The Civil War scenario seems really interesting so far. I have to go to bed unfortunately, and only get to play about 10 minutes of it, but, the cool thing to me is, that the game starts centered on Fort Monroe if you play the Union. I live within walking distance of the Fort, and the game is close enough scale that I can see where my house would be, and the little peninsula I live on. The units for the scenario all, primea facea, seem to be balanced against each other as well. Only time will tell. Also does a cool thing where they introduce manpower as a limited resource, a la paradox world conquest games.

Rascyc posted:Unsurprisingly they closed off the instant selling of luxuries and embassies to the AI for easy gold in the early game. They all now require declaration of friendship for lump sum trades. You can do gold per turn without them but everyone makes zero money at the start so that's non-ideal. Kind of a interesting way of addressing that AI loop hole in the early game. I'm curious to see what viable deity strategies arise when changes like this have been made. I can't imagine getting a strong enough early game rolling without some AI abuse.

Yet at the same time, with that perfect ring of 5 floodplain wheat and 1 sheep with a blank spot in the middle it's hard to resist filling up the empty floodplain. With all the fog still around it's hard to be sure where the best spot is, but settling in that empty patch is perfect access to all the visible resources. If you settle on the hill, that's going to push a lot of it further out and bottleneck your growth according to how fast your borders can expand. Settling on the flood plain also allows three pastures instead of two, which makes Stables more attractive as an investment (plus the +1 food at Fertilizers, IIRC). The usual question of short-term gains versus long-term benefits. Unless you're worried about early rushes (i.e. you're on a high difficulty level), I'd say go with the flood plain. With the way the rivers and hills are laid out, you have a very defensible area with a standard archer army.

I don't really care much about having to wait a while for my key from GMG but it makes me wonder what the hell is the point in pre-ordering if you don't get the game as soon as it is released. I was under the impression that getting it the moment it was released is THE point of pre-ordering.

It does, because Statue of Zeus is the Wonder for the Honor tree.

Playing as Venice, I just realized that the Merchant of Venice buys city states with his own gold. You don't pay anything. This is amazing.

I'm waiting on my key so I haven't played but do you need open borders? I imagine the unit can't go there unless you do.

Steam has to attempt to install all relevant DX versions. It's why you can install a game from 10 years ago and still have to wait for it.
