Mmmm, mmmm, MMMM!
Adeptus Fuckstodes

You arrive in a small bay. Along the length of the bay there are large hatches which you recognize as leading to drop pod launch chutes, though there are no actual drop pods. Except for a bulky machine, six people in power armour, and a human wearing an intricate robe, the bay appears to be empty.

When you approach, the man turns to look at you, and you see that his face lacks the usual features. Small symbols of Tzeentch have been tattooed where eyes would normally be. The man executes something between a deep nod and a small bow, and you hear a calm and pleasant voice in your head. "I am Victris, the head astropath of this vessel. I have been given the task of relaying to you Lord Aphesius' instructions for the coming mission."

The man walks a few steps closer to the wall, activates a monitor, and motions you to come closer. "The planet is an agricultural world, practically one large farm. A month ago, one of the local imperial nobles discovered an object of great value in ruins under his estate. Unaware of it's nature or value, he sent it to a mechanicus facility for study. Your task is to retrieve this object."

The display switches from a picture of your target to a map. "The planet is under attack by orks. More importantly, the ork threat has been responded to by an astartes chapter. The presence of Marines Errant strike cruisers in orbit necessitates a degree of subtlety and urgency on our part. Because of this, you will be deployed in a disintegrating drop-pod." He points at the green circle on the map. "Your drop site will be in a reservoir. This should make the impact less noticeable. You will then walk to the shore and make your way to the adeptus mechanicus facility, marked with a red circle on the map. After you have the object, return to the reservoir at the point marked in blue for extraction. A colleague of mine will be waiting for you there."

Victris hands you a data-slate with the map you saw, a drawn picture depicting the item you are supposed to recover, and a more detailed map of the mechanicus compound. "The picture of the mechanicus base is from before it was overrun by orks, so some of the machinery may have been damaged or destroyed, but since it has been taken over for use by an ork mek, the main building, marked in red, and the main warehouse, marked in green, should still exist, even if much of the contents have been looted. Any questions?"

Welcome to the game thread! Please put your character sheet in your first post and post in the usual format (character name, possibly with link to character sheet, on top in bold, OOC stuff in italics at the end). If you have no questions, please sigh impatiently or something to give you an excuse to post your character sheet.

Huracán the Book Burner

Towards the back of the little group, a mountain stirs. Cataphractii warplate is a rare sight in the Vortex these days, and its heavyset Romanesque bulk - all arc segments and damascened plating cut to precise geometric ratios and unnatural tolerances - looks alien and unlike anything else in this ship of bastardised Imperial Gothic and insane spiked warp-finery. Thick copper plates - micro-etched with incomprehensible and meandering pictographic script - have been riveted onto every inch of armour that will take them, and further exaggerate the suit's inhuman proportions. With a shriek of stressing metal, the mountain walks.

Huracán comes forward, and fixes the pseudo-astropath with an unreadable ember-filled stare. So. The followers of the Architect were fashioning themselves after slaves of the Emperor now, too, were they - playing at being soul-bound? Pity. He thought he'd come to the Vortex to escape all that.

'Two questions.'

His voice is surprisingly refined, for an eleven-foot war god soul-charred by his inner rage - his otherwise perfect Gothic accent marred only the strange swooping inflection on each word. He holds up two fingers of one massive gauntlet.

'The object. We appreciate that you, and we trust that it is you, Brother Aphesius, desire whatever this bauble is for your own ends. You do not wish for us to covet it for ourselves, to rewrite the parameters of our own mission mid-deployment, to take it from you. We care not what it is, what it does, what great and esoteric powers it will grant you, so long as it serves the Primordial Annihilator. But we would like to know this, though, though: should we care what it does? Will it rend open the fabric of the Empyrean without warning? Detonate with the power of a cyclonic torpedo if mishandled? Come alive, and begin to chant world-ending refrains? These things matter, you know.'

One finger down.

'The Sons of Vilamus. There are Marines Errant Strike Cruisers, you said - we are in no state to take them on, especially if we make planetfall ourselves. I know the Sons of Alpharius, have fought the Sons of Alpharius, and know that the Sons of Alpharius can certainly get us down onto the planet past the Xenos blockade and the Astartes picket line. But what sort of Chapter strength are likely to be deployed to the planet's surface. The Marine Errant have not forgotten their last brush with non-loyalist Astartes, and though none of us is a Red Corsair, and though there are but six of us, I rather feel that they might be willing to make a symbolic point of what they do with those they deem traitorous. Are we preparing to fight a six month guerilla war against a Chapter with excellent orbital support and an Ork Waagh, I suppose I'm asking.'

