:siren:Simple Thread Rule: DON'T loving SHITPOST. WE'RE HERE TO TALK ABOUT MODS AND BETHESDA BUGS:siren:

:siren:Some Modding Essentials::siren:
-ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP SAVE BEFORE INSTALLING ANY MODS. Long story short, The Creation Engine handles scripts differently from the older versions of Gamebryo, permanently embedding them into a save file. Removal of a script-heavy mod in the middle of a save will lead to broken stuff later on. Backups are important in case you end up not liking the mod, so you can easily revert back.
-Most of us here have a bit of experience troubleshooting a broken mod/game. However we're not mind reading geniuses. So if you have a problem, please be as thorough as possible when explaining the problem, and if possible, include your mod load order so we can look for any incompatibilities.

The Skyrim Nexus: Your main source for Skyrim mods and mod packages. If you can avoid the dumb titty mods and hugbox attitude of the forums, you'll find everything you'll ever need here.

The Steam Workshop: Steam's own mod distribution center. Not as good as the Nexus, but it's a bit easier to manage.Mods that are exclusive to the Steam Workshop are denoted by a :steam: logo in the title.

TES Alliance: Another decent place to get mods. It's got fewer mods, but the atmosphere is definitely friendlier than the Nexus. Some stuff (mostly Trainwiz stuff) is hosted here exclusively.

Skyrim GEMS: This is basically a mega compilation of mods that have been classified as really good. Most of them link back to the Nexus, so think of it as an easier way of looking for mods without dealing with all the nudity mods of the Nexus

SKSE: Pretty much required at this point in time. All major mods use it, and the memory fix that is now included in it is a godsend. This is the only thing you should install directly into your root Skyrim folder (the one in your Steam folder)..Check out this video by Gopher if you're having issues installing it.

Mod Organizer: This is pretty much the mod manager to have. Poweful, easy to manage, and keeps your main Skyrim installation clean so nuking a game is as easy as deleting your MO Profile and starting over. Now comes with an auto sorting feature as well. Here's a beginner's how-to video. If you can't follow the video, here's a STEP Guide on how to use Mod Organizer.

Nexus Mod Manager: This is the Nexus' own mod manager. No reason to really use this unless Mod Organizer confuses and scares you.

BOSS: The load order optimizing tool. Constantly updated, and keeps your mods ordered correctly (most of the time) to ensure minimal conflicts. It's not perfect though, so always check a modder's instructions on their mod page to be sure. Here's another Gopher Tutorial Video on BOSS.
:siren:Note: This has been succeeded by LOOT (See next tool)

LOOT: Short for Load Order Optimization Tool, this little program has replaced BOSS as the go-to for sorting and organizing your mods for more compatibility. Mod Organizer comes with this by default. Basically what it does is it ditches the Master Load Order concept for a more precise sorting method that looks for incompatibilities and conflicts based on users' input, and sorts whatever mods you have accordingly to have your load order run as smooth as possible.

Wrye Bash: Another important tool. Because of conflicting entries in the same categories, mods will overwrite each other (usually the mod that loads last will implement its changes). Wrye Bash allows for the creation of Bashed Patches, which merge those conflicting changes into a single form. Wrye is also useful for checking what load order your saves have (useful if BOSS fucks up your load order), and to check if any of your mods are missing master files (files they are dependent on).

TESVEdit: Program capable of many useful things, from making merged patches to provide compatibility, to cleaning files from dirty edits, and finally, to check for conflicting issues between two mods. Check out another Gopher video on the basics of cleaning your mods.

Skyrim Performance Monitor: This program’s main purpose is to check the performance of the game on your system. It shows various statistics, such as Memory usage, Video Memory usage, CPU and GPU load, and GPU temperature. Useful if you’re experiencing constant CTDs and are worried that your game might be hitting the 3.1 GB memory hard limit.

The Creation Kit: The official modding tools provided by Bethesda. If you plan on making/editing mods, you will need to learn how to use this. Just ask Seorin of his nightmares about coding in Papyrus!

Unofficial Skyrim Patch: Self-Explanatory. A comprehensive patch that fixes bugs left behind by Bethesda.

Unofficial Hi-Res Pack Patch: Fixes for the Hi-Res DLC (Hi-Res DLC Required)

Unofficial Dawnguard Patch: Fixes for the Dawnguard DLC (Dawnguard DLC required)

Unofficial Hearthfire Patch: Fixes for the Hearthfire DLC (Hearthfire DLC Required)

Unofficial Dragonborn Patch: Fixes for the Dragonborn DLC (Dragonborn DLC Required)

Shut Up Mirmulnir: An “Unofficial Patch” to the USKP: The latest versions of the USKP added lovely voice acting to Mirmulnir (the first dragon you encounter). This patch removes said voice work. BECAUSE OF GATEGATE, REHOSTING OF THIS ON STEAM/NEXUS IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN. DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Weapons And Armor Fixes: A lot of weapons/armors got put into the wrong categories, breaking smithing and perks. This aims to fix that. This is kryptopyr’s remade version. Headbomb’s version is obsolete and many of the changes got rolled into the USKP, so use the remade version. Now comes with Dawnguard and Dragonborn support!

Bounty Gold: So the Jarl puts out a bounty on a group of murderous bandits. Turns out that bounty is only 100 gold! Not worth those multiple reloads now, was it? This allows you to tweak the amount of gold you get on bounties, based on player level and category (dragons, forsworn, giants, bandits) Might be considered cheating, but you’re already modding, so technically you’re already cheating!

Brawl Bugs Patch: So apparently a lot of mods these days break brawls, turning them from honorable duels between inebriated Nords into slaughterfests that inevitably leave the towns devoid of residents (this is mostly a good thing). People didn’t like that, so someone made this. Load as early as possible in your load order!
If this doesn't work, use the Brawl Bugs CHEAT Patch (Thanks Agents!). It simply turns brawls into a no-holds barred affair without the repercussions of having the entire town guard on your rear end for DARING to raise a sword against Uthgerd.

Flora Respawn Fix: Fixes the respawn bug that Bethesda somehow managed to overlook completely.

Acquisitive Soul Gems: Fixes the soul trap system, ensuring that smaller souls don't end up in larger soul gems. Some people have stated that this partially breaks Bound Weapons, and that it completely breaks Apocalypse's Cloak of Souls spell, so check out Smart Souls as an alternative.

