every shot misses and the wolves are hella pissed. What to do, what to do... I know. Smoke the meth. Equip machete. First wolf goes down instantly. Cole then butchers it with the machete right in front of the rest of the pack.

This seems to upset the wolves profoundly. They stop fighting. They just stand there, not doing anything, apparently wondering if Cole's now the alpha male. Cole has not forgotten. Cole doesn't forgive. He walks up to each wolf in the pack and headshots them with the Mac-10. Most of them just vanish in a red mist, leaving no meat. Cole butchers the rest, heads back to the shelter, throws the wolf meat around the perimeter as a warning to others, lights a blunt, and kicks back with some beef jerky and a playboy.

Cole walks into town the next day and ices a couple zombies just for fun. Cole finds a pawn shop. Smash the window, alarm goes off, three zombies run up. Blam. Dead. All is quiet for a few minutes as Cole raids the pawnshop of mostly worthless junk.

:siren::woop::siren:

DROP YOUR WEAPON, yells a copbot!

gently caress that. Cole ain't no busta. Cole unloads the whole clip into it... and nothing happens. Copbot is unharmed. poo poo. Zombies are approaching in a larger group now. Cole empties the Tec-9, the Uzi, and the pistol into them while being chased by the copbot. More sirens, more copbots. Maybe smoking four more meth rocks will help?

Nope.

Machete in hand, Cole falls to the swarm of copbots, surrounded by zombie corpses and empty guns.

gently caress da police.

---Clare Haynes: Living vine creatures + girl = Japanese fantasy.

Dr. Cogwerks posted:

A new death:

Clare Haynes, somewhat skilled in rifles, hauled rear end out of the emergency shelter in search of the gun shop about a half mile away. Zombies spot her. She manages to get inside the gun shop just as a half dozen zombies start bashing the windows in... all the racks are full of ammo, but just ammo, no guns... in a panic, she finally finds a .22 rifle in the last rack as the zombies reach her. Blam, headshot. Blam blam blam, with some beatings in there too. Takes a lot of damage, but manages to survive a wave of about a dozen of the fuckers who were running up the alley into the shop.

She goes on a search for food, takes out a few small crowds, then gets a horde after her in the military surplus shop. A boomer erupts in goo all over the MREs. Gross!
The zombies get all hung up in the store aisles though, and she survives.

It's impossible to sleep though, and each time she tries, Clare just ends up hungry, thirsty, and angry. She makes her way to a gas station full of food, and runs into a young triffid on her way back out. Bang. Guess what starts coming towards her? Triffids, so many triffids, young triffids, and vine beats, from every direction. There is no escape. There's not enough ammo.

Clare turns on her MP3 player, lights up a blunt, and stands by the gas pumps with her lighter in hand.

The triffids arrive.

Boom.

Before this point, Clare had killed one triffid.
End game report: 33 dead zombies, 60+ dead triffids.

---James James: Who mixed blood with my Oxycontin?

Dr. Cogwerks posted:

The guy who lasted the longest was James James (random generated name), a schizophrenic masochistic arsonist survivalist with a longbow, a hammer, some pipebombs and a ton of molotovs. James wore a nice suit, dress shoes, and a motocycle helmet. His buddy was an NPC in ripped jeans and a tank top who was pretty skilled in Muay Thai. The NPC would just tear rear end through huge crowds of zombies while James James set everything else on fire. Anything that got near James would get a hammer to the face.

He burned down a hospital and heard the distant explosions of dozens of boomers all day long, place was completely infested with them. One of the houses near the hospital had stairs going down to a basement... there was a damned grow-op down there. Huge basement with about thirty units of weed down there.

New fort!

So James and his buddy went on a run south to find some more supplies, but wasn't paying attention and walked over a mound of dirt. KABOOM.

Goodbye legs. Hello tiny tiny sliver of remaining health. NPC buddy gets into a fight with several zombie brutes while legless James hauls himself back into town to the grow-op basement, in the dark, in excruciating pain. Somewhere off in the distance, the muay thai dude dies. Scary noises are coming from every direction. Some are hallucinations, some aren't. James eats more oxycontins than he probably should, finally gets back to Weedfort, smokes a pound, drinks a bottle of whiskey, pops a few more oxys and passes out for the next couple days to sleep off his landmine injuries.

He wakes up dehydrated and famished and goes through most of the supplies in Weedfort. First step outside the door, he gets attacked by a lightning zombie and almost dies yet again. None of the pharmacies in town contain any first-aid kits and it's getting awfully close to nightfall again. Angry at his failure to find anything useful, he burns a few spider-infested houses down and a couple of gas stations too just to cheer himself up.

This noise attracts triffids. And vinebeasts.

James James dies in the dark, alone, strangled by a sentient vine. R.I.P.

I wouldn't say that archery is particularly overpowered. You are left unable to deal with skeletons, soldiers, robots, or brown spiders, plus there's a strength requirement. Range is only 10 so you have to get close to wolves and zombie dogs to fire. You also need to reload before every shot.

It's one of the best choices in the early game, but only because melee is so dangerous and gun ammo is hard to find. Throwing is also really good early game.

On static spawn at least, it makes sense to switch to a gun as soon as you can find a steady supply of ammo.

Just tried this, It makes the viewport and map displays look much nicer. It's very swell when the map tiles are actually as long as they are tall, I always got confused when monsters where approaching vertically and I was running away horizontally.

