Obtuse.....even hokey.
Sorry guys, I was really busy this weekend, I should have some more time to work on an actual update this week, but for now here's a gameplay update!

Gameplay Update 3

So today we're going to talk about defenses. Whereas magical and physical damage is boosted by different stats like Will or Strength respectively, there is no specifically physical or magical defense stat. Instead, Vitality works as the catch-all stat that reduces damage of all types which then works with the defensive properties of the armor that a character is wearing. Armour properties is a really great example of Saga Frontier mechanics being obtuse and misleading. The Defense stat listed on the equip screen only indicates a fraction of the equipped armors effectiveness. A piece of armor does not have one defense stat that reduces all damage by a certain amount. Instead each piece of armor has 8 modifiers to each of the elements in Saga Frontier. As far as I'm aware, there's no way to check these defenses in game, instead you'll have to check an FAQ.

These elements are:
-Slash
-Pierce
-Blunt
-Fire
-Electric
-Ice
-Force

Most of these should be self explanatory aside from Force which is sort of the "Miscellaneous" element. Every armor or accessory has a modifier for each of these defenses that are all added together to determine the final defense for any given element. There are in fact certain items with negative elemental defenses but they are fairly uncommon. I'm not entirely sure, but if I had to guess, the defense stat listed on the equip screen is the sum value for one of the first three elements. Probably slash since it's first on the list. It's also important to note that these elements are not necessarily physical or magical in nature. There are spells with slash or pierce elements and similarly there are physical attacks with fire or electricity. A fair amount of attacks also have multiple elements. This is always a good thing as the damage for multi-element attacks is calculated against the lowest defense. So for example, if you use the attack sword technique Rising Nova which is a Fire/Slash attack on an enemy with 30 fire defense and 50 slash defense, it will calculate the damage as if the enemy had 30 defense.

Aside from the main 8 elements, there are also 5 "sub elements."
-Throw
-Ground
-Water
-Gaze
-Sonic
These 5 elements do not have corresponding defenses associated with them, but are mainly used as flags to provide immunities to certain attacks. It's used for stuff like preventing a flying enemy from being hit from a ground attack. There are a few accessories that provide immunities to these elements and they're almost always a good all around choice, especially with how dangerous water and sonic attacks can be.

Finally, a couple odds and ends about damage that I couldn't fit in anywhere else.

-Attacks that are part of combos ignore defense, this is the main source of the damage buff from combos, but some attacks get additional bonus damage or effects.

-JP and WP costs actually factor into damage! The more expensive an attack is, the more damage it does. This has the hilarious consequence of spell or weapon masteries actually making your attacks weaker. In general though, it's worth it to keep the mastery if you don't want to mix and match spells in order to keep the higher learning rate.

So that's the main gist of defenses provided from weapons and armor. This is going to be mostly relevant for humans and mystic characters whereas monsters have some extra things to consider which I'll cover when we breakdown monsters and mechs in more detail. I hope to have a regular update out sometime later this week.

:aaaaa:

I don't think it's too noticeable - at least I never noticed it. But I learned early on that having no water protection will wreck your poo poo in certain scenarios. And that Harmonium anything is mandatory. Because it protects against Sonic damage, and gently caress sonic damage if I'm not the one dishing it out. I still remember where to go in Shingrow to get a free Harmonium accessory all these years later. I think.

But the defense values being invisible is just such a gigantic gently caress you. Only a few items will tell you outright that they resist certain elements, otherwise you've gotta look it up or figure it out on your own.

Luckily the Harmonium Bangles tell you, and to be perfectly honest, anything that runs off any given defense will be a million times less dangerous than Maelstrom or any area-effect sonic move regardless of equipment. You can get by perfectly well by just going off of the listed numerical "defense" of armor, as long as you protect for the defense-ignoring sub-elements.

They're basically always upfront with what equipment gives total immunity to elements. It honestly isn't even really worth worrying about specific resistances on armor or suits, in practice they're more of a curiosity than anything.

Welp, finally started my parallel playthrough. I don't know what it is about this game - it's extremely flawed and suffers from insufficient development time for sure. But for all that, it just *oozes* charm, and I've never been able to get enough of SaGa battle systems. I'm happier toying with this game than with so many more polished titles over the last fifteen years.

Maybe if I called it 'Interpretive Stabbing'...
The loss of damage from Mastery isn't very noticeable unless you obsessively track your damage values. However... there's a scenario in the game where you can use attacks for free, and it is pretty noticeable there. You lose something like a quarter of your damage on endgame attacks.