The remaining finger goes down, and it hardly surprised Huracán to notice that he's absently curled his fist around his stave-spear. Barely listening to the answer that Victris relays to him, he idly toys with Cabrakan's haft, flicking its precise latching mechanism on, off, on, off, watching the hypnotically precise clasp fasten and unfasten under his clumsy fingers. Every time he flicks the switch, reality splinters slightly, and every time he flicks it back again, it reseals itself, fusing back into normality, fusing like an improperly set bone.

Brego

The launch bay was smaller than the rest, but still quite long. Whoever this being before them was (Huracán was right in suggesting it may be their host. One can never be sure of anything with the Alpha Legion), it was surely a calculated cruelty to make them walk the entire length of the deck to their appointed meeting. Just another way of informing the gathered warriors of their place.

"If this object is as important as they believe, they would not have stored it away in the warehouse. That means dealing with the Mek and his entourage, which could be... problematic."

Demeter the Shattered

The Fallen Raven listens intently during the briefing, helmet off, so as not to obstruct his hearing and vision. An interesting tool, this Victris, though one not totally surprising. To actually meet an Alpha Legionnaire is rare; indeed, the only ones Demeter had ever met were ones he killed when still a Loyalist, and that was going on over two Millenia ago.

Demeter steps forward in his armor, helmet still in his hands. His Black Legion armor stands out more for its mystery than anything; he never talks about how he got it, or why he painted it in his former chapter's colors upon acquisition.

He speaks, his voice quiet without the helmet VOX to amplify it, "I too have two questions; what Ork clan are we dealing with, and what Astartes Chapter? Knowing our enemies and their particular habits will allow us to more easily defeat them."

Well, fuck. Seriously?

Ahemait the Ever-Hungry

Ahemait seems to be mostly ignoring the man astropath talking to him and the other crew, his eyes overly dilated behind his mask. He stares in amusement at his own sword, following the intricate circuitry with an unarmored finger, tracing the symbols and, on occasionally, moving his finger in a way that makes the rune more profane; this elicits a laugh from the marine. However, his attention does dart to the man upon mention of the actual objectives, and he holds his focus on him long enough to capture what is said.

"A slew of greenskins and loyalists, and we must be quiet and cautious? Do you entertain the notion that we are but simpering cultists? We hold our God's favors, and to hold it we must give unto them all that.. entertains." His voice is muffled behind his helmet, and his eyes dilate and contract as he talks; clearly, he is either on something, or NEEDS to be on something. "Prithee, we shall slay our foe with the zeal and vigor that the crumbling corpse god inspires into his idiotic followers, and the irony shall sting!" He laughs hollowly, shaking his head at his own mirth.

Mmmm, mmmm, MMMM!
Adeptus Fuckstodes

Victris' voice returns to your head after a short while. "The object is a xenos data storage device. Unless it has been tampered with it will not explode or scream."

He turns to look at Demeter, as much someone with no face can. "The astartes chapter is Marines Errant, and the orks appear to belong to clan called Bad Moons."

The man is silent for a moment, and Demeter can sense that he's making an effort to communicate with someone without alerting every loyalist astropath and librarian in the system. "Astartes actions against the orks have so far been focused on planetary defence force outposts and population centres. Your target area appears to be low priority to them, but it is possible they might try to reclaim the mechanicus facility, or move to reinforce the defences of the noble estate next to the reservoir. This will not be a protracted campaign. We will leave the system as soon as you return."

"As long as you get the object back intact and in a timely fashion, how you choose to go about your task planet-side is up to you. Apply as much zeal and vigour as you find necessary." Though you all hear it, the focus on Ahemait is obvious, and the tone is not quite as pleasant as before.

The focus shifts to Samara and Phovos and the tone returns to the original. "Anything else?"

Brego

Brego turns to the diminutive woman, who had taken to draping herself over a stack of convenient crates. It almost seemed like an elegant duvet the way she lounged on them.

"Your reputation for flippancy precedes you, lady, but you would do well not to insult our host or his retinue. Surely you have an inquiry or two?"

Huracán

The Salamander doesn't look at the Astropath while he answers, too intent on the hypnotic effect of toggling his force spear on and off to look up and make eye contact (if you even can make eye contact with a faceless patch of unbroken flesh). He nods towards his fellow former Librarian.

'Marines Errant: fleet-based Chapter, logistically adept, constantly on crusade. Weren't you listening, Demeter? He said that already. Bad Moons Clan: 'flash', with a superfluity of arms and armour at their disposal. This engagement is likely to be messy, whatever else happens - both sides have the infrastructure and resources to rapidly deploy yet more self-sufficient infantry and armour divisions to oppose any emergent threat. I'd counsel the use of overwhelming force (but then, when would I not) to clear out path, and make sure that we do not engage unless we can slay the foe utterly, and prevent them from regrouping in numbers that, I fear, even the prancing witch of the Dark Prince over there will find difficult to deal with.'

