I've been getting into black and white photograpy a lot lately. I prefer it to color now, honestly. Perhaps it's just a phase... Anyway, have some of my favorite shots thus far. Also, are there any definitive books or articles about the art of black and white photography besides this one? Oh, and what does everyone use for color to B&W conversion (for those who shoot digital)? I'm just curious. There has to be an incredibly dense layer of Silicon Nitride or some kind of passivation layer protecting the actual detector structures underneath.

I, too, would like to know what most people do to convert their color photos to B&W. For me I just use the built in mechanism within Aperture, which also lets me pick a color filter as well. It's quick and helpful, but I know there's other plugins that also do B&W conversion. Are they worth it? Hey. So I've been reading through some photography books as of late, and I found a fantastic one about black and white photography. It covers digital and film related techniques, as well as the "science" of black and white photography. It's a very entertaining and informative read. It's also a fairly recent book. It covers techniques in Photoshop CS6 among other applications (like Nik products). It's called From Oz to Kansas: Almost Every Black and White Conversion Technique Known to Man. It's a bit expensive, but it's worth it. Give it a skim at least. poo poo, go to your local library and get it if you can.

Are they worth it? Import .RAF file Convert to B/W button in LR5 to tinker with -or- Export to Silver EFEX Pro2 or whatever version was part of the Niksoft Google Bundle. Silver EFEX does what you can do in LR5. I find that SilverEfex cuts my time down because I can run with their preset with my tinkering and import back into LR5 for a final edit. Its a good shortcut for me, YMMV. There is a trial for you to play with. http://www.niksoftware.com/nikcollection/usa/silverefexpro.html