Just to be clear, I don't think the sub elements ignore defense. They only exist to serve as checks for immunity against the special elements. The main reason that Sonic and certain water attacks are so dangerous is that they're really good. Saga Frontier doesn't separate its damage formulas between PCs and enemy monsters. An attack that does 500 damage to an enemy with 30 Vit and 40 defense in the appropriate element will do 500 damage to a PC with 30 Vit and 40 defense in the appropriate element. Of course the HP scales are different so 500 damage is much more dangerous for the PC than the enemy. The WP cost bonus also factors in a bit here. Maelstrom and Oscillation are both kind of expensive and that extra 150 or so damage is a lot more dangerous in the enemy's hands.

Alsom considering it's only a 1-WP reduction, it's worth it to go ahead and put a spell on endgame unarmed fighters. (There's a couple of VERY good options for this.)

Sorry this took so long, a combination of laziness, new video games and technical difficulties delayed this update more than I would like.

So we rejoin our heros after a bit of a hiatus as they descend down in the sewers beneath Baccarat. This update is pretty chatty so strap in.

I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of this dungeon. As you can see here, the enemies are weak and it's very dark and constricted. If playing on a console it can be very difficult to find the correct path so there's a good chance you'll be going back and forth bumping into these weak enemies.

Eventually we find Joker, chatting up the gnomes who live under the Casino.
:yarr:But my special exchange rate is double the norm

Sure I can, but before I do, tell me why you killed Ren?
:yarr:Hmm I wonder?
Don't mock me!!!

Joker tosses the gold on the Emelia and the gnomes swarm her allowing him to escape.

Now we have to talk a bit about what happens next. This is actually the splitting off point for whether you get Emelia's good or bad ending. If you chase Joker into the dungeon, you'll fight a miniboss and end up with Emelia's bad ending. If you choose to leave, you'll get the good ending. We're going to be leaving the dungeon because
1: There's not a huge difference between the good and bad ending and the good ending is cannon.
2: While the boss isn't too difficult, we haven't fought to many enemies and are probably under prepared.
3: I hate this dungeon and want to be done with it.

But, what did he really mean by that?
So yeah, Joker gets away and our ending is set. There is absolutely no indication that this is an ending event. I guess you could BS something about Emelia choosing the safety of her team over her desire for revenge, but that's a stretch.

And once we exit the manhole, the scenario ends and we get our usual art piece.

Before we continue on with Emelia's plot we're going to stop at Koorong to pick up some gear. This manhole leads down to one of the best weapon shops in the game.

Down in this sewer there are two mechs. The first one sells guns and the second one sells swords. We pick up a Lethal Gun for Emelia for now.

Alone?
Yes. Joker's in contact with the commander of Trinity Base. He's trying to get information on Cube. After you sneak on the base, we'll create a diversion. Then, I want yout to investigate the relation between the commander and Joker.
How can I complete an important mission like that all alone?
Your good looks make you the most qualified for this mission. You see, the commander of the base, Yaruto is a real pervert. You should be able to get into his harem, no problem.
Harem!? There is no way I am going in there. Not even for Joker. I refuse!

It's nice to see Emelia has some standards the scene transitions a little bit later to Emelia venting to Liza.

I don't want to sound like I'm complaining but, why am I the best for this job? Gimme a break!
But Roufas won't be expecting it. And besides, he doesn't understand women.
Did something happen between you and Roufas?
It's history. I was young and naive and thought he might choose me over his cause...Yeah, like that was going to happen.
It must be tough on you. I mean you've still got to work with him everyday.
That's the price you pay for being young and naive. He doesn't care...sorry, I shouldn't bother you with my personal problems.
That's OK. I think I understand what you're going through. I mean, losing a loved one and all.
Thanks, Emelia. Hey, want a drink?
I'd like to...but I'm feeling sleepy...all of sudd...

Oh Jesus, Roufas roofied her. With mysogyny in video games being such button issue these days compared to when the game came out it really highlights just how sceazy Roufas is being. I know I probably didn't think to much of this when I was younger and playing through this the first time (and also I was much more naive), but Roufas really is an rear end in a top hat. If this game came out today, this scenario would probably make some people's heads spin with how terrible Roufas is.

:geno:Even a pervert like Yaruto ought to be satisfied with this one, at least for a while.
:cop:I hear he's even stalking mystics now. The guy ought to be locked up.

It's kind of odd how they just dump Emelia on the middle of the floor here. Also you'll see this cockpit more than once. Saga Frontier isn't above reusing assets.

The mission is more important than our lives.
She's an innocent girl! She could get...
Get what?
....Let's go, Liza.
I won't allow you two to interfere with the mission.
We're just trying to help.

Annie and Liza are justifiably pissed. I guess Liza wasn't in on the whole plan since she seemed all right with giving her the pills initially.

Liza must have known about it too. Look at this skimpy outfit! This Yaruto guy must be a real horn dog.
So Emelia wakes up in her Dancer outfit. It always reminded me of "I Dream of Genie" in the way it looked. This outfit replaces Emelia's talent list with Annie's which isn't great since Annie's talent list is kind of bad, but it's temporary and will suit our plans just fine.

