Justice's DVNO video is a spot on love letter to 80s video and commerical nostalgia. It's absolutely brilliant how many styles they imitate in it.

Berries That Burn
Swimming Underground is Mary Woronov's autobiography that focuses for the most part on her time in Andy Warhol's inner circle. It's 70s Mod stuff, so kind of a precuror to the "Neon Underground" you're talking about which is more of an 80s thing. The earlier part of the book includes meeting Nico and the Velvet Underground which is probably what jogged my memory due to the thread title.

One particular scene that sticks in my mind is when she is locked up an apartment with the other Mole People, making beaded necklaces and doing drugs and all that. For days. The uncomfortable feeling of sitting at Warhol's table at The Factory, fear of being tossed out into the daylight land of normality that is no longer familiar, etc. If you like Pulp Fiction and Trainspotting it might be for you. Hope this fits the scope of the thread!

This is shameless plugging, but after watching and listening to the recommendations in this thread, the game I worked on for Ludum Dare last weekend has a hefty streak of neon underground and retrofuture running through it, the main character especially.

Telefuture just released a new compilation called RAGE, featuring tracks by Perturbator, Carpenter Brut, Protector 101, Monomer, Highway Superstar, and me, Arcade High. :)

The compilation is actually helping to raise money for my senior thesis project at film school which is a neon-soaked 80s short action film. You can find out more info on it here: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/rage-a-short-film/x/291174

Oh yeah, and I'm having a week long sale for all of my music on Bandcamp. Everything is pay what you want until next Tuesday!

Yeah, M.O.O.N. or Scattle. For ease of access you might just want to pick up the Hotline Miami soundtrack as it has a good portion of songs like that one and a lot of songs similar to it but faster/more energetic.

Other old stuff:

Of course, that '90s game Sin that was TOTALLY eclipsed by Half-Life comes to mind.

Also retro but MC900's "Falling Elevators."

Ed: And maybe some of the feel in Tsukerman's Liquid Sky. He's just announced that he's doing a remake of it, or something. Not exactly clear if it's a reboot or just a 30-year anniversary edition or something.

If you like 80s/90s late night movies spliced together with an amazingly perfect Neon Underground soundtrack, give SKINEMAX a whirl:

http://vimeo.com/29999445

Its sequel MEMOREX is more of the same (awesome), but more 90s Neon TV hedonism.

Smash FM/TV, the guy(s) who put these together, also has put together an awesome 10-hour, Kurt Russell-themed music mix that is some of the best mash-up work I've heard..think The Avalanches (he? they? even sample them at one point). Link here: http://www.percussionlab.com/sets?list=tag&tag=sparkle%20motion

If you love the Neon Underground aesthetic, you owe it to yourself to check out at Skinemax. You won't be disappointed.

I'm loving this thread so far, really cool input from everyone so far. I am a little lost where to draw the line between true 80's, cyberpunk and neonpunk (which is a great word to describe the aesthetic). I just watched Vamp and the colors were fantastic. I am looking forward to watching Beyond the Black Rainbow as I enjoyed The House of the Devil immensely despite a weak ending (which reminds me, does Robocop 2 with the neon glow in the dark graffiti advertising pink glowing "Nuke" count for something?)

Can horror movies also breach the line between reality and the neon? From Beyond is an awesome movie by the same guy (Stuarts Gordon) who did Re-Animator which has familiar color aesthetics especially when opening the gateway to the so-named Beyond.