His lips move on little more than autopilot, reciting the strategies and counter-strategies laid down by Guilliman many thousands of years ago. The Errants are loyal Ultramarines successors, and though he knows not to underestimate their adaptability, it's been hammered into him for two hundred years to think as they would.

His concentration, though, is somewhere else entirely. The Book Burner's fingers tense unconsciously around Cabrakan as he hears about the xenos object's true nature and function. He can already tell he'll be sorely tempted not to live up to his hard-earned soubriquet when they find it, and can just picture it being pounded to dust beneath his adamantine tread, all information it may have contained lost forevermore, sacrificed to the glorious oblivion of Chaos. He'll try to resist, of course - being trapped on a war-world without hope of support is unlikely to go well for him - and considers instead whether it might be worth having a go at reading the information off it himself first - yes, that'd be better. Keep the Alpha Marine happy, make sure he gets his toy. He turns back to Victris, his eyes relighting as the visions of the profligate destruction of priceless records fade from his mind once more.

'Humour a curious Librarian, Brother - what species once ruled this world, that would leave behind relics such as this?'

Polished skulls and helmets clink and scrape against midnight-blue ceramite as the Night Lord shifts his bulk. "I hate fighting greenskins," Phovos says, his voice wet and guttural. "They're so unimaginative. What's the facility next to the reservoir?"

Demeter The Shattered

The Librarian listens in to the response from the puppet, and then the answer from the Salamander. He steeples his hands in front of his mouth in contemplation, "Ah Yes, the Marines Errant, 23rd founding, I was a little busy at the time they were founded, yet still deluded by the Emperor's lies at that point. As they are fleet based I would assume they are skilled at lighting strikes, especially from orbit, but not so much defensive combat; we should try not to defend against them."

Demeter then wracks his brain to see if his vast knowledge holds any more secrets.

I actually never heard of the Marines Errant before so didn't even know they were a chapter. Since I'm not assuming I just know everything about every chapter, I'd like to make a Forbidden Lore (Adept Astartes) at a 45 to see if I know anything else about the Marines Errant, I got nothing to help with the orks.

Again there is a short silence, and Demeter can sense the same signs of clandestine communication. "The species is known as Yu'vath. Their empire controlled much of this sector before it was conquered by the Imperium, and their technology included some novel ways of manipulating dark energy and the warp. The facility next to the reservoir is the mansion of one of the noble houses on the planet. So far House Haddon's private militia has been successful in keeping the estate from being looted by orks. A small chaos cult has taken root among the servants. One of the bartenders is responsible for getting you off the planet, so if you happen to take a detour through the place, do try to leave him alive long enough for him to fulfil his purpose."

Even with his brain thoroughly wracked, Demeter fails to recall any information about the Marines Errant beyond that they are an Ultramarines successor chapter and what was already mentioned. It appears this particular chapter had never happened to catch his attention.

After a moment of silence, Victris points at the nearest vacant drop-pod launch chute and continues. "If there is nothing else, would you all please stand on the hatch there." As you move to the hatch, a servitor approaches you, carrying a thick hose attached to a bulky machine. Victris motions you to stand closer together, and the servitor moves around you, spraying thick grey foam between you and around your legs. "I recommend you put your helmets on and ask any remaining questions." The growing ball of foam rapidly hardens around you and soon reaches up to your torso. The reason for the advice regarding helmets soon becomes clear as the servitor keeps covering you in the grey goo. Triggered by the movement of helmets being donned, a mechanical voice requests that you remain still.

Demeter's forbidden lore roll was 83, so you really don't know much about these guys other than that they're homeless ultramarine spin-offs. If you want to, you still have time to ask questions. With or without questions, you drop in morning in all your spray-on-heatshield glory.

Demeter The Shattered

Demeter secures his helmet, the eyes glowing a dull crimson as the vision augmentations activate. He looks at what is clearly a meat puppet at this point. He has no doubt that it is communicating with them, but it is also communicating with something else, likely their Alpha Legion Employer. He does not share this information, as knowledge is power, and looking at this group, Demeter will need all the power he can get. Demeter stands impassively and waits for the servitor to finish.

Waci

Mmmm, mmmm, MMMM!

The servitor finishes covering you in the foam, and after a while it has hardened around you. You hear the muffled sound of grinding metal as you are dropped into the launch tube, and not long after you are fired at the planet. When you enter the atmosphere of Seculundum, you start to decelerate and can feel the temperature rising even through your power armour and foam shell. When you hit the surface of the water, the impact vaporises tons of water. While the evidence of your arrival dissipates into the fog, you sink to the bottom of the reservoir, your now charred heat shield quickly dissolving. When you reach the bottom, you effortlessly shake yourself free of the disappearing remnants.