:whip:Out!

The guards lead us into Yaruto's harem. That gaudy lighting we see on the floor does not bode well.

Oh great. Emelia calling Yaruto a monster is probably accurate in more ways than one. We've seen a few examples here and there, but Saga Frontier monsters are generally sentient and capable of speech. Some of them like Yaruto are even fairly important in some regions.
:btroll:How do you like my collection?
:yarr:You've got lots of fresh meat. Must be real proud.

Joker!!
:btroll:Oh, here come the new ones now. You there, entertain us.
Oh, no. Joker will recognize me.
:btroll:Hurry up or I'll skin you and boil you alive.
:stare:
What a horrible place!! You'll pay for this, Roufas. Yes, I hope you enjoy my dance.

Pay special attention to the girls with the green and white hair on the bottom right.
:btroll:N, No...wait a minute. I like this one too. She whets my appetite. What if I give you a mystic wench from Facinaturu? She's quite a beauty and can do fantastic things with her body!
This must be Roufas.
:btroll:What's going on!?
:yarr:An emergency at Trinity Base? Must be the end of the world. Commander Yaruto's power must be deteriorating real quick.

Joker's gone!! I've got to go after him.

So we exit the harem and we find two of the other captives chilling outside. These two are Asellus and White Rose and one of them will be rounding out our final party.

Hurry, get out of here!
Aren't you coming?
I've got tons of work to do.

Before our team can introduce themselves this beast type just wanders up and starts a fight. This battle is actually really hard. The monster has the same encounter rank modifier as the Swamp and Bio Lab and White Rose and Asellus have early game stats. This can be a real wall if you go here late and Emelia isn't set up well.

The K-9 Mech we've already seen and he's dangerous enough on his own, the new monster is a Fire Pup and you can see him in action in this screenshot. This fight is probably a bit much for us honestly.

White Rose comes with some basic light spells which is nice, but we're still behind. She keeps Emelia up for now, but Asellus is down and will stay as such throughout the fight.

Eventually the K-9 Mech decides he's has enough of this poo poo and Vulcans everyone killing the team. Let's try that again shall we?

This should be much more manageable. The Fire Pup is by himself and the team is spread out so his Fire Breath attack can only hit one person at once.

Asellus goes down again but Emelia is getting in some heavy hits and eventually...

White Rose just absorbed the Fire Pup into her Mystic Sword. Mystics have three mystic weapons which are their primary method for gaining stats. I'll discuss it in more detail in the next Game Play Update.

It must be Zozma. He was planning to sabotage the base.
This isn't Gradius's doing? What's the matter with Roufas?
You're after Yaruto? We can help you get him.
I am Emelia.
I am Asellus.
My name is Princess White Rose.
Princess White Rose...? Some name!

With that these two have joined our team and this is where we will end the update. Next time we'll explore Trinity Base and find out more about this Zozma person. I hope you will join me then.

She may actually be the best aside from the two main characters that don't join anybody else. A pretty standard rule of thumb is, "the harder it is to recruit a character, the better they are", and also possibly "main characters are noticably better than anyone else". Folks like Roufas and Annie who will just tag along with anyone with a pulse are noticably worse than the characters who only show up in their own scenario or one or two others. Yeah, this is the only non-her own scenario Asellus can be an end-game character in; she appears in another's, but not as a permanent character. It's also, if I recall correctly, one of the few where there is a specific crossover of timelines between main characters-- or, well, there would have been, had Asellus' quest actually been finished with its layout of plans, as another character who will show up soon was going to have a bigger role in her quest. As it stands, it feels a little random to have Asellus and White Rose there if you haven't seen the supplementals or the unused text.

As for the glitch it's something that was apparently left in the game intentionally, hence why it bears the name of one of the designers.

Both the Bio Research Lab and the area I believe you're referring to were both supposed to be part of Asellus's quest, actually. She was supposed to visit those locations while trying to decide whether to become a mystic or not, which would've affected what ending she got. Instead they cut those segments and based her choice of ending on something completely different, which I'll let dude cover.

Yeah, I'd like to see what mystery man number 8's plot would have been. I imagine he'd get access to several of Red's exclusive characters for instance, and I'd guess he might actually have some plot connected to the Bio Research Lab. That place is one of only two locations in the game I can think of completely devoid of quest connections, and at the other one is explicitly cut content.

They released a pretty complete storyline of what the 8th character's quest would have been in the big Japanese-only Essence of Saga Frontier book. Someone on Gamefaqs translated that part awhile back so I'll cover how the 8th character interacts with the main character at the end of their scenario and also point out some storyline differences. The portrayals of some of the villains and final bosses are particularly funny just because of how different they are from their in-game behavior, but that's something to be covered in more detail once we get there.