SkyUI: Feel like the default UI left something to desire? Had trouble navigating it? Have eyes? Well this is a mod for you! It does everything (well, not really)! Also incorporates the new Mod Configuration Menu which a lot of mods are using these days, so this mod is basically now required on all Skyrim installs!

Categorized Favorites Menu: This mod replaces the single favourites menu with several categorized favourites menus, with subcategories. There are a lot of variants out there as well, tailored for specific mods. CFM Oni Edition is an extension of CFM, which is updated with all the big popular mods.

More Hotkeys Please: Because 8 hotkeys is not enough when you’re playing on PC.

A Quality World Map – With Roads: Pretty simple mod that adds roads to the world map. Handy

Map Overhaul: Lets you zoom in all the way on the map, also shows you where your followers are and has the Small House Map Markers mod packaged with it.

Small House Map Markers: Adds a small map marker for each of your houses to fast travel to. Simple and easy.

Unique Region Names: “In Oblivion, you would see the name of the region you were in when you save the game or go outside. In Skyrim, it always says the same thing: "Skyrim". This is a mod that adds unique names for the nine holds, and a few other locations.” Version 5 breaks Hearthfire, so use Version 3 for now (unless you don’t have Hearthfire, in which case use Version 5).Dragonborn Patch

Better Quest Objectives: Takes the questlog back to the days of Morrowind with text descriptions because MY IMMERSION (and because you’re not an omniscient being who knows where generic bandit NPC #437 is immediately)

Better Dialogue Controls and Better MessageBox Controls: Useful for mouse and keyboard users, this improves navigation through menu boxes and dialogue menus.

Uncle Sheogorath: A goon-made mod that replaces all the loading screen tips and info with stuff that, well, is actually useful, informative, and amusing to boot. You should be using this.

Khajiit Speak - Complete Dialogue Overhaul: Replaces all dialogue options with Khajiit-based responses. This is a good mod, yes? Khajiit highly recommends this mod.

Reflection: This mod brings back the level up messages from Morrowind and Skyrim.

Another Sorting Mod - ASM: A more modern sorting mod, this mod comes with patches for several of the popular mods.

Alternate Start - Live Another Life: Think what you want about Arthmoor, but his alternate start mod is one of the best out there. It gives you a variety of starting options, including some race-specific and DLC-specific options, so you can skip the loving boring Helgen Intro Sequence.

Frostfall: One of the biggest game changers for Skyrim, Frostfall brings the climate of Skyrim into play. Now you'll actually have to worry about that snowstorm on the way to High Hrothgar, because if you're not protected right, it will murder the gently caress out of you. Comes with a bunch of options, so check out the mod page for more info!

Realistic Needs & Diseases: Another game-changer, this mod adds in basic needs (sleep/eat/drink) and penalizes you for forgetting to fulfill those basic needs. Also adds a few new cooking recipes to make things easier on you. Diseases also get changed, and progress from mild annoyance to major panics if you don't cure them. It's not too overbearing, but it's enough so that you don't get to finish the main quest in a single run.

Morrowloot: Ok so let's be honest, Skyrim's leveled loot system is balls stupid. This mod fixes that. It removes everything that's above Steel category from the leveled and crafting lists and adds them as static objects in the game world. Now you'll actually have to find the rare crap. Stuff like Dwarven gear is found inside Dwarven ruins, Orcish stuff is carried by, get this, orcs. The mod also adds several artifacts from past games into Skyrim (Boots of Blinding Speed :getin:), albeit in ugly form. Oh, and there's only one set of Daedric gear in the entire game, which means that if you want Daedric gear, you better haul your rear end over to the College of Winterhold and get good at conjuration. The mod still has some problems though, like not removing all the Ebony gear from Draugrs, but it's not that much. Here's a version with crafting put back in, for you goddamn cheaters. TES Alliance Link

Morrowloot 4E Edition: This is a slight remake of Trainwiz's Morrowloot mod, which seeks to add higher tier armors back into the crafting lists in the most lore-friendly way possible. Certain races can now craft specific tiers of armors once they reach the specific perks, while all other races must have improved Smithing skills to be able to craft them. Dwarven gear crafting is now tied to a quest. However, the mod still keeps the essence of Morrowloot in the fact that all this higher tier gear is removed from the leveled loot lists and instead placed as static objects throughout the game world. Complete with Dawnguard and Dragonborn support, as well as patches for both Insanity's Lore Weapon Expansion and PrivateEye's Heavy Armory mods.

ASIS: Allows you to customize enemy spawns and AI. Enemies now have access to perks, spells, and potions that were previously unavailable. This can be both a good thing and bad thing. SPERG Users: It's recommended that you include SPERG as an exception so enemies don't get SPERG perks. Otherwise you'll run into Falmer who will murder the gently caress out of you with ice magic. Requires Java!

Dragon Soul Relinquishment: This mod allows you to trade in your extra dragon souls for new gameplay boons, like increased stats, boosts to shouts, perk points, increases to Unarmed Damage and Carry Weight. Pretty cool if you have a mod that increases the amount of dragons in the game.

Complete Crafting Overhaul Remade: Kryptopyr's remake of Headbombs CCO, this mod makes a ton of changes to the crafting system, including faction armors and the ability to disable specific types of items from the lists, grant you smithing experience for using the Tanning Rack and Smelter, and now allows you to craft unenchanted faction gear for whichever faction you're in, as well as unenchanted replicas of a majority of artifacts. The mod also includes complete integration options for JaySuS Swords, Bandoliers Bags and Pouches, and JewelCraft, helping to cut down on esp file count. Also includes an option to craft the variant armors from the aMidianBorn Book of Silence Retexture Pack, and patches for Winter is Coming, Cloaks of Skyrim, Heavy Armory, and Frostfall. Requires both Dawnguard and Dragonborn

Trade & Barter: An overhaul of the economy system, this mod allows you to change a lot of factors that buying and selling take into account. For example, you can make it so that being Thane of a city nets you 25% better prices. This mod also allows you to receive better prices from crafting vendors depending on the respective crafting skill (i.e. Better alchemy skill = better prices from Alchemy vendors). Great if you don't want to end up with a million gold after finishing Dragon Rising.

