I don't really have social anxiety so the most cringe moment for me (not featured in the anime yet) is when she falls asleep with the neck massager and naked butler on xmas eve and her dad finds her, I too have fallen asleep with porn open in my youth

That's actually one of my favorite moments. (manga spoilers)Her dad picking her up and putting her to bed, and it never coming up again felt real nice to see. It's embarrassing for her, yeah, but it doesn't stop her dad from caring for his daughter like he always had.

Was the song she was playing on the rhythm game familiar to anyone or was it a generic rhythm game song? To me it almost sounded like a sped-up version of Baby Sweet Berry Love(ED from Henneko). With the little nods here and there to different series I wouldn't be surprised.

Also love the little things they change up, like going to WcDonalds and her headphones being deats by bre. :3:

The best part for me was that despite having read it already I completely forgot about Yuu mentioning her boyfriend and Tomoko's reaction to that in this episode so I somehow ended up getting blindsided by the same event twice.

Aw man this episode ended with Tomoko just getting poo poo on. :(

I was actually all :unsmith: when it seemed like her friend is actually *still* maybe her friend on the inside and willing to hang out with her, but then the revelation that the only reason she's doing so is because of ~relationship troubles~ and otherwise hasn't at all kept in contact on off days and probably won't otherwise give her the time of day is just depressingly unfair. :smith:

Though the manga picture made her happy, even if it was probably the dude phoning it in. :unsmith:

For the inexperienced, throwing up because you overate, which is what I assume the cause this episode to be, is extremely painful and feels extremely debilitating.

e: I haven't read the manga yet, so I don't know if she sees her friend more after this or not, its less depressing if so.

In the manga

As Yuu said she would like to get together again and they have done so but it's rare and does not happen too often. They mainly stay in touch through text messages.

Yeah, with the way they're jumping all over the place manga wise, any event can happen at any time. since Yu is a main character according to the anime website, they'll probably work all her appearances into each episode.

Spoilering just in case. It's 自粛("jishuku", basically "self-control, self-restraint"). It kind of surprises me that you managed to figure out the harder kanji first. haha

(and can't post for 6 years!)

By the way, the big dark circles under this family's eyes are called "allergic shiners" and while they can be caused by many different things, they're definitely genetic and usually stem from a combination of stress or lack of sleep, diet, excessive sodium intake, and autoimmune reactions. I have huge shiner orbs under my eyes and they are largely a result of having spent most of my life not realizing I had celiac's disease/gluten intolerance and consuming massive amounts of gluten daily since I was a child. The stress and lack of sleep that resulted for childhood-early adulthood from being constantly sick all the time definitely permanently engraved them under my eyes, even if I got significantly healthier and happier in my 20's having since gone gluten free.

here's an example ^^^

Written before saw below reply:
Try Googling "Watamote Yamcha" or time stamp 11:44. I found another one that looks similar at 11:29, but the second character there looks the the kanji for heavy (重). Even though the first character looks the same and is much larger I still can't make it out. I hope it winds up being something either extremely obscure used only in Unicode, or drawn really sloppily in an unorthodox style. :(

Aku posted:

Oh, I guess I have a (Partial?) answer.

The SECOND one is harder? Not when 自 is drawn that way! (Guess it was the unorthodox one..) I would never have guessed that one in a million years with the lines separated like that. Even the Redfinch calligraphy depiction isn't torn that far apart! Is there some kind of "lazy scrawled kanji" dictionary I'm supposed to have been studying alongside the SANE versions? I mean look at it! The first and sixth strokes look like they're part of the second stroke! That's.. that's not fair! :gonk:

I guess the second (Well first actually) one at 11:29 is 自重? I'm not sure how the translation I saw got "Censored" from either of those unless they were using some simplified localization (Or if it's some obscure informal usage.) Makes me wonder if I'm missing a subtle joke since they [the original] changed it after the first time despite them both having very similar meanings.

Self-regulated. It's used to mean that they voluntarily chose to censor the content (a fairly common thing in Japan) but the closest Western analogy is just "censored" unless you want to write a wall of TL notes explaining it. I remember something similar coming up in one episode of Ixion Saga as a joke.

This episode really jumped around for content. If you haven't already, abandon any attempt at reading the manga alongside the series. They even made some original content for the anime.

E:Also, now that I think about it the umbrella that the boys give her in chapter 5 was the one that she had in chapter 23, so where did it come from? :iiam:.

Just saw the simulcast on Crunchyroll. Watamote is looking to be fairly consistent and I guess where they pick and choose which chapters to air has a lot to do with it. I didn't read all of the chapters so a good bunch was fairly new to me.

The dialogue between Tomoko and Tomoki was great in a 'I saw this in a manga so this is what you're thinking' kind of way. But man is her shirt at the 20 min mark the :smith:est shirt.

e: I forgot the part where she raged about the umbrella. Probably because I knew people who did that and it was just as freaky as it was depicted here.

Episode 3: I'm really quite fond of the over-the-top way they're adapting much of this material. The scene where she thinks someone stole her umbrella was hilarious.

Hey look, it took only three episodes to reach a scene that where I had to literally look away from the screen in shame, when she's under the awning with the boys. This show is going to be the death of me I swear.

I don't get how everyone is sympathetic to this character, everytime I start to feel sorry for her she kind of acts like a prick and then I feel bad just for feeling bad for her.

She reminds me of David Brent, she wants to be popular but instead shes just kind of a self centered jerk. It's really just cringe inducing comedy.

She should, but she doesn't. Her family never taught her social skills and she has some obvious untreated anxiety issues that she has had for a long time.

I'm not saying that she's blameless, part of what makes her a great character is how she sabotages herself, but she was never taught how not to do that. What makes David Brent a great character is that he obviously had basic skills like this at one point, and then completely lost them the moment a camera was pointed at him. This is a little different!

Although I probably shouldn't talk, as I empathise with David Brent as well :v:

That's a big part of the appeal, really. She's not unpopular because of some cutesy-endearing awkwardness; she actually is an unpleasant person. You can sympathise with her crushing loneliness, but also laugh at things going badly for her, 'cause it has this slapstick quality.