Just a reminder, that we're starting back up on a fresh file after I lost the playthrough progress so characters and stats might be a bit different. I also hadn't hit the next encounter rank modifier so this dungeon is a bit easier which is a nice bonus.

The Trinity Base can be a tricky area to navigate It's composed of three or so floors that are most connected but they look kind of similar so it's easy to get turned around.

I think the encounter rank can be kind of fluid here. We're fighting wonderdogs right now which are I beleive a rank one mystic enemy, but we also run into Snakemen who I believe are rank three. On my prior playthrough this caused some problems a little later but with our lower encounter rank Asellus and White Rose aren't quite as outclassed.

Speaking of Asellus, despite being a human you'll notice that Asellus has the ability to use Mystic Weapons and upon doing so activates this Mystical Change ability. She essentially can grow stronger as both a human and a mystic giving her the potential for some of the best stats in the game. We'll cover this more in her own scenario, but suffice to say this makes her very powerful.

Asellus also comes with the Shade Robe, this is a rare piece of armor that has an infinite use heal effect when used in battle. The armor itself is weak, but it can be nice to give a character a healing skill without taking up a skill slot.

Eventually we find a guard surrounded by monsters. We defeat them and talk to the guard and it's revealed that he is actually Zozma in disguise.
:clint:You guys are so Naive.
You must be Zozma.
:clint:Ah, I see you know me.
Don't you think this is too much? She's going after Yaruto. We don't wanna bother her.
:clint:Are you always this angry? All right. I'll get rid of these monsters. I never thought I would end up helping humans.
He's quite a character.

I just wanted to show off the Trinity Base's visuals a bit. There's a few random rooms like the blue tinged room above but in general as you go farther in the technology gets more advanced.

Eventually though we run into this rear end in a top hat. He's guarding the doorway and turning back and forth. I think you can sneak past him, but I am bad at this type of thing and blunder right into him meaning we'll have to deal with his assholery.

See what I mean! This guy vulcans away 3/4 of our team and it's up to Zozma to finish the fight.

Fortunately though, the fighting ability of our team is not evenly distributed and Zozma is able to solo the mech the rest of the way. The spell you see with the rather ominous damage value is Pain Doubler. It's an Evil magic spell that deals damage equal to the amount the enemy has already taken. This would be really good if it didn't cap out on 666, but it's enough to take out the mech.

It turns out the mech was guarding Yaruto's office but unfortunately we seem to have missed him.

At this point, I remember that White Rose and Zozma have some good spells I haven't equipped them with. White Rose comes with all the basic Light magic spells and some Mystic spells. Zozma also comes with some Mystic Spells and 4 Evil magic spells which are unique to him. Sharp Pain is the money spell him and I make sure to equip it on him as well as replacing White Rose's Light Flood spell with Flash Fire.

We can head further into the building to see the outside of the Trinity Base. We'll be returning to this tower later.

Eventually we find this room with some nice looking treasure, unfortunately as soon as we touch it...

It comes alive and ambushes our party with a Stampede move before we get a chance to act. Fortunately Emelia was able to block it with her shield.

At the start of each turn, a Living Axe and Living Lance will zoom in from offscreen to assist the armor.(who also has more health than normal. He's somewhat of a miniboss.) Every turn a new one will fly into battle to replace them. There are a couple of fights that do something like this and it's pretty irritating.

So here's the reason Sharp Pain is so good, it's an initiative move that has a good chance to stun all of the enemies. It's fantastically useful in random battles and does a good job of locking this fight down.

While Zozma spams Sharp Pain, White Rose spams Flash Fire as our main source of damage. Asellus and Emelia are spamming weaker moves to pick up a few techs. Emelia repicks up Suplex which she hadn't learned in this playthrough and Asellus learns Double Slash.

Eventually he goes down and even has the miniboss death animation! It's nothing special so that's why there's no gif. He drops an EMS Tag which is an accessory with good defense that also prevents petrification. The other chest has a Sancutary Stone.

After a bit more wandering we reach this room which randomly ends the quest. I don't know why it ends it here rather than when we bust into Yaruto's office.

And we get another art screen this time with Emelia again. At this point we have all the characters necessary to build our final party so we're going to do the rest of the ruin quest before we wrap up Emelia's storyline. We'll start that up along with a few other quests next time. I hope you'll join me then.

This is where the blatantly unfinished nature of SaGa Frontier really shines through, sadly: plots will just end with little to no warning, particularly in Emelia's quest and one other. Emelia just wanders down a corridor, swears, and we get a nice picture of her in some weird sci-fantasy camo holding a... is that a Doom plasma rifle? :crossarms: Either way, mission finished, no climax, keep going.

That's probably a HyperBlaster. Silly Emilia, you can't use gun techs with those! :v:
