I am a little heartbroken that they changed up Food Fight but whatever I can always run the one in the Stuffer Shack after the one in the diner I guess.

There are quite a few really good old novels in the SR line, but also some of the absolute worst fiction I've ever read. Some of the novels were written by people I am convinced had never seen the Shadowrun rules or setting, but just changed some names and details around - I forget which one it is, but it has a cybered up vampire. All of the books by Lisa Smedman are an insult to fiction writing as well.

"Striper Assassin" is one of the worst things I have ever read, and I read that lovely Rifts novel that was literally missing entire chapters, please go to hell Nyx Smith. :colbert:

Seriously who writes an entire novel in third person present tense.

"Into The Shadows" was a pretty rad series of short stories though. I think it takes place in 2050 but the ideas in it are helpful for anyone running Shadowrun.

While I think there's something to be said for "your weird orichalcum murder implement raises a lot of eyebrows wherever it goes because of how weird it is, even in 2070," that only survives so long against the math of it all. I love Shadowrun's setting as much as I love Exalted's, and like Exalted, its a drat shame that its system is just as broken, stupid, and backward.

I love the Shadowrun setting to death but I'd rather use something like Leverage or FAE to run it because Shadowrun's rules are basically a mess. In that spirit, I've got two questions.

1. What are the coolest books fluffwise? I plan on throwing out all the numbers and bolting it all together so for the most part edition doesn't really matter, I just want rad ideas and things to read about. In print, out of print, don't really care. Something in the spirit of the Sixth World Almanac or Dunkelzahn's will would be awesome.
Hell, I'm even OK with reading through some of the novels, Into The Shadows was surprisingly readable outside of the story about the weretiger murder stripper written entirely in the present tense.

2. Is there an easy way to get a new player up to speed on Shadowrun without making them read through an entire grimoire of timelines? I'm OK with typing up a little one-page "I'M SHADOWRUN, AND YOU CAN TOO!" myself, but if there's already a Shadowrun Abridged I'd love to hear about it.

I think Hackers has that perfect naive pink mohawk attitude to throw onto a couple of NPC decker/technomancer kids for your players to put up with.
