A bit more on topic I would like to see a bit more from these guys. Unlike most of the other games I really don't have a good feel for how this is shaping up.

I'm a little concerned as well. Everything I have seen so far looks good, but it feels like there should be more to show by this point in time. A real vertical slice that shows actual gameplay and AI reactions (even if it is tightly constrained in scope) would ease my mind. Just a simple assassination mission, with a few alternate ways that it could be carried out, would be great.

The overwhelming scope is the Kickstarter conundrum though. If they had set up a more realistic narrow scope of small-team goals would they have gotten funded in the first place? Also, most of the team having come from AAA development means they are probably used to only showing the best and most polished stuff to suits during reviews.

Two other non-Kickstarter indie games that I follow the development of, Brigador and Enemy Starfighter, definitely have the benefit of scope control and free expression of work-in-progress. Enemy Starfighter is being built by just one guy who is making great stuff so far, but he was in the lucky position where he didn't have to plan for "stretch goals" or any craziness like that. Then, as far as showing off is concerned, the Brigador guys stream full play-throughs of their alpha version on Twitch all the time, with no real concern of how it is "framed" for consumption.

On the plus side, visually it's looking pretty sweet. I just love the saturated fluorescent lighting.

Guess we'll see where they go next after talking up the modularity and how it makes things more efficient.

Do we know how big the team is now? They mentioned new members.

Wow, looks like they really haven't ramped up the team. I can see why, considering the cost, but it will be interesting to see how they manage such a big title with so few people working on it. The latest Dev Diary has a few videos about the team and shows some footage as GIFs again.

They DID list that writer as one of the stretch goals, so I'm a little perturbed that they haven't brought him in yet instead of relying on their forums.

The GIFS (WEBM's, really) still look amazing, and I still can't help wondering if it's a hoax or if it's just going to be SimCyberCity with no gameplay or plot or anything. That said, if they pull this off to the extent they're hinting at, they'll be the best small team game devs since Introversion.

Anyone here an alpha backer (or going to PAX Australia for that matter)? Be good to hear some personal feedback on the early gameplay.

The track on there is cool and as ever the environment art style is excellent, in fact I can categorically say I would enjoy hearing that music in that environment.

New UI artwork seems serviceable at the moment, although there might be some animation which elevates it.

Can backers post impressions and stuff when you get it? SW was a game I played endlessly a decade ago and a good re-make/successor would basically own everything forever.

Amazingly raw for the amount of time they've spent on it. I can't believe it starts up with the default Unity graphics settings splash window. Kind of amateur. That being said, I shot some people and stole a police car, so there's that.

New in this build - there are now cars driving around the city.
Also new in this build - one intersection is glitched, causing all the cars to get stuck in a giant pile. ALL the cars. :v:

The state of the game is extremely basic otherwise. Dudes walk around a city. Dudes shoot stuff/get shot. It's definitely lacking that Syndicate vibe so far.

Very rough, like Gotdammy said. But I think it flawlessly nails the cyberpunk aesthetic. Rain, neon, people with ridiculous mohawks, heavily armed corpsec, etc. The cover and shoot mechanics are ok but could definitely use some refining. I'm also not sure what hacking does with certain things, like police cars. Hacked one and nothing seemed to happen. Are you supposed to be able to drive in this game?

The game for sure needs a bunch more work but nailing the aesthetic is a big deal and they definitely did. Not sure what you mean by "lacking the Syndicate vibe," but only because I never played the original. I'm just a sucker for cyberpunk anything.

Typical street scene, minimap is the top right. Sucky frame rate because it's set to 'fantastic' and 2560 x 1600. The minimap pings locations of interest.

Scanning view. This gives <placeholder text> about individuals and you can see where the cameras are controlled by the purple lines. Five-oh are in red.

The same market but not in cyber space. Note the bright colors.

Ladd Company reference there with the tree.

Ob Billboard shots.

Laundry reference? My team is currently standing around an ATM that we just hacked. This appears to give passive income while you're pootling around, and seems to be additive to the 'ATM' Score in the top right. Purple Consoles are cameras, and red are gate controls.

Lovely use of reflection there.

I'm actually fairly pleased with the way that this looks and handles.

Yeah, that's what I meant when I mentioned in my last post that I stole a police car. First you hack it, then you'll notice the mouse-over icon changes on it to a downward pointing arrow. That means when you right-click it again your guys will pile in. Word of warning though: it is not terrribly useful just because of the current AI pathing of the cars.

So basically it's looking really promising but this is not even an alpha more of a one-level internal vertical slice and it's nowhere near being done yet? That's good news and I'm looking forward to updates but christ, Early Access is getting worse.

Also huh I can buy it on the official site for like £5 less than via Steam. Weird.

Gooble Rampling
Jan 30, 2004

Yeah, it's really rough. I almost wish they hadn't bothered with the visual polish and just a had a well-honed white-box prototype that starts up quickly. The fact that it stalls on start-up is probably the most annoying thing. I wouldn't mind a slow loading bar animation instead of just sitting there hoping it hasn't crashed.

As an 80's gamer the original Syndicate holds a special place in my heart, so much so that I bought the new Syndicate FPS day one and binged through it in what was largely a labor of love.

I'm very interested in the development of this game and hope that it'll fill that grim-dark cyberpunk gap that's been suspiciously absent from today's market.

That said, I'm only buying this sucker when it's out of beta and fully playable. I think a lot of people expect full-fledged games when they buy something early access, and are disappointed when they are asked to tests and partially develop the barebones functions that make a game fun.

Don't touch my bags if you please, Mr Customs Man.

Played through it a bit last night. It's really quite pretty, but there's also so much going on that it's difficult at times to figure out where all the bullets are coming from. Some of the missions are also a bit awkward to figure out, like one where you have to bribe a contact with one of your characters, and they're only visible in World Scan view. Some terminals just have placeholder text. The agent skills are supposed to differentiate them but right now it's hard to tell who does what.

The hackable doors that lock themselves are also a bit annoying, since it's possible to get stuck with half the team on either side.

Also the two achievements on Steam so far are goofy, though that might be to be expected at this stage of the game.

Promising start, be very curious to see how it goes from here.

Yeah definitely don't get it right now. I only tried out the Early Access because I backed it and I figured I might as well, but the UI is horrendous, the mission objectives don't always work right, and in general the game is fairly baffling. But it LOOKS AWESOME. I fully believe they will produce a fantastic product once it's done.

That's actually a weak point in this build of the game, the guns. They feel underpowered and sound a little tinny, but I think that's FUTURE GUNSOUND so whatever. The thing that really bothers me is that the weapons look futuristic, but they have dumb Goldeneye names like the Ozi instead of the Uzi. This is a cyberpunk game, why not just make up completely new cyberpunk weapons?
