Red's scenario is pretty good to start out with if you're just starting the game, although it has a few mechanical traps to it. But for an LP? It's definitely the best one to end on.

Okay I think I found what everyone was talking about although I didn't even know about that cameo before today, the Cygnus is always bigger than I remember it being and it has a ton of little side rooms. I'll include it in the next update since it does raise some interesting timeline questions.

Welcome back! Now as people have pointed out in the thread, there's a cameo in one of the rooms of the Cygnus.

Down in the southwest portion of the ship we can find Emelia and Ren!

We could spend more time alone if you'd just quit.
Unfortunately it doesn't look like the two are getting along too well.

Anyway back in Baccarat we begin interrogating some of the thugs. Apparently those weird grunts are a language of some sort and some of the bunny girls at the casino speak it.

One the second floor we find a whole group of them. Also on our way to the BlackX goons, we passed by Emelia in her usual spot. This seems to be a bit of a continuity error because she's already in the bunny costume. It doesn't make much sense for her to be wearing it when Ren's still alive and she's on vacation with him.

Hey, don't take it personal. Hey I'm Dr. Okonogi's kid! Don't ignore me.

Red continues to pester the fighters until getting to the last one who turns out to be Shuzer in disguise. They run away and we chase them down to the parking area.

:zoro:Idiots! We're not on vacation!
BlackX's stress relief tour? I wasn't expecting to see you here.

I am Alkaiser! Get ready to face justice!

I like how Shuzer thinks that Red is just some random crazy person in this cutscene. It makes sense because he's never dealt with Alkaiser so it could just be some loon in a costume. After Shuzer leaves the blue fighters will all start to move toward you.

The fighters are all pretty easy. Alkaiser will usually one shot them. It's worth fighting all of them though they drop over 50 credits per fight.

The biggest concern is that they can combo attack with kick and thrust to do some decent damage.

Fortunately, the transformation to Alkaiser gives Red buckets of health. Compared to regular Red, Alkaiser will have 250 more HP and 25 more of each stat except for Vitality which is 75 points higher. He also gains access to the Ray Sword attack (which is actually a piece of equipment that is what gives all the massive stat boosts) as well as special Alkaiser specific attacks.

Alkaiser attacks are sparked just like Sword or Fighting techs, but can only be learned from using the Ray Sword or other Alkaiser attacks. For now we mostly learn the basic ones that Arkarl also knew.

If you wish you can run right up to the bug monster to initiate the boss fight, but as I mentioned earlier I wanted to get all the money the other guys drop. If you don't care about money it's better to run straight for the boss. Red can't get after battle stat boosts as Alkaiser.

The boss fight is against two blue fighters and an Amorpilla with buffed hp. Unlike the last couple battles it's very possible to die here.

The absolue first thing you need to do is take out the blue fighters. The reason why will become apparent in a couple turns from now.

:cthulhu:This is the 4th dimension magisphere. BlackX fighter's attack power is tripled here!
After the Amorpilla loses about half it's health Alkaiser will be transported here. The monster isn't kidding either, if one of the Blue fighters is left alive a Horn/kick combo will probably one shot you.

But without anybody to combo with the Amorpilla goes down after another two attacks.

You won't get away next time.

And before Red can go chasing after Shuzer, he get's called back to the Cygnus for work.

Unless there's another cameo I'm missing, there's not too much to do in the Cygnus so we pick up our paycheck and talk to Hawk again. This time we get dropped in Shrike which I believe is Red's hometown.

So of course the first thing we do is check out the porno mag.

And then we head over to the Bio Lab. Don't worry, we won't be here too long.

We dodge all the enemies and run to Cotton's chamber to rescue him.

With Alkaiser the fight is no problem. Don't get used to this though, there are some restrictions to turning into Alkaiser that we'll encounter in a bit.

Looks like they were no match for our Valiantium Blade.

Afterwards Cotton joins us. It's not a bad idea to pick up Cotton here. Aside from Riki, Red has the most stuff to do before the world opens up to him so it's nice to have an extra warm body around.

After leaving the lab we go to the street to advance the plot. We go up to the children in the playground and ask them about Sei's Tomb.

:v:Wanna know how to get into Sei's Tomb? (Tell me)

Unfortunately this causes BlackX's guys to jump out of wherever they were hiding.

We're thrust into a fight with three Black X fighters. Normally we'd transform into Alkaiser, but with Cotton here that's not an option. Because Red has to keep his identity a secret, he can only turn into Alkaiser if all the humans, mystics and monsters are dead or incapacitated in some way that removes their vision (status effects like blind, sleep or petrify.) Mechs are left out of this list so if Red is in a party full of mechs he can transform whenever.

