But normally you would expect a new character to get some kind of... introduction. Like, how did Sonic and crew meet him? What's his backstory? What are his motivations? It doesn't have to be much (this is Sonic after all) but right now Big has more involvement in canon than Silver does. He's in this weird limbo where everything that connected him to the main cast was erased from continuity, but they still know him somehow. It could be easily fixed - just clarify his current connection to, say, Blaze (and then clarify Blaze's backstory) and presto, he's a friend of a friend. It's just that nobody seems to have done this yet.
