Recently, I got a chance to show Master of the Flying Guillotine to some friends, who all loved it, but I was taken aback by how bad it looked on DVD. Growing up, it was just accepted that OTA broadcast looked bad (especially on our ancient 80s TVs), but no I guess the movies were just filmed on that grainy a stock, with very little attention paid to focusing on a particular depth of field.

Has there ever been any attempt to salvage these films, or are the only copies fifth-generation garbage prints?

I have the 2 disc anniversary edition DVD and there's a disclaimer before the movie starts that says the print was heavily damaged and this was basically the best they could do with it.

I've been ripping Bey Logan's Dragon Dynasty commentaries from my DVDs so I can listen to them on my MP3 player at work. I wish he had stuck with DD a little longer, I'd love to hear his commentary on Blood Brothers, Executioners from Shaolin, etc.

I don't think they had a choice with the limited budget to get an actual Indian guy to play that part. And without blackface Chinese guy we would never have Dhalsim from Street Fighter 2.

My favorite part of MotFG is the fact that the Japanese samurai is played by the guy who played Black Betty in Kung Pow: Enter The Fist.

Picked up some DVDs at the dirt mall this weekend:

Ashes of Time Redux $2 - A Wong Kar Wai film
Treasure Hunt $2 - Early Chow Yun Fat film co-staring Gordon Liu
Mr. Nice Guy $3 sealed - Jackie Chan
Dragon Heat $7 sealed - Dragon Dynasty release/ Sammo Hung, Maggie Q

I haven't seen any of these yet so I'm looking forward to checking them out.

On that note I now have 43/58 Dragon Dynasty releases :woop:

Miracle Fighters is one of my favorites. But I think I like Shaolin Drunkard a little more.

edit--> Where can I get Miracle Fighters cheap on DVD? I've been looking to pick that one up. Best I can find is $14 used on Amazon.

Watch the One Armed Swordsman films next.

Then if you can't get enough of cripples watch Return of the Five Deadly Venoms A.K.A. Crippled Avengers.

And if you're really desperate for some more cripple action watch The Crippled Masters.

Got around to watching a few early Jackie Chan flicks this week. THE YOUNG MASTER (out of a 5-DVD box set I grabbed solely for FANTASY MISSION FORCE) is pretty worthless, and practically Jackie-free. FEARLESS HYENA on the other had was a blast. Once you got past Jackie's dubbed-accent, which made him sound like a member of Herman's Hermits.

Young Master is ok. Are you sure you didn't see Young Tiger by mistake?

When I thought I couldn't find anything as mind breaking as Descendant of the Sun, I ended up getting my hands on a copy of the "Holy Flame of the Martial World." These early 80s shaw brothers super powered kung fu movies are just insane. I can't tell if I'm supposed to watch these types of movies sober to avoid permanent brain damage or if I'm supposed to watch these completely blitzed out on drugs so that they make sense:

I just watched my DVD of that the other day. Loved the echoes and the beams that shoot the skeletons out of people's bodies.

If you haven't bought these yet they're probably the best deals out there for kung fu DVDs (all single disc versions with fantastic transfers):

3 Chang Cheh films and 2 Lau Kar-leung films (top tier Kung Fu directors, if you see either of these names and a Shaw Brothers logo you're in for a treat).

I'd say Executioners from Shaolin and Golden Swallow are top 20 classics.

I mean, I think I saw it. I may just have had some wild fever dream involving kung-fu. Either seem equally possible.

All joking aside, that was a helluva ride. Out of curiosity, were Lady Omei/Ermei, Monster, Phantom, and most of the other sifu characters meant to be anyone in particular? Like, what I mean is, the way the film handled them and presented them, I got sort of the impression they were kind of archetypal kung-fu characters like Pai Mei in many films, and whatnot.

If you haven't seen Miracle Fighters, Shaolin Drunkard and Taoism Drunkard watch those next. They put Holy Flame of the Martial World to shame.

I think the Wu Tang DVD is your only option unless there's an import copy I'm not aware of.

I have the Wu Tang copy, they spell the name of the movie wrong on the side and nothing on either cover is in the movie. However it is in widescreen! It's also only a few bucks used on Amazon.

Can I use the collective knowledge here to help me find a particular movie. This was probably a late 70s film, as it was broadcast in the early 80s during the Martial Arts movie block that was shown on Saturday afternoons when I was growing up.

The premise I recall was a revenge movie with the protagonist getting beat down early and then being taken under the wing of a sage old fighter who taught him how to just use his index/middle finger as a weapon. He spent a good portion of the training flicking these two fingers at a large bell in a courtyard until he could make it ring. The end fight then has him using this skill to kill the main bad guy.

He had a buddy in the movie who helped him if I recall who declared any thing he could touch a weapon. And he used pieces of a chair to kick rear end during the final fight. This is now 30 years of memory I am drawing on so best I can do. I have looked for this for years but never have found out what it was called.

I believe this is Five Fingers of Death AKA Shaolin Martial Arts from 1974. You can watch it for free on IMDB:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071619/

Not to be confused with Five Fingers of Death AKA King Boxer from 1972, which was the first kung fu movie to come to the US and launched the whole 70's kung fu craze.