Even without Alkaiser Red and Cotton are more than enough for these guys.

After the fight the thugs run off with one of the children to Sei's tomb. Trying to talk to the other kids reveals that some of them are little shits.

Also that the kidnapped girl's name is Amy.

At Sei's tomb the fighters have Amy surrouned.

Also everyone is crying or screaming at each other.

The lead monster tries to calm the girl down with some candy.

And the threat of receiving monster candy is what finally spur's Red into action.

Aside from transforming in the middle of battle, there will be times where Red will transform due to plot. I think the game doesn't intend for you to pick up Cotton because he would very easily have seen Red transform here.

After taking out some of their members last time, the BlackX have made a note of who Alkaiser is.

Now, prepare to meet your maker!!

The battle is between some Green Fighters and a Sphinx. Like before take out the Green Fighters before focusing on the Sphinx.

This time the battle starts in the 3rd Dimension Magisphere. Aside from picking up Cotton, another strategy is to run into Sei's tomb and pick up the Magetama so you can blast everyone with Sacred Song.

We spark a couple more Alkaiser attacks as well. Kaiser Smash is our most damaging move right now.

A bit later Cotton ends the fight with a Supersonic attack.

If you get really lucky Cotton can absorb Sphinx Riddle from the Sphinx. The Sphinx is one of those special monsters that you'll consistently transform into if you have the right skills. In this case that skill is Sphinx Riddle and nothing else so if you get it here Cotton will consistently transform into a lategame quality monster. Unfortunately we absorb Wing so Cotton turns into a Harpy which is still quite good for this stage of the game.

After the fight we get another call back to the Cygnus. That's enough for today. We've still got a couple more of these little quests before the world opens up so we'll keep working on those next time.

Note that you can't transform here even if you don't have Cotton in your party, because you're in a populated area, and surrounded by kids. I don't think this ever comes up again, but it's one of those fights that you're stuck in normal form for. And if you're unlucky with sparks, or the game decides to spawn a bunch of Black X fighters (it's semi random, worst I've had is four greens I think it was), you can get hosed pretty easily. If you picked up Sliding though, you're pretty much guaranteed to stun at least one per turn and they can't really do much to you.

It was mentioned already and it's probably obvious, but it bears repeating: If Alkaiser's on screen in a battle, his theme is playing.

And what the OP mentioned about Alkaiser's restrictions actually comes with some really cool moments where your entire party gets knocked out or blinded or something terrible like that, but you can come from behind by just turning into Alkaiser and laying waste.

This is one of many reasons Red's scenario kicks rear end the most. :black101:

WHO'S YOUR FRIEND?!
So, tokusatsu trivia time!

As previously stated, Red's scenario plays homage to stuff like Super Sentai and Kamen Rider and the like, but one of the biggest nods is actually to Space Sheriff Gavan, first in the Metal Heroes series line of toku shows. (We got a couple entries over here as VR Troopers and Big Bad Beetleborgs, so think closer to that than just Power Rangers) As you might guess from the name of the show, Gavan's obligatory evil organization, Makuu, is basically a space mafia that wants to rule the universe, and one of their biggest tricks is to open up portals to what's known as Makuu Space. Stuff goes weird in Makuu Space and the normal laws of the universe do not apply within, but more importantly, a Makuu monster's power is increased threefold, which they faithfully replicated with the 4th Dimension Magisphere. They even managed to make it look freaky with the giant eye for a floor, and while it doesn't show in the screenshots, the entire screen has this weird wavy effect going where the camera is rotating back and forth slightly and everyone's leaving off little colored afterimages as it does. It's pretty neat.

Probably a graphical effect disabled by dude for better emulator performance. I can imagine that effect really wrecking havoc on one's FPS, especially if they don't have a good graphics card.

And on the subject of graphics, I've been meaning to ask, is there some reason Red's text is black? IIRC, it's supposed to be red to go with his name.

I think they're still there I just didn't get a good image of it. As for the text, I think that's an emulator plugins issue, some of the other plugins I tried didn't make the game look as crisp or garbled the end of the text boxes for some reason. It only seems to effect the main characters text though.

Also, Derek that Tokusatsu stuff is really neat. If there's any more stuff like that as Red's quest progresses feel free to post it.

I wonder if anyone's actually managed to not spark Bright Fist.

It's theoretically possible, but you have to never use the Ray Sword because, IIRC, if you do it checks about a total of 50 times to see if the technique will spark. I want to say that about 24 are in a row.

You'd have to find a way to get through the introductory Alkaiser battles in Baccarat with plain Punch and no sparked moves, especially since I'm pretty sure (not 100%, but like 85%) that Alkaiser can only spark his own special skills, anything else has to be managed as Red.

I love this gimmick. It reminds me of the old Superman TV show, where seemingly every week they'd come up with a new way to incapacitate/blind everyone nearby so Clark Kent could do Superman things. I think my favorite episode was when Clark, Lois, and some of their coworkers got trapped in a cave. They wanted you to think "They're in close quarters--there's no way he can move the rubble blocking the entrance without revealing that he's Supes!" but then the cave "ran out of oxygen" and everyone passed out :allears:

I think that even Punch has a chance to spark Alkaiser's speical punch and kick, just far less on the punch than Ray Sword. But I forget how much less it is than using Ray Sword, just that it's less because it doesn't check quite so many times.

Obtuse.....even hokey.
Welcome back! we have a doozy of an update so let's get started.

Like before, we begin our next "mission" by talking to Hawk. Today we'll be going to Manhattan.

After landing we will be immediately leaving Manhattan. There is literally nothing for Red to do here aside from visiting the accessory shop.

This place will be important later though.

Once we're back on the Cygnus we run into Yuria who has something important to show us.

This is a weapon! This one too. Looks like someone's getting ready for a war. Since when did we get into the weapons business? What's the mark?
:blush:It's BUCCI. You know, they design handbags. I was just gonna take a peek and found all this...
Pretty suspicious. Don't tell anyone about this.

:blush:Be careful Red.

Intriguing! It seems that someone in Manhattan was trying to smuggle weapons by disguising them as designer items, and Red has a good idea who it is.

Red saunters on into the C.T.C building demanding to see the president. I'm sure she has time to spare for some grunt worker on a passenger ship.

I've got to talk to her. About the cargo of the Cygnus!

Unsurprisingly, Red's gambit has failed and the guards have come to escort us out of the building.

I came to see the President.

I just have a couple questions.

Fortunately, someone much more important than Red shows up, as you might expect Fuse is here to investigate the same weapon smuggling as Red. The reception calls the president to see if she can meet with Fuse.

:j:Yes, he's a patrolman...Yes, it's real...All right.

And Fuse pulls Red's rear end out of the fire. Let's see if we can get some answers.

This is Cindy Campbell, president of C.T.C corporation.

I have some questions...
Shut up! I'll do the talking here. Miss Campbell, we have some questions regarding your business partner, Shifa Commerce in Koorong. Exactly what is it they do?

One nice touch is that Campbell shifts her posture a few times during the conversation. She's not giving up anything too easily so it makes sense that Fuse doesn't want Red to say anything and end up showing their hand too early.

Well the problem is, it's a fictitious company. You know, it doesn't exist. No one knows how to contact them.

Unfortunately Red can't help himself.

So Fuse decks him across the room.
Don't make me tell you again.

No need for that. I'll see you around.

Let's go.

Back outside, Red is upset that they weren't able to get anything decisive.

And the scene ends with a dramatic pan up to the top of the C.T.C building.

Back in the Cygnus it seems that trouble may be brewing.

:eek:A pirate ship! This is an emergency! Evacuate all passengers and personnel to the designated areas.
:ohdear:We received a message from the pirate ship. They are demanding we slow the ship down to a minimum speed.

Hmmm. I wonder what the pirates could be after. Perhaps they heard that there were designer goods on board?

Unfortunately the pirates are too smart to fall for the Cygnus's escape maneuvers and attack us pre-emptively.

Back in the engine room, Red and Hawk are preparing to deal with the pirates.
Here they come!

So far the pirates are pretty easy and Red and Cotton have no trouble taking them out. This will change shortly.

Hawk tries to convince Red to fight them off and sacrifice himself, but unfortunately a second pirate sneaks up on Red and knocks him out.

No problem. But what are they after?
:pirate:Shut up!

Fortunately, Fuse is here to save the day.

They are after the cargo.

Campbell! I knew she was behind this!
She's using the pirates to get rid of the evidence!
That's right. Make sure they don't get into the engine room. They're occupying the bridge. We better hurry before they harm the passengers or steal the cargo.
Let's just beat'em up!
...You know the ship better than I do. So you get to choose what we're gonna do.

Hawk gives us some very helpful advice on how to move around the ship. Going into the vent will avoid a good portion of the pirate forces in the ship.

In case you were wondering this is what you'd have to deal with if you left the engine room using the normal exit. These are all monsters with a positive encounter rank modifier too so you don't want to deal with them.

So instead we follow Hawk's advice and end up in the dining room.

The pirates have blocked off the staircase to the upper level of the ship so we'll have to find another way around.