Having successfully reached the planet, you start walking in the obvious direction: uphill. After a few minutes of walking, Demeter can sense telepathic communication near them. It feels like the opposite of the astropath's efforts on the ship: crude and careless, like the howls of pack animals. Alerted by this, he keeps his eyes peeled for potential threats. This pays off when the source of the psychic noise becomes clear. Even in the dark, your helmets sensors allow you to make out the outlines of five large aquatic creatures approaching you.

Always-on psyniscience and some single digit perception rolls mean you avoid being embarrassingly surprised by local wildlife. You can see five of them, 30 to 40 meters away. I'm going to be doing initiative in a slightly modified way to compensate for the general slowness of PbP combat. Rolls will determine whether you get to act before or after the enemies, but among yourselves actions will happen in the order they're posted.

Huracán

Huracan regards the chute warily. He is well aware that this might be a trap, some sort of abstruse occult sacrifice, to make a burnt offering of the six Astartes in the upper thermosphere, but is satisfied that the blood of Vulkan running through his veins, and the ragged patched adamantine plate ought to be able to deal with something as banal as re-entry burn. With an ungainly thudding leap that rocks the support frame of the drop-pod chute, he leaps down, and consents to be shrouded in expanding foam. He is calm during the descent into Secundulum's atmosphere, and into its ocean, knowing that he rides to battle upon a disintegrating comet of flaming industrial contaminants, to burn this world or be burnt upon it, and that no matter what happens upon this meaningless backwater world, it ends in fire. He barely feels the impact - the haptic simulator network in his armour is nearly worn out, and he can't quite bring himself to mourn its passing.

He is content to follow the others in their little tramping progress up to the shore, relying on his half-ton bulk to anchor his feet beneath himself. Each step plunges knee-deep into the thick alluvial silt of the reservoir's floor, and though he tries to high-step through it, quickly realises that he has the leg strength to simply plough through the mud without much trouble. It may compromise visibility to the unaugmented, by throwing up up a cloud of obscuring mud in his wake, but he does not like the idea of being impeded or forced to change his gait by something as mundane as some mud.

Contact. He hears Demeter's muttered warning, and blink-clicks out a muted sonar pulse from his armour's onboard auspex suite. Five returns, that, if they didn't know he was here before, certainly know he's here now that he's flagged up his location in sonic letters fifty feet high.

The water pressure cushions his Terminator armour from the worst excesses of the pull of gravity even as it deadens and slows his movements; it gives his movements a strange, leaden balletic grace as he twists himself around, drawing his force spear in a single fluid motion. It describes a lazy arc through the water, corroded and pitted surface glinting in the underwater half-light.

As he brings the psy-focus up into a ready position, Huracán opens his mind to the warp, just a crack, baiting his line with just a scrap, a morsel of his despair, his rage, his loathing for the mortal world. It's not much - he's hardly looking to call up anything Malleus Extremis here - but for this minor skirmish against some curious pond-scum, it's all he feels he needs. Yank, tug - something's caught, some minor warp predator thinking to intrude into the mind of what it believes will be a weakling mortal psyker - and he has it, trapped, helpless in the reptilian coils of his psyche. Cabrakan's tip unfolds into burning radiance, its unearthly flickering heat somehow burning even the water around it, leaving it blackened and smoke-choked.

His right hand flexes, contorts in the half-aquila mudra drilled into him by hundreds of years of rigorous practice in the Chapter Librarium, and surges forwards, hurling the tiny spark of bound warp-spite towards the approaching predator.

Initiative: 1d10+1 = 4.

Manifesting Doombolt, unfettered, at the nearest creature (it has 40m range, so I should be able to hit): Wp 70 + 10 (Psy-rating) + 10 (Cabrakan is a pay-focus) = 90. Rolls an 89. Disappointing, but a success - assuming they've not got any sort of psychic defence on top of their communication capabilities.

Damage: 1d10 + 2 (Psy-rating) = 12 Energy Damage, Pen 8.

Brego

Brego's equipment kept itself in place as he dropped. The air-tight pod that holds his autocannon is intact, as are his bolt weapons. Unfortunately, the quickest path to their enemies' destruction lay in that stored heavy weapon and being underwater is certainly no place for most projectile weapons. The bolter, however, is quite different. The individual bolts are like small rockets or, in this case, torpedoes. They should suffice against the local fauna.

Bolter at the ready. Doing a half action aim and semi-auto shot at the most convenient target.

