Captain Mog posted:Maybe Mary Sue was the wrong term to use. But they are almost always idealized, nigh-perfect characters who undergo persecution and hardships but eventually wind up victorious in the end. Kurt as a bullied gay male who is talented at everything he does (talented enough to begin writing for an NYC upscale fashion magazine on the spot), Lana as a persecuted gay woman in the 60's who escapes an insane asylum and becomes a talented journalist (world-famous and rich in the present day), ect. Considering that until pretty recently LGBT characters Did Not Get Happy Endings in film and literature, I'm going to go ahead and say that the fact that Murphy's gay characters frequently (but not always - just look at Quinto's character in S1) have happy endings and are held up as strong, successful people is pretty loving important and awesome.

So much symbology in this teaser it's ridiculous! There was an albino minotaur on the front porch dead; in on-set candids there's an albino security guard with Frances Conroy('s character). White cat. Floating girls.

OmegaBR posted:But they really fell into the LOST trap of building up too much without having a clear ending in mind, and then having the burden of wrapping it all up. Some very huge characters and plot points fizzled and were resolved much too simply. The devil being killed by falling over a railing, Arden killing the mutants and then himself, the brief mention of Alma's death, the brief mention of the Monsignor's suicide, the aliens dropping by to take Kit - it all got resolved WAY too easily after weeks of us wondering just how the hell all of this would come to a head. It all took a backseat to Lana in the end. I was under the impression the devil jumped into the Monsignor, causing him to become the massive rear end in a top hat he was.

Random question, do we know if the witches are going to age normally, or live for a really long time? I kinda like the idea of seeing Jessica Lange as both the Victorian and modern versions of the same character. Seeing them play with that and how the characters change with the times could be really neat. I remember them saying something about the witches fleeing Salem, but it wasn't really clear if they meant these specific witches or just their ancestors or whatever.

I think you're reading into it-- maybe thinking of The Exorcist, subconsciously. I think I need to watch the scene again, but IIRC (which I probably don't) Sister Mary Eunice briefly regained control of her body and either jumped off the railing to free herself, or asked the Monsignor to push her over for the same reason.

Jude looks kind of like just a generic nun. It'd actually be pretty hard to do most of the characters this season, I think. I can't remember many standout costumes or imagery other than Bloody Face. But you could be Jude with a regular nun costume by leaving the habit open and having on a red slip/one of her snazzy lounge singer dresses underneath, I think.

Evan Peters is playing a frat boy Part of me thinks that will be hilarious, but a little disappointing since it's usually an annoying character type. It also looks like they're going to repeat the relationship between Evan and Taissa's characters, which I'm actually cool with because I thought the two had a good dynamic in the first season.

I had watched the first episode from the first season a long time ago and never felt grabbed by it, but due to boredom and having the rest of the season available to me I rewatched it, it clicked, and then I devoured the entire thing. And then I did the same for the second season, as well. When I started watching the second season I was kinda thrown when the same actors came up for different characters, but after the first twenty minutes I just went with it and it ended up wonderfully fine. Holy poo poo, this had some seriously disturbing (seriously) moments/arcs (enjoyably so) and I thought the whole thing was really well written. I loved it. I am really looking forward to the third season. Thank you thread for sparking my interest again.

I can't wait for season three to start. I've got my viewing group prepped and ready for more horrible imagery. But you can't make me give up my "Dominique" it's just too chipper to hear whenever someone calls. Dominique, nique Nique s'en allait tout simplement Routier pauvre et chantant En tous chemins, en tous lieux Il ne parle que du bon Dieu Il ne parle que du bon Dieu Ahahaha oh American Horror Story, what will you think of next?

So is it safe to say the "official" poster, the one that eventually adorns the DVD cover, is the snake slithering through the three mouths, in the same vein as rubber man and the crying nun? Also, if Murder House's theme was infidelity, and Asylum's was sanity, what will Coven's be? Legacy?

escape artist posted:You guys seem to be forgetting how Lana lied about her relationship with Clea Duvall's character. She fudged a lot of details in the book to make it sell better. She could've been a pioneer for LGBT people in that time period, but she chose not to, because money and fame were more important. She was a flawed character. Kit had to beg her to go back to fulfill her promise of doing an exposé on the asylum. Yeah, the latter part of the season Lana started showing her true colors and they weren't very pretty.

Emmy harvest was about the same as last year- one major award (James Cromwell for Outstanding Supporting Actor) and one lower-tier award (Outstanding Sound Editing). Jessica Lange lost to Laura Linney on The Big C: Heareafter. Sarah Paulson lost to Ellen Burstyn on Political Animals. The series as a whole lost to Behind the Candelabra.