Stealth Skills Rebalanced: A complete overhaul of the stealth system in Skyrim. Several changes to stealth skills, such as Lockpicking (gauntlets now cripple your lockpicking and pickpocket abilities). A pretty good mod if you're tired of being able to hide in plain sight from NPCs.

Run For Your Lives: Ever walked into a village and had a dragon show up and slaughter half the people? Of course you have! This mod makes it so that any non-warrior class NPC will run indoors faster than Usain Bolt the moment a dragon attacks.

Deadly Dragons: Turns dragons into real murder machines. You can change between three presets for increased dragon difficulty, or tweak your own settings.

Passive Weapon Enchant Recharging: Finally, Morrowind-style weapon recharging! No more hauling around tons of soul gems to recharge your enchanted weapons (Of course, you can still use them to speed up the recharging process)!

Timing Is Everything - Quest Delay and Timing Control: Serves mainly to adjust the requirements for various quests that are only triggered when the player reaches a certain level. Here you can set the level requirements higher to make the endgame more fun, or set them lower for an additional challenge or to get that sweet loot early on. You can also adjust the starting requirements for both Dawnguard and Dragonborn's main quest lines as well.

The Choice is Yours - Fewer Forced Quests and Improved Dialogue Options: Ever avoided talking to NPCs because you were worried that they would give you another quest to fill up your increasingly longer journal? This mod helps fix that. Now those quests won't be triggered unless you decide to pursue them. Rumors are just that, rumors.

Thieves Guild Requirements - No More Brynjolf Auto-Start: Changes the Thieves Guild questline so that it doesn't start (i.e. Brynjolf doesn't immediately approach you when you enter Riften) until you've met certain thief-y requirements. Oh and something about actually buying that Falmerblood Elixir Brynjolf is always selling.

Dynamic Things: Turns every single static container such as crates and barrels into actual containers. You can also designate a container as a safe container and just dump all your stuff in it without worrying that it'll be reset in a few days time. Also includes lootable woodpiles (useful for Frostfall users).

iNeed - Food Water and Sleep by Isoku: Isoku, of Wet & Cold fame, has released this basic needs mod. It's a minimal design which has an option to automatically feed and drink from your food inventory. Use this if you find RN&D to be to intrusive.

Hunterborn: This mod overhauls the simple routine of hunting, killing, and looting wildlife throughout Skyrim. Now you can dress down, skin, harvest, and butcher your kills. The mod author has designed this mod to work in conjunction with both Frostfall and RN&D, and comes with native patches for both mods. Note to Frostfall users: if your game is complaining about Frostfall's update script taking too long, try turning off animations and the hunting knife requirement. The author has included tips on how to improve performance with both mods running in tandem.

Immersive Animations: Refines most of the animations so that your character doesn't look awkward as gently caress.

Enhanced Animation: A similar, but more lightweight counterpart to Immersive Animations.

Fores New Idles in Skyrim - FNIS: This mod allows the user to add and play new idle animations. It is also used by many mods as the required tool to include their custom idle animations into the game.

XP32 Maximum Skeleton: A multi purpose skeleton for animations in Skyrim. Includes a new skeleton structure.

Realistic Ragdolls and Force: Because you hate fun, this mod makes the physics work somewhat properly.

Dual Sheath Redux: An overhaul of the sheath and sheathing animation system in Skyrim. Now allows you to show which weapons you have equipped if you are dual wielding. Also allows for shields and staves to be placed on your back.

New Animations for Magic Casting: Overhauls the magic casting animations, so you don't look like a loving caveman when casting magic.

YY Animation Replacer - Mystic Knight: Another magic casting animation overhaul. This one focuses on battlemages, and includes a new sneak animation. Recommended only because the sneak animation is better than the standard Skyrim one.

YY Animation Replacer - Zweihander: Hold your two-handed weapon over your shoulder, because you don't play baseball in Skyrim.

Belt-Fastened Quivers: Originally added by Chesko to solve clipping issues with Frostfall, people liked this enough that he made it a standalone mod. This puts arrow quivers at the waist, and comes complete with new animations for drawing arrows.

Immersive Armors: Hothtrooper44 is really good at making lore-friendly and aesthetically pleasing armors, and this compilation package adds them all to the leveled lists. Version 7 adds even more armors and shields, and adds them to the leveled lists dynamically through an injector script.

Warmonger Armory: Another mod with a similar style to Immersive Armors, this armor mod keeps as close to the vanilla look and feel while at the same time providing several amazingly detailed armors. Complete with an optional DLC patch for more armors, as well as a leveled list plugin for integration into the game world.

Dreogan's Skyforge Shields and Dragonbone Ebonsteel Armor: Dreogan's stuff is really well done. The armor can be crafted with the Dragon and Ebony smithing perks, while the Shields are tied to the Companions questline and are only available for crafting once "Glory of the Dead" is completed. Now integrated into IA v7!

Armonizer Armors Pack: Another pretty decent armor compilation, with its own way of implementing the armors into the game world. Requires Dawnguard

Tribunal Robes: Skyrim lacked mage-themed clothing. This mod adds in Morrowind-themed robes for mage characters. Now included in IA v7

The Witcher Armors: The guys behind The Witcher series are pretty cool about their distribution policies, so these made it into the mod scene!

Sabre Cat Gear: Wear Sabre Cat fur all over! :black101:

Cloaks of Skyrim: Adds cloaks and capes to the crafting and leveled lists to find throughout the world. Pretty cool (and sensible, since Skyrim is a cold loving place!)

Winter Is Coming - Cloaks: Adds even more cloaks and hoods to the game. Includes a Cloaks of Skyrim patch for maxmimum compatibility!

Aetherium Armor and Weapons Collection: Don't say it's not lore-friendly, because it is (also it is kickass).

Bandolier - Bags and Pouches: Adds bags and pouches and bandoliers to the game so you can cheat your carrying capacity without use of the console. And they look pretty cool. Here's a Dawnguard Patch!

Dreamburrow's Regal Assassin and Regal Huntsman Armors: Some pretty good Assassin's Creed styled armors. Regal Huntsman Armor requires both Dragonborn and Dawnguard

Bosmer Armor Pack: A high-res set of armor and weapons that are based around Bosmer lore that is worth a look. Will be included in IA v7.