Makes text display a bit less legible though for some reason.

ROME DID NOT HAVE ROBOTS, FUCKWIT
Man, the morale system really needs to be ripped out from the roots, and something new installed.

I'm trying to think what would reasonably affect it. Food ought to be a big deal, but right now it basically doesn't matter, since even the best food quality effects are gone within half an hour...maybe a food 'component' of morale that is controlled by the quality and variety of your recent meals, so you can get by with stuffing cold raw meat into your mouth for every meal, but it would actually be meaningfully worse than cooking that meat, which would itself be worse than also supplementing that with some berries and vegetables from time to time. The best of all would be to actually use those advanced recipes the game throws at you, preparing yourself some meat stews or vegetable pizza or spaghetti bolognese.

Drinks could be part of that as well. Just drinking water with every meal would be fine, having no morale effects one way or the other, but you could keep yourself in a better mood by having orange juice or wine or whatever with your meal.

I'd say the game should be 'looking back,' one way or another, for about a week in terms of determining food satisfaction. At least a couple days.

Then you could have another component for rest, where you get the fullest benefit if you're able to get a full night's sleep in a bed. Less if you're interrupted by zombie attacks or whatever, and likewise less if you're just sleeping in a chair/rollmat/cot, or god help you, on bare cement or something like that.

Then...entertainment? Could give some meaningful benefit to those magazines that are always strewn about. Maybe a similar 'variety' calculation, where re-reading the same magazine gives you virtually no benefit, though it could recover some of its entertainment value if it's been a while since you've read it. (Potential problems here include tracking how long since you've read a particular magazine, and that right now two Newsweeks are entirely identical to one another, while they might or might not represent different issues which could be 'new' to you, even if you've read another one.)

New build of GDA is now up. This will hopefully be the most stable version of GDA yet.

From now on all future builds will be placed in the GDA post under OP so you don't have to hunt for my posts every time I update.

Anyways, I took a look at the values for wood arrows and pebbles and it was immediately evident why they were so powerful; they had their values kicked up to around the power of 9mm ammo.

Welcome to the gently caress Archery Future!

The power of wood arrows and pebbles have been SIGNIFICANTLY NERFED in GDA. Do not expect to take archery 2 and survival 2 at Char Gen and slaughter entire cities of zombies. Bows and ammo are now time consuming to produce and lack the power they once had.

Carbon Fiber arrows have been added as a craft-able at level 2 mechanics. It requires 1x Steel lump and 1x blade to produce 10 arrows. CF arrows are MADLY powerful and are effective against armored targets but have a higher chance of breaking on impact. Low skill archers will have a hard time getting them to hit however.

Crafting times for Bows, arrows, slings, and pebbles have been MASSIVELY buffed. A Bow (which now requires level 3 survival to craft) takes 1 hour to craft. Expect ammo to have a similarly realistic crafting time.

As always, use the suggestion box to report bugs and your ideas for future builds. If you have an issue with the balance changes post in the thread about it, do not submit that to the idea form.

Note: I've rolled back from SDL in this build. I will wait until that isn't an ungodly mess to implement.

Other than one weird goon repack (and maybe the newest, as I have yet to try it), the first line in FONTDATA needs to be the name of the font as installed in windows. So try changing "data/terminus.ttf" to "Terminus" and it should work. So I just stumbled across a Master Zombie for the first time, and it turned a regular zombie into a zombie dog.

I think someone posted in the old thread that zombie dogs are just a replacement for fast zombies. Looks like they didn't put much effort into the zombie transformation logic.

Welcome to the gently caress Archery Future!

I don't know, personally I'd say the primary reason why archery was so overpowered was just how fast you could fire. It's a longbow, you shouldn't be able to fire it 3-4 times in the time it takes a zombie to attack you. I think that making it just a bit faster than the crossbow would work wonders to make it more balanced.

What a childish tactic!
Don't you think you should put more thought into your battleplan?!

Well, I finally have a bit of a decent game going. Got a house well off the edge of town, a modest stockpile of food and drink, some miscellaneous junk and even a shotgun (but no ammo). Guess I'll have to work my way into town, slowly trying to find more supplies. I wonder how long this'll last.

Do "burnt" zombie corpses reanimate? I gathered some dead zeds around my base into one square, threw on some non-fitting cloths and a few big sticks for kindling and lit it all up but the corpses were still there after the fire died out (which didn't take too long). Also how do people deal with volume limitations? Wearing backpacks and stuff as well as clothing causes encumberment penalties, which are a nasty blow to dodge and melee. I know that probably doesn't matter much when you've got reliable ranged weapons, but all I've got right now is my crowbar, so it kinda sucks.

Why was 'e' removed as an exit the car keybinding? It's bloody annoying.

Edit: Regarding zombie dogs, it looks like they can bash down doors. Such a lazy swap.

I hit 'e' to stop controlling my car?

Check your keybinds, you can change them up in the options I'm pretty sure.

I mean, if you're a successful actress and you go out of the house in a skirt and without underwear, knowing that paparazzi are just waiting for opportunities like this and that it has happened many times before, then there's really nobody you can blame for it but yourself.
For some reason, the controls for vehicles have been changed in the latest version. You have to use the menu for turning your headlights on and off etc. to leave your car now.