Ahemait

The sorcerer stretches luridly as he is freed from the confines of the foam, drawing his force sword with a flourish. He pauses, momentarily entranced by the hissing bubbles coming from the blade that burns with his psychic will, before his attentions return to the creatures at hand. He reaches out with his mind to them, finding them to be moronic but powerful, and the sorcerer shrugs. If the creatures of this planet wished to be slain and rendered in the name of Slaanesh, by all means.

He feels the psychic presence of one of his comrades, and watches in boredom as he lances off a bolt of raw warp energy. "Any fool with an inkling of psychic power could do that." Ahemait thinks to himself. He shrugs and slogs through the silt and mud, twirling his sword slowly around his body as he moves.

Not enough range to hit them with my sword or use one of my non-Doombolt powers, so moving up as far as I can, max speed.

Demeter The Shattered

Demeter flicks the last of the insulting foam from his body, mentally remarking on the ingenuity of it, and how something such as that would be tech-heresy in the Imperium. Sensing the wild-life Demeter puts his "co-workers" on notice of their approach. The sorcerer-swordsman draws his Force Sword in one hand, and plasma pistol in the other, and activates his refractor field, a shimmer surrounding him.

Demeter slogs forward, reaching his mind out into the warp to view all the strings of fate to come, and pick the one that leaves him unharmed.

Drawing weapons as a free action, then using a half action move, and my other half action to manifest Precognition unfettered. Mmmm, mmmm, MMMM!
Adeptus Fuckstodes

Phovos launches himself at one of the marine predators, his jump pack propelling him through the water with ease. His target tries to dodge, but is unable to get out of the way of the fast-moving bulk of the charging marine, and it finds itself in Phovos' grip. Phovos clenches the power fist around his target's head, killing his opponent and crushing and boiling much of the remains.

Phovos kills one of the enemies. He also gets 1 infamy point for overkill (dealing enough damage in one blow to kill the enemy twice).

Brego and Samira open fire at two of the approaching creatures, and both bursts reach their targets. Samira's shot hits her target in the body, and the exploding shell opens a large open wound in the creature's underside, though it doesn't appear to be slowed down by the wound. Brego's burst is off-centre, and only one shell connects with the target, exploding inside one of the fins on it's side.

Predator 1 takes 13 damage. Brego gets zealous hatred, and blows a fin off predator 2. It takes 14 damage and can't move more than a half move per turn.

Walking forward along the bottom, Demeter digs into the warp, and easily finds a chain of potential events that fits his purpose. He wills it into reality, subtly altering the immediate future.

Demeter succeeds in manifesting Precognition, with a large margin.

Moving at greater speed than their considerable bulk suggests should be possible, three of the animals charge. One of them lashes at Demeter with a spiked appendage. Aided by his sorcery, Demeter predicts the assault and lifts his sword, catching the appendage in an effortless parry. Another goes for Samira, and the creature momentarily wraps one of it's limbs around her leg, but only a few of the spikes find their way through her thick armour, and the creature detaches itself. Brego is not as lucky, and the beast slams into his chest at full speed, sinking it's spikes through his armour. Embedded in Brego, smaller barbs shoot out of the spikes, tearing his flesh when the creature pulls back.

Samira takes 2 damage after armour and toughness, Brego takes 7. Demeter successfully parries.

As Ahemait moves towards the injured sea-monster, Huracán's bolt of psychic energy strikes the beast that attacked Brego. Warp energies churn it's insides, and you can tell the creature is confused by the psychic nature of the attack. A fine red mist is spreading around its head, but it's still moving.

Predator 4 takes 11 damage and is blinded for 1 turn.

While the maimed beast swims slowly towards Ahemait, a group of smaller fish detach themselves from its body and rush past him. They crowd around Huracán. Though they cannot harm him through his armour, they latch on to every joint and sensor on it, mildly inconveniencing anything he tries to do. A similar swarm emerges from the cloud of boiled pulp that was Phovos' victim, swarming around him.

The swarms can't damage you, but they will stick themselves into every opening in your armour, causing your movements to be extra crunchy as the fish are either shooed away or crushed between ceramite plates. Mechanically this manifests as a -10 to all test while you're being harassed by them. They can either be killed or intimidated away.

Demeter The Shattered

As the fish-like creature attacks Demeter, he gives into all the various fates awaiting him, and picks one where he parries its attack, succeeding. While such a feat would astound a normal mortal, Demeter has being doing it for so long, it is second nature.

Demeter looks down at the creature before him. It never really stood a chance. He was genetically designed and Chaos augmented to kill Necrons, Orks, and other Astartes. This thing was a...meal. Demeter never fancied himself a fisherman, but he would be one today. He delves into the Warp, drawing up his potential future selves. He sees millions and millions of Demeters swinging and missing, while millions more strike the sushi. He focuses on the victors, and then lashes out!

Using precognitive strike as a half action, push at +3 for total psy rating of 5. Roll is 60 WP +25 for Psy rating, -10 at a difficult test for a total of 75. Other half action as a standard attack with force sword on Predator 1, 55 if precog-strike fails, 80 if it succeeds. Still channeling Precongnition.

Damage on force sword is below, plus the willpower test for the extra nuking force damage.

I'm tempted to also use pre-cog dodge everytime I'm attacked, but I'll save that for the non-fishes.

Huracán

Huracán sneers under his helm as the shrimp-like parasites range over his armour, trying and failing to find a single soft spot, a single chink in the armour that he hasn't bolted giant armour plates onto. Terminator armour is not agile, lacks point defence or the ability to easily clear foes from its surface, and he can't exactly stop drop and roll to avoid them (nor would such a course of conduct be becoming of an Astartes of his stature). But then again, he'd never need to resort to anything so crude or unsophisticated. He merely holds for a moment, and lets the barriers to his ego relax - just a little - allowing the light of his soul to shine forth from within him.

Flames wreath his hands, his arms, his armour, conjured straight from his soul. Once translated from the metaphorical fire within to the literal fire without, they begin to be confined by the constraints of realspace, and are instantly quenched in the ice-cold water of the lakebed. That hardly matters, though, as a miniscule effort of will keeps the energy pouring out of him. The water around his hands boils and seethes, flash-heating even as it douses the warp flame spilling from him. He waves his arms desultorily over his body, hoping to scatter or simply boil alive the fishes clogging his armour.

As the bubbles stream up around him, he takes a moment to survey the lake-floor skirmish. Chitininous shards of smashed and broken pseudo-crustaceans are drifting through the turbulent, bloody water, and he can't help but appreciate the destructive power of bolt weapons, even underwater. He makes a mental note to try to loot some from the Marines Errant, secretly hoping that they run into the enemy's own Terminators, and salivates acidic bile at the thought of getting his hands on a proper storm-bolter or Cyclone missile pod again.

Not all is going well, though, and the Salamander's face contorts in alarm as he sees Brego stumble backwards away from the monstrous arthropod. Blood is billowing from the ragged punctures in the Astartes' chest armour, and even underwater - where wounds often look worse than they are, shrouding themselves in clouds of spreading blood - this is not good. Huracán's seen bolter wounds that were better. The others in this compact fight as Chaos Champions, each engaged in their own personal duels for glory and the thrill of battle, but it's not been so long ago that Huracán fought as part of a squad, with his erstwhile Firedrake brothers. He hasn't fought beside others of his kind for some time, and now that he's alongside Astartes again, long-buried instincts come to the fore - he reflexively moves to interpose his half-ton of adamantium between himself and the wounded Brego.

It takes him a second to plant his feet in the thick mud, but then he finds his footing, bracing himself. Servos and synthmuscles capable of stopping a tank dead stutter, seize, and then burst into sudden life. The Librarian surges forward, Cabrakan in hand, but relying more than anything else on his armour's bulk to protect his battle-brother.

Using a half action to use manifest flame, fettered, and then half-moving to support Brego.

Manifest flame: 68 vs. 85 (Wp 70 + 10 focus + 5 psy-rating, pass.

Ahemait

With a chortle, Ahemait lunges through the water dramatically, letting the resistance make his movements into a languid dance. He moves into the fish and tests it with his blade, seeing if the creature will even react with its primitive intelligence and understanding. He flourishes as he moves, uncaring of his comrades and their staunch dedication to simply driving a blade into their foe, striking like a fencer. A tap here, a tap there, riposte, twirl.

It's all so terribly fun, but deep down, Ahemait knows the fish can't grasp the beauty and meaning in the dance he does, and with a heavy sigh, he lowers his weapon, before thrusting it up into the fish's throat.

Hurácan momentarily surrounds himself in unquenchable flames, boiling the water around him and killing the small fish that were obstructing his movements. The lumbering giant stomps out of the cloud of soup it had created and rushes to Brego's aid. Hurácan wedges his considerable bulk between Brego and the creature attacking him, allowing Brego to get a good shot at it. The beast manages to twist out of the way of the first two shells, but the third one explodes inside it, tearing it to pieces.

Hurácan boils the swarm around him. An aquatic organism gets one DoS too few on a dodge roll and gets killed.

Samira swings at the creature in front of her, but unused to fighting underwater, her blows are slow and the target barely needs to move to avoid them. The hulking crustacean retaliates by striking at Samira, but she steps back and the creature's spikes dig into the sand she was standing on. Agitated, the creature back-pedals with surprising agility, backing away from Samira. She swings at the retreating limb, but the creature manages to yank it out of her reach just in time.

