Wing Chun (1994)

Just saw this on Netflix streaming. What a wonderful surprise this movie was! (FYI: The poster image in Netflix is for the wrong film.)
Technically a little late for the period outlined in the OP, but of the same spirit.

Michelle Yeoh in her prime, just dominating the screen with astonishing poise and high-quality beatdowns.
Donnie Yen just starting out as a eager, young goofball.
Yuen Woo Ping directing in his 90's heydey (same year as Fist of Legend).
A really funny supporting role from Kingdom Yuen. A lot of the broad comedy in HK films tends to leave me pretty cold, but something about the performances, editing, and writing really sold the humor for me.

This movie is also gently sexy and queer as helllll. Not as totally transgressive as it could be, but pretty amazing for its time. The ending fight in has a great thematic action beat/gender double entendre that literally had me clapping.

I'm sure I'm overselling this (it is a pretty silly film), but I found it utterly charming.

P.S:. Someone wrote a scholarly monograph about the film: http://books.google.com/books?id=Ur61t2MgqAAC
My library has eBook access and I am reading it right now! It's pretty good!

I can also recommend the Japanese TV series Fight! Dragon, starring Yasuaki Kurata, who has had some memorable roles playing "noble" antagonists in HK films like Heroes of the East and Fist of Legend.

It is basically a tokusatsu show with over-the-top street fights instead of giant monsters. Here's the opening.

I'm rather fascinated by the fact that all these obscure (at least to western eyes) hong kong action movies from the 80s and 90s are basically plastered up on youtube. I've had a good opportunity to blow my brains out with some of the craziest poo poo I've ever seen.

One movie that simultaneously impressed and horrified me was "Iron Angels." A movie that starts out as a light hearted action comedy that all of a sudden explodes into this ultra violent and almost disturbingly dark movie that has people getting outright murdered in terrible ways.

The whole thing builds to a vicious fight scene between Moon Lee and Yukari Oshima that is quite the site to see. A bit of wire work is involved but these two women are absolute martial arts beasts.

Trailer: http://youtu.be/HHANUdGtZ4A
End Fight Scene: http://youtu.be/XT3MlF9Zua0
Full Movie (really awful English dub): http://youtu.be/S_bnmb_OIM0

I finally got around to this after bookmarking it all these months ago. Pretty great! Thanks for posting the original end fight scene, it is cut to poo poo in the dub.

Jumping around in related videos, I found Angel Terminators 2, which is amaaaazing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZBfUUNAHL4. Moon Lee and Yukari Oshima as childhood friends getting mixed up with gangsters, with the excellent Sibelle Hu as a cop so on the edge she puts Dirty Harry to shame. I love how careful the director is to show that despite how much the male "hero" characters try to help, they are just completely outclassed by their female comrades. Excellent final shot, too.

Those leggings were fantastic. I think I actually clapped when I realized what was printed on them.

He is trying to play way too young in Special ID, but I actually really enjoyed his goofball performance in that. The couple of scenes where he is pounding on one guy while taunting a bunch of other guys are just delightful.

Taoism Drunkard, or "Drunken Wu Tang" as I knew it, was a college staple for my friends. Such a delight (with some good fights, unsurprisingly).

I just caught The Avenging Eagle (1978) on Netflix and dug the hell out of it. It's shot like a Technicolor musical and the relationship between the two leads (Ti Lung and Alexander Fu Sheng) is amazing. Great villain, brutal and dynamic fights, cool weapons. Super sad that we lost Fu Sheng as early as we did; he was so good.

This could be an interesting disaster: Yuen Woo-ping, Tsui Hark remake Miracle Fighters

And after seeing a baby get bull-whipped out of a movie with efficient speed you should watch "Flying Dagger" for something a little more light hearted

Thanks for these recommends; it was nice to see some solid 90s wuxia that was new to me.

Just watched a breathlessly-paced and totally excessive Taiwanese picture called Red Pirate from 1997 (or at least released then).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W82eeZsAE2g

Notables:
+Stars Jonathan Ke Quan, of Goonies and Temple of Doom fame (who is a shockingly decent onscreen fighter and stunt performer).
+ 4 (maybe 5!) awesome female fighters.
+A big pirate party that includes a guy sticking a milk snake's head down his throat, then pulling it out and pouring beer on it.
+Bigger ending action scene body count than Commando.
