Appearantly there is an Enl playing who is trying to take pictures of all Res players in a sneaky fashion and it is pissing people off. Anyway, Hit L8 a few weeks back and there is no end-game other then social adventures. Well, screw that, going outside was fine but interacting with others is the straw on my camel's hump. Will empty the inventory over the coming days and then delete the app. And this is officially one of the more spergy posts I made. Social interaction, bleh.

I found that once I hit level 8, the people I hung out with were pretty cool. Most of the good bars around here have designated portals, or at least ones within hacking range of a barstool, so we've gathered up to make level 8 portals and then put multihacks/heatsinks on so we can gear up and have beers. Also, in other news, a player on my local faction reported he got a suspension for using the iOS port. He got the same email that people in this thread received. So there's that.

There's a green farm a few minutes away from where I work, I've had the guy that maintains it drive in front of me, slam on his brakes and recorded his conversation with me on his phone. He was accusing me of using multiple accounts and cheating, my wife was in the car playing on her phone as well while I was doing the footwork (because she's lazy and doesn't want to exit the vehicle). I ended up filing a police report and then sent all the info to Google/Niantic/whatever and the boiler plate e-mail I got was basically them saying "we can change your name, we can reset your account, or you can work with the authorities"

Some people take ingress way too seriously. In my hometown its a pretty calm 1v1 over a dozen portals between me and a fairly active smurf. When I commute to columbus however green chat explodes, and people talk about planning their routes around the daily schedules of lvl 8 blues.

Any green portal is taken down almost instantly and within a matter of hours it becomes a level 8 portal with 4 VR shields. Literally the Enlightened can do nothing. Apparently a couple Resistence players found this post after being super creepy and googling my handle. Good job being creepy fucks and totally proving my point!

Apparently, our local Resistance contains people who are so hardcore that they're on the brink of driving one of their own L8s over to the Enlightened. This is because the player who's thinking of faction-changing is actually a decent person and is tired of being on the team that contains jerks who agree to set up a low-level treaty zone and then two days later claim that they're bored with it and set it up as an L8 farm.

So I just got around to activating an invite I had in January, is there any way I can see which faction has the least shitheels before I sign up for one in my area? It looks like portal wise the factions are in a deadheat in DFW.

The Resistence have the advantage of being highly unified under one leader while the Enlightened have a more tribal mentality and can't really unify. It also hurts the Enlightened that the Resistence players are hyper aggressive and will show up anytime to flip portals that are green. In the time that I've played I don't think I've ever seen a green level 8 portal.

The Resistance down there have actually asked us to try and teach the Enlightened how to be more of a threat, but if that's the way things are I don't know how we'd be able to do any good. Oh, and the KC Resistance somewhat recently came up here and went on a nuking spree. It was a great time to be a newbie, I'll tell you what.

SalTheBard posted:Do you play in Kansas City as well? Pittsburgh. We have an ultra-hardcore Resistance who take every attack signal as a personal insult and will do things like scream into parking lots before risking their truck's continued existence as a functional machine by slamming directly into park just to recharge a portal they haven't hacked a key out of, or stalk Enlightened players specifically to drive them out of the game. Then there's the aforementioned bad behavior in re a treaty zone. The Enlightened, by contrast, are a delightful bunch, mostly laid-back. We're considering en-masse quitting for a few weeks, just to see what the blues do.

The thing is that you can get pretty far in this game being a lone wolf. If you want to watch intel like a hawk and look for L7 and L8 portals to hack and piggyback off of, you could probably even make it all the way to 8 without actually teaming up. I know for a fact that there's a guy on my side who plays like that and I think he is at least an L7. I ran into him in my neighborhood when I realized we were deploying on the same portal. He's a nice guy and we had a good chat. He just doesn't want to join the G+ groups/hangouts where we do more coordinated stuff, and that's totally cool with everyone. I feel like there's a lot of "us vs them" going on here between factions in a city, when really what you have in general are a whole bunch of individual actors who occasionally meet up to make high level portals or big fields, but otherwise we're just playing on our own for the most part and we randomly picked green or blue up front. One lone green goes and acts up, and the whole of the greens in the city catch flak for it. And if they're not part of the community then the greens immediately assume that it was a false flag operation on the part of the blue team and the whole of the blues catch flak for it. And even if we did have "teams" with actual top-down control (and I am glad we don't because Ingress is not EVE Online), if you're a troublemaker the most that leadership can do is kick you out of the G+ group. They can't go file a request with Niantic and say you've been a problem player and you need to be suspended/banned.

Whenever I pay this game I pretend I am a secret agent. I don't want people to know my identity and mostly party solo. I think most of the people being stalked are part of larger groups or are more social because I have hardly ran into any issues with anyone beyond suspicious looks. The other part of the danger it's being in places you have no reason to be beyond a video game. I have seen stories of petite getting guns pulled on them but it was random crazy people or police not other players. I could understand getting upset if all your work was really destroyed by a large group with little effort but if someone seriously gets mad about a single player taking actions in the game they are taking it way to far.

Famethrowa posted:Holy poo poo what!? I was thinking of trying this, but that is just too insane. The game's a lot of fun, it's just that you can't play it like it's a normal phone game. You've got to do the situational-awareness thing. Note that this does, yes, include "don't go into Allegheny Commons at night and stare exclusively at your phone to the consternation of the drug deal you just bumped into." e: In re the "I carry a pistol" thing, that's just been part of my life since I was 21. Every day, all day. Wake up, get dressed, check for wallet, keys, phone, glasses, gun. Check gun to make sure it's loaded and secure in holster, go to work. I know that makes some people deeply uncomfortable, but there it is. e2: Generally, "physically aggressive" Ingress players are the kind of people you'd expect to flag themselves for the HARDCORE! community on Xbox Live or whatever. They're just douchebags who are trying to physically intimidate you away from their portals. Turning your phone's volume all the way up and dialing 911 but don't hit send might make them go away.