Roll of 99 to hit, followed immediately by a 4 to dodge.

Phovos waves his hand, causing a steady stream of bubbles as the power field boils the water around it. The fist is too clumsy and the fish too agile for him to actually hit them, but the bubbles and high temperature are enough to drive them away from him.

The swarm has left Phovos.

Demeter digs into the warp, greedily looking for a reality in which the thing before him is impaled on his blade. Before he realises that he has dug too deep, a group of daemons take notice of him and use his attempts to force reality to bend to their will for a moment. While Demeter drives his sword through his target, daemonic whispers ring in the water, praising the Prince of Progress and promising more preferable physical permutations. You can see the swarm off small fish swimming away from Phovos mutate before your eyes, growing spike-tipped tentacles before disappearing into the distance. Hurácan, Brego and Phovos can feel a seed of change within them, waiting to surface.

Demeter kills the fish, but the warp proves perilous while he's doing so. Samira gains 2 corruption points, Phovos gains 3, and Brego and Hurácan gain 4. They all also gain an equal amount of willpower damage. Demeter gains 2 corruption points, 7 willpower damage, and 1 infamy point as Tzeentch looks favourably on him for triggering mutation in his allies. The willpower damage is all temporary. Possible gifts of the gods will manifest after you make it out of the water.

Paying no attention to the whispers from beyond, Ahemait prances over to an example of the local fauna and inserts his sword into it. Though the creature cannot appreciate the beauty of Ahemaits graceful movement, it is angered by the damage to its body, and lashes out at the sorcerer. Powered by huge muscles within the creature's shell, razor sharp keratin spikes push to Ahemait's armour and sink deep into his chest. When the beats retracts its limb, a cloud of blood starts spreading around the sorcerer.

Ahemait is the only one in the group to pass the willpower test to resist the daemonic whispers. He deals 7 damage to Predator #2, and suffers 8 after armour and toughness.

Huracán

Huracán freezes for a moment, as he feels the queasy tingle of the warp rush over him. There's a subtle lurching sensation in his gut, a little like realising you've just exposed yourself to an active atomic pile, and his mind and soul recoil from it.

A low snarl starting deep in his throat, he turns, locks burning eyes on the source of this warp breach. Demeter. He should have expected something like this from one of the Blood Ravens. There'll be a reckoning for that, make not mistake - just not right now. Right now, though, responsible Astartes have battle-brothers and sisters to look out for. Already tuned to the characteristic , he releases another lancing beam of warp-spite out at the crab-thing in combat with the Slaaneshi sorcerer with a flick of his hand. The bolt flies true, sliding past Ahemait and striking his foe, but Demeter's careless error has sapped his psychic strength, churning up the stuff of the warp and scaring off all the minor warp intelligences he'd have used to fuel the power. It buries itself in the soft meat of the monster, and Huracán hope that this will be enough to distract it from the bleeding sorcerer.

Demeter The Shattered

Demeter feels nothing as he spears the fish with his sword, why are they still alive? If these fish were giving them trouble, how would they expect to fare against Loyalist Astartes welding bolters and wearing power armor?

Demeter hears the whispers of the Followers of Tzeentch and shakes his head. Demeter has bargained with the Lord of Change more than any other god, but still finds his unpredictable nature ... distasteful. Demeter turns not to Chaos for, well Chaos, but instead for truths. Whatever little effect Demeter had, he feels it, as if his self-worth in the eyes of the Changer of Ways has increased.

Demeter catches Huracán stare back at him, likely rage under his helm. Demeter already did not like Huracán, to damned wordy, and Demeter is almost sure he'll get some sort of stern talking to from the little sorcerer. Demeter knows his type, all anger and yelling because they are compensating for other... deficiencies.

Demeter is tempted to shoot the fish retreating from the female (why is she here, must remember to ask), but unlike the fool Brego, he would rather not announce their presence with the sound of weapons fire. He metodically wades forward, ready to strike the nearest fish.

He'd been wounded before, but never in such a way that it made the air itself around him turn red. He trails his fingers through it, swirling the water around his hand, and he laughs heartily. He tilts his head at the creature; so simple, yet it made such beauty. He almost feels sorry to take its life.

With a shrug, he extends his other hand to stroke the creature's back. The least he could do is offer it comfort, before he rends open the warp and makes something glorious out of the creature. He smiles under his helmet, but his eyes remain deadly serious as he draws from the very power of his own brain to send an electrical current down his arm and into the very heart of the fish.