Opulent Outfits - Mage Robes of Winterhold: A complete overhaul of the mage robes of Skyrim, with unique colors for each of the 5 schools of magic. Comes as either a replacer pack or a standalone pack. Unfortunately the mod author stopped working on it before completion, but it's still a good pack to get.

Zerofrost's Armors: These are incredibly well done, high resolution armors that, honestly, look pretty loving badass.

Actualize Apparel - Craftable Clothing: Adds a large variety of clothing to the crafting lists so mage types have more variety and warriors don't have to walk around in clunky rear end armor all the time.

Craftable Cultist Armors: I personally thought that the cultist outfit from Dragonborn looked pretty cool, especially for a battlemage, but of course :bethesda: hosed it up by making it all different pieces of armors, so I went in and added 3 versions to the crafting list (heavy, light, and clothing). Obviously this requires Dragonborn.

MECRs Classic Nord Shields: Adds a MASSIVE amount (225) of shields to the world of Skyrim, all with a Viking theme.

Insanity's Shields: Even more shields, now with high res textures made from scratch. Because there can never be too many shields!

Konahrik's Accoutrements: This mod adds complete armor/robe sets to the Dragon Masks that grant unique bonuses. It also includes a small overhaul of the Dragon Priests to make them more difficult and entertaining.

:steam:DragonAtom's Dragon Masks - Face Slot Special: The Dragon Masks were mostly geared toward mage characters, but they were given armor ratings which effectively made them useless for the Mage Armor Perk. This mod removes the armor classification/rating, removes the hoods, and puts them in a separate slot so they can be worn with Hoods and Circlets!

Immersive Weapons: Goes along with Immersive Armors (if you want), adds 218 weapons. Perhaps poorly named though as it's nowhere near as good as the armor mod.

Weaponizer: A sister mod to Armonizer, it aims to do the same thing the latter does (that is, compile a bunch of weapon mods into one big mod to cut down on plugin count).

JaySuS’s Swords: Despite spelling his name in a strange way this guy makes some good looking weapons, check them out!

Weapons of the Third Era MoS Edition: Add new weapons based on Morrowind and Oblivion to the leveled lists. MasterOfShadows got banned, so don't expect any further updates. However if you're good with modding, you can pick up 747's original mod here and do what you want with it!

Unexpected Blades: Some nice, eastern flavored swords for you assassin types!

Dreogan's Skyforge Weapons: A sister mod to Dreogan's Skyforge Shields. Expect the same quality!

Better Bows: Adds a few new and (somewhat) unique bows to the crafting list. Also adds a merchant in Whiterun (in the Drunken Huntsman) if you don't want to craft them.

Unique Bows Collection: Adds several more new and (very) unique (as in they're all made from scratch) bows.

Heavy Armory: Adds a ton more weapon types (including spears!), that use some of the vanilla animations. Some of them are well done, while others (silver and ancient nord) aren't so well done. Still worth a look though!

Unique Uniques: This mod takes the unique weapons that are found in Skyrim and makes their appearance actually unique. All textures and meshes are done by hand, from scratch.

Insanity's Weapons Collection: From the author of Unique Uniques comes an incredibly detailed collection of new items. Most of them are katanas, but he has gone and brought back the Morrowind styled Dwemer weapons as well. Also included in his collection are Goldbrand, the Umbra Sword, and Chrysamere. Now if only he went back and remade Trueflame and Hopesfire (and maybe Stendarr's Hammer)...

Insanity's Lore Weapon Expansion: From the same person behind Unique Uniques comes a really well done weapons mod that seeks to reintroduce many of the weapons from past Elder Scrolls games into Skyrim. You'll find weapons from both Cyrodiil and Morrowind included.

Isilmeriel LOTR Weapons Collection: Didn't we all love the Lord of the Rings as teenagers? Well enjoy all the weapons from the films!

Staves of Skyrim: Don't think we've (i.e modders and not me) forgotten about you wizardy types. Whip out your staff and give them a good twack with your knob... wait no!

Apocalypse Spell Package: Adds over 180 new spells to the game, and are pretty well balanced.

Thunderchild - Epic Shout Package: Adds 20+ new shouts to the game, along with overhauling the shout system in Skyrim. Play as a true Tongue, and destroy your enemies with the overwhelming power of the Thu'um.

Dwemerverse - Dwarven Magic Package: From the creator of Apocalypse and Thunderchild comes Dwemerverse, a new magic package that centers around the long lost Dwemer. Play as a Dwarven Scientist!

Improved Dragon Shouts: Not as extensive as Thunderchild, this mod simply overhauls the standard shouts that are available in Skyrim.

Midas Magic: Adds 60+ new spells into the game, might be a bit overpowered.

Spell - Master of Time and Space: Adds the one spell you will want.

Portal - Dynamically Placed Teleportation: Simply put, this is Mark and Recall. How we missed you.

True Bound Armors: Adds bound armors and bound shields to the game to complete the conjuration experience. Want the spells to fit the overall conjuring from Oblivion theme? Use the True Bound Daedric Armors Version instead!

Soulfire: Adds a lesser power that ties your magicka pool to enchanted weapons, so you don't have to lug around tons of soul gems.

Resplendent Racials Package: An updated verion of the Excellent Racials package, this overhauls the racials system in Skyrim, making each race have unique abilities and powers.

Aurora Doomstone Package: Like the Racials package, this mod is a complete overhaul of the doomstones found in Skyrim. Each Doomstone now grants one unique ability and one unique power.

EFF - Extensible Follower Framework: Allows you to do a ton of things with your followers, and allows you up to 100 active followers at any given time. The latest (beta) version adds a companion wheel ala New Vegas style too!

AFT - Amazing Follower Tweaks: Another really good follower mod.

Convenient Horses: Overhauls horses, allowing a ton of tweaks, including armors, horses for followers, and making it so that your horse doesn't loving die because you jumped off a mountain.

Armored Sabre Cat Mount: IT'S loving BATTLECAT :black101:

Hoth: Hothtrooper44's personal follower mod, this guy is pretty badass, and can give you bounty quests using the Skyrim's Radiant system.

