I can readily admit I kinda liked the Apache missions in ACAH. :kiddo: But mostly because they worked really well with mouse and keyboard.
Which was one of the positive things I noticed with ACAH on the PC, the controls worked really well and I kinda enjoyed switching from Joystick for the dogfighting to Mouse and Keyboard for the Helo and Gunship sections without any real issues at all.

Of course the sensitivity settings on the other hand were awful, either too much or too little with nothing in between. Which felt a bit problematic at times.

There was a game for the PS2 I used to scratch my Ace Combat itch once upon a time called Airforce Delta Strike. It's basically the story of Gundam but with airplanes and it didn't play as well as AC but it did some neat things. You could fly propeller aircraft all the way through awesome space age aircraft and the final missions actually took place in space with space physics. It was pretty neat but also hard as balls. It also had some neat mission set pieces like shooting parachuting tanks before they hit the ground to pound your troops or a mission where a space elevator takes a hit and you have to destroy the debris in the high atmosphere before it crashes to earth.

That said, overall it's not an amazing game but definitely worth a look for how different it was for its time.

I googled it, and apparently Airforce Delta Strike is the American(?) name for Deadly Skies III. It was a really bizarre game. You could unlock the Vic Viper from Gradius as I remember, absolutely loads of planes to choose from too.

That's the ship from Galaxian^3 (one of my favorite Namco games), which apparently is set in the exact same universe as AC3. Namco has this crazy rear end timeline involving the "United Galaxy Space Force" (UGSF) which includes AC3, Galaxian^3, Galaga, even Dig Dug of all games, and I have no idea how they all tie together because the website is in Japanese: http://ugsf-series.com/

Seeing that teaser, could it mean we get two protagonists, one on each side of the conflict?

I like where this is going. It might not end up being Strangereal, but it sure as hell isn't real world. Definitely curious.

The heavens split like the storyines branching in AC3, the sky split into earth and space missions like in AC3 goddamnit I want AC3 and will keep grasping at straws no matter what

They've slowly introduced more branching mission trees in some of the games (I remember one set in AC5 in particular), maybe they are going all out on that concept.

I would officially lose my poo poo if this were the case. I'd definitely like to see some science-fictiony stuff, and any orbital / space combat would be more than welcome, and anything to make the series less linear after AC:AH would be welcome, too.

So tempted to dig out my PSX and play Electrosphere right now. I managed to get the disc for $2 from a pawn shop, and I'm just worried it won't actually work.

My guess......a more realistic approach is 2 factions/2 playable campaigns.
I really doubt they'd be crazy enough to pull a dimensional rift or whatever.
I also doubt they'd pull an AC3 since it didnt perform well.

GUNDAM!!!
I picked up Project Sylpheed at Gamestop to quell the itch a bit. Got it for 2 bucks and its a hell of a game at that price. Ace Combat in space is pretty accurate. The gameplay is fun, if a little hard at times; it's difficult to see objectives with all the laser spam going on and you are really not armed to take on battleships in the early stages. The cutscenes are weird but tolerable.

movax posted:

Yeah, the one I have is for the PS2. It's got kind of anime cutouts for the characters and you choose which pilot to fly which sort of changes the story a bit. The overarching plot is that space colonies are tired of earth and are messing it up or something like that. Lots of terrible voice acting and just boatloads of stages to fly. The flight mechanics are a little stiffer compared to AC but not bad. Dodging missiles takes more than a hard bank though, as I found out several times :v:

So this thread has made me jones for some PS2 Ace Combat. I have physical copies of 4 and 5, but my copy of 5 is unplayable due to freezing and I've never played Zero before.

My question is do I:

Take my chances trying to get physical copies of 5 and Zero from Ebay/Gamestop/etc, including the risk that it might be my PS2 dying that's causing the freezes?
or
Go get a PS2-esque Gamepad and an emulator?

I have very little experience with emulators and I don't think I want to play the games without a similar controller, so I'm a bit stuck.

I think that's the issue with AC5 meanwhile AC4 has a slew of other issues. No idea about ACZ though.
But yeah, you are just better of trying to get physical copies since emulating AC games just won't work.

I've only had the chance to play through 5 1½ times and I almost wish they would work on emulators since I really lack the funds to go up and buy a PS2 and hunt down the games on a disc.

Found a copy of AC5 at a Gamestop on my way home (after checking their website and going ~15 minutes out of the way), worked like a dream. Thanks for the help.

I started it up by playing Arcade mode, good god drat that second to last mission in the 4th branch is hard. So many planes to kill, so little time to shake the Su-37s that are glued to your rear end.

I really should get my rear end in gear and finish ACAH just so I can give the thought of LP a real consideration.
I have the biggest urge to do separate videos about various planes like what RI did for his Crimson Skies LP but I have huge bouts of stage fright regarding that. :ohdear:
