Tharizdun posted:Recently, I got a chance to show Master of the Flying Guillotine to some friends, who all loved it, but I was taken aback by how bad it looked on DVD. Growing up, it was just accepted that OTA broadcast looked bad (especially on our ancient 80s TVs), but no I guess the movies were just filmed on that grainy a stock, with very little attention paid to focusing on a particular depth of field. I have the 2 disc anniversary edition DVD and there's a disclaimer before the movie starts that says the print was heavily damaged and this was basically the best they could do with it.

I've been ripping Bey Logan's Dragon Dynasty commentaries from my DVDs so I can listen to them on my MP3 player at work. I wish he had stuck with DD a little longer, I'd love to hear his commentary on Blood Brothers, Executioners from Shaolin, etc.

I don't think they had a choice with the limited budget to get an actual Indian guy to play that part. And without blackface Chinese guy we would never have Dhalsim from Street Fighter 2. My favorite part of MotFG is the fact that the Japanese samurai is played by the guy who played Black Betty in Kung Pow: Enter The Fist.

Miracle Fighters is one of my favorites. But I think I like Shaolin Drunkard a little more. edit--> Where can I get Miracle Fighters cheap on DVD? I've been looking to pick that one up. Best I can find is $14 used on Amazon. Boinks fucked around with this message at 20:57 on Jun 1, 2014 |

Humbug Scoolbus posted:How can you not like the final competition in Miracle Fighters more? The different techniques for getting the key, crossing the bridge and the stop motion titan. Also quick change martial arts, creating chicken noodles, and summoning the rain storm...Drunkard is fantastic but Miracle Fighters is sublime. Miracle is a better movie I'll give you that. I guess I just have a soft spot for drinking in kung fu movies.

I watched Shaolin Prince (1982) over the weekend and that had a lot of wire work in it too. I really enjoyed it, especially the 3 mad monks and the giant diagram of monks near the end.

Does anyone own this DVD of Taoism Drunkard? The cover says widescreen but the specs on Amazon and other sites say it's 1:1.33, so which is it?

THE YOUNG MASTER (out of a 5-DVD box set I grabbed solely for FANTASY MISSION FORCE) is pretty worthless, and practically Jackie-free. FEARLESS HYENA on the other had was a blast. Once you got past Jackie's dubbed-accent, which made him sound like a member of Herman's Hermits. Young Master is ok. Are you sure you didn't see Young Tiger by mistake? Young Master ends with this hilarious image:

G-III posted:When I thought I couldn't find anything as mind breaking as Descendant of the Sun, I ended up getting my hands on a copy of the "Holy Flame of the Martial World." These early 80s shaw brothers super powered kung fu movies are just insane. I can't tell if I'm supposed to watch these types of movies sober to avoid permanent brain damage or if I'm supposed to watch these completely blitzed out on drugs so that they make sense: I just watched my DVD of that the other day. Loved the echoes and the beams that shoot the skeletons out of people's bodies. Also watched Brothers Five last night. What great fight scenes! They reminded me of Dynasty Warriors.

I don't recognize any of the titles as the usual "big name must-see" ones that usually pop up on lists and such. 3 Chang Cheh films and 2 Lau Kar-leung films (top tier Kung Fu directors, if you see either of these names and a Shaw Brothers logo you're in for a treat). I'd say Executioners from Shaolin and Golden Swallow are top 20 classics.

I have the Wu Tang copy, they spell the name of the movie wrong on the side and nothing on either cover is in the movie. However it is in widescreen! It's also only a few bucks used on Amazon.

This was probably a late 70s film, as it was broadcast in the early 80s during the Martial Arts movie block that was shown on Saturday afternoons when I was growing up. I believe this is Five Fingers of Death AKA Shaolin Martial Arts from 1974. You can watch it for free on IMDB: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071619/ Not to be confused with Five Fingers of Death AKA King Boxer from 1972, which was the first kung fu movie to come to the US and launched the whole 70's kung fu craze.