Vanilla Followers Enhanced: Goon Mad Archivist decided that instead of making new followers, it is instead time to make existing NPCs become fully functional followers, complete with commentary. Spread the word of Talos with Heimskr leading the charge! Or maybe you want to watch the world burn alongside Crazy-rear end Pyromancer Anska. Or perhaps you want to be the ULTIMATE DICK and swagger through Skyrim with that condescending bastard Nazeem at your side. More followers are forthcoming!

Dovahbear: Yup, it's a bear with THAT helmet.

Dovahbit of Caerbannog: A cute little pet rabbit with the iconic iron helmet that's pretty goddamn useful as storage. Very :3:

Immersive Patrols: Pretty much the best NPC mod out there, this mod adds a ton of NPCs to the game that fall into the game's faction system. You'll see Thalmor Agents fighting it out with Stormcloaks, skirmishes between Imperial Legionnaires and Stormcloaks, bloodbaths between Vigilants and Vampires, and more. Even more if you have Dawnguard and Dragonborn!

Guard Dialogue Overhaul: Completely overhauls NPC dialogues so that you don't get stuck with the same boring arrow in the knee lines over and over again.

Interesting NPCs: Adds new and dynamic NPCs that are voice-acted in an attempt to make Skyrim feel more populated. It's pretty good, but the voice acting ranges from really good to hilariously bad, so proceed at your own peril.

Inconsequential NPCs: Adds more NPCs to the cities of Skyrim that could care less about who you are. This mod uses the stock Skyrim voice lines, so no surprises with voice acting.

Populated Cities: Even more NPCs to liven up Skyrim. Also uses standard Skyrim voice lines.

:steam:Dwemer Spectres: Brings back Dwemer Specters of Morrowind fame and puts them into the Dwemer ruins throughout Skyrim.

OBIS - Organized Bandits In Skyrim: This mod adds a ton of new bandit groups/classes to the world of Skyrim. It makes Skyrim a truly dangerous place.

Automatic Variants: Adds variety to the world of Skyrim. No longer will you fight the same bear! Requires a bit of work to set up though.

Aethernautics - A Space Travel Mod: Trainwiz is a pretty cool guy who makes pretty cool mods. This one is no exception (unless you count him being out of his mind while on painkillers while making it as one). It looks good, plays great, and is worth a look. :steam:Steam Workshop Link:steam: TES Alliance Link

Falskaar: This is a DLC-sized mod that was put together by one guy who basically used it as his resume in the hopes of getting a job at Bethesda. Its quality is on par with that of a standard TES expansion package (minus the voice acting), and is definitely worth a look. Be warned, you WILL need to get patches for most of your mods to avoid loving your save file.

Moonpath to Elsewyr: A lore-friendly quest into the reaches of Elsewyr. Includes a ton of cool stuff, and spiders (if you're scared of/don't like them, this is probably not for you). Also airships! :haw:

The Lost Wonders of Mzark: Another Trainwiz mod, this is once again a Dwemer-themed quest mod that aims to play out in a different direction, involving more puzzle solving and platforming. Being a Trainwiz mod, expect some high quality work. Warning: Certain areas of this quest mod are graphically intensive, and will probably eat older machines. TES Alliance Link

Wyrmstooth: Venture into the north on a mission from the East Empire Company ("The heartless bastards" - Teldryn Sero) to slay a dragon. Only things aren't so simple (as always in the world of The Elder Scrolls). Pretty well done, definitely worth a look!

:steam:ThirteenOranges Places and Quests: Some pretty good quests and locations to look at.

Undeath: A necromancy quest mod that allows you to become a true Lich. Fans of Oblivion's necromancy system will like this one. Currently breaks quite a few things, so wait for updates!

Conan - The Hyborian Age: A quest and dungeon mod centered around Conan the Barbarian. Check it out if you enjoy anything Ahhhnuld.

Unique Vampire Dens: Goon Gonkish felt there wasn't enough options when feeding as a Vampire in Dawnguard as most of it was you just sneaking up on some poor sod in the woods. The mod adds some hidden areas for :drac: players to grab a bite in 5 different cities (locations are in the description if you wanna spoil it). Requires Dawnguard

Haven Bag: Basically Skyrim's version of the TARDIS.

Riverside Lodge: A really nice house that sits on the waterfall overlooking Whiterun from the southwest. Comes complete with autostorage scripts and is configurable. Includes all the crafting stations too. Oh and something about a sauna (I've never actually used it).

Heimsgramor: A small house situated in Riverwood. Complete with crafting stations.

Dovahkiin Hideout: While not technically an exclusive housing mod, this mod instead seeks to add a massive basement that connects to each of the vanilla Skyrim houses, allowing for easy transportation between cities. Although this is the main feature, the basement itself is incredibly well stocked and fully-featured.

When Vampires Attack: In the same vein as Run For Your Lives! this mod makes all non-warrior NPCs run indoors during vampire attacks. Because gently caress having to reload everytime you find an important NPC dead after a vampire attack.

Convenient Crossbows: Adds crossbows to NPCs and to the crafting lists so that you don't have to trek all the way back to Fort Dawnguard to get bolts.

Dragon Aspect Cooldown Removal: I didn't like the once-a-day restriction of Dragon Aspect, so I tossed this together and put it up for download. It does nothing to the shout other than remove the cooldown and turn it into a regular shout. It has a higher cooldown than Storm Call, but it can still be used like any other shout.

Shezrie's Hearthfire Kitchens and Greenhouses: Adds a fully functional kitchen to the small back room behind the main hall in Hearthfire houses, and moves the Greenhouse to the North Wing option, so now you can have bedrooms and a greenhouse.

Custom Hearthfire Basements: Someone finally managed to get around the clusterfuck that is the Creation Kit to make this wonderful mod. It adds a completely new, customizable basement to each of the Hearthfire homes that can be expanded with any of the Hearthfire rooms. So for example, you can now choose to have a kitchen up top and move your armory down to the basement.

goatk's TNF Houses: If you want to spice up your Vanilla Skyrim houses with Hearthfire goodies, try these out. They mostly stick to the vanilla forms, with the sole exception being Breezehome, which gets a basement and tower.