Demeter walks over to the remaining beast and swings his sword at it, but the blow passes between its fins without hurting it. Phovos activates his jump pack again and charges, but the creature senses the attack and shifts out of the way just in time, and Phovos' attack lands where his target had been a second ago, while it's torn apart by bolter fire from Brego and Samira.

Ahemait

Ahemait chuckles gleefully as the creature spasms, lifting it in the water to watch the life drain from its eyes. Another morsel offered up to feed the decadent hunger of Slaanesh. Hopefully, the forced firing of synapses had been euphoric for the creature even as pain had set in.

The sorcerer grips the creature's flesh as he trudges forward, dragging it in the water behind him. He moves with his usual gait, even as his armor seals the hole in his armor. He hums as he clambers from the water, tossing the fish onto the shore ahead of him, before kneeling beside it. He reaches into a satchel at his side and pulls out a strange, complicated device with a nasty looking tip, which he traces almost lovingly along the dead creature's side. Ahemait's eyes twinkle as he watches the faint light overhead become iridescent on its scales.

With hardly a word, he drives the device into the creature's side, working it in past bone. He flicks a switch on the weapon, and the weapon begins to hum and vibrate ominously. After a moment, the fish begins to fall apart in clumps, and the sorcerer greedily scoops up the lumps of fat that fall from the body, tucking them into a different satchel. With his work complete, he stands, flicking gore from the rendering device, before tucking it back into his satchel.

Demeter The Shattered

Demeter sloshes through the water, slowly making his way up the incline of the reservoir's bottom to the surface. Once there he spends a few seconds to let the water cascade down his armor, before removing his helmet and clipping it on his side. He keeps his plasma pistol and force sword at the ready.

"I can only hope that the physical properties of the water muzzled the sound of bolters being fired, or else we may have lost the element of surprise, the only real tactical advantage we have." Demeter looks down at Ahemait as he renders the fish down. Normally he would make some half-jovial comment about sushi or brewing fish sauce, but he instead remains silent, knowing other members of the group are too serious for their own good.

"We should not delay," the sorcerer says, "to the tech facility." Demeter begins to walk off in the direction of the facility.

Huracán

The stagnant water of the reservoir boils off the poorly shielded reactor housing on Huracán's power pack, curling away in tongues of radioactive steam. He levers himself up on his staff, and looks about, scorn written clearly on his face.

'What, do you suggest we simply swagger into the holding facility, then swagger out again with the artefact? We might have the element of surprise now, but I somehow doubt we'll be able to leave unmolested, unless Brego's packing enough magazines for that autocannon to fight a running battle with Orks and/or Astartes packing orbital support over five kilometres of open farmland. The Noble's estate is that way.'

He thumbs along the lakeside with one claw-like finger.

'We locate ground transport from there, make a quick approach on the Mechanicum facility, and make a quick escape. Agri-world means long straight latitudinal roads - we can escape that way. Quicker. Safer. Provided the Chaos Gods see fit for there to be a vehicle there, of course.'

The voice booming from the chest-mounted speaker unit is different, somehow - a little deeper, with an edge on it that that makes each word sound like the cut of a sawblade, but there's the familiar distracted air to his voice as he calls up maps and other cartographic data on the region. The Salamander turns, casting his head around for the ethereal whispers of vox traffic, that might fill out his mental image of the place.

Psyniscience, to check if Demeter is still manifesting Precognition - vs. 50, but Huracán will keep trying to use it until he gets a clear answer.

Also, going to use my microbead/auspex to see if there's any vox traffic - encrypted or unencrypted - that Huracán can pick up in the local 5km area. Just a rough directional thing - would I need a test for that?

Finally, I believe we're checking corruption now - Remnants of Mutation means that Huracán automatically gets Animal Hybrid: Draconic/Reptilian, as befitting armour that's always belonged to the Salamanders, rather than mutant Chaos scum.

Demeter The Shattered

Demeter stops walking and begins to talk to Huracán, but does not turn to face him. "That is a bad plan Salamander. If you have already forgotten, our exfiltration is located in that estate. I doubt they will allow us just take a vehicle, which means combat, which means possibly harming or killing our exfiltration. Not to mention that while the house guards are holding off Orks now, if some Chaos Marines show up, they will report it, and it WILL draw Loyalist attention. I am open for debate and strategy, but your plan is the quickest way to get a strike force of Marines Errant dropped on us from Orbit."

Demeter finally turns around. He sits down cross legged, thrusting his sword into the ground before him and holstering his plasma pistol. He looks at the rest of the group, "please tell me some of you have a plan at least better than that?"

Brego

"I do. We take the simple route and make our way to the Mechanicus depo under the cover of darkness, avoiding any contact wherever possible. It may be boring, possibly slow, but it will get us there quietly and without incident."