Heading in the left path causes a stream of pirate enemies to rush towards you. Let's try the other path.

After a bit of maneuvering we find this guy guarding the door. He alternates between looking left and right and we don't want him to spot us right now.

This is why. Even normally these guys whould be a bit too much for Red, Cotton, and Fuse to handle but a few of them have boosted health for this fight.

The Yeti is the big issue. He can one shot Red and the attacks from the other monsters add up way to fast.

This is a real dick move the first time you play it. There's basically no way to know that you have to sneak past the monster when he's looking the other way and it's an almost guaranteed party wipe. This battle is actually mandatory, but there are some things you want to do to make it more winnable first.

We decide to start looking in the cabins. Most of them just have monsters, but a couple of them have some familiar faces.

Like this one!

Guess we just have to wait.
Asellus?
Who are you?
I knew it! Red Okonogi. Remember me?
Dr. Okonogi's boy? You got so big. I didn't recognize you. You still have the same eyes.
Boy, it's been what? 10 years? I can't believe it. You used to play with me when I was a baby. Incredible! You haven't changed a bit aprt from the fact you dyed your hair green. Wait a second! You still look like a teenager. How the hell? Hey, you can't be Asellus!
Wait. This is Lady Asellus. She was asleep for 10 years and hasn't aged a day since.
You really expect me to believe that?
We haven't got any time for this nonsense, Red. Hi, my name's Fuse. I am a Patrolman. Ladies, hang on tight till we get rid of the pirates.
Where are you going!?

I can fight...
All right then. Let's all go together. (Guess everyone's got their secrets...)

With that we now have a full party. White Rose is the big pickup here. She comes with a full set of basic light magic spells that are going to be essential to winning that tough fight. Asellus is nothing special at this point but we can steal her Shade Robe.

Over on the right side of the ship we find Yuria. It's good to see that she's ok.

Or not! With a full party these guys aren't too bad at least.

If you didn't pick up Cotton you'll want to head to the ship's upper level. Since we did we're just visiting here for completion's sake.

Because Roufas is here! Like Asellus and White Rose he'll join us to help out.
Why don't you go get the big bad pirates, so I can enjoy a cigar in private.
We're working on it. Will you give us a hand?
My friends are being held hostage too. Allow me to help you. And you are..?
I am Red.
Well let's get going Mr. Red.
I didn't say he could join us!
He'll come in handy. Just wait and see.

Although Red doesn't seem too enthused.

Going around the penultimate level of the ship we run into this pirate getting blasted out of one of the cabin.

Inside we find Blue! We already have a full team even without Cotton, but at this point Blue would probably be more useful than Asellus.

I don't know you.
But you need a ship to wherever you're going, right?
...I suppose. All right.
My name is Fuse. This is Red. What's your name?
I changed my mind.

Or Blue could be a huge jerk and dismiss Red for an entirely petty reason. This one scene is a huge part of Blue's characterization as a jerk.

Guess he doesn't like red.
OUT!

Now that we have a full team we can handle the tough fight against the boosted monsters.

Fuse and White Rose have some pretty advanced stuff. Lifewave is an upper level Mind Magic spell and as I mentioned earlier, White Rose has all of the basic Light spells. You have to equip Flash Fire though. Guess who forgot to do that!

So after a long and slow wipe out I make sure to actually equip it this time. Ironically it will turn out to be unnecessary for this fight.

Round two!

And I immediately gently caress up and select Flashflood instead.

But it triggers on two of the enemies including the most dangerous one do it all works out.

After that it's just a matter of cleaning up the rest of them.

White Rose even absorbs the last Platoonapus for style points.

This door would take us to the command room, but Fuse figures that it's heavily guarded so we have to find another way.

Isn't there any other way?
There is an emergency passage below. But it's too dangerous to through it in flight.
That's the risk we've got to take.
Maybe. Hawk told me that you could stay out there only for a short while.
Wait a second. I don't want to be sucked out of the plane. Maybe we should...
I don't know the exact technical details. But there's supposed to be some type of energy field surrounding the Cygnus. That field could protect us while we're out there.
All right. Let's see how fast we can run across.

As Red mentioned to get to the command room we have to run across this emergency passage. It's a bit of a dick move since if you take to long you'll get blown off and get an instant game over. While Red's quest is pretty cool overall there are quite a few areas that can be dick moves. That being said, if you know what to do this isn't too bad. Just hold down left and the run button and you'll make it across.

Back in the cockpit we see that Nomad is the one responsible for taking the ship hostage.

Red and Fuse run up behind the guards and prepare for battle.
Freeze! This is the Patrol!
:;-*:Hey, how did you...? Get'em!!