Heljarchen Farm: This mod adds a rundown farm north of the Loreius Farm and south of Hearthfire's Heljarchen Hall that can be built either by hand (using custom Hearthfire workbenches) or with automatic labor. Once furnished, the farm comes with a greenhouse, meadery, mill, guard tower, plenty of space for planting and farming, the ability to hire labor to manage your house, and the ability to collect a profit from your farm and meadery.

Windstad Mine: Following the same concept of Heljarchen Farm (made by the same author), this mod allows you to build up and run your own mine north of Hearthfire's Windstad Manor.

Q:My game crashes at the main menu! What gives?
A:You're probably missing a master file for one of your plugins. Load up Wrye Bash and look for any plugin files marked in red. These are usually the ones which need attention. Wrye Bash will tell you what masters a plugin file relies on.
Q:When I try to install SkyUI, it tells me it can't find SKSE. What gives?
A: Are you using Mod Organizer? If so, then ignore the message. SkyUI will install just fine.
Q:Mod Organizer keeps getting "Server Not Found" errors when trying to download mods! How do I fix this?
A: Go to Settings > Workarounds> and change the NMM Version field to 0.47.0.

Recommended Mods for a First Time Play-through:
Generally speaking, you'll want to do your first Skyrim run with as few mods as possible, that way you know exactly what you want to change about the game.

Goon recommendations for a first timer usually come down to:
-Unofficial Patches
-SkyUI
-Weapons and Armor Fixes
-Clothing & Clutter Fixes
-Even Better Quest Objectives
-Run For Your Lives
-When Vampires Attack
-Better Dialogue Controls
-Better Message Controls
-No Poison Dialogues
-Brawl Bugs Patch
-Timing Is Everything
-The Choice is Yours (so your quest log doesn't clutter up)
-Smart Souls/Aquisitive Soul Gems
-Thieves Guild Requirements (So you don't get roped into the Thieves Guild automatically)
-Bounty Gold (optional)
-Faster Mining
-Guard Dialogue Overhaul (no new dialogue, just makes them use existing stuff correctly)
-Static Mesh Improvement Mod (makes things look worlds better)

Most of these are things that make some of the glaring flaws of the game a bit less harsh (such as getting tossed into the Thieves Guild questline your first time in Riften), or making sure that vital NPCs stay alive during Vampire/Dragon attacks.

Using the SKSE Memory Fix (Useful for fixing Infinite Loading Screens and CTDs) (Credit to LtSmash)
Infinite loading screens can also be fixed by using the SKSE memory allocation fix that adjusts how much memory skyrim reserves to fix a bug where it hangs trying to request more memory. This is a default part of SKSE for the last few versions and everyone should use it. If you don't have a skyrim\Data\SKSE\skse.ini create one in notepad.
Add the lines
code:
[Memory]
DefaultHeapInitialAllocMB=X
ScrapHeapSizeMB=Y
And replace X with how much ram to allocate. 512 is vanilla. 768 should fix it for most setups but really crazy mod combinations might need 1024. This of course uses more RAM. The replace Y with 256 unless you set X to be 1024 or larger, if you don't skyrim will crash. So it should look like
code:
[Memory]
DefaultHeapInitialAllocMB=768
ScrapHeapSizeMB=256
or
code:
[Memory]
DefaultHeapInitialAllocMB=1024
ScrapHeapSizeMB=512
Invalid Script Registration
Add
code:
[General]
ClearInvalidRegistrations=1
to skse.ini and if your save has any broken/removed scripts marked to run periodically SKSE will slowly prune them. It takes a fair bit realtime to clean them up but if you are suffering from them your save will slowly start to perform better.

Both these fixes are safe and harmless if you are not suffering from the issues they fix.

SKYRIM VISUAL MODDING
Introduction

Visually Modding Skyrim is a pain in the rear end, because of trying to separate all the weird poo poo from the good stuff on Skyrim Nexus. So hopefully this guide will simplify some of this.

But why would you want or need to make skyrim prettier?

Lighting Essentials

Climates of Tamriel (CoT)
- Completely overhauls Skyrims weather systems and outdoor lighting
- CoT has a major effect on my of the ENB mods listed on the Skyrim Nexus due to its changes to outdoor lighting.
- Incompatible with RCRN

OR

Realistic Colours and Realistic Nights (RCRN)
- Incompatible with CoT
- If you are using this, you need to make the RCRN launcher point to the SKSE launcher.
- Overhauls lighting/weather/adds visual effects all in one package.
- Note: The weather currently added by this mod is nowhere near as good as Climates of Tamriel.
- If you don't want to fiddle around with ENB you can use this.
- To make RCRN work in tandem with ENB:
    -rename RCRN's d3d9.dll to RCRN_d3d9.dll or d3d9_RCRN.dll (or anything else)
    -Download your ENB
    -Install ENB
    -Open enbseries.ini, and in the PROXY section put this in:
    code:
    EnableProxyLibrary=true
    InitProxyFunctions=true
    ProxyLibrary=[Your renamed RCRN d3d9 file]

OR

Realistic Lighting Overhaul (RLO)
- Overhauls the lighting throughout Skyrim.
- Compatible with CoT, but do not use any of the CoT interior lighting or dungeon modules
- Incompatible with RCRN

ENB

Get the latest ENB binaries here. Do not reupload them to the Skyrim Nexus under any circumstance whatsoever.

ENB is a tool that lets you apply additional effects on top of Direct3D games. It is the biggest game changers in terms of skyrim visual modding. The latest versions of ENB also incorporate a workaround for Skyrim's 3.1 GB Memory Hard Limit, thanks to a hack created by Boris. The really cool thing about this workaround is that you don't need to have ENB enabled to do so.

