Remember, the new HOT lanes on the beltway are open to and free for motorcycles. They're awesome and so unused that they're not really scary.

My Warrior has more displacement than all your puny 250's combined. :clint:

I've got a few bikes, and usually pick whichever one works best with whoever I'm riding with. (Usually the Honda when it's not spraying oil from a head bolt. :argh: )
Been riding since 2005.
I'm down for riding wherever, hanging out in/around the city, track days, whatever people come up with is cool.

Bikes:10 Triumph Street Triple/05 Yamaha Warrior/80 Honda CB000C/05 GSX-R600 for track days/Virago 250 that's technically not mine, but has sat at my house for 3 years, so I fixed it up and ride it around.

I just bought myself a Sena cause I seem to get worse with directions as time goes on and want the GPS. It would be weird having people to talk to while actually riding, I dunno.

Speaking of which, anyone have some good rides within like an hour of the district to share?

They're not long, but you can go back and forth and turn at various intersections through Clifton off 123. I usually take Clifton Road through historic to Henderson to Hampton and turn around at 123.
There's a few decent roads out near Occoquan, but nothing spectacular. Things like Bristow Road can be fun if you don't get stuck behind anyone.

The next closest that I'm aware of is VA675 out near Luray.

Does anybody have a good mechanic recommendation in the area? I don't have anything pressing right now, but I feel like if something did come up I'd like to already know of someone. All I've seen around are scooter shops and dealerships. I think some of the scooter shops will work on motorcycles too, but it would be nice to know in advance.

The guys at Crossroads Cycle in Falls Church (Near Bailey's Crossroads) are absolutely the best in the area. No bullshit, small business, all they do is fix bikes, and they know their poo poo. The guy who owns the place is cool as hell too.

The only downside is that they're usually busy as hell so it can take longer to get work done, and they're not a dealer, so parts sometimes take time, and they can't do warranty work.

Dive bar, restaurant, pub, other? How close to inside the city? Just throwing out some ideas, I'm game for anything:

As far as places that usually have a few bikes parked outside them:
In the city, my favorite places are Shelley's Back Room, Biergarten House, or Banana Cafe.
There's Murphy's, the Fish Market, Old Firehouse, or Union Street Public House in Old Town.
Arlington's got a ton of stuff, I always seem to end up at Rocklands for bbq.

Moe's Peyton Place is a biker-friendly dive bar/diner in Springfield, mostly Harley crowd, naturally. Great food tho. We've also got Mike's American, for good steaks.

Main Street Pub in historic Clifton is settled among some fun (though short) roads.

Fairfax City has Bon Chon Chicken, which is some kind of secret Korean fried magic, and has nothing to do with motorcycles, but I currently have a huge crush on them.

We had to ride by a rent-a-cop to do this and he drove over to us, making sure we weren't about to ride around the track. They don't usually have security there that I've seen, but a construction crew was in the middle of building a big stage on the lot so it may have been because of that. I really hope the construction in there isn't permanent because it's smack dab in the middle of the track :negative: Other than that it was a good riding day with no rain.
Man, I feel less annoyed about being stuck out of town now.

Probably setting up for Warped or something, if that still goes on there. The chains on the fence probably won't come off, but I can't imagine it'll be patrolled all the time. Probably worth running by now and then to see if it's clear.

I dunno if this would be of interest, and I'll have to see if the wife's ok with the idea, but I'm kinda tempted to offer you guys space in my backyard for like $50/month or something. It's not covered space, but it's private and enclosed in a fence and close to metro. (About 1.5 miles from Franconia/Springfield)

I could also winterize and maintain for a few extra bucks. I already do that kind of stuff for a few guys in the neighborhood.

If we have multiple DC folks looking to store something for a few months, my landlord has a bunch of garages up on 1st and V St NW we could all chip in for. I believe it's ~225 a month for a 2 car garage space, not climate controlled.

Check out the map I post of our trip out there a few months ago.
211 is nice, and is a state road that basically crosses through Skyline National Park, so it's open. I *think* the Blue Ridge Parkway would be open, and that's a couple hundred miles of scenic road. It's a federal highway, but not a federal park.

Valve check isn't affected by sitting, so if you're not riding it, it can wait. I'm free most weekends in November. I think you've got my email in the group ride list, so feel free to work timing out with me offline.

The only really annoying thing about valves is that if you need new shims it means a few days with the cover off while you wait for the right size ones. The other option is to get a kit ahead of time, but that's more expensive. I'm seeing ~$80 on ebay. Probably not a bad idea to have a new valve cover gasket ahead of time. You'll need it eventually.

Cops in NYC have a well-known policy not to chase illegal ORVs, cause when they run up on sidewalks and alleys and junk, it makes them more dangerous to bystanders. Which is why ATVs and dritbikes are all over NYC. My guess is that it's getting more widespread, and the police can't do anything in other places either.
