At least there are games that aren't just pure chance at this casino. But the most important question about it is: Is there a convenient save point nearby to regularly save your progress cheat like a fucker?

Though, at least with blackjack one good streak pays for a lot of tries(Whether you like the dealer or not) so it doesn't seem that bad from the short bit we got to see.

There's more. Pages and pages more. If you want, I'll take the time to pretty-up the rest before posting them.

The thing about the casino is that it's just sort of a ripoff of Dragon Quest 8, but without anything that made it good. In DQ8 you could very easily make great bank by putting money on every space on the roulette wheel (column is better), and for a decent sum that you could easily get from the slot machines (which are already better because of a risk reward system: you could put in more tokens to get more chances of winning, it was easy to get your money back and the non-jackpot stuff could add up easily) you had a 1/3 chance to earn 60k tokens in a casino where the highest prize was 200k and you only really needed one. The other things were 50k (armour that was good, but you could get better stuff. It was an ingredient for the best armour though), but the rest was only 1-10k so a good win gave you a huge boon and could get you really good stuff much earlier than you should: it was exciting and addicting. Even the bingo in the dinky first casino was a lot of fun for similar prize reasons: the fewer balls it took to get a bingo the more swag you could get. Having fewer rewards that are substantial and can be gotten right away really helps with the gambling minigames: even the cheap ones can be bought and sold en masse for a ton of money. This just feels like busywork that the game is spiting you for attempting.

The characters don't really know about the other villains. We've only ever met one of the council in-person, and no one has mentioned them or their leader. So far only the player is aware of them.

As they mentioned, it was apparently the end of the original game for the DS. Don't know WHY they added more, instead of having a sequel rather than a remake.

Now, Red! Seal the deal with a catchy one-liner!
That was such a perfect Miyazaki end of movie credits roll sequence. The game would have flowed a bit better i think if that was ACTUALLY the end of the game, and the credits rolled at that point, and the next part of the game, fighting the white witch and such, was counted as postgame content.

Having finally looked up a bit about the DS game, this is indeed the end of that version. The White Witch, the douche counsel, and --------Pea-------- aren't in that game. In fact, you may notice from hereon-out that there isn't any more Ghibli-animated cutscenes, so perhaps it was a "we need more content for the bigger version" decision.

I may actually be getting the DS version soon, so keep an eye out for live streams of it, should I decide to have them.

So, not-so-final boss. From a game design standpoint, Shadar's familiar, his soul soldier, his... soul-dier, if you will. It kinda continues something I've noticed in done several times in the game. Boss fights that aren't challenging so much as tedious. Sure it's interesting to see how they act and their attacks, but this guy, the Genie, a couple other of the early bosses I can't quire recall, all of them just got to the point where you've seen their big attack(s) and you're just whittling away at their HP. You're on top of healing, there's not much chance of dying (or so it seems, I'm only going by what I can tell from the videos), it's just whack whack whack at the big pool of hit points. And that's really not good game design. Just giving a boss a boatload of HP does not a challenge make. If the boss is challenging, if it's a tough opponent who giving more HP to gets harder because the player is challenged to survive longer, sure. But when there's not much threat of defeat.... not so much. This is why I don't think most of the high-HP bosses in Skies of Arcadia (still looking forwards to that!) suffer from this as much- they are legitimately threatening, you may well struggle to keep your guys all on their feet and at non-critical HP levels. I am heavily biased though so anyone feel free to call me out on that.

I'm also curious Travis, could you elaborate on what you said in the previous part, about JRPGs actively not wanting you to use items?

And uh... okay, sudden backstory/development for Shadar. Kinda late there, game. So that whole thing was during the Wizard Wars I take it? I can't help but wonder how he didn't know that his army's leader was... well, a total dick. Also, yes. One of your men disobeys the order to kill every man woman and child in a town. Clearly the proper punishment is to burn down his town! ...which is one of your own. Good job denying yourself their tax revenue. No wonder your nation's economy is in the shitter! On a more serious note, I think Halcyon is the nation they invaded, because when they mention the invasion they say "Attack Rubicon on the Halcyon border". You usually wouldn't refer to a border by your own nation. I mean, EVERYTHING is the [nation here] border. So it seems to me that Rubicon was a city/town in Halcyon.

I do definitely wish that they'd done some of the character development with Shadar sooner, or at least hinted at it more. You do get some hints that he's not got his heart fully into killing Oliver, I mean if he did he'd have just faced him head on when they fought at sea, but it doesn't feel like it matches up with what ends up happening. Am I just crazy? I can understand not revealing everything until after the final fight with Shadar, of course, but a bit more hinting at it, shows that there was some good intentions to begin with, maybe some legends that you hear throughout the game telling about the Wizard Wars that might foreshadow it... I don't think it would have hurt.

Okay, I gotta admit. The part with Shadar and Alicia... that's really well done. Holy cow. With them changing and just... wow. The only way it could be better is if they'd done voice acting for it.

I'm definitely interested in seeing where the game goes from here.

So for some reason the whole discussion about the zombies reminded me of the shibito, from the Siren series. Often when you see them they're doing what they did in life - farmers digging fields, craftsmen building buildings. There's actually a point in a later game where you play as someone slowly turning shibito and the world looks wondrous to her - the dark, rainy landscape looks like paradise, with brilliant scenery, distant music, and light raining from the heavens.

Makes you wonder how these corrupted people see the world.

Also, the boss subtitle is like many things a fairy-tale reference, this time to a story called "King of the Cats". A man gets told by a bunch of cats holding a funeral to tell Tom Tildrum that Tim Toldrum is dead.

And then he goes home, or variantly just someplace where there's a cat named Tom, and he tells the story, not knowing what to make of it. And then the cat stands up on its hind legs and goes basically "Well poo poo, now I'm the King of the Cats! Later nerds!" and he is never seen again.