Important Notes About ENB

- Always use the Wrapper version of the ENB (aka copying the d3d9.dll from WrapperVersion to the root of Skyrim)
- Most ENB configurations will have a major effect on performance.
- It can be completely tweaked by editing the enbseries.ini file, which lets you remove stuff such as Depth of Field and other visual effects.
- Most ENB configurations on Skyrim Nexus specify a specific version of ENB to use, and you should follow that.
- You can turn off/on ENB while in game, by pressing Shift+F12
- You can see your FPS by pressing * on your keypad

Important Steps Prior to Using ENB

- Disable Anti Aliasing from within Skyrim Launcher if you are going to use SMAA

Open SkyrimPrefs.ini located in your My Games/Skyrim folder and make sure the following are set:
code:
bFloatPointRenderTarget=1
bShadowsOnGrass=1
bTreesReceiveShadows=1
Popular and Goon Recommended ENB Configurations (Most of these are designed for compatibility with Climates of Tamriel unless noted otherwise)
ProjectENB

Seasons of Skyrim

- If you run into blue tint covering the screen from time to time (version 0.119 only!), open enbseries.ini and change this:
code:
WaitBusyRenderer=true
True Vision ENB

Quietcool ENB

Phinix Natural ENB

Texture Pack Combiner

Alright, if you have 1GB+ of VRAM, a lot of free time, and are willing to download 5GB+, then you can use texture pack combiner, to merge and pick the best possible combination of textures. Read the link above, it covers the majority of the mods below.

It has a README and I also threw my ENB config in there for shits and giggles. I forgot to mention that I change the hotkey to toggle ENB to shift-F11 instead of shift-F12 (stupid screenshot key in steam.) To change it back, change the key from 122 to 123 in enbseries.ini

Again, credit people who actually made this stuff. I'll seed it as much as I can but I don't have a lot of upload speed, so the more people who seed the better.

Skyrim HD - 2k Textures

aMidianBorn Book of Silence - High Resolution Texture Replacer Package

- What started out as a simple project to retexture the game's weapons, armors, and unique items, has turned into a full blown project to provide some of the best retextures available. It goes without a doubt that this mod, despite the odd name, is becoming the definitive retexture pack to use.
- Includes several downloads for each category (Weapons, Armor, Unique Items, Creatures, Landscape)
- Includes variants for Glass Armor (Steel Glass, Thalmor Glass, and Golden Glass) with a new plugin to include all 3 in the game.
- Includes variants for Ebony Armor (Golden Ebony, Black Ebony, Silver Ebony) with a new plugin to include all 3 in the game. The same applies to the Ebony Mail, minus the plugin.
- Cabal is supposedly working on a separate package for Automatic Variants

Additional Lighting Mods

Lanterns of Skyrim - All in One {PLUGIN}
- Adds more laterns to main roads, and towns, without the stupid engineers CLARALUX has
- If you have Dawnguard: Dawnguard Patch

Weather Mods

Supreme Storms {PLUGIN}
- Makes snow/rain storms a lot more intense.
- CoT/RCRN compatible

Weather Patch for CoT - Fog and Overcast Weathers {PLUGIN}
- Improves upon the foggy and overcast weather patterns of CoT
- Compatible with Supreme Storms (Pick up the Supreme Storms version on the download page)

Consistent Stars - Climates of Tamriel Patch {PLUGIN}
- Fixes the unintentional error of stars changing colors/patterns overnight with CoT

Visual Utility Mods

IMAGINATOR - Visual Control Device for Skyrim {PLUGIN}
- Gives you the ability to summon a npc that lets you change visual settings such as contrast, saturation, gamma, etc in game.
- Note Currently there is a bug, that if you summon the NPC and you can't seem to talk to him. Save your game, load and then resummon him, and it should work.

Night Sky Mods

Inside The Nebula

Enhanced Night Skyrim

Lorkhan's Vision - Night Sky

Lorkhan's Vision - Moons

Insanity's Moons

Environment Visual Mods

Static Mesh Improvement Mod - SMIM {PLUGIN}
- Improves meshes by removing seams and other problems in the meshes.
- if you are using some of the other mods below, such as Dynamic Snow, install this last.

WATER - Water and Terrain Enhancement Redux {PLUGIN}
- Overhauls Water Effects

Realistic Water Two {PLUGIN}
- An alternative to WATER

Skyrim Flora Overhaul
- NOT Compatible with Lush Grass/Lush Trees
- Instead of Lush Trees you can use Diverse Trees Expanded, under optional files (thanks Oceanbound)

Lush Trees & Grass

Better Dynamic Snow {PLUGIN}
- Makes Skyrim's Snow look a lot better

Glowing Ore
- Makes Ore Glow, in conjunction with ENB it looks rather nice

Real Ice
- Better looking Ice

Hybrid's HD Plants and Herbs Retexture
- Improves a majority of the plants throughout the gameworld.

Realistic Mushrooms

Bellyache's HD Dragons
- Makes the dragons you fight look a lot better. Because even your enemies need to look good.

Ruins Clutter Improved
- Completely improves the visuals inside Nordic ruins.

Vivid Landscapes - Cliffs and Creeks

Vivid Landscapes - Dungeons and Ruins

Vivid Landscapes - Volcanic Area

Seorin's

:spergin:Skyrim Perk Enhancements and Rebalanced Gameplay:spergin:

SPERG is a lightweight overhaul mod that I'm making for Skyrim. It's a little more intense than my lightweight Oblivion leveling mod, but has mostly the same goal: make the leveling experience more fun and balanced, and don't change anything else. It was being discussed a lot in the Skyrim mods thread, so I was asked to make a new thread for it.

Here are the main features:

Automatic Perks
I took all the boring perks that you need to buy to be effective and made them earned automatically at different skill tiers (20, 30, 50, 75, 100). Then I tossed in all the perks that made the game less annoying instead of more fun. The end result is a skill system that feels much closer to Morrowind and Oblivion without changing any of the rest of Skyrim. It's still the same, awesome game, just with a lot of tedium removed.

New Perks
This is the part that's most actively being developed right now. I tore the perk trees down, and now I'm building them back up. However, this isn't a perk mod that adds hundreds of useless, new perks. Every perk is useful and meaningful. I have pretty strict requirements for what I will and won't add, and the end result is a very polished feel that doesn't seem like you're playing a mod at all. It really just feels like Skyrim, but better.

See the new perk trees here!

Equipment Melting
One of the optional parts of this mod is a slight adjustment to skill leveling rates, but that wasn't enough for Smithing. The problem there is there just aren't enough ways to acquire raw materials. By allowing you to melt down looted and stolen equipment, it not only fixes Smithing in a very natural way (you always get materials relevant to your level), but it also brings back the joy of stealing everything that isn't nailed down.

