Finally, a show starring people who are missing teeth. A great excuse to buy rum.

Some of the CGI shots look so amazingly bad that I can't help but wonder if it's actually real? Any water more than a few yards from the ship just looks like something from a playstation 2 video game. I guess that means it's good CGI? I don't know. I like the opening credits but the song feels flat, I was hoping it was just the preview video quality doing it in that sneak peak but it seems to be in the show. I don't think it's fair to compare it to Spartacus just because they're both on Starz but I did like it a lot more than Spartacus' first episode (which really isn't even a compliment). It was probably way too many characters to introduce in a first episode though, going to take a few episodes before I can remember more than a couple of names at best.

The central conflict was set up really well I thought. Everyone has a different angle and none of it seems particularly contrived other than the gigantic gold ship made of gold carrying all the gold which, I mean, isn't all that bad as far as "macguffin in a pirate show" goes. I'm also glad they killed off the most boring character right in the pilot.

Digging it. Why? Because no matter how old I get I'm still a loving Lost Boy, and stories about pirates still get me the same way Treasure Island got me when I was a little kid. The way the Spartacus was to 300, Black Sails is to Master and Commander, which is pretty much what I was hoping for: over-the-top violence, boobs, lesbians, and back-stabbing politics. We'll see where it goes, but I think the pilot's a pretty good foundation for awesomeness later on. And I'm vaguely curious to see if it's as progressive as Spartacus was. edit: but Silver and his hair might as well be Jon Snu, which is p. distracting, but whatever Asbury fucked around with this message at 21:37 on Jan 18, 2014 |

Haven't watch it yet. Comparing it to other Starz shows, how would guys say it stands against Davinci's Demon's? It sound like people are liking this a bit better?

This is pretty much exactly how I feel about the show. I think I'd feel more secure in where it would be going if it were the same minds behind it, but I think Starz understood what it was about Spartacus that made it so much more successful than it should have been (I had to come back to it late in the first season, because, you know, I saw the pilot.), so hopefully it goes in the right direction right from the start. Aside from that, John Silver's face has this real Karl Urban quality to it that I just can't shake, and the 'rum, tobacco, and salt air' pirate rasp some of these people have going made my throat raw by the end of the pilot.

Just watched the show last night and it was great. Really looking forward to it. Maybe I was drunk or something but I think I missed the plot at the end. Can someone explain it to me? So Long Jon Silver had the real map the whole time and Pirate Captain guy pretended to find it in order to trick his crew, but in reality he has no idea where the Spanish treasure ship really is? Is that about right?

It's not a completely generic and boring hyper observant trope ridden mess so it's naturally much better than DD. I actually enjoyed watching it instead of just going through it being annoyed which was the complete opposite of 90% of Starz's shows.

The fight on the deck was a Hail Mary to claim dominance and buy himself more time.

I thought it was a decent first episode, my main problem was that there was no one to root for. There should be a reason why we want to follow this crew and have them survive.

Is that about right? Long Jon Silver has the missing pages with the route that the treasure galleon is going to take. Flint has the rest of the log book and can recreate the route but he needs the help of someone who knows how the Spanish works which is why he approached the governor. He'll either have to find the guy in Havana or someone else to map out the voyage if he can't get the pages off Jon Silver.

The show seems promising, but the pilot dragged a bit and would've been better served by introducing some of the more minor characters in the second and third episode instead of jamming them all into the first.

Throwing every single character into the first episode is pretty much what most pilots do. I didn't really mind, and it makes sense that a show would want to introduce everyone in the pilot to try and get as many people as possible to get interested in one of the characters and at least tune into the second episode. As for the actual pilot, I really liked it and look forward to the rest of the season. I liked that Flint wasn't just The Good Pirate but seems to have some pretty selfish motivations. Really curious about what they'll do with the plotline about Silver's schedule page and whether that's going to be a season-long secret or if it's just setup to get Vane chasing after Flint's ship after that prostitute talks to Vane's men about what Silver has.

I really really liked the pilot. Started off a bit slow but then caught up like nuts. Pretty much interested in every character there is. And that fight...awesome. Not Spartacus awesome, but that's a pretty tall order.

Gotta say, I figured I would love this but I dug it way more than I thought I would. Quirky boy Silver weakest point for me so far. His character feels a bit forced right now. Also, Bear McCreary can be hit or miss for me (way more miss these days) but I absolutely love the intro theme and titles. Another reason to dig into this for me is the showrunner of Jericho and first season of Human Target. Tokubetsu fucked around with this message at 22:39 on Jan 20, 2014 |

The ladies in this show are rather bad at acting, not to mention their role is basically porn anyway. Wish they hadn't dragged Stevenson's stories into this and made it a little more believable as (original) period piece. Kind of like Vikings if you know what I mean. pigdog fucked around with this message at 22:47 on Jan 20, 2014 |

Yeah he's great, and the I AM YOUR KING line was an appropriate blend of crazy/charismatic. In the trailer I thought it kind of fell flat but in the context of the full pilot he nailed it.

Tokubetsu posted:Gotta say, I figured I would love this but I dug it way more than I thought I would. Quirky boy Silver weakest point for me so far. His character feels a bit forced right now. The pilot was all about setting up John Silver, when you think about it. It had a cardboard cutout temporary antagonist who went after Flint's power directly, through force, and died because of it. That leaves a big character hole: who is going to be the on-ship thorn in Captain Flint's side? Because the hulking antagonist lost his coup attempt and died quite brutally, it sets up the next guy who fills that role to be an indirect threat to Flint's power: sly and opportunistic. Silver was literally handed a magic piece of paper that gives him power and would undermine Captain Flint's authority just by being revealed to the crew. I hate the word, but that positioning means that Captain Flint and John Silver are about to become "frenemies." Sure, it's hamfisted writing crammed into a pilot, but you've got to admire that setup being made to happen so rapidly. I'm not complaining, through. It's a pirate show with Michael Bay's name slapped all over it. It's gonna probably be dumb and laughably bad, but who cares? Heck, threads about flawed TV shows are so much more fun than nitpicking the slight imperfections in stellar shows like Breaking Bad. Who needs a sensible, cerebral plot when you get to watch a pirate king bash out all 32 of a dude's teeth with a loving cannonball punch? What did this symbolize, what were the nuances and emotional undercurrents of this scene? Well, mostly it symbolized that you do not want to gently caress with that captain.

It's not Transformers because that was Michael Bay's unchecked ego (also giant robots), but Pain & Gain was typical of every other Bay movie he's ever directed. I'm sorry you have a terrible taste in movies? Michael Bay is brilliant, and the Transformer movies - though flawed - have some really interesting stuff going on in them. Gonna wait for a while to see the thread reactions before watching this, I think. Comparing it to Spartacus seems a bit early. Yes, that show had gratuitous tits, dicks, sex and violence, but it had those things for a reason and it was really well written, acted and directed.

I'm mostly amazed how much of the daily life of a pirate they got right. Crewmates medical care is paid for by the ship and control of the ship is normally decided trough democratic means.