This guy is the boss of the area. Same as in Riki's tale but without the Razorback and with an arguably better team (Red's team has better characters, but Riki's team is more experienced.)

The four monster fight was much tougher. White Rose can easily undo any damage and since there's only one target, combos will wreck him.

Like so.

After a few rounds, Platyhooks runs away and leaves a bunch of Platoonapus's for us to deal with.

They have slightly boosted health, but White Rose's Flash Fire still does a number on them.

Unfortunately, during the fight, Nomad was able to escape.

Red and Fuse run to one of the side rooms to watch the ship fly away.

We've got no choice but to find the pirates and make them confess.
Fuse! What's that?

Nomad isn't getting away unscathed though. This giant ship chases after the pirates and opens fire at them.

I think this is how Nomad and the pirates end up in Tanzer. It must have eaten some of the debris from their ship.

The game doesn't try to hide who was responsible either. Campbell was clearly the one who would benefit most from the destruction of the evidence of her weapon smuggling.

But we're gonna have to wait to serve Campbell her slice of justice pie. Red still has a couple more things to do on the Cygnus.

OUT!

This scene got a huge laugh out of me when I played through this sequence. :allears:

Although in retrospect, Red's initial argument kind of falls flat if you remember that Blue's supposed to have the Region Map to let him circumvent the need for a ship between Regions. Which in turn raises the question of why he's even bothering taking a commercial flight instead.

Couple interesting things about this section:

That dick move of fighting those four monsters? Yeah, you can pick them off one-by-one in each separate room, and in the end, you'll just have to fight the guy guarding the door. Makes the fight go from a hell of a pain to really pathetic in a hurry.

As for the boss, despite Fuse's bitching, you can still go through the front door no trouble, and all you have to worry about are a few extra enemies. As for Platyhooks, that battle is weird. It can go like four different ways, and I never figured out what triggers what. Sometimes he'll run away and summon minions, sometimes he'll just summon minions while he's there, sometimes he'll buff himself, and sometimes he'll come back to take you on after you take out some of his minions. I don't know what triggers what, maybe encounter level, or how much damage you do to him before X amount of time passes, no idea.

Also, you missed a party member. On purpose?

a good idea at the time.

He has to visit a place to unlock it on the Map, iirc. (Unless you cheat.)

Sleep in the briefing room.
At your own peril.
Another interesting fact: the main reason that Blue doesn't like Red's name? Because the name of his hated brother, Rouge, is French for "red".

But yeah, you missed a bunch of interesting stuff and the ability to beat that tough group of monsters one-by-one. They're several times easier when they can't gang up on you. There's also a scenario where you can sneak up on a group of enemies from both sides and make them much easier than if you had just rushed them.

Actually, you ARE supposed to go through the other door to get to the bridge. You see, if you go in the front, you still have to do the Platyhooks fight... and then you get gunned down because you rushed the spot where the enemies were watching like a dumbass, resulting in a game over.

WHO'S YOUR FRIEND?!
Yeah, this segment is pretty much a complete wall for a first time player who's just been cruising through Red's scenario so far. The thing that Shrike should've hinted at is that while sure, Red's got Alkaiser and it's badass and everything, it isn't something you can really fully rely on for every given situation, so you have to get creative at times to work around the limitations the game puts on you. The Cygnus scenario is also unique in that it can be done basically as easy or as difficult as you want it to be, and while you're perfectly able to just charge in guns blazing, it isn't the smartest way to get through the scenario.

Also on the list of stuff you missed, IIRC, Yuria (the real one) is holed up in one of the cabins over by where you get your paycheck. It's just a nice little thing for Red to check in on her.

I didn't know about the gunning down part, I just tried it out once to see what happened, saw the fight, and just restarted and did it normally.

There's a good reason for Blue to board a commercial flight. He's trying to get that Rune Magic gift, clearly.

Red is, like most* good shounen heroes, a little on the dim side.

I've never poked around that fight, because I'm pretty sure that the pure SaGa-ness of the programming would make my mind burst into a thousand SaGa candies, but from anecdotal evidence I'd say that most of variations tend to focus on damage and time.

To get Platyhooks to come back, you need to take a lot of damage/be in a bad state and also take some time in killing the minions. Although I think I've had it happen a few times just by bad luck with getting blocked a lot. I think I've even had him run away again after coming back.

This. If you do a lot of damage quickly, he'll run. If you take awhile killing his minions, he'll come back.
Those are really the only guarantee's you can count on due to the SaGa randomness. I remember a battle where he ran away, came back, buffed himself twice and then ran away again. :psyduck:

Flashfire is also really good at killing the minions since they have a ridiculous block rate.