Quest Rewards
This is the tiniest little addition, but I added a small script that watches your "quests completed" stat and grants you one point in a semi-random skill every time you complete a quest. This makes those last few points a bit less annoying since otherwise they can take forever, and it's a small consolation prize whenever you get a hilariously lovely quest reward. Unfortunately, it doesn't work for all quests, but that's because the "quests completed" stat itself is broken.

Perk Reset
A bunch of new perks are more fun when you get to reset your perks and play with all new ones. There's a quest for it from an old version, but everyone's just going to use the perk reset in the config menu now anyway.

Many goons have given this a shot so far and loved it. Existing characters can be used just fine, so there's no need to wait (make a backup save first, like you should when installing any mod). It's very lightweight, so while it will conflict with anything that modifies perks, it won't conflict with nearly anything else. It won't add terrible voice acting, overpowered weapons, or more pointless grinding. It just makes leveling fun again.

Download Links
SKSE - Skyrim Script Extender. Technically not "required", but get it anyway.
SkyUI - You need this to use the in-game config menu, which you want to use, so get it.
Skyrim -Community- Uncapper - My perks are designed to be earned at a slower rate (one every two levels), so if you don't use the uncapper to limit perk gain, you become hilariously overpowered. That can be fun, too, but maybe try the balanced version first.
SPERG v4.0 - This is the latest stable version. It's probably not bug free, but it's very smooth thanks to thorough testing by goons. You must uninstall any prior SPERG version before upgrading to 4.0 or higher! Use the uninstall button in the config menu. Not doing so will break your game.

Troubleshooting
If your uncapper file isn't working (i.e. you get one perk every level) try manually overwriting it in your mods directory instead of loading it through Mod Organizer.

Exploding Chickens

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UbrezUC_EM

If you want the spell in the video above, you'll have to add it via the console:
1: Type the following into the console (with quotes): help "summon exploding chicken"
2: Look at the SPELL returned with the code **01C97E (the first two digits change depending on your load order)
3: Enter "player.addspell **01C97E" in the console, substituting the first two digits with whatever came up on the help query.

Feedback and comments are welcome, so post away. I'll try to answer anything I can, and I can fix most bugs you report, too. Some bugs do elude me. I blame Bethesda.

Is anybody else having an issue with the newer versions of ENB where sometimes just looking in the direction of a random spot will cause your FPS to drop down to 1 and stay there until you look away? Ever since I updated to .212 even with really low stress ENB configs like Project ENB's Maximum Performance option when I get a steady 40 to 60 FPS there will be random times when a spot just kills FPS for no discernible reason. A tent in Stonechill, a bush by the side of the road, a rock by Dawnstar. I can circle it with my back to the points at full FPS but if its on the screen at all I get 1 FPS.

I had a similar issue, but I dropped to 1 FPS whenever I looked at anything that wasn't the sky or the ground. The solution was that I hadn't specified the VRAM in the enb config. Is it possible that got reset when you updated?

Also is there an alternative to Armed to the Teeth? The amount of glitches that has is atrocious and at this point I'd rather just play in first person. Further, I have no idea how to setup Joy of Perspective to work properly with bows when sneaking, the aiming is always so out of whack that I can't hit anything (which is a shame because otherwise the mod is great).

I was actually pretty impressed with Interesting NPCs the other day. I won't ~spoil~ it just in case but a village had a guy added who was sulking around. I assumed he was just there to talk to. Then after I came through a few times an old friend stopped by to see him and convince him to sober up, and then we all banded together to fight a bandit raid. Not a storytelling masterpiece or anything, but it was a cool little quest to stumble across when you think you've seen everything. It felt like a seamless part of the game, though maybe weighted a little toward Oblivion instead of Skyrim's mandatory one (1) dungeon to receive [radiant item] and one (1) Reward Treasure Chest style.

God. loving. Damnit. Do I hate how often NexusMods has been going down lately. This is infuriating as all hell since they host pretty much every Skyrim mod and I need to go there all the time to get little bits of information about compatibility or installation or optionals. Ugh.

Also, OP, I'd recommend including Immersive Weapons, Weaponizer, and Armonizer. Armonizer is basically every single armor worth having that isn't in Immersive Armors, so between the two you'll have 98% of weapons and armor that're worth having, all from 2 mods for each category!

It's a lot of stuff. The workshop is monitored by both Bethesda and Valve so that really limits the amount of stuff that can make it in. Second, there is no way to distribute texture and mesh replacer mods or loose files for that matter. And then there's the filesize limit, which the USKP already broke through, so forget about stuff like Immersive Armors being there.

Woo, new modding thread. Lot's of space to fill with sweet, sweet mods.

Two suggestions for non-mod stuff:
Here's the S.T.E.P. guide to Mod Organizer, since video guides are usually painful to watch. This'll answer many questions that will inevitably be asked.

Skyrim GEMS should probably be in the Sources part. I know, it links back to the Nexus and Workshop, but it is a great resource for finding mods that are known to be good.

Maybe add Dreogan's Skyforge Weapons, since you have his other mods. They all link to each other, but they all deserve a mention in the OP.

Also, Kilroy has a few mods that really deserve to be mentioned, being goon-made and also awesome. Soulfire, for one, is a must-have. It uses your magicka pool to recharge enchanted weapons.

As for myself, I wish someone would make a mod that lets you skip Season Unending. I'd rather the Dovahkiin just tell everyone to shut the gently caress up and get along for a while instead of the stupid rear end negotiations that result in major political changes for no reason.

So do we have a goon modpack or just regular modpack so I don't have to shift through the hellhole known as nexus?

STILL TRYING HARD
Does anyone know if ENB can be enabled through MO? I'm trying to keep the main Skyrim folder as virgin as possible.

Nope. The problem with a big modpack is that everyone's prefences for what they like in their modded games is different and removing individual mods from a pack can be a giant pain.
Also nexus' search has filters for adult content.

Nope. MO can only deal with anything that would normally go into the Data folder or one of it's subfolders.

Hey, Myopic, if yer still around you mind posting the .esp you had to get the warpaints you made ingame? I've been trying myself but I can't figure it out :v:

I would if I had one! I just gave the files the same name as existing warpaints for testing purposes. You add new warpaints one at a time (to each individual race :suicide: ), in the "Tinting" tab of the race data window. Right click on Tint Layer, New. Should be obvious from there.
